MESSAGE FROM THE
PRINCIPAL
Mrs Kay Smith
So…. The end of term 3. The end of 13 years of school for Year 12.
This is a time of reflection and celebration as we get ready to farewell Year 12; reflecting
on how they have grown over the last 6 years; reflecting on the ups and downs of
adolescence; reflecting on what wonderful young adults they have become. Celebrating the
hard work they have put in over the last two years in particular; celebrating sporting
achievements; celebrating musical and artistic achievements; celebrating the relationships
they have formed and the friendships they have made. In my recent conversations with
many of them, they are looking forward to this next stage of their lives, but also looking
back with fondness (yes fondness!) on the memories that they will hold with them forever.
There is also an element of uncertainty about what the future holds, but I am confident that
they have the skills to be able to meet any challenge they encounter. It has been my
privilege to be their principal for the past two years.
As a school community, we
wish our Year 12 students all
the very best in their exams
and we encourage them to
celebrate safely. And to their
parents: well done, you made
it!
This edition of BUZZ is a
celebration of the times we
have had with Year 12. I
commend it to you and look
forward to a very busy Term 4
at school.

STAFF MEMORIES …
Here’s what some Evans staff, past and present, had to say about Year 12 2012!
Favourite memories? Year 12 Legal Studies - need I say anymore....."Legit"
The students who has changed the least? Mirza - You might have matured a bit, but you
have not changed much Mirza. Anthony Modderno - He sat in my year 7 class with the
same cheeky grin as he did in year 12.
If I could tell them one thing, it would be - stop making excuses and take the opportunities
that are offered to them.
Donna McGufficke
Favourite memories? The excitement on their faces in the kitchens for the first time
First impressions of students way back when? A group full of energy and questions!
The student who has changed the most? Elias Calabretta - has grown and found his voice!
he student who has changed the least? Mirza Merdanovic - still has the cheeky grin!
f I could tell them one thing, it would be ..... You will miss high school!
The student most likely to ........ Stay in my children's minds forever ... Jaze De Guzman.
When my children saw Jaze perform at MAAD FEST, they were in awe!
Tania Safar
My favourite year 12 memory is of my first day here at Evans. I walked into the class and
had a discussion with Hoareau about what was going on with 9PE1 and the where abouts
they should be up to. He left and Daniel Ennis proceeded to get all excited as he thought i
was a brand new student starting. I will never forget his face when i told him i was his
teacher..... Priceless.
Sarah Baldwin
I remember Alor when he could barely see over the counter and now he has to duck his
head! The beautiful music that Elias has played at numerous Maddfests over the years, so
lovely that it nearly makes you cry and the voice of Jaze and Aromis soaring with enthusiasm and joy will stay in my memory for some time. The surprising ability of some students
to perform like Hayley , Ivan and Lorenz in Maddfest has made me in awe of their talent. The quiet, shy kids like Teigan C, Jacquelene and Taron who have grown up to become such pleasant people. The students from the IEC like Ngor, Kirolos and Andeer who
have a chat and laugh with us (and can take a joke). As Year 12 have grown up the conversations have changed that we, in the front office have with them, students like Daniel,
Anthony, David, Naem, Shawal and Mirza have changed from students who you wanted to
strangle to cheeky students who make you laugh. (We are still waiting for the coffees,
chocolates and flowers, guys.) To see students travel through to Year 12 is always surprising and the student that you thought might not make it can sometimes surprise you (as
many have), turning into such a lovely person, pleasant and cheerful, showing their ability
to grow. Good luck to all of Year 12 you don‘t know until you try just how damn good you
can be, so give it your best shot you never know where you might end up.
With love from the wonderful ladies in the front office.
It is with mixed feelings that we say goodbye to two of our Year 12 students this year.
Amanda Groat and John Bethune.
Amanda has had the pleasure of being the first girl in the Autism Unit and has fought hard
for women‘s rights in the workplace often finding solace with her head buried in a novel.
During her time with us Amanda has participated in all our Community Ed programs and
Work Education programs very enthusiastically. Especially when it comes to her skills in
spending money on Community Education we have no doubt that Amanda will have no
problem making purchases and furthering her video collection once she leaves school.
We are proud of all her achievements and we are sure that she will go on to achieve whatever she sets her mind to and make her mark on the world. You have touched our hearts
Amanda.
John, John, John..... what can we say? What an amazing journey we have all been on
from the moment you and your scruffy head of hair arrived in year 7 all those years ago.
Hundreds of adjustments and thousands of blinks of those darn florescent lights later here
you stand on the edge of life without us! Now would be the time to consider our offer of
returning to Evans High School LAF to continue your unpaid work as a computer genius.
Well if you ever get stuck for work you know where we are. All jokes aside John you have
gained a lot of respect around the school for your abilities and the way in which you have
grown over the years (although your Math teachers would beg to differ) We at the LAF
thank you for your contributions and wish you all the best in your future endeavours.
From everyone in LAF
I have many wonderful memories of this year group, and it‘s hard to imagine this school
without them! Some people have been stuck with me for a very long time—Teigan Cannon,
5 years. What can I say—you survived that long in a classroom with me, that probably deserves some kind of medal!
One of my favourite memories of this year group would be my class with them in year 9
and 10. The obsession with finding our where I lived (a street with a tree name …. ―WRITE
THAT DOWN!!!!‖) The two years echoed with that phrase—and I don‘t know if it was flattering or a little creepy when, after collecting books to mark them one day, I discovered that
―write that down‖ was not just a catch-phrase. I still have that list somewhere, just in case I
forget where I live!
Year 7 puppet shows with three little pigs on plastic spoons. Year 11 ―Oh Captain My Captain.‖ Year 12, with Optimus studying the play about the pig, and Teigan trying to convince
me that ―your face doesn‘t work with everything!‖ Curry puffs. 5 minutes of Hayley time.
Emilie trying to have a battle of wits with me (it‘s hard when you are unarmed). John‘s thinly veiled intolerance of everything we talked about. Jordan constantly looking stressed at
me. Bec making everyone smile. I‘m running out of space on the page, but I‘m very grateful
for the wonderful memories of this great class. Keep calm and BE AWESOME!!! I know
you can all do amazing things, as long as you believe in yourselves.
Tamara Rodgers.
FAREWELL FROM TAS!!!
Year 12 Hospitality 2012
What a team! Small, yet effective. You‘ve come a long
way and really grown together as a team since that first
function, a graduation for 150 people. We‘ve taken on
big functions undaunted and never let our guests know
about the organised chaos behind the scene. Thank
you for making it
look easy to pull
off functions like
the Principal‘s
morning tea and the Trade Centre opening ceremony
to name but a few. This year has been so busy what
with starting the café and with so many functions that
we‘ve had to think on our feet most of the time and as
we all know nothing ever goes to plan in the kitchen.
Thanks for being happy, flexible, putting up with my
nagging, my wanting to have things done to perfection and choice of music. Now get out there and go
grab your future with both hands.
Mrs Parenzee
Year 12 VET IT
To Taron Owens, and Kirolos Habashy from the Year 12 VET Information Technology
class… you have been a welcomed part of the Computer Administrators group at Evans
High School. The willingness and perseverance you have shown in supporting the staff
and students with ICT has been greatly appreciated. Thank you for all your hard work and
patience Thankyou to all students who have gone above
and beyond the call of duty to offer technology support
around the school.
Year 12 Constructions students .
The TAS staffroom wouldn‘t be the same without you.
You helped create our lunch room, by creating a walkway
from the staffroom to the old store room.
For Evans High School you resurfaced pavements, renovated a toilet block and were always willing to help with a
numbers other jobs.
Ms Safar
To tell the truth or not to tell the truth about this group? That is the question. The truth is that there
are many stories both funny and concerning about the ―achievements‖ of this particular group of
young people that I absolutely have to share with the rest of the world. I inherited this group as quiet,
shy, diligent Year 10 students ready to take on the challenges of the School Certificate. They
worked steadily and even sang along to the song ―I love you baby‖ made famous by Heath Ledger in
10 Things I Hate About You, however they did draw the line at dancing.
During the Preliminary year, we had the opportunity to attend several excursions; however the most
memorable would have to be the one to the Opera House to see the Shakespearean play Much Ado
About Nothing. Emily kicked off the fun when she was hit with a bout of sickness and a particularly
bad migraine which saw her feel very nauseous. We were sitting on the floor, Emily trying to get
some fresh air from the vents and me mopping up the train. But really the walk over the Harbour
Bridge that will remain as the most memorable moment. All I can say is that I have a picture on my
desk that captures the beauty of Sydney Harbour and the security guard was a very friendly man!
Macbeth has featured heavily in our memories. When Bell Shakespeare visited our school to do a
workshop on Macbeth, Tristan became the hero of the show playing the role of Pedro with the actors. He also became notorious for his Dr Seuss response in one section of his exam, but luckily he
has learnt a lot from that experience! And, when we went to watch a performance of Macbeth, we all
remember Jessica Andrawes‘ question: ―Where‘s Hamlet?‖ But more on that later....
Although our class dwindled as the pressures of Advanced English hit, those that stayed have certainly forged some memories as a class. Firstly, Daniel who teaches if I am in absentia for any reason – away from school, running late to class or if I am called out on HT issues. I even came back in
once and listened while he continued to teach from my notes – you have a career as an English
teacher waiting for you Dennis!. He was also the first to accomplish the difficult task of peeling an
orange keeping the peel in one piece. The Guinness Book of World Records is looking for you!
Another classic moment that will never be forgotten is the debt of gratitude owed by the class members especially Taron, Emma, Aromis and Sabine to Elias who spent twenty minutes doing his seven minute presentation on Dracula so that they did not have to do theirs any time soon.
Food is always a theme in my life and so it was natural that this should extend to my Year 12 class.
One food that was enjoyed by all the class were our cheesy melts. Every now and then we would
have a rewards day when I would bring in some Arabic bread and some cheese; we would set up
the sandwich press and create our cheesy melts ... while we worked of course!
Again excursions were important and we relished the opportunity to see some great plays, but
Teighan ―no show‖ Brown often kept us waiting at the station, phoning her from there to check if she
was on her way or not. Playing words with friends with many of my students (Jessica C, Jess A,
Taron and Tristan) was always fun – they could lord it over me when they won and get advice on
their assessment tasks through chat. The greatest source of amusement over the three years, however, must be Jessica Andrawes. We have a dedicated a section in a book entitled ‗Jessisms‘. Although other people have been known to make an occasional odd comment, Jess takes the cake
with her ditzy comments. The latest comment, for which I will not accept any responsibility, was ―All
of my teachers have left accept for Mrs Makhoul‖. So Year 12, it is true that others may have bailed
out, but we stuck it out together; we have waded through tomes
(big, big books!) and mastered Shakespearean language; we
have helped each other when someone was lost on what was
going on and done it all with smiles on our faces (except when
the dreaded door knock came). It has truly been a pleasure
working with you all and I wish you the best of luck for the future. See you all on words!

AIME 2012
The Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience
and Evans High School keeps striving to deliver
on the maxim that ‗Indigenous means Success‘
The 2012 AIME Outreach Program means that
our students head in to the city and visit the University of Technology. The program is conducted
over three full days throughout this year.
As usual our students look forward to engaging
with their university mentors and getting stuck into
all the activities during the day.
The Outreach Program will deliver the mentoring
experience to our Year 9 & 10 students, while the Year11 & 12 Leadership and Development Program means that many of the who students already connected with AIME will be able to remain
engaged in AIME sessions to help them achieve their academic goals.
The next and final AIME day for this year is 20 November which is week 7, term 4.
Some of our AIME mentees have stepped up to begin to mentor students from the Coreen School.
Two periods a week for the remainder of this term and four weeks of term 4, our students will support the Coreen students to deliver an Aboriginal education program in one of our local primary
schools. Walters Road PS has come on board and the kindergarten students will have some great
fun learning about a few Aboriginal dreamtime stories and doing some art activities.
We will continue to offer and support our students in opportunities for success and to step up to
meet the academic and leadership challenges in school life.
Students participated in the R U OK? Day activities on Thursday 13 September, a national day of action dedicated to inspiring all people of all backgrounds to regularly ask each other
‗Are you ok?'
By raising awareness about the importance of connection and
providing resources throughout the year, the R U OK? Foundation aims to prevent isolation by empowering people to support
each other through life's ups and downs.
Students completed quotations in PMF and started conversations that may have possibly changed their lives. Thank you to
all students and teachers involved.
R U OK? Who are you going to ask?

Ready Steady Cook!
Students from CS1L, CS2P and CS2P3 went on an excursion to the Channel 10 Studio in
Pyrmont to be part of the audience for the recording of Ready Steady Cook on August 1.
The students met Mrs Samuel, Mr Morgan and Mrs Pather at Blacktown Station where they
caught the train to Central Station. They then got the tram to the Sydney Fish Market stop.
It was a short walk to the studio building. The students and teachers sat out in the garden
and had recess before they went into the studio. It was amazing to see a recording studio
for the first time. They watched chefs Shane Delia and Alastair McLeod cook delicious and
interesting food using various ingredients. The host, Colin Land was very entertaining and
funny. Students saw how a recording studio works with many cameras and floor crew
working together. At the end of the day everyone in the audience got a shopping bag, a
bottle of water and a Lindt chocolate to take away. It was a very long but an enjoyable and
interesting day.
IEC Inter-Oratory Competition
On Wednesday 29 August 2012 the InterIntensive English Centre Oratory Competition
was held at Chester Hill Intensive English
Centre. Seventeen students from over half of
the Intensive English Centres in the state
competed in this prestigious competition.
Evans Intensive English Centre was represented by three speakers: Charles Francisco,
Merick Miglani and Juliet Mucunabitu and they
were accompanied by Karifa Mansaray (manager) and Mr Cheeseman (coach).
The competition was of a very high standard and featured speeches on the topics of the
Olympics, Teenage Pregnancy, Racism, Boat Arrivals and Belonging. Our three speakers
all spoke on the topic of Racism. Charles, Merick and Juliet gave highly polished performances and Juliet Mucunabitu was awarded second prize – a gift voucher for $50.
The prestige of this event was reflected by the calibre of the judges and the sponsors. One
of the judges was the head of the NSW Multicultural Programs Unit and one of the sponsors was the National Manager of Optus.
Congratulations to Juliet, Charles and Merick and to all of the teachers who assisted them,
especially Mrs Cheeseman who provided them with additional speaking practice in front of
many IEC classes.

Coles Sports for Schools Initiative
The PDHPE department would like to thank all parents, carers, staff and students who
shopped at Coles and collected Sports for Schools vouchers. We received more vouchers
this year than we have in the past and these will soon be exchanged for brand new sporting equipment for students. Your support in this initiative is greatly appreciated.
Jump Rope for Heart
Year 7 and Junior IEC were involved in the Jump Rope for Heart Program this term. This
fun interactive program develops fundamental movement skill and encourages healthy
lifestyle behaviours in kids. The Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart also raises
important funds to assist in the continued research of heart disease as well as the running
of health programs. Students were involved in a workshop on the 16th of August where a
guest speaker from the Heart
Foundation informed them about the
importance of participating in the
program as well as teaching them
some fun skipping skills. On
September 13th, all students
participated in the official Jump Off,
where they were able to demonstrate
their skills in a fun and enjoyable
environment. All students are to be
commended on their fundraising
efforts and participation in this program.
Premier’s Sporting Challenge
Throughout Term 3, classes from various year groups in the High School and the IEC were
selected to participate in the Premier‘s Sporting Challenge. The challenge involves
students accumulating as many hours of physical activity as they can, in order to raise
money for Evans High School and win prizes for themselves. Students have really
embraced the challenge this year and are working towards its completion. Next term,
students will be awarded with prizes for rising to the challenge and participating in the most
physical activity, so listen out to hear if you are one of the winners!

EVANS HIGH
SCHOOL
JUST DANCE!!
Term three has been a massive term for our dance ensemble; members have traveled all over Sydney representing the school at multiple events.
The dance ensemble entered the 2012 City of Sydney Eisteddfod held at University of Sydney at Kensington; they were up
against 34 other schools,
unfortunately didn‘t place but represented the school well. Week three was a very busy
week for our dancers as they travelled to Sydney and across the western Sydney region
performing. This year Evans had the opportunity to perform at the 2012 simultaneous
launch held at martin place. 10 dancers were apart of the three hundred strong ensemble
of dancers from across Sydney who came together to officially launch Public Education
Week on the 30 July 2012. On Wednesday 1 August our dancers along with our vocal
ensemble travelled to Mt Druitt Westfield where they entertained shoppers with three
strong performances including a strong performance form our dance ensemble. Friday saw
a close to Education week where we travelled to Rooty Hill RSL as to be apart of an audition only ―Creating the Future‖ public education concert. All of our dancers performed to the
best of their ability even with wary eyes from such a big week.
To cap off an amazing term, the dance ensemble travelled to castle Hill High school to
compete in their finally eisteddfod Curtain call Song and Dance festival. Against three other
schools and hitting the stage in the middle of the sections, Evans High School performed in
true Evans style to take out the section with 86.5 marks out of a possible 100, a clear 1.5
marks ahead of second. Students received words of congratulations form private dance
studios that attended the eisteddfod. Students received comments from the adjudicator on
their energy levels, how enjoyable it was to watch them and their technical level. Congratulations ensemble you have work extremely hard and your efforts are to be commended,
you deserve the up coming break.
Miss Baldwin, Dance ensemble teacher
