PASSPORTS & VISAS
A valid passport is required for international travel. It is the responsibility
of the traveller to secure the required visas before leaving home. Most
countries insist that your passport be valid for at least six months after your
date of return, so please make sure your passport is valid for this six-month
period. You must carry a machine-readable passport, and have a valid return
ticket. Always carry your passport and other travel documents in your hand
luggage. Keep photocopies in a separate bag and leave a copy at home with
family or friends in case of an emergency.
Australian, New Zealand and UK Citizens require visas to travel to Vietnam,
Cambodia, Laos, Burma and China. Vietnam visas are to be obtained prior to
departure. These visas are valid for three months from the date of issue. Please
check your itinerary for information regarding whether a single or double entry
visa is required. Cambodian visas can be obtained on arrival either at the
airport or on board the RV La Marguerite. You will be required to provide two
passport size photos as well as approximately US$35. Laos visas can be
obtained on arrival at Luang Prabang airport, costing approximately US$30.
Two passport photos are required. Burma visas must be obtained prior to
departure from Australia, New Zealand and the UK with an invitation letter

Glide over the crystal-clear waters of Ha Long Bay
from Travelmarvel. A single-entry China visa is required and is usually valid
for three months after the issue date. This visa permits a stay in China for a
maximum of 30 days.
*Visa requirements were correct at the time of printing but are subject
to change. Please contact Travelmarvel or your travel agent to obtain
up-to-date information.
TRAVEL INSURANCE
If you have not yet taken out travel insurance, please see your travel agent
before your tour. Foreign hospitalisation and treatment often require payment
in cash, prior to the provision of services, and medical evacuation can be
expensive. Travel protection and luggage insurance are highly recommended.
We suggest that you purchase a travel protection plan to cover trip
cancellation for medical reasons, trip delay, medical expenses, accidental
death, lost luggage, medical evacuation and airline cancellation charges
under a variety of circumstances.
VACCINATIONS
Vaccinations may be required for travel to Asia. Please seek medical advice
prior to your travels.
VALUABLES & SECURITY
Do not take anything with you that will create emotional or financial hardship
if lost or stolen. Carry all documents, money, passport, tickets etc. with you.
Do not carry these important items in your suitcase. You may find a money
belt (worn inside clothing) useful while travelling. Never leave hand-luggage
unattended in hotel lobbies or dining rooms. Avoid exploration of unfamiliar
streets or areas on your own. When sightseeing, keep valuables locked in the
safe in your room or stateroom.
EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION
With your final documentation, we will provide you with some important
phone numbers and other information. Our local representatives are also
available to assist with any needs that may arise while you are on tour.

GRATUITIES
On all Travelmarvel sailings, gratuities to your Cruise Manager and ship crew
are included in the tour price. This also applies to land touring where a local
guide and/or driver is employed.
GENERAL PHYSICAL FITNESS
Our tours and cruises are not physically demanding. However, because of
the nature of many of the sites that you will be visiting, some tours may not
be appropriate for guests with certain medical conditions and physical
restrictions. Walking tours are often on uneven ground or cobblestones and
may include stairs as well as steep inclines. You should be able to stand on
your feet for an extended period of time to visit museums and other sites.
In the lead-up to your tour we recommend that you try to walk for an hour
at a time at least three times a week. This will ensure you have the stamina
and energy to see and appreciate the sights we will take you to on your tour.
You should also ensure your walking shoes fit well and have been broken in
prior to departure.
PRESCRIPTIONS & MEDICAL HISTORY
A copy of any prescriptions is vital in case of health problems. Prepare a list
of your medications, including the name, dosage, your prescribing doctor and
their phone number. If you have health problems, ask your doctor to prepare
your medical history for a foreign doctor. It should include your name,
address, emergency contact, blood type, medical history, current medications
and dosages, drug allergies, reasons for prior hospitalisations and a list of
immunisations and dates. Pack sufficient medication for the duration of the
cruise/tour. Your medication should be kept close at hand in your purse or
carry-on bag, rather than in your checked luggage. It is always a good idea to
carry a list of your medications in case they are lost and remember to leave
everything in its original container. It is also a good idea to bring a copy of
any prescriptions for eyeglasses or contacts.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
LUGGAGE
Each passenger is entitled to take one piece of luggage that does not exceed
20 kg (44 lbs). The tour price includes porterage for one piece of luggage.
Additional luggage may incur an additional cost (payable direct to the hotel).
You will receive a Travelmarvel bag with your travel documentation. In
additional to your main luggage, you may wish to use this as your small
carry-on bag. If your tour includes Sapa or Ha Long Bay in Vietnam, you will
be required to pack an overnight bag for these portions of the holiday – the
Travelmarvel bag will come in handy for this.
CLOTHING
Dress on tour is casual. Light, comfortable clothing is recommended, as well
as warmer clothes if you’re travelling to northern Vietnam or China between
October and April. Good walking shoes are also beneficial as some
excursions involve walking over uneven ground. Shorts are acceptable on
women, although many people in South East Asia are still modest and very
revealing clothing is frowned upon. Some temples and tourist sites do not
permit shorts above the knee or uncovered shoulders. Smart/casual clothing
is acceptable when you dine at restaurants, or while on board.
OTHER NECESSITIES TO PACK
Be sure to pack your passport, wallet (cash, credit cards), money belt, airline
tickets/e-ticket confirmation details, a day bag (to hold extra layers, rain
jacket, water, snacks, sunglasses and camera), medication and copies of
prescriptions, sunscreen, lip balm, toiletries and insect repellent.
Recommended optional items you may wish to bring include: a small
umbrella, an additional memory card for your camera, chargers for your
phone and camera, electrical adaptors, a calculator for currency conversion,
a travel alarm clock, a list of addresses and important phone numbers,
a photocopy of the front page of your passport (keep separate from passport)
and some reading material.

Encounter remarkable cultures in Luang Prabang
LEARN ABOUT YOUR DESTINATION
It may be useful to do a little research on the locations that you will be visiting.
Familiarise yourself with the area, cities, the language spoken and transport
information. Refer to your itinerary when researching and try to prepare
yourself for anything that may eventuate. The more that you know about your
destination, the more you’ll appreciate all that you see when you arrive.
During your travels, you will encounter new customs and different lifestyles.
Appreciate and enjoy the differences. This process of discovery and
understanding is one of the many benefits of travelling. Despite language
barriers, a smile is universal. Friendliness and tolerance towards others,
including your fellow travellers, Cruise Manager and crew, is essential
for everyone’s enjoyment of the tour.
AT THE AIRPORT
RECONFIRMATION OF FLIGHTS
We recommend that you contact your airline(s) or travel agent at least
72 hours before your initial flight to confirm your departure details.
CHECK-IN
It is important that you arrive at the airport at least two hours before
domestic flights and three hours in advance for international flights. This will
allow you time to check your baggage in, present your passport and ticket,
get seat assignments and boarding passes, and make your way through
security procedures to the boarding area. Please ensure you arrive at the
airport at the correct time. Early morning flights may require you to check-in
the day before. Airlines have little leniency if flights are missed.
RESTRICTIONS – CHECKED LUGGAGE
International carriers may impose fees or require you to remove articles
if weight or size limits are exceeded. We recommend that you contact your
airline(s) or travel agent for specific information prior to departure, especially
as size and weight limits can vary between airlines.
10

Traverse the stunning hilltop landscapes of Sapa
RESTRICTIONS – HAND LUGGAGE
For your comfort, limit hand luggage to one bag that fits under your aircraft
seat or in the overhead compartment. You will receive a Travelmarvel travel
bag with your documentation. While on board the plane, make sure you have
your passport, airline tickets, medication and all your travel documents with
you in your hand luggage.
LUGGAGE TAGS
We supply Travelmarvel luggage tags for you to fill out and attach to your
suitcase or hand luggage. It is also a good idea to put a label with your
name, address and telephone number on the inside of your suitcase and hand
luggage. For security reasons, keep all unchecked luggage in your immediate
possession. Unattended luggage can be confiscated by airport personnel.
COMFORT & AVOIDING JET LAG
• Wear loose clothes and comfortable shoes during your flights.
• Eat light and try to hydrate yourself constantly with water (avoid caffeine,
alcohol and carbonated drinks).
• Alleviate the pressure on your ears by chewing gum, yawning, swallowing,
or gently blowing your nose.
• If possible, try to walk up and down the aisle to stretch out your limbs
and get blood circulating. You could also do a few isometric exercises.
• If you arrive in the morning, try to sleep during your flight so you can stay
awake through to the evening once you have arrived at your destination.
•A
void wearing contact lenses during your flight because aircraft cabin air
tends to dry them out.
AIRPORT & AIRLINE SECURITY
The following is based on information issued by the Australian
Government regarding liquid, aerosol and gel restrictions on flights
(see www.travelsecure.infrastructure.gov.au for further information). These
rules concern flights coming into and departing Australia only. We advise
you to check with your airline for clarification of regulations before you leave.

Enjoy the opportunity to observe endangered Giant Pandas in China
Each container of liquids, aerosols or gels in your carry-on luggage must be
100 ml or less. All must be sealed in a transparent, 1 litre (or less) resealable
plastic bag. You may still carry through the screening point prescription
medicines, baby products and non-prescription medicines that you need
for the flight. Proof of need may be required. You will have to surrender
any liquids, aerosols or gels greater than 100 ml that you are carrying at the
screening point. This includes duty free items (at many airports, you are able
to purchase duty free items after you have passed through the screening
point for your international flight).
Items allowed include empty containers such as mugs or flasks, cosmetics
and toiletries such as tampons, talcum powder, contact lenses and lens
solution, solid foods, baby products like empty beakers or flasks, baby milk
or juice, medicines including prescribed medication (e.g. insulin) and
essential non-prescribed medication.
Items over 100 ml not allowed include drinks in cans, bottles, liquid
cosmetics and toiletries that are in liquid or gel form, such as perfumes,
creams and products in pressurised containers such as hairspray, shaving
foam or gel and aerosol deodorants and liquid-based food products.
CUSTOMS
To prevent the introduction of exotic pests and diseases on your return home,
arriving travellers are screened and luggage is often inspected or x-rayed by
customs or quarantine officers. All food and other such items of plant and/or
animal origin need to be declared.
Travellers should also declare items on which duty or tax might be payable
(check with customs about the duty free concession). For more details, please
visit the customs website listed on page 6.
LATE OR MISSED FLIGHTS
In the unfortunate event that you miss a flight completely or that you are
delayed substantially, please advise the airline representative that you are a
cruise passenger bound for a specific start location, date and time. Be sure to
advise Travelmarvel of your new travel arrangements immediately.

ON TOUR – GENERAL INFORMATION
PASSENGERS NEEDING SPECIAL ASSISTANCE
Travelmarvel welcomes passengers with disabilities or special needs,
provided they are accompanied by two companions capable of providing
all assistance required. Any disability or medical condition requiring
special attention must be reported to Travelmarvel at the time of booking.
Travelmarvel will make reasonable efforts to accommodate the special
needs of disabled cruise and/or tour participants, but is not responsible
for any denial of services by carriers, hotels, restaurants, or other
independent suppliers, nor any additional expenses incurred.
Wheelchairs and walkers cannot be carried on coaches, due to space
limitations. Wheelchair passengers should be aware of these limitations.
For safety reasons, passengers in wheelchairs cannot be carried on ramps
in ports where the ship is at anchor. We regret that we cannot provide
individual assistance to a passenger for walking, dining, getting on and
off coaches or other transportation vehicles or other personal needs.
Shore excursions may include walks of up to 3 kilometres over steps and
uneven ground; these are inaccessible to wheelchair users. For your safety
and enjoyment, we recommend that all passengers be in good physical
condition to fully participate, enjoy and benefit from all tours and shore
excursions, as well as the cruise experience.
MINORS
Minors under the age of 18 travelling to foreign countries must be
accompanied by an adult and have a notarised letter of consent signed by the
parent(s) not travelling with them. Parents, guardians and chaperones are
responsible for overseeing the conduct of minors in their care. As such, minors
may not be left unsupervised on board any ship. A parent or legal guardian
MUST accompany children under the age of 18 on all tours for safety and
liability reasons. Please contact our Reservations Team for more information.
14
– Asia – Know Before You Go –
Staff on board the RV La Marguerite are always ready to lend a hand
LANGUAGE
The official language used by Travelmarvel staff worldwide and on board
the ships is English. All staff, crew and local guides speak fluent English
throughout South East Asia.
HYGIENE
Colds and other viruses can spread quickly in an enclosed area such as your
coach or cruise ship. Please practise hygiene and respiratory courtesy – wash
your hands often, cover your coughs and sneezes and perhaps pack antibacterial
wipes and hand sanitiser.
ALLERGIES
If you have a food allergy or other condition, which needs to be managed on
tour, please advise your booking agent as soon as possible, and your Tour
Director upon arrival, as most suppliers require advance notice to cater for
your condition. In some cases you might be asked to fill out a form or waiver.
LOCAL TRANSPORT SAFETY
Passengers must remain seated at all times while the coach or local boat
is in motion to avoid serious injury. Hand luggage and other personal items
should be safely stored in the overhead luggage racks or under your seat
to keep aisles clear. Heavy items, such as bottles, should not be stored
overhead. No passenger should remain in the motor coach or the local boat
during stops. Do not leave any valuable items on the coach or local boat.
Please watch the stairs and overhead entrances when descending from the
motor coach, and check for traffic when exiting. Please follow these safety
precautions and take the time to note all emergency exits.
TRAVELLER FEEDBACK
We are sincerely interested in detailed comments about your experience
and holiday. We strive to further improve our tours in response to such
comments. On board, you will receive a Travelmarvel Traveller Feedback
form. Please take a few minutes to complete this and return it to your Tour
Director. Your comments are then sent directly to Travelmarvel in Australia.
By advising us of your travel preferences and interests, you can help us to
develop our tours and customer programs to meet your needs.

CLIMATE & TEMPERATURES:
Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Burma tend to share similar weather patterns,
enjoying a ’cool’ season from around December to February, and a ’hot’
season from March to May. Monsoons occur from May or June to October,
bringing sudden torrential downpours for an hour or two every day, followed
just as suddenly by bright sunshine. It rarely rains in the morning, even during
the wet season. Vietnam’s south is tropical, but the north can experience
rather cold winters – in Hanoi, an overcoat might be necessary in January.
China has a variety of temperature and rainfall zones, including continental
monsoon areas. In winter most areas become cold and dry, in summer hot
and rainy.

During your journey, you’ll find that Vietnamese people are dynamic in
commerce and extremely dedicated to their family. Throughout the region,
people are receptive to foreigners and will welcome you warmly. They love
to share a joke and their story with you. There is little evidence of animosity
as a result of the Vietnam war. A healthy curiosity does however exist in
regards to Westerners and you may find yourself frequently engaged in
conversation with the locals wanting to practice their English.
Destinations
• Hanoi: Vietnam’s beautiful and enchanting capital, Hanoi, is a charming
city rich in Vietnamese legend and tradition. The tangled streets of Hanoi’s
Old Quarter provide an alluring and idyllic atmosphere, where pretty
tree-lined boulevards and the fading facades of grand villas allude to a
French colonial past. The well-preserved traditional temples, meanwhile,
lend a gracious flavour to this beautiful city.

of Hanoi. Nestled within the picturesque mountains of northern Vietnam,
it is a lush rural area brimming with emerald green rice fields and terraces

1500 meters above sea level, winter is quite cold and often snowfall occurs.

of nature’s most inspiring displays. Covering an area of approximately
1,550 square kilometres and comprising around 2,000 individual islets, this

most beautiful regions. Thousands of limestone karsts and tiny islets, most
of which are uninhabited and untouched by humans, can be seen rising
from the stunning waters, creating a landscape of astounding beauty.

oi An: Situated on the south central coast of Vietnam, this former trading
centre became a popular tourist destination in the mid 1990s and received
World Heritage-listed status in 1999. Hoi An’s Old Town is exceptionally

absence of cars from its historic streets makes it a perfect place to spend
time taking in the sights on foot and at a leisurely pace.
• Saigon: This southern metropolis is a buzzing city of commerce. With 7.2
million people, it is Vietnam’s largest city and seems to explode with noise
and chaos. Renamed Ho Chi Minh City after the Viet Cong victory, this city
is simply fascinating to explore. Colourful markets appear around every
corner and mopeds swarm the streets.
•M
ekong River: Flowing from Tibet through China, Burma, Laos, Thailand,
Cambodia into Vietnam, the Mekong River is known for its rice production,
alluring landscapes and rural communities. The banks of the river are lined
with local villages, some of which are no more than a collection of bamboo
structures designed to provide shelter for farmers and fishermen.
