Students first
Putting you, our students, first.
WelTec and Whitiriea have formed a strategic partnership to develop
a network of tertiary learning in the greater Wellington region.
This partnership, aimed at putting ‘students first’,
will provide new and existing students with access
to a diverse range of relevant programmes of study
plus other opportunities including: each campus
becoming a one-stop-shop by providing a range
of information on each institution, access to high
quality teaching across the Wellington region and
greater student diversity.
The goal is that students will be able to transition
seamlessly between Whitireia and WelTec and study
for a qualification that is in demand by employers.

Certificates provide a broad
introduction to a range of skills
and knowledge in a particular
subject area.
Certificates at levels 2 to 4 are
often needed for entry into trades
and service employment.
Certificates can also provide direct
entry into diplomas and degrees.
Diplomas are often required
for entry to advanced trade,
technical and professional
occupations.
Diplomas may provide
direct entry into a degree
qualification and, in many
cases, courses from the
diploma may be credited
toward degree qualifications.
Degree qualifications are
generally required for entry
or advancement in
professions.
They also provide further
opportunities for study at
masters or doctoral level.
A degree usually requires
a minimum of three years’
full-time study (or the parttime equivalent).
Graduate

Specialised
programmes at level
7 for people who
already have degrees
or substantial work
experience in their field.
In many cases, study at a lower level in a subject will
count towards gaining a higher-level qualification.

Credit for what you
already know
WelTec certificates, diplomas, degrees
and graduate diplomas are NZQAaccredited and, with City and Guilds
and other international qualifications
on offer, your qualification will be well
recognised – both here and overseas.

who recognise WelTec qualifications as
entry criteria or as partial completion
towards their qualifications.

We may also be able to give you credit
at WelTec for study you have done at
another tertiary institution.

Youth Guarantee Scheme
If you’re 16-17 years old, and ready to move beyond
school, this is a great opportunity to study and
gain practical skills. Youth Guarantee is an exciting
initiative which offers you the chance to study feefree for one year in a range of WelTec programmes.
Focus your studies on your area of interest, and on
successful completion you’ll be equipped to go onto
further study or enter the workforce.
Is Youth Guarantee for me?
This programme is designed for students who:

are 16-17 years old at the time of commencing studies, or who are 15 years old and have an early exemption at the time of commencing studies

want to enrol for full-time study for a year

feel that the secondary school environment is not for them
are new to tertiary study


are New Zealand citizens or residents.
How does the
programme work?
WelTec is accepting applications for Youth
Guarantee places in 2013 now.
As a Youth Guarantee student, you will
be a full-time student attending our
mainstream WelTec courses and will have
access to all the WelTec services and
support that our students enjoy. The only
difference is that your fees are paid by a
government-financed Youth Guarantee
grant.
You can request an application pack by
visiting any WelTec campus, by phoning
a Student Advisor on 0800 935 832 or by
emailing [email protected]
To qualify for the Youth Guarantee scheme,
you need to study selected level 2 or 3
courses for a full year. This can be either
one full-year, or two half-year programmes.
Students enrolled in the academy study
full-time and gain credits for both NCEA
level 2 and a chosen area of the trades.
You also have the opportunity to retain your
links with your secondary school and the
year’s timetable is based on secondary
school terms and hours. The academy is
a supportive tertiary learning environment
which is specifically designed to provide a
bridge from secondary studies.
Because the programmes are free, you
are not eligible for Student Loans including
loans for course-related costs. This may
mean there are certain expenses that you
will need to meet. You may be eligible for
student allowances and you should visit
www.studylink.govt.nz for more
information.
Wellington Trades
Academy
Read more about the academy on page 66.
STAR
(Secondary Tertiary
Alignment Resource)
If you’re still at school, you can attend
WelTec part-time as part of the STAR
programme. You’ll gain an introduction to
a subject area of interest to you and see
whether this is something that you might like
to do as a full-time WelTec student.
Scholarships
WelTec offers a variety of scholarships which
are specifically designed to provide support
and assistance to younger learners.

website regularly so check there to find

Fronde’s vision for
graduate possibilities
“We employ a lot of WelTec graduates who come
through our intern programme and we notice they tend
to have a real vocational interest in IT, as opposed to
other graduates who may come out of general study and
then decide to work in IT,” says Ian Clarke, Fronde Chief
Executive. In Ian’s view, the advantage of the vocational
approach is that WelTec graduates are work-ready to the
point they can engage directly with clients.
Fronde is one of the local companies represented on
WelTec’s Information Technology Advisory Committee
and provides the committee with advice on changes
in the workplace and industry trends that need to be
reflected in its qualifications.
“Industry engagement is critical for institutions like
WelTec and we’re very pleased to be part of the small
employer group that gives advice and support on IT
trends,” says Ian.
“A key to attracting excellent graduates is being able
to create and demonstrate a vision of what they can
become, and our partnership with WelTec means Fronde
is in a position to do exactly that and show what career
possibilities are out there,” says Ian.

INTERIOR DESIGN
In studying interior design, you will gain many of
the skills you need to participate with architects
and others to create original responses to interior
spaces. A wide range of projects are undertaken
that explore the design of furniture, buildings and
the interior environment.
Cultural Design
In studying Cultural Design, you will be
introduced to design as expressed by
both traditional (tuturu) and contemporary
practitioners. Through the study of the past,
and practise in the present, you will acquire
an introduction to the role of designer for iwi,
hapu and the community at large that wishes to
learn and live within the spiritual values (wairua)
provided by toi Maori.
Projects in Cultural Design range across all the
dimensions and utilise everything from pencils to
film. Where possible, teamwork is undertaken to
achieve commissioned projects for real clients.
Students will develop an awareness of cultural
and social responsibility, and are encouraged
to integrate their own cultural art and designs to
support a full and complete understanding of
indigenous and international perspectives.
CREATE YOUR OWN BCT
One size does not always fit all. With Create
Your Own BCT, you have the option to choose
your own combination of electives in addition
to the compulsory core papers (timetable and
pre-requisite dependent). Learn interior design,
visual arts and web, or try a combination of
photography and cultural design – the choice is
yours.
