LOCALS’ FURY OVER COUNCIL’S DECISION TO GRANT
NEW WASTE FACILITY PERMIT AT KERDIFFSTOWN
Despite almost 400 objections, residents of Naas were
shocked to learn earlier this month that Kildare County
Council had awarded a new Waste Facility Permit at
Kerdiffstown in Naas.
According to Kildare

are absolutely stunned
with this decision. The
Council is completely
ignoring the wishes of
Naas residents and our
elected politicians. Under
Irish law, the dump
operator is basically
self-regulating and there
is a serious risk of such
permits being abused.
The Council’s inexplicable decision raises
serious questions about
local planning matters”.
According to CAN,
they agreed to attend regular meetings with the
EPA and Kildare County
Council who publicly
stated that they would not
allow the same planning
mistakes
reoccur.
According to CAN, had
the Council reacted
promptly to previous
concerns from residents
about how the A1 Waste
operator was abusing its
waste permit, the Irish
public would not now be
facing a huge clean-up
bill. Following a local
lobby campaign, the huge
74 acre site was shut but
still contains over 3.1
million Tonnes of rotting
waste. The dump was
also the location of a
disastrous fire during
2011 which burned out of
control for almost 1
month. CAN fears that
history may be about to
repeat itself once again.

opposition to the new
application, we genuinely expected the Council
would listen to the
wishes of the public.
However by making
such an unusual and
bizarre decision, the
Council has made it

about Naas residents or
local businesses.
We cannot politely
state our frustration with
the Council and have
completely lost confidence in them. Clean Air

A lucky young Kildare man got the surprise of his life when he
won €250,000 on a National Lottery Scratch Card when
working his night shift recently.
The lucky winner bought a € 10 Money
Multiplier 40X Scratch Card at Bretts Centra
in Kildare Town on his way to work.
The man said he often buys a €10 scratch
card and on this particular night he waited
until his break to scratch the card and couldn't
believe his luck when it was revealed he had
won the a quarter of a million euro top prize.
“I was so surprised I wasn’t sure what to do,
so I rang my Dad straight away tell him and
he advised me to sign the ticket”,
he said.
Discussing his plans for his big win the
lucky man said, ‘I’m going to buy an apartment and look after my family with a few
treats. They keep me grounded, so I’ll be
sensible with the money and plan for my
future.’ The winner wishes to remain
private.

Man uses hammer to smash
up Naas Hospital E.D.
On Saturday, August 13th, a man went on a rampage in
the Emergency Department of Naas Hospital using a
hammer to smash up the area.
It is believed the man became irritated after having to wait to be treated and left
the building only to return moments later carrying two hammers.
The angry man who is believed to be in his late 30s proceeded to use the hammers to smash a number of windows and a glass door in the hospital while threatening staff before he fled from the Emergency Department.
The incident, which occurred at around 11.15pm, left many patients distressed.
It is understood that there were around twenty people waiting to be treated in the
Emergency Department
at the time, including
small children. Many of
these people were forced
to hide under chairs and
take cover anywhere they
could as the man went on
a rampage throughout the
area.
Thankfully nobody
was hurt as a result of the
actions of the man.
Need for index linked rents
Peter McVerry Trust, the homeless and housing charity, has called for the
Government to urgently bring forward legislation to link the cost of renting to the
consumer price index.
The charity made its
call following the publication of the latest rental
report by Daft.ie. The
report shows rents in
Kildare increased by
12.5% in the 12 months
to June 2016.
Pat Doyle, CEO of
Peter McVerry Trust,
said “The latest rental
market report by Daft.ie
presents a very worrying
picture and means it is
impossible to ignore the
urgent need for rents to
be linked to the consumer price index. The
Government must now
move to bring forward
legislation before the
Oireachtas within days
of its return following
the summer recess in
order to address the
issue.
“The increases documented in this latest
report show that this is a
nationwide problem with
rents up 12.5% in
Kildare where the average price of renting is
now €1,036. The cost of
renting in Kildare has
risen 47.6% since its
lowest point in the recession.”
He continued "Peter
McVerry Trust is calling
on the Government and
the
Minister
for
Housing,
Planning,
Community and Local
Government to take all
necessary steps to bring
into effect legislation
that will link rents to
changes in the consumer
price index. Recent history has shown that we
cannot rely on an
increase in housing supply to be an effective
control measure. The
evidence from the Celtic
Tiger period showed that
rents increased dramatically even during a period of record housing
output.”

2017 when planning is up for renewal so that will
provide another opportunity to see what the actual
practice at the site has been by then"

Kildare North TD Frank O'Rourke has said that Kildare
should benefit to the tune of € 380k from the recently
announced Town and Village Renewal Scheme by the Rural
Affairs Minister Heather Humphreys.

villages across the country. It is part of a €10
million scheme nationally
and Kildare should benefit to the tune of €380K".
He continued "In total
€380,000 will be available to Kildare and I have

The importance of Occupational
Therapy is fast becoming apparent in
our mainstream schools as well as in our
special education facilities to help
children with needs to access the school
curriculum.
In the classroom, children are compared daily with
their same age group and teachers are becoming more
aware of detecting the early signs of possible need. It
is internationally proven that early detection and early
intervention or treatment has the best possible
outcome in helping these children overcome their
difficulties.
The Sunflower Clinic is an independent
Occupational Therapist service operating across
Leinster and Munster and opened its newest clinic in
Naas 12 months ago. The Naas clinic specialises in
helping children and adolescents with a range of needs
to perform their best in school. In a recent interview
with Julie O'Sullivan, founder and head occupational
therapist at The Sunflower Clinic, she spoke of the
importance of a child's ability to learn. “If a child cannot sit still, it is difficult for them to learn effectively”.
“Learning involves four key aspects”, says Julie.
“Firstly, the child must be able to concentrate for long
enough to listen to what the teacher is saying. Then,
they need to be able to sit still and then process the
information. They need to attend to what is important
and be able to screen out what is irrelevant. Finally,
they need to be able to communicate what they have
heard and learnt, most often via handwriting.” These
vital components are grouped into Gross and Fine
Motor, Visual Perceptual, Movement Control and
Concentration skills.
Whilst the clinic gets a lot of enquiries about handwriting difficulties specifically, it is the other skills
that are often the source of the difficulty. “Think of it
like a pyramid”, says Julie, “where the more fundamental skills are at the bottom and the more complex
tasks, e.g. handwriting, are at the top”.
The essential role of the Occupational Therapist is to
work on these core skills to improve a child's ability to
perform the more complex tasks on the top of the
pyramid.
The Sunflower Clinic in Naas offers specific
Occupational Therapy assessments for handwriting
which are designed to quickly identify the areas that
require attention and is fully equipped to provide sensory integration therapy for its clients. The Naas clinic
also offers in-school talks for teachers and parents,
given by its clinical team-lead and Senior
Occupational Therapist - Michelle O'Donoghue, who
has spent several years abroad working with specialist
children's clinics. These talks are invaluable for teachers to understand the early warning signs of possible
need and offer practical and therapeutic advice on how
to manage issues that may arise in the school environment. Michelle was recently quoted as saying:
“Initially, it was challenging to try and get the message
about the importance of early detection and intervention out there but the talks have proven very popular
and we are often asked back for follow up talks with
parents, which is very encouraging.” She went on to
say: ”The earlier we can detect a possible issue, the
earlier we can target therapy at the specific area of
need and the child improves much better than if left
without therapy until they are older.”

€951,000 raised for charity
by The Rory Foundation
Rory McIlroy and his charitable foundation, the Rory
Foundation, announced recently that they raised €951,000 for
three children’s charities, including two based in Co. Kildare.
LauraLynn Children’s
Hospice, the Naas based
Barretstown and the
Johnstown, Kildare based
Jack & Jill Foundation all
benefitted from the
money, which was raised
throughout the Dubai
Duty Free Irish Open,
held at the K Club in
Straffan in May. Each of
the three charities will
receive €317,000 to go
towards specific projects.
Rory McIlroy commented "While winning
the Irish Open this year
meant a lot to me, being
able to give my prize
money to three local children’s charities made it
all feel much more special. I can think of no
charities as worthy or
deserving of support than
Barretstown, the Jack &
Jill Foundation and
LauraLynn Children’s
Hospice. I’m so proud of
how
much
my
Foundation raised and
I’m already looking for-
ward to new projects in
2017.”
Barretstown will direct
their funding towards a
new dining hall at their
Naas campus. The Jack
and Jill Foundation’s
donation will go towards
more than 19,800 hours
of home nursing care and
LauraLynn Children’s
Hospice will have
enough money to provide
two Clinical Nurse
Specialist Salaries, auxiliary expenses and administration for over two
years.

Healy has spoken out in favour of the
proposed sugar tax.
The Fine Gael councillor said "I am delighted

Head of the Royal
College of Physicians
Policy Group on Obesity,
Professor Donal O'Shea
has stated “a tax on
sugar-sweetened drinks
has the strongest evidence of effectiveness of
taxation approaches to
address overweight and
obesity. These include
sugar-sweetened soft
drinks, energy drinks,
fruit drink, sports drinks
and fruit-juice concentrates."
An article published in
the British Medical
Journal on October 31,
2013, states that a 20%
tax on sugar-sweetened
beverages would reduce
obesity rates in the
United Kingdom by
about 1.3%.
If you think 1.3%
seems very little, consider how much obesity
costs us as tax-payers".
Secondly she said "The
money we spend treating
obesity and the multiple
obesity related diseases
could better be spent
elsewhere.
"The cost of obesity to
the State and to the taxpayer has been estimated
at €1.64 billion a year. If
we fail to tackle the obesity epidemic it will continue to drain fiscal
finances, money that
could better be spent on
front-line jobs in our ho
pitals and community
policing or on public
infrastructure like roads,
transport, broadband. In
many countries with universal health insurance,
sugar taxes contribute to
the cost of universal
healthcare".
Finally the South
Kildare based councillor
said that the cost of free
healthcare or universal
health insurance in many
countries is paid for by a
minimum health insurance levy paid by all citizens and "sin taxes" like
taxes on tobacco, alcohol
and sugar. The less of the
latter tax, the more of the
former tax is needed in
her view.
"In summary then, a
sugar tax is not the only
solution to obesity- the
problem is more complex
than that. However, if we
are serious about improving our children's quality
of life, cutting the cost of
obesity to the tax-payer
and about universally
available healthcare, we
need to introduce evidence based initiatives
that work. We should of
course expect intense
lobbying by groups representing corporations
with billions to spend
getting messaging into
the public domain that is
more about protecting
profit margins than it is
about jobs.

and that of our nation's
children matters more"

New club opens for
children in Narraghmore
Volunteers from Narraghmore have been working hard
over the Summer to create a new and exciting club for
young people aged between 10 and 12 for the local area,
set up by Foróige Juniors.
Located in the recently
refurbished Band Hall
next to the Credit Union,
over 15 Young people
their siblings and parents
were present for a night
of activity, learning and
food recently at the club's
open night.
The club will be open
every Friday during the
school term from 6pm 7pm as the young people
get to know each other,
experience
working
together and learn in a
safe environment supported by the trained and supported
Foróige
Volunteers.
Club Leader Esther
commented, “It’s great to
have such interest and
support from the community for this to be able to
run. When this year is a
success we will be
recruiting new volunteers
to enable us to engage
with more young people
and this is a very exciting
prospect.”
A grant which was
approved by the KWETB
will be spent on items for
the club such as bean
bags and games that the
youngsters themselves
have discussed beforehand and approved the
purchase of.
Kildare development
officer Alan Judge commented, “When we allow
young people to actively
and consciously be
involved in their decision
making they are developing life skills that will
enable them to explore
action and consequence
in a supported, learning
atmosphere. A very exciting time for the young
people in Narraghmore.”

The Liz McDonnell Run is a memorial race in memory of
Celbridge student Elizabeth McDonnell who died at the age of

Hurling for Cancer Research
strikes the half million euro mark
The 2016 Hurling for Cancer Research charity match
held in Newbridge recently and organised by legendary
racehorse trainer Jim Bolger and two-time National
Hunt champion jockey Davy Russell raised €105,000 for
the Irish Cancer Society’s cancer research.
The charitable duo
have now raised over
€500,000 for the society’s vital research over
the last five years
through their celebrity
hurling match involving
Ireland’s top GAA,
horseracing and sporting
stars.
This year’s clash in St
Conleth’s Park in
Newbridge on August
9th saw Davy Russell’s
Best jockey for poll
position against Jim
Bolger’s Stars. When the
final whistle blew it was
Russell’s side which
claimed the glory for the
first time in five years,
with a score of 5:24 to
6:15.
Sporting celebrities
Niall Quinn, Davy
Fitzgerald, DJ Carey,
Katie Walsh and Micheál
Ó Muircheartaigh were
among the famous
names who lined out to
support the match.
Jim Bolger commented:
“Hurling for Cancer
Research is a great

fantastic game of hurling, to those who bought

The Irish Cancer

BIFE and IT Tallaght sign Progression Agreement Anne Maher A I D TA
Bray Institute of Further Education (BIFE) BIFE have just signed a new
Memorandum of Understanding with Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT) at the
BIFE campus. This is following the recent new agreement with BIFE signed by
IADT, Carlow IT and BIFE. This new agreement between Tallaght Institute and
BIFE will bring advanced entry to graduates of courses at BIFE to a wide variety of
courses in IOT Tallaght leading to honour degrees.

Dublin-born Anne Maher is one of Ireland's most respected voices in
ballet and dance, with an international career spanning over 30 years.
Having trained initially in Dublin, Anne was
awarded a scholarship
by the late Princess
Grace of Monaco, to
study at L'Acadamie de
Danse Classique in
Monte Carlo under
Marika Besobrasova.
Following her training,
Anne went on to become
a principal ballerina
dancing all of the major
roles in classical ballet,
touring all over Europe.
Anne subsequently
returned to Ireland and
established
Ballet
Ireland. She is one of
this country's biggest
advocates for ballet and
dance and is chairperson
of the Board of Dance
Ireland. She opened her ballet school in 1997 and
continues to teach alongside her commitments as
Director of Ballet Ireland.

The coláistí samhraidh offer a gateway to
a living culture and language in a vibrant social
and communal context.

languages. Local language activists are
working with the
local development
agencies to reverse
the language shift in
the Gaeltacht and
they recognise that
the Gaeltacht colleges

With winter just around the corner, are your trees safe?
Last winter was the wettest winter on record in many parts of Ireland, and the six
major storms that hit the country, brought with them, torrential rain and winds
