In many parts of the world people still
believe in witchcraft, family spirits, and
evil spirits. They think there is such a
power as ancestral spirits that control
their lives and punish them if they do
wrong or fail to observe their tribal cus
toms. Such people believe that diseases
and troubles are caused by supposed
spirits or by witches that have cast spells
on them.
People accept such beliefs largely be
cause their fathers and grandfathers be
lieve them. An insect caught in a
spider's web will struggle desperately to
free itself, as will a wild beast that has
fallen into a trap. But the belief in witch
craft and spirits has for centuries been a
way of life for so many that they do not
even attempt to resist. Yet there is a
way out.

Jesus went about preaching and telling
people about the real God, the real allpowerful Supreme Being. He explained
that God was good and that He had
made everything. The Bible says, "God
saw every thing that he had made, and,
behold, it was very good";' and "God
created man in his own image, in the im
age of God created he him." 2 These
words in the first chapter of the Bible are
the basis of what Jesus preached. In
Matthew Jesus says, "Be ye therefore
perfect, even as your Father which is in
heaven is perfect." 3 So we are God's
children—all of us—and if we wish to
know what man really is, we must first
know what God is. This was what Christ
Jesus' work was—to show people what
God is, and how He cares for them.
Jesus proved his words by his deeds.
He healed people of all kinds of diseases,
even those who thought they were pos
sessed by evil spirits. He also healed
people of sin and raised the dead. He
used spiritual laws to heal people of dis
ease and sin.

Christian Science teaches us how to
use the same power Jesus employed.
He healed through his clear understand
ing of God and His all-power and good
ness. Jesus told his followers to do the
same works that he did. And this is pos
sible through Christian Science, which
was discovered by Mary Baker Eddy in
America in 1866." She was healed of the
effects of a serious accident as she read
in the Bible about Jesus' healing of a
paralyzed man.5 Having always loved
the Bible, she was led to study it more
deeply for three years. She prayed to
learn how Jesus had healed through an
understanding of God's laws. She dis
covered these laws and wrote a textbook
called Science and Health with Key to the
Scriptures. This book contains the com
plete Science of God and man, which
Mrs. Eddy proved by healing many who
were sick, as have many thousands of
her followers.
Christian Science teaches the Bible
truths that God is Spirit, Life, Truth,
Love. He is all-power and is present
everywhere. He is not like a big man in

the sky or a cave but is All-Spirit, Mind,
or intelligence, and He loves and cares
for all His children—all of us. When we
truly understand God, we can no longer
fear evil in any form. If we pray with this
understanding, we can heal ourselves
and others.
God never created evil in any form,
whether as witchcraft, sickness, death,
or any other trouble. He sent His Son
Christ Jesus to heal sickness, sin, and
death, cast out devils, and destroy evil,
because these are not according to
God's will, or law. There are many rec
ords in the Bible where so-called devils,
or evil spirits, were cast out and diseases
healed. In one instance Jesus healed a
madman who lived by himself among
the tombs and could not be tamed.
After the devils, or evils, had been cast
out, the man straightway became sane.6
In Matthew we read that people
"brought unto him many that were pos
sessed with devils: and he cast out the
spirits with his word, and healed
all that were sick." 7 Jesus' followers
also healed the sick.

Jesus said we should follow in the way
he taught and do the same works. He
came to destroy evil. Well, where does
evil come from, then? It comes from the
same source as mistakes in arithmetic;
and these come from not knowing
enough arithmetic or from disobeying its
rules. Evil also comes from believing the
wrong things or being taught wrongly. If
a child is taught that 2 + 2 = 5, he will
make mistakes in his arithmetic until
someone comes along and proves to him
that 2 + 2 = 4. If we disobey God's laws
or are ignorant of them, we may find
many troubles coming into our lives.
Now, God is all good; He is the only
cause, the only power, the only real Mind
or intelligence. And man is really God's
child or image. Man is not really made
up of flesh, blood, and bones, with a sep
arate mind of his own. This is a false
picture of man, which leads to trouble
and opens the door for the evil sugges
tions of witchcraft.
Christian Science teaches that all dis
eases and evils are due to a wrong belief
and are not caused by matter. It

teaches that the remedy is in the correct
understanding of God, good, as the only
Mind (with a capital M) or Spirit (with a
capital S).
Believing in false minds or spirits is
against God's law because He did not
create such things. There cannot be any
spirits or minds to cause any trouble, so
why should we believe there are? To be
lieve in such is to disobey God, because
it would mean we think there is some
power or creator apart from God.
Because God is Love and loves all His
children, He looks after us and keeps us
well. Because God is Life, His children
reflect life forever, no matter what
seems to happen to a material body.
The real you and I are spiritual and per
fect now, and always will be. This is
what we each have to discover, and
Christian Science shows us how. Think
of a number written on a blackboard. If
the figure is rubbed out, you haven't de
stroyed the number. So the real man re
mains forever as God's image and
likeness and cannot turn into an evil
spirit.

Evil seems real to those who believe in
it or fear it, or who sin or do not know of
God. The remedy for evil is to stop be
lieving in it, stop sinning, and start fol
lowing God and worshiping Him only.
Through loving God and one another
and keeping our hearts pure and fear
less, we are protected by God's law.
Those who practice witchcraft find it
next to impossible to affect people who
are good and pure and whose hearts are
loving.
The Bible warns people against believ
ing in witchcraft, evil spirits, and divin
ing. In I John we are told to judge rightly
the spirits, or thoughts, that come to
us. It says: "Beloved, believe not every
spirit, but try the spirits whether they are
of God: because many false prophets are
gone out into the world." 8 We can
choose to accept only good thoughts,
which come from God. Mrs. Eddy says
in Science and Health, "There are evil
beliefs, often called evil spirits; but these
evils are not Spirit, for there is no evil in
Spirit." 9
Christian Science shows us that we

Sianse Kretiene ekolakisaka biso
need to check all the thoughts, or "spir
its," that come into our thinking to see
whether they are good and come from
God, or are bad and therefore come
from ignorance of God. Because the real
man reflects God, or Mind, he has no evil
thoughts, or spirits, to send out or to re
ceive. Such thoughts come from the ig
norant, false mind, which has no power
or intelligence.
Because witchcraft and spirits have
no real power or intelligence, there is no
need to fear them. Another name for
this evil belief is hypnotism, and it can't
touch us when we know that God, good,
is the only Mind or power. This Mind is
our real Mind, and we should deny that
there is any evil mind, or spirit, any
where to harm people.
God, Spirit, fills all space. Man who is
God's child cannot therefore have any
thing to do with evil spirits. The real you
and I live forever as God's image and
likeness. This is true now and always
and for everyone, so there are no evil or
good spirits of the departed, for we all

reflect God, Spirit, Mind. We should free
ourselves from any beliefs in evil spirits.
Then we won't suffer from these beliefs.
The belief that something called spir
its punishes people to keep them in right
ways of living cannot be true because
God lovingly governs us all. We have
only to love and obey Him in order to be
blessed, protected, and healed. Praying
to God as our loving Father, and follow
ing good and pure ways of living as
Jesus taught, will bring health, happi
ness, and freedom.
When we learn to see ourselves and
others as forever the beloved children of
God, we can no longer fear witchcraft or
evil spirits.
Christian Science is a way of living ac
cording to the way Jesus taught. Pray
ing to the one true God and studying the
Bible and Science and Health helps us to
learn and practice this Science better.
Our lives become happier, healthier, and
more successful. There is no need to
consult a "witch doctor" or diviner to
find out what is wrong with us. There is

thinking reveals His laws of good.
