Dental Report
T
he April 2015 dental half of the Mother Lode, San Quintin clinic was an epic clinic in many ways. Once again,
we had a record 4 dentists in attendance this April clinic - Dr. Theresa Makiyama, Dr. Bryan Krey, Dr
Christopher Spain, and me. Along with untiring and ever-essential help from Winston Burke and some great
emotional support from our very own birthday girl, Gwen, the four dentists/crew did awesome work along with breaking
a record or two.
For the first time in my recollection, this clinic performed more restorative procedures than extractions/pain
management. Although I find infection and pain management to be the key element in our visit due to our frequency
of being there along with our mission parameters, our four dentists chugged through the pain/infection lists like a
machine and was therefore able to dedicate much of the day to restorative dentistry. We extracted 30 teeth on
Saturday. We restored 39 fillings. With the limitations of the condition of our equipment - that's quite an incredible
task!

Winston’s first clinic, and hopefully not his last. He mastered his
“dental assistant” skills and speaks fluent Spanish.
Vision Report
T
he optical team of Bruce, Lena, Judy, and me couldn't have been busier.
We dispensed 60 of 63 new prescription glasses from the orders made in January, February, and
March. All patients were able to see at least the second line from the bottom on the chart when we
checked to see if the glasses were made correctly except for 1. It was determined, with the lensometer that
that pair was not made correctly. I will deal with that matter with the manufacturer.
We examined 65 new patients out of which 41 new glasses need to be ordered which will be dispensed next
month. A new digital pupillometer was also used for more accurate PD measurements for each eye (instead
of using a ruler).
In addition, we dispensed several reading glasses and gave out all the sun glasses that we had. I didn't count
those. About 150 people were expertly served by the optical group. Joe Zachwieja
