Welcome Message
Welcome to ICCE2007, Hiroshima, Japan
Greetings from Conference Chair
Time flies. ICCE is now having its 15th conference after being
held in different Asia-Pacific regions over the past years.
ICCE is a major activity run by the Asia-Pacific
Society for Computers in Education (APSCE). Although ICCE
conferences are held in the Asia-Pacific, the participants are
not limited to researchers in this region. We have attracted
academics and researchers from different continents to our
previous conferences and this one. Therefore ICCE is a place for
the west to meet the east, and is an ideal place for cultural
exchange. We do hope its role can be maintained in the coming
future
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the
organizers, in particular Prof. Yoneo Yano and his team for organizing such a successful conference.
I would also like to extend my greatest appreciation to the programme co-chairs, Prof. Tsukasa
Hirashima, Prof. Ulrich Hoppe and Prof. Shelley Young, for their contribution to producing such a
quality programme. Of course, we must not forget Prof. Riichiro Mizoguchi, the chair of our
conference subcommittee, who coordinated all the conference matters. I would also like to thank the
hosts, JSET (Japan Society for Educational Technology), JSiSE (Japanese Society for Information
and Systems in Education) and Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. Without their
support, this conference could not have become real.
Welcome to ICCE 2007! I hope you all have good time here and enjoy the formal discussions
and informal chatting with friends coming from different parts of the world.
Fong-Lok Lee
President,
Asia-Pacific Society for Computers in Education

Welcome to ICCE2007, Hiroshima, Japan
Greetings from Organizing Committee Chairs
On behalf of the Organizing Committee for the ICCE 2007
Conference, it is my great pleasure and honor to welcome
guests to Hiroshima, one of the most famous places in Japan.
The members of the Organizing Committee recognize
the importance of this conference and the support provided by
so many people to help make this conference successful. We
recognize with gratitude the efforts of session conveners,
authors, and reviewers. We sincerely thank the Japan Society
for Educational Technology (JSET), the Japanese Society for
Information and Systems in Education (JSiSE) and the
Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications for hosting
ICCE
2007.
We
thank
the
Program
Committee
and
Implementation Committee staff members who have worked so
hard to prepare the conference and related events.
We hope that this conference will allow participants to share fruitful experiences and
knowledge related to information technology and communication technology for education.
Although Hiroshima is most famous because of the sad atomic bombing, it is important to
remember that this is also a vibrant city of great natural beauty. At this season of beautiful colored
leaves, that beauty is particularly obvious. For example, from the conference venue, it is possible to
see the picturesque Seto Inland Sea and Hiroshima Port. From the port, a high speed ferry goes to
Miyajima Island, a world cultural heritage site. Itsuku-shima-jinja Shrine on Miyajima Island is
considered to be one of the three most beautiful sights in Japan and at high tide, the torii gate
(shrine gate) seems to float on the sea. Near the city are other places of great natural beauty:
Setonaikai National Park, Hibadogo-Taishaku Quasi-National Park, and West Chugoku Mountains
Quasi-National Park.
Hopefully, after active discussions at the conference, you can have a rewarding experience
visiting historical sites and nature spots that Hiroshima offers.
We hope that you will have a productive conference in Hiroshima and wish you all an
enjoyable stay in Japan.
Yoneo Yano, The University of Tokushima, Japan
Organizing Committee Chair of ICCE 2007

Welcome to ICCE2007, Hiroshima, Japan
Greetings from Program Committee Co-chairs
The 15th International Conference on Computers in Education (ICCE 2007) is part of a series of
annual conferences encompassing a broad range of issues related to using information technology
for learning. Being international in participation, the ICCE conferences are hosted in the
Asia-Pacific region and are organized under the auspices of the Asia-Pacific Society for Computers
in Education (APSCE). With this 15th ICCE, it is our pleasure to announce a return to Japan
following up on the last ICCE held in Japan in 199 in Chiba. This year’s conference takes place in
the city of Hiroshima, a symbolic place for fostering international understanding and peace.
As every year, ICCE has invited contributions from the various fields of technology
enhanced learning. Within this range, the main theme of ICCE 2007 sets a special focus on
“supporting learning flow through integrative technologies”. This theme indicates a move from local
support of specific learning activities towards supporting learning and teaching processes in a
broader context beyond single tools and individual users, considering user/learner groups on
different levels of granularity as well as inter-operability mechanisms on the system level. The
value of integration is primarily characterized by improving the richness and directness of
educational interactions. The integration of interactive media and of learning processes can support
a smooth and seamless information flow in and between different learning settings. Ubiquitous
computing technologies with smart objects and non standard peripherals allow for flexibly
embedding support technologies in adequate physical settings and enable the integration of
physical and digital support. Similarly, mobile technologies open up new possibilities for integrating
learning activities between formal and informal settings. These and other issues will be taken up by
the four distinguished keynote talks and by the conference papers and posters throughout ICCE
2007.
The main conference comprises 4 keynote speeches, 53 full paper presentations, 43 short
paper presentations, and 36 poster presentations. These paper and poster presentations were
selected from 229 paper submissions (full paper submissions: 161, short paper submissions: 68) in a
careful peer-reviewing process. All full paper submissions and most short paper submissions had
three reviews. In the pre-conference, we have one Doctoral Student Consortium, 9 Workshops and
one Tutorial. Accepted papers of Doctoral Student Consortium and Workshops are published by two
volumes of Supplementary Proceedings.
-4-
We thank the program committee and the additional reviewers for their work which is the
essential factor to assure quality and continuity. The program co-chairs also would like to thank the
organizing committee and the implementation committee. This conference is jointly hosted by
Japanese Society for Educational Technology, the Japanese Society for Information and Systems in
Education, and Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan. Our special thanks go to
these hosting organizations.
We look forward to a stimulating and synergetic international meeting in the city of
Hiroshima, Japan, November 5-9, 2007.

Interactive Events
November 8, Room B
The aim of Interactive Events is to facilitate sharing experiential knowledge on learning system
development and evaluation methods, as well as research results. This encourages the progress of
both presenters’ and attendees’ research.
We regard interactivity as important for sharing experiential knowledge. We therefore do not
adopt an ordinary slide-centered presentation style but rather a demonstration-centered one.
Each presentation has 60 minutes demonstration time, so that participants can freely enjoy
interactive discussion.
