Shale Reservoirs: Giant
Resources for the 21st Century
Edited by J. A. Breyer
Memoir 97– Far from being
isotropic and homogenous, as
once naively envisioned, shale
reservoirs are complexly layered
accumulations of fine-grained
sediment. Geologic variation on
scales ranging from that of stratal architecture to
that of lamination within individual beds must be
understood in order to locate and exploit areas of high
production within shale reservoirs. Shale reservoirs
remain largely geologic plays – not merely lease
plays or strictly engineering plays made possible by
improvements in drilling and completion technology.

volume equip experienced practitioners and those just
entering the field with the theories, workflows, and
case history examples needed to make better reservoir
management decisions in the modern oil and gas field.

Thrust Fault-Related Folding
Edited by K. McClay, J. H. Shaw, and J. Suppe
Thrust Fault-Related Folding
Thrust fault-related folds form numerous important hydrocarbon traps in
sub-aerial and deepwater fold and thrust belts as well as in inversion fold and
thrust belts. This Memoir presents 16 papers on new advances in the analysis
and understanding of thrust-related fold systems including detachment folds,
thrust-fault propagation folds, wedge thrust-related fold systems and basementinvolved fold systems. Case histories and examples included in this book range
from the sub-aerial fold belts of the Tianshan of western China, the Zagros fold
belt in Iran, the sub-Andean fold belt of Argentina, and the fold belts of the Spanish Pyrenees, Taiwan, Wyoming, and southern California to the deepwater folds
belts of offshore Brazil and the Niger delta. Theoretical, geometric, numerical
and analog model studies of thrust-related fold systems combined with new seismic and field case studies highlight the challenges and new strategies needed to
understand and to explore for hydrocarbons in fold and thrust belt systems.

Hydrocarbons from Coal
By Andrei V. Belopolsky and André W. Droxler
Edited by Ben. E. Law and Dudley D. Rice
CD version of Studies in Geology 49
This study examines the stratigraphy and evolution of the Maldives isolated carbonate platform, in
the equatorial Indian Ocean. This study is based on
interpretation of the regional 2-D seismic data set and
data from one deep exploration well that resulted from
Royal Dutch/Shell during its exploration campaign in
1989-1991.
CD version of Studies in Geology 38
During the early stages of coalbed methane exploration and exploitation, in the late 1970s and early
1980s, there were many misconceptions about the
nature of coalbed gas accumulations that resulted
in a large number of unsuccessful ventures. Since
those early beginnings, there has been a rapid growth

STUDIES
Source Rocks in a Sequence
Stratigraphic Framework
Edited by Barry J. Katz and Lisa M. Pratt
CD version of Studies in Geology 37
Assessment of quantitative data within a sequence
stratigraphic framework permits a better understanding of the net versus gross source and reservoir thickness in a given locality. The 14 papers in this volume,
including case studies, describe such problems as
variability within source rock systems, geochemical
variability of organic matter and hydrocarbon products
as a function of depositional setting, and the relationship between accumulation of organic-rich strata and
sea level.

Created at the request
and with the underwriting of Norske Conoco (Stavanger) and the Conoco
Predictive Stratigraphy Group (Houston), this is the
response to their desire to find a published basinwide synthesis of the Stevens Sandstone system.
A synthesis of the Stevens system was warranted,
especially because of significant advances in
interpreting deep-water reservoir systems, greatly
improved seismic technology, and because much
post-1981 information resides in unpublished dissertations and provincial literature that is not widely
available.

Fractured Core Analysis: Interpretation, Logging, and Use of Natural and

CD version of Methods 8
This CD addresses the problem of distinguishing
natural fractures from induced fractures in both
oriented and unoriented core. Natural fractures include
any cored fracture that existed in a volume of rock
prior to initiation of drilling or coring-related stresses.
Induced fractures in core are those that develop during
drilling, coring, and subsequent handling. Many of
the procedures for distinguishing between the two
are based primarily on recognition of fracture surface
structures and fracture traces that differ between
natural fractures and induced fractures

Crack in the Edge of the World (audio)
By Simon Winchester
Simon Winchester brings his inimitable storytelling
abilities to this extraordinary event, exploring not only
what happened in northern California in 1906 but what
we have learned since about the geological underpinnings that caused the earthquake in the first place.
But his achievement is even greater: he positions
the quake’s significance along the earth’s geological
timeline and shows the effect it had on the rest of
20th-century California and American history. A Crack
in the Edge of the World is the definitive account of
the San Francisco earthquake. It is also a fascinating
exploration of a legendary event that changed the way
we look at the planet on which we live.

of trace fossils and ichnofabrics in core. After a
brief introduction to ichnology in Part 1, the atlas
provides an identification guide to the trace fossils
commonly met with in core in Part 2. Part 3 illustrates the types of messages recorded by biogenic
activity in sediments. Part 4 supplies guidelines for
defining ichnofabrics that are then illustrated by
a series of classic ichnofabrics in a variety of palaeoenvironments. Finally, several case histories are
presented in Part 5, that give “real life” examples of
applications to sequence stratigraphy and reservoir
description.

The Mediterranean Region: Its
Geologic History and Oil & Gas
By Michael Halbouty and Farouk El-Baz
In this brief review, the authors discuss the origin and
evolutionary pattern of the Mediterranean Sea and its
environs. The concept of seafloor spreading, as woven
into the earlier proposal of continental drift, provides
a scientific basis for the theory of plate tectonics. This
theory explains the physiography and geological characteristics of the Mediterranean Basin, which is viewed
as a “hollow” caught between the colliding African
Plate to the south, the Eurasian Plate to the north, and
the Arabian Subplate to the east. Within the basin and
around it, interactions of numerous microplates control
the shape of the landmasses and their destinies.
