SEVENTY YEARS … on the air!
The radio ministry at East Side Lutheran Church was started by the Rev.
Harry Gregerson on the first Sunday in October 1944. For many years
he wished to see a Lutheran church broadcast its regular Sunday
morning service. This was his chance to try.
With the approval of the Church Council, he arranged for KSOO Radio to broadcast several Sunday
services on a trial basis. The reaction of the community was so gratifying and overwhelming, that the
broadcast was continued. East Side Lutheran has been on the air every Sunday since that time. The
program has always been broadcast from 11:00 am to Noon and is the longest running, continuous
program on Sioux Falls radio.
George Hanson was instrumental in setting up the mechanics of broadcasting from the church and acted
as engineer and announcer for the program in its infancy. George sat in the office at the old church (Cliff
Avenue and Austin) and turned on the various microphones— altar, pulpit, choir and announcer — as
needed.
The vision of Pastor Gregerson, the devotion of the early pioneers in this venture, and the continued
support of the congregation have been a service to the Sioux Falls area. The broadcast brings the Word of
God to shut-ins and to unchurched souls.
Our broadcast is heard in South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska and can be streamlined on KSOO’s website (as well as our
own website). We have not been able to determine the original cost for a Sunday broadcast back in 1944; now it is $235/Sunday. It is
a very important ministry of our congregation to the surrounding area!

To the visitors from East Side Lutheran,
On behalf of the St. Dysmas Congregation and Council in Sioux Falls, I would like to thank you for joining
the men in worship on August 14, 2014. I know it means a lot to the men to see some new smiling faces
each week. Many of the guys receive no visits and truly enjoy fellowshipping each week with their
visiting brothers and sisters in Christ. Thank you again for taking the time to visit and worship with us.
Please know that you are always welcome to join us again and we look forward to seeing you again.
Your Brother in Christ,
Tony Borstad
Secretary, St. Dysmas Inside Council
Each week we publish as list of people for whom prayer is requested. You can
pick one up in the narthex or the church office.
The list is also sent to many people via e-mail. If you would like to receive the
list electronically please send your request to [email protected].

Education News
In our Preschool room, we have 2 new teachers that will be sharing

I am so excited for this school year in our Education Ministry!! God is

to see some super heroes in our finest. Each of our teachers are
super heroes and I am thankful for each and every one of them.
Thanks to each of them for teaching the children of East Side this
school year.
THANK YOU!!!
Thanks to all those who donated supplies to

WELCA News from President Janet Wilcox – September 2014
Our September Fellowship on September 8th was a great time had by all. Our surprise Norwegian guest
speaker was Pastor Olaf Roynesdal. I told a story about Sven and Olaf and Olaf told a story about a nosey
but-in-ski named Janet. He told us about his home in Brooklyn, his Norwegian parents and his journey
from Brooklyn to Sioux Falls. Did you know there is a farm in Norway named Røynesdal? If you missed
our WELCA Fellowship, you missed a very interesting and fun time. We’ll try to have more very
interesting Fellowships so try to come the 2nd Monday of each month (unless we have a special event
happening that month – like the Soup & Pie Supper). Naomi Circle served us a delicious dessert to top it
all off.
We had election of WELCA officers for 2015 at the Sept 8th Fellowship. All those nominated (and
accepted nomination) will be installed in January 2015.
We want to give many thanks to Helen Paetow for recording 27 songs on the piano so we will always
have piano music for our Fellowships and Events. Ken Eckert gets thanks also for recording Helen
playing. And Katie edited the CD so we can choose by number which song we want to use and how many
verses will be sung. What a wonderful service from those three. We’re most grateful. We used the piano
music for “Faith of our Fathers” at Fellowship and it worked just great.
ATTENTION GARDNERS
Thank you for sharing your fresh tomatoes with us for the chili we’ll serve at Soup and Pie Supper.
HOWEVER, we’ve received an over-abundance of tomatoes and won’t be needing any more. Thank you
very much.
Our annual Soup and Pie Supper, Bake Sale and Craft Sale will be October 9th this year from 4:00 – 7:00
PM. We’ll be asking for lots of help and donations. Sign-up sheets for pies, bake sale items, specialty
bread and helpers will be available in the Narthex September 28th. Please prayerfully consider how you
can help with this important fund raiser. Pass the word to all your friends, neighbors and family so we can
have a great turn-out this year. Contact Nancy Renner if you’re interested in having a craft
table.
Food to You is in desperate need of toilet paper to give to those coming for food. Please consider bringing
toilet paper and leaving it in the church office.
You know ladies, WELCA is Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and that means all
church member ladies are part of WELCA. We are all here to serve and we ask you to join a Circle and/or
come to WELCA Fellowship and hear what we’re doing to serve. As you can tell, we are very busy at
East Side. Circles meet and have Bible study 5 times during the month. You should be able to find a time
that works for you. Just show up, you don’t need an invitation. You’ll find everyone most welcoming.
Circles meet: the 3rd Monday of each month at 7 PM at church; the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 9 AM at
church; 2nd Saturday of the month at 10 AM at the church and 2 circles meet 3rd Wednesday at 1:15 PM at
church. Circles do not meet during the months of June, July and August.
May God bless us in our service,
Janet

East Side Lutheran Congregation Council
August 25, 2014
Present: Pam Alexander, Jeff Armstrong, Lorri Halverson, Joey Larsen, Carla
Middlen, Wayne Wosje, and Pastor Olaf Roynesdal.
Absent: Jason Bormann and Tom Hendricks.
An opening prayer was given by Pastor Roynesdal.
Secretary’s Report:
Motion was made by Jeff Armstrong, seconded by Pam Alexander to approve minutes from the July 21, 2014
meeting. Motion carried.
Treasurer’s Report:
Treasurer Wosje reported things seem to be a little better financially than in the past few months. We have
received $10,300 from several perpetual foundation gifts and this money is designated for the general fund.
Several general line items were discussed. Motion was made by Lorri Halverson, seconded by Jeff Armstrong
to accept the report as given. Motion carried.
Updates:




A meeting was held recently with our attorney. We have two options regarding the lawsuit: go forward to
trial (possibly not get a court date until 2016) or go to mediation (possibly a six month to one year
timeframe). We can stop mediation at any time and attorney fees are included in either option. It is
anticipated that if we go to trial and win there would be an appeal by the other side. After discussion, a
motion to go forward with mediation was made by Jeff Armstrong, seconded by Pam Alexander. Motion
carried.
Our roof sustained hail damage in the recent June storm and several bids have been received. We are
waiting for the insurance company for more information.
Rally Sunday plans are proceeding. There is a need for volunteers that day. A postcard inviting the
neighborhood will be delivered.
The Celebrating Families event was very well attended and plans are being made for next year.
Business:



The Call Committee will meet after the Council meeting.
Planning for the fall stewardship campaign will begin.
The boiler room had water after the weekend rain but with the additional sump pumps it did not
accumulate.
The next meeting will be September 14, 2014 at noon.
Respectfully submitted,

News and Updates

Train Up a Child … The total received since January 2014: $ 807 (Jar—$ 463; Sunday School
offerings—$ 344) In nine months we have been able to provide a year’s tuition at church elementary
schools for 54 children!

Our thanks to Bruce Rollag for delivering all our mailings each month to the Business Post Office!

Our parking lots will be serviced in the near future. This will involve sealing all the cracks.

Our financial picture is not as bleak as it appears on the next page. This time last year we have a
negative balance of $20,000; this year we have a small, but positive balance of $200. Expenses are
down from a year ago. Recognize as well that September 28th is not yet reported; generally our income
is the greatest on the last Sunday of the month.

A continuing concern is our Building Fund! We are again “in the hole.” Please keep current (as you
are able) on your contributions which make our monthly mortgage payment of $ 13,950.

The call committee has completed the “ministry site profile” which describes East Side and our hopes
and needs for the future. That profile will be posted on the ELCA website for all interested pastoral
candidates to examine.

Our second neighborhood Rally Day event was a wonderful success. Our thanks to Joey Larsen and
all his capable assistants who organized and staffer the event.

Wayne Wosje has resumed cooking our Wednesday suppers. This is a wonderful opportunity not only
to get a good meal but also to enjoy good table fellowship and conversation! There is no cost for the
meal. A basket is available for a free-will donation but you may simply come and eat!

In the neighborhood for God!
An oldie but goodie returns …
Lena, the church gossip, and self-appointed monitor of the church’s morals, kept sticking her nose into
other people’s business. Several members did not approve of her extra-curricular activities, but feared her
enough to maintain their silence. She made a mistake, however, when she accused Frank, a new member,
of being an alcoholic after she saw his old pickup parked in front of the town’s only bar one afternoon.
She emphatically told Frank (and several others) that every one seeing it there would know what he was
doing! Frank, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just turned and walked away. He didn’t
explain, defend, or deny. He said nothing.
Later that evening, Frank quietly parked his pickup in front of Lena’s house …. walked home …. and left it
there all night. (You gotta love Frank!)
