Beacon Park Pavilion - Design Selection
Designed by D’Ambrosio Architects.
Further to public consultation, Council has selected the design concept above as a basis for the creation
of a new pavilion structure at Beacon Park. Town staff will be working with the architects and making
modifications respecting the overall height, size and positioning to ensure the structure fits the use and
greenspace of this waterfront park. Thank you to residents who provided their feedback.

Garbage and Yard
and Garden Waste Pick Up
FREE
Alpine Disposal has been awarded the contract for garbage and
yard and garden waste pickup effective July 1, 2008 for the next
two years. As Alpine previously held the contract, the pickup
schedule remains the same.
The Sidney Fire Department is embarking
on a program to try to ensure every resident
of Sidney has a working smoke alarm.
Statistics show that residents with
working smoke alarms in their home
have a 50% better chance of surviving a
fire. With this in mind, members of the
Fire Department will install, at no charge,
a new smoke alarm in any residence
within the Town that doesn’t have
a working smoke alarm, including new
batteries. Please contact the Fire
Department at 250-656-2121 to arrange
an appointment.
Residents are reminded to place their can/bag at curbside by
7:00 am on their pickup day. The contract provides for the pick
up of one can per week of garbage and three clear bags
per month of yard and garden waste. Should you have
extra, stickers can be purchased at the Town Hall for $3.50 for
each additional can of garbage and $2.50 for each additional
clear bag of yard and garden waste. Questions? Please
contact Alpine at 250-474-5145 or the Engineering Department
at 250-656-4502.
Beacon Avenue Connector
The Town, in partnership with the Victoria Airport Authority,
will be reconstructing the upper subgrade and resurfacing
Beacon Avenue West and McDonald Park Road, between
Henry Avenue West and Galaran Road. The project work will
require a full closure of the Beacon Connector to all but
local business traffic during the construction period. It is
anticipated that the closure will be for two weeks beginning
August 5. Inquiries should be directed to the Engineering
Department at 250-656-4502.
LiveSmart BC Program
Attention homeowners - save money and reduce your carbon
footprint by taking part in the BC government’s new LiveSmart
BC: Efficiency Incentive Program. The program provides
rebates and incentives when you make energy efficiency
upgrades to your home. Upgrades include Energy Star
windows and doors, insulation, hot water heating,
high-efficiency furnaces, weather stripping and caulking.
The first step is to arrange for an in-home energy assessment
by a certified energy advisor. The energy advisor will
provide you with your home’s EnerGuide rating, recommended
energy efficiency improvements and handle the paperwork of
getting rebates and incentives from both programs. For more
information, go to www.gov.bc.ca/empr/popt/livesmart_bc.html
or call 1-866-430-8765.
Smoke Alarms
Water Meters
Please keep meter boxes clear of plants,
dirt, gravel, etc. to provide direct access
for the Town’s meter readers.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Lochside Drive
Local Area Plan Taking Shape
Please note that under the Motor
Vehicle Act parking vehicles along
a highway for the purpose of
displaying vehicles “for sale” is
prohibited. Lochside Drive is the
southern entrance into our beautiful,
sea-side community. The Town
removed overhead wiring and installed
them underground to enhance the
beauty of this area. In the near future,
Council will be considering proposals
for a new comprehensive design of the
walkway and boulevard area which
will include: landscaping, walkways,
seating areas, parking, etc. Sidney
welcomes visitors and residents to
enjoy this waterfront area, however
discourages parking of RVs, trailers,
etc. for extended periods of time.
The process of drafting the Local Area Plan (LAP) has begun.
Feedback gathered from earlier public participation, including an
Urban Design Workshop and a Downtown Design Charrette, is
helping the Steering Committee and Town staff move forward to
develop the draft document. The Plan will focus on concepts and
issues related to building design and heights, residential density, the
location and design of public spaces, pedestrian connections,
circulation, parking and landscaping. Once drafted, it will be
forwarded to the public for further review and comment before it is
finalized and adopted as part of the Official Community Plan.
Feedback from the community will help to ensure that the final Plan
accurately reflects the goals of Sidney. Look for advertisements in
upcoming issues of the News Review for details on when and
how you can review the document and give your input. Further
information can be obtained on the Town’s website or by contacting
the Development Services Department at 250-656-1725.
Line Painting
Repainting of road markings is
underway. Please use caution while
driving around cones to avoid the
wet paint and other motorists.
Boating Safety
Knowledgeable boaters are safe boaters. Transport Canada and the
Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary work together to promote boating
safety through public education, boating safety activities and
pleasure craft courtesy checks. A member of our local Coast Guard
Auxiliary, Unit 36 Sidney, will conduct these courtesy checks
for you upon request. All legally required safety equipment is
checked as well as certain optional equipment. To contact Unit 36
and to arrange an inspection, please email [email protected].
Town Staff Retirements
Margaret White is retiring after 35 years of
service in the Sidney Motor Vehicle/ICBC
Services Branch. Maggie has been a hard working
and committed employee and she will be missed.
We wish her a wonderful and relaxing retirement!
Anton Belusic has retired after almost 20 years of
service in the Public Works Department. Anton,
as the Foreman, provided strong leadership and
direction and he will be missed by his crew. Best
wishes for a happy and healthy retirement!
