Dome Facilities Complete: Ready For The Fillies And Mustangs
The final construction
project of 2014 at SISD
is complete and ready for
the Mustangs and Fillies.
The two domes are not
only spectacular sports
facilities, they are also
FEMA approved tornado
shelters for the community. The domes are designed and constructed to
withstand an F5 tornado.
Each gym is defined by
Shallowater colors of red
and black. Each dome
holds a full size basketball court/volleyball court,
two large and two small
dressing rooms, four practice goals, and plenty of
Shallowater fan seating.
The conjoining area in the
domes contains a full sized
concession stand, coach’s
offices, and 5,000 square
feet of weight room area
for the athletes to train.
The 7th and 8th grade
Fillies basketball teams
will have the honor of
playing the first games
in the new gyms on
Monday, November 10.
Shallowater ISD will hold
a community open house
on Tuesday, November
11 beginning at 6 p.m.

Dr. Kenneth Border Named Superintendent Of Schools For Shallowater ISD
The Shallowater School
Board has appointed Dr.
Kenneth Border as the new
superintendent of schools
for Shallowater ISD.
The
announcement was made by the
board at the October
27 scheduled meeting.
Dr. Border, currently
the assistant superintendent with the district,
will replace Phil Warren
who is retiring later this
school year after 14 outstanding years as superintendent of the district.
Dr. Border has been with
the Shallowater district
for nine years. During
his time at Shallowater
ISD, he has served as the
middle school principal,
head baseball coach, secondary schools coordinator, district coordinator,
district coordinator for
TEKS resource system,
Executive Director for
the Shallowater Education Foundation, and assistant
superintendent.
Dr. Border has an extensive
educational
background. He completed his Masters of
Administration in Education from the University
of Texas of the Permian
Basin and received his
Doctorate in Education
from Baylor University.
After teaching and serving as assistant principal
at the junior high and
high school level for Ector County ISD, Dr. Border transitioned to Shallowater ISD in July 2006.
Dr. Border has been
awarded the TASSP Region XVII Middle Level
Principal of the Year award
in 2012-13 and 2014-15 as
a result of his exemplary
leadership in the district.
He has received the
honor of being named
a Twenty Under Forty
recipient through the
Young
Professionals
of Greater Lubbock by
the Lubbock Chamber
of Commerce in 2013.
Dr. Border expresses,
“I am proud of my role
as a team member within
Shallowater ISD and will
continue my sense of
teamwork as it relates to
our community. My excitement extends from the
past achievements that we
all have accomplished.”

The Singing Men of West Texas will travel to the Ukraine in April of
2015 to share the gospel through music and ministry. The group’s
last trip there in 2012 resulted in 4000 people making decisions for
Christ.
The Senior Adult Ministry of First Baptist Church of Shallowater is
sponsoring a fund raiser to send Music Minister Gary Koerner to the
Ukraine with this group of singing men.
The sale of HOMEMADE APPLE PIES will go towards the funding
of this trip. The pies will be available beginning October 29, 2014.
The price will be $15.00 per pie (or more will be appreciated). The
Pies will be frozen, ready to bake and would be great for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Pick-up and delivery will be available. To order

Mustangs Capture District Title In 53-40 Victory Over Brownfield South
Shallowater Mustangs
have
earned
their
third-straight
district title with a current record of 9-1
for the 2014 season.
On Friday, October
31 the Mustangs traveled to Brownfield on
Halloween night ready
to scare the Cubs with
their
determination
to win, powerful of-
fensive line and ball
stopping defense to
gain the district title.
In the 53-40 victory over Brownfield,
sophomore
Cooper
Ogle rushed for 325
yards of the Mustangs
402 rushing yards
against
Brownfield.
Westin Elliott finished
5-of-12
for
142 yards for three
touchdowns. Ninetythree of those yards
resulted in a touchdown pass to Ogle.
Jake McMillin also
contributed to the excitement with a 105
yard defensive touchdown for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs are
set to host the Tornillo Coyotes for the
final home game of
the season on Friday,
November 7 at 7:30
p.m. at Todd Field.
Plains Career Expo A
Great Opportunity For Students

students attended the South
Plains Career Expo on
Thursday, Oct. 30 where
approximately 600 business and college representatives filled the Civic Center Exhibit Hall.
The goal of the expo is to
increase students’ awareness of careers and allow them to gain a head
start on their future.
Students were given the

time is called, and that creates stress for the student.
This class is designed to
help students become so
familiar with the tests
that they do not have to
stress about them. Each
day students practice using a variety of methods
in order to be completely
familiar with what is expected on test day. Students are taught common
mistakes that students
make and what to watch
for; they are taught what
percentage of the test
covers what objectives;
Students at Shallowater
High School are taking
advantage of an ACT/
SAT Prep class. This
class is offered at 7:30 a.m.
Mondays – Thursdays,
and students have the opportunity to prepare and
practice for their upcoming ACT and SAT exams. Scotta Knight, SHS
counselor, is teaching the
mathematics portions of
the tests, and Carol Johnson, SECHS principal,
is teaching the English
and reading portions.
Some students are attending both sessions, while
some are attending only
the math or the English/
reading sessions. Either
way, students will have a
distinct advantage when
they take their college
entrance exams because
they will have been exposed to the different
test formats, the types of
questions each test asks,
specific test-taking tips
in each area, and common
mistakes to watch for during the testing. Texas
students are at a disadvantage when they take these
tests because they have
not been exposed to timed
tests. The TAKS was not
timed at all, and the new
STAAR tests have ample
time for most students
to finish and go back and
recheck their work. The
ACT and the SAT do not
have extra time. Most

to welcome Sarah
Panzau-Evans
on
Thursday,
October 30 to speak
to the high school
and 8th grade students of Shallowater.
Panzau-Evans
was a driven high
school student and
a former top college
volleyball
player.
In college, she began heading down
a destructive path
leading to drugs and
dangerous
levels
of alcohol. Her college volleyball career
came to a screeching halt when she decided to drive herself
home with a blood alcohol level nearly four
times the legal limit.
She was involved
in a serious car accident as a result of her
choice to drive drunk
leaving her critically
injured and losing
part of her left arm.
Since her recovery, which included
more than 30 surgeries, Panzau-Evans
has devoted her life
to speaking to teens
and college students
about how bad choices can have lasting consequences.
Shallowater students were impacted
and gained knowledgeable
insight
from Panzau-Evans
touching message.

be tested. The teachers
are varying the ways the
students practice, using
computers, practice tests,
and lecture/discussion.
The ACT and the SAT are
two totally different tests,
and what works for one
does not necessarily work
for the other. The class is
divided into eight weeks
of ACT preparation and
eight weeks of SAT preparation. At the end of the
class, students should be
well-prepared for either
test, and they will have
a working knowledge
of how to perform their
best on each different test.
Both teachers have commented on the attitudes
and behavior of the students that are attending. For a 7:30 a.m. class
that is strictly voluntary,
the students are working hard, asking great
questions, and participating well. SHS is proud
of these students and
their willingness to put
in the extra time and
work to better prepare
themselves for post-secondary
opportunities.

agriculture from Texas
Tech’s Ag department
on Friday, October 17.
Ag in the Bag is held each
fall in conjunction with
Texas Tech’s Ag Awareness week. The program
targets fourth-grade students and focuses on how
important agriculture is.
When speaking with
the fourth grade teachers, they mentioned that
the student’s favorite part
of the trip was learning about the process of
milking a cow and the
distribution of the milk.

Fifth Grade Science Class Experiments With Hovercrafts

The middle school students in Shannon Edwards’s fifth grade class
have been creating their
very own hovercrafts.
In their study of force,
they were asked to make
hovercrafts out of everyday items such as cds,
bottle caps, and balloons.
After combining the inflated balloon and the bottle cap, the students would

hovercraft two meters in
an allotted amount of time.
Edwards commented,
“It’s just a way for the
students to have fun and
learn at the same time.”

Middle School Art Students Help SHS Freshmen Plan Ahead
Local Volunteer Fire Department With Project Future
Helping spread the word
that the Shallowater
volunteer Fire Department will be having
their infamous haunted
house this year, sixth and
eighth grade art students
were asked to paint the
advertising
billboards
for the spooky event.
The classes worked as a
group on the project during their art class until
the signs were complete.
The perfectly painted signs were displayed
throughout
Shallowater
during
the Halloween season.

Shallowater freshmen participated in the Project
Future program on
Friday, October 17.

Building on the Tech
campus, watch the

Battle of the Mustangs: Shallowater Upsets Denver City With 29-26 Victory
The matchup of the
season ended in victory for the Shallowater
Mustangs as they met
Denver City under Friday night lights on October 24 at Todd Field.
Denver City traveled to
the matchup expecting
a win, but the Shallowater Mustangs sent them
home with the upset.
The first half of the
battle left Denver City
ahead 12-7 as the teams
headed into the third.
Jake McMillian, defensive back for the
Shallowater Mustangs,
had a game changing kick recovery in the
third quarter that led to
two back-to-back Shallowater
touchdowns.
With fans on their
feet and the momentum running high in
the fourth, Shallowa-
ter was trailing 26-22.
Westin Elliott pulled out
a 22-yard pass to wide
receiver Connor Smith
for a touchdown with
just 1:33 left in the game.
The Shallowater Mustangs fought until the
very end with two quarterback sacks against
Denver City and an inexplicable spike on the
fourth down with mere
seconds on the clock.
Shallowater Mustangs came out against
Denver City ready to
dominate.
Cooper
Ogle rushed for 119
of the team’s 139 total yards on 22 carries
for three touchdowns.
Quarterback Westin Elliott rushed for 20
yards on five carries
and threw for 117 yards
on five completions
and one touchdown.
The 2014 Mustangs
received top acknowledgements from Lone
Star Varsity for their battle against Denver City.
Landing at number four
on the area’s top football
teams and the powerful
offensive line earned a
place on the Lone Star
Varsity Super Team.

The main theme for
Red Ribbon Week this
year is ‘Love Yourself.
Be Drug Free.’ The
Intermediate campus
held a counsel session with Police Chief

Greg Pierce and a presentation with a drug
dog. Intermediate students also enjoyed a
drug free pep rally on
Thursday, October 30.
Eighth grade students joined Shallowater High School
students for an eyeopening presentation
by Sarah Panzau-Evans to close the week.

up each day to help
bring support and attention to the importance of the message.

Fillie volleyball players this
year. All teams had a great
season and we look forward

JV Fillies finished as undefeated district champions this year with a record
of 6-0 and 27-7 overall.
The freshman team was
21-7 and 4-2 in district
play claiming 2nd place.
The 8th grade A and B
combined
record
was
21-4 and the 7th grade
team made great improvement throughout the year.
The Varsity Fillies will
play Saturday, November 8 at 3:00 p.m. against
Tulia for Area at Plainview

Shallowater Pre-K Explores Local Fire Station
October is recognized
as fire safety month and
the Shallowater Elementary Pre-K studied the
letter “F” to coincide.
An exciting adventure
to the local Shallowater
Fire Department was a
perfect learning opportunity for these young
and lively Pre-K students

to put the two together.
At the fire station, the
children learned fire
safety practices, wore
the fireman’s gear and
hat, heard a smoke
alarm, climbed inside
and walked through the
fire truck, and held the
fire hose to spray water like a true firefighter.

Spook-tacular Halloween Fun At SISD
Shallowater students,
faculty, and administration were covered in pink the week
of October 20 - 24.
With the Elementary
campus paving the
way for the rest of the
campuses by holding
their 8th annual “Passionately Pink Day” on
Monday, October 20,
students were able
to purchase pink ribbons in honor and in
memory of those who
have been effected
by breast cancer.
The Elementary
campus raised over
$500.00 to be donated to Susan G.
Komen
foundation.
The High School
campus
wrapped
themselves in pink on
Tuesday, October 21.
Student Council members provided a “pink”
bake sale in the com-
mons area bringing in
$285.00 for the American Cancer Society.
The High School
students also held a
classroom competition
to see who could dress
up in the most “pink”
with the grand prize
being a donut party
for the winning class.
The classes of Rodney Jackson and Kaci
Price were the “pink”
champions for Shal-
lowater High School.
Middle School celebrated “Pink Day” on
Thursday, October 23.
The SMS Cheerleaders sold “Pink Pride”
t-shirts to help raise
funds and creatively
organized a “Pink Out”
pep rally. The Cheerleaders are donating
half of their proceeds
to Susan G. Komen.
Shallowater Intermediate ended the week
by flooding the campus with pink everything and raising $45
to donate to the American Cancer Society.
A friendly competition was held between
classes
to
see who could wear
the most pink with
each
item
counting toward the total.
Mandy Jeter’s fourth
grade class won a delicious ice cream party
as the grand prize.
They came to school
wearing
725
pink
items total as a class.
Each Intermediate
class also participated
in designing a massive “pink” ribbon on
the gym floor to help
commemorate
the
special day and to seal
the important message bringing awareness to our schools
and
community.
