The 126th Annual Dinner is being held at
Fern Resort on Thursday January 21, 2016.
Invitations will once again be sent via
email. You are encouraged to make your
reservation well in advance for this very
popular Chamber of Commerce event.
There are only 300 tickets and we sell
out quickly.
We are fast approaching the deadline for
submitting Business Achievement Award
nominations. The event is held the last
Thursday in February, with about 250
people in attendance. The recognition
of being an award recipient is highly
regarded in the area business community.
The selection committee does not want to
overlook any worthwhile nominees and
appreciates input from our membership.
Keep in mind that you can nominate your
own business and you are also welcome to
nominate a business who is not a Chamber
member. Sponsorship opportunities are
available to all members and offer great
visibility for your business.

2015 BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The final special event of the year
coordinated by your Chamber of
Commerce for the community is the
Santa Claus Parade which is being held
on Sunday November 22, 2015 with
a 1:00 p.m. start. Support in the way
of band sponsorships from Chamber
members is integral to the success of
the parade. When people ask they are
most often very surprised to find out
what it costs to put on the parade. We
would like to thank members of the
Kiwanis Club for coordinating the bucket
brigade. Committee members are: Doug
Bunker, Chamber of Commerce Special
Events Coordinator; Joan Cavanaugh;
Eleanor Tinney; Roger Lippert; Peggy
Foley; Bob Cairns; Jeff MacEachern; John
Cook; Jeremy Stones; Jan Phillips; Wanda
Pierce; Lee MacKenzie; Phyllis Atkey;
Scott Wilson.

Usually at this time of year we tend to
sigh about cooling weather, and the
slow-down that is surely coming as we
enter the winter season. Well, that is not
the sentiment this year. As the year is

Orillia Square Mall
celebrates 40 years!
When Orillia Square Mall opened back in
1975, it was the era of bell-bottom jeans,
“boho” tops and fringe. Pierre Trudeau
was the Prime Minister of Canada, the CN
Tower was completed and Michael Bublé
was born.
Remember when…
• Dominion was the first grocery store,
then Loblaws in 1986, to Zehrs in 1988
and in 1999 to our current No Frills
• 1987-1988, mall wide renovation with
many interior upgrades and expanded
Food Court
• 1998, addition of a 50,000 sq. ft.
Canadian Tire and 25,000 sq. ft. Staples
Enjoying September Business After 5 hosted by Meineke Car Care and Legal Shield
• 1999 Shoppers Drug Mart relocated
from inside the Mall to a free standing
location in the parking lot
• 2012-2013, an “Extreme Makeover”
included extensive exterior and interior
upgrades including new flooring,
lighting, furniture and washrooms
On November 5th, 2015 the Orillia Square
Mall will celebrate 40 years in business.
Come celebrate this milestone and join
us for cake cutting, refreshments and
giveaways at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday,

have a chance to win a $140 Shopping

Employee Benefits
that won’t Squeeze
Your Budget
Rate stability, fair renewals and
innovative offerings make the Chambers
of Commerce Group Insurance Plan stand
out from the rest!
In business these days ‘budget’ is a word that comes up often when making
important business decisions. Sometimes it may feel like things are out of control and
there is no way to ‘budget’ for something like employee health and dental benefits
because how could you possibly know what the cost will be in the coming months with
so many variables. This is where the Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance Plan is a
game changer; it stands out from the rest for some very specific reasons;
It’s a not-for-profit and the sole purpose of the Chambers Plan is to
provide comprehensive, affordable benefits exclusively to Chambers of
Commerce members and their employees. Being a not-for-profit means
that the members benefit from surpluses which support the local
Chamber and the plan to help keep the rates stable and predictable!
Claims are fully pooled for firms with less than 10 employees; this means
that the benefits can be utilized without the concerns of a large increase
in premiums each year. For the past decade the Chambers Plan average
renewal has been 3.9% compared to other commercial insurers plans
where an increase of 10-15% per year is common!
You don’t always get what you pay for, but with a Chambers Plan you
actually get more! Included in every Chambers Plan are benefits such as
Best Doctors and Business Assistance Service. This additional coverage
helps protect the company as well as it employees, and at absolutely no
cost to your firm!
The Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance Plan might just be the perfect
solution for an employee benefit plan that will keep your budget in line. Contact us
to find out how a Chambers Benefit Plan can help you manage cash flow, build
employee loyalty and enhance your peace of mind!

Limited private mentoring will be offered on a qualified basis to provide
specific related advice.
The Chamber is proud to be able to offer this initiative as a benefit to

recommend that any new business owner attend this exceptional program!”

We are fortunate to live and work in a healthy and vibrant community. Our landscapes make this area
special. The Couchiching Conservancy really knows these lands – since 1993, we have been protecting
nature for future generations and to date help to protect an acre almost double the size of The City of
Orillia.
This year, we added a new venture as a way to get people out
enjoying the properties that we protect – the Passport to Nature.
These events offer different opportunities to get out with a
knowledgeable guide. Thanks to support from a number of
businesses, these events have been free to attend.
We need your help for 2016.
“I am so grateful for
the informative
leaders and learning
about all the
properties! I've
been so inspired! “
The Passport acts as a fundraiser for our conservation efforts, and
we want to keep the events free to community members. To
promote the events, we put together a full colour booklet that is
distributed throughout the region. Take this opportunity to connect with residents and let them
know that you care for the environment – become a supporter of the Passport to Nature.
Please get in touch with Tanya Clark at [email protected] or 705-326-1620 to discuss how
your business can make an impact on the entire community.
Thanks to the following businesses for their support in 2015:
The Gosling Foundation, Walker Industries, Lakehead University, Pelee Island
Winery, Kawartha Dairy, Georgian Bay Printers, Meridian Credit Union, Bird
House Nature Company, The Water Market, Remax – Ian & Franci Ross, Ontario
Waterway Cruises, K. McKechnie Architectural Design, Sunshine Carpet &
Flooring, McLean & Dickey, Art’s Clothing, Synergy Healthcare, The Villager,
The Orillia Packet & Times, Sunshine FM, Ontario's Lake Country, Rogers TV,
