HERE’S WHAT YOU MISSED IN THIS WEEK’S PULASKI COUNTY JOURNAL
Activities begin at West Side Center
Amber L. Tomlinson
Excitement is building and the creation
of the West Side Center is taking shape as
the first activities of the summer have begun.
The West Side Center that was
y
,previously the Pulaski County Public
,Library Medaryville branch was the site for
dthe first summer reading program on June 1.
The summer reading program is sponsored
by the Pulaski County Public Library.
Several local children gathered as the
g
Purdue
Extension Office held a program on
,
eating
healthy.
Not only were the children
n
educated but so were the parents.
The summer reading program is the
first
of
several activities that will be held at
i
the
former
library. In December of last year,
r
the traditional use of the library stopped due
to the increasing cost per item and the lack
yof interest from the public.
,
At the time, the library trustees were
looking to enter into a lease agreement with
sanother entity so a presence of the library
mcould still be maintained.
,
The library then entered into a
formal agreement with Pulaski County
sHuman Services to relocate their West Side
sCenter that is currently located in another
Medaryville building.
Because the library wants to continue
to have a presence in Medaryville, the
esummer reading program for children is
continuing, along with Internet services,
neBooks, audiobooks, music, streaming video
and 24/7 WiFi.
“When the library board was attempting
tto decide what was going to happen with
the building, they knew that they wanted to
ehave a presence in the community still but
they were not for sure what that presence
e
would be,” said MacKenzie Ledley, library
executive director. “Another entity that was
in the community and was in need of a new
facility was human services at the West Side
Center. This will give them the opportunity
to come here and use the facility and allow
the library to offer the eServices.”
The current building that human
services is using has a hole in the roof and
other issues.
Ledley said the library board didn’t
want the building to become shuttered
up as some of the other buildings are in
Medaryville. The board has offered the
building to human services for $1 a year
and the board is providing a utility stipend
to cover the costs of electronic use in the
building.
The library left a number of books, a
printer, copy machine and several computers.
The library has done some maintenance on
the building, such as painting, some new
carpet, and some changes to the kitchen to
better accommodate the services that human
services offers.
The summer reading program will be
held at the West Side Center on Wednesdays
at 2 p.m. Events for both young and old
will also be held on the third Thursday of
each month beginning at 5:15 p.m. with the
Young Rembrandts programs.
Ledley said the library has also
partnered with the West Central Bookmobile
and bought several books that are available
for everyone.
Pulaski County Human Services is
currently working to move into the new
building. Human services will continue
to provide hot lunches and community
engagement programs.
