Music In The Park July 18 “Harold
Benjamin & The Country Boys”
The Addison Summer Series “Music in the Park”
held on stage at Valerio Parkway, Downtown Addison,
NY. This coming Friday July 18, starting at 6:30PM will
feature “Harold Benjamin and the Country Boys.
It is my understanding that Harold has been playing
music for over 45 years throughout the Addison and
surrounding communities. His band plays country, even
polkas and older rock & roll.
Come out this Friday night, bring your lawn chairs,
plan on eating Middle Town Historical Society hot dogs
& desserts as well as Armstrong Phone Company providing FREE popcorn.
Coming July 25 will be Woodhull Community Band
led by Director Kathy Knowles. Watch future publications for more updated scheduling for the Park. If there
are any merchants, groups, organizations or individuals
who would like to sponsor a “night” in the park, contact

continue this great activity throughout the summer!
AVFD Pancake Breakfast
Please join us on Sunday, July 13th for an all you
can eat buffet style pancake breakfast. Serving from
7:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. All profits help offset daily
expenses of running the Department. Any donations
received are added to the “building fund” to help offset
maintenance of the building and grounds. We hope
to see you at our monthly breakfasts.
Soccer Skills & Conditioning
Addison girls entering grades 7-12 interested in indoor
soccer, outdoor soccer skills and conditioning should
meet behind the high school Sunday, July 13 ( 5:308 p.m.). Players must be N.Y. West insured. Winter
indoor soccer players and 6th grade youth league
players already have insurance.
Individuals needing N.Y. West insurance (7 dollars)
should contact Kim Driskell for information.
Players should bring spikes, sneakers, guards and

CRAVINGS IS COMING
COFFEE, ICE CREAM & FROZEN YOGURT
Construction is beginning on Cravings Coffee, Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt on Front St in Addison.
Cravings will offer 12 flavors of self-serve frozen yogurt accompanied by 60 toppings, Cravings will
have hard and soft ice cream year round, seating inside or out, you can be served one of three ways,
walk up windows, inside counter, or from the drive thru. The drive thru will be for coffee sales only.
There will certainly be a coffee house atmosphere in the coffee café, where you can sit and enjoy your
latte or espresso by the fire place
or at a table with a friend. Cravings will have specialty coffee,
specialty drinks including teas and
exotic flavored coffee, the baristas
will be able to mix your fresh cup of
coffee or specialty espresso drink
while you wait. This is going to be
a place you can come and relax
and have a tasty treat, or snack.
You can grab a cup of coffee on
your way to work and treat yourself
to an awesome, healthy frozen
yogurt snack on your way home,
come back later with the family
and enjoy dessert.
Cravings is planning to be open
mid to late September, there will
be probably be 1 full time manager
and several part time positions available. There will be a job fair near the end of August for anyone

Addison Senior Citizen Meeting
The July Addison Senior Citizen meeting and buffet
is Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at noon at the American
Legion. Beverages will be provided. Please bring your
own table service and a dish to pass or if unable to
furnish, we’d appreciate a $3.00 donation.
This months birthday celebrants are: Gale Haines,
Shirley Louise Harris, Juanita Allen, Joyce Burgess,

The Addison Village Board Meeting will be held on Monday, July 14 at 7:00 PM at the Village Hall on Tuscarora

Woodhull Seniors Meeting
The Woodhull area seniors met July 1st, with 51
present. Pledge was led by Arnie Herrington and
invocation was led by Jerry Calkins. We had a delicious meal and Sharon Clark spoke about volunteers
needed to help at Faith & Action for the elderly. Mary
Hults won $34 in the50/50 and Sharon Brewer won
the door prize. Our visitors were Mike and Kathy
Rivers and Bea Hurd, from Pigeon Forge, TN. The
birthdays for July are Brenda Cline, Joni McMindes,
Jean Bratte, Pam Houghtaling, Shirley Harris, Wendell Thomas and Kevin Thomas. Anniversaries for
July are Warren and Brenda Cline, Mike and Kathy
Rivers and Fred and Beverly Conklin. The bus is full
for our trip to Lancaster on July 17th, please be at
the Woodhull School by 6:45.
Our next luncheon/meeting is August 5th at the
Woodhull Firemen’s Field at noon, for our summer
picnic. We will be doing a White Elephant Auction,
so please bring a gift wrapped up, along with your
table setting and your own drink and a dish to pass.
Also remember to bring your favorite recipe for our
cookbook that Jan and Kathy are making.
Elkland Area Senior Club
Thanks To Everyone
We (The Troupsburg Betterment Committee) would
like to thank everyone. First of all, like the Troupsburg
Firemen, The Amb. Corp. and the Ladies Aux. By the way,
that was a wonderful dinner. Ron Button for a wonderful
job (as always) as our speaker for the day. Thanks again
April Prutsman for an awesome job singing the National
Anthem. She has the most outstanding voice.
Thanks to everyone that had any part in making our
Heritage Day a wonderful success, along with everyone
who participated in the nice big parade.
Also to the “Young Explosives” for the wonderful program
of awesome fireworks. They always do such a wonderful
program each year. Plus, the more we make in donations,
the more we can have towards the fireworks each year.
Thanks again to everyone and we would like your feed
back on the new site this year for the fireworks, hope
everyone liked it.
Troupsburg Betterment Committee
The Elkland Area Senior Citizens Club held their luncheon meeting at the Elkland Fire Hall on July 3rd.
There were 40 members in attendance. Raymond
Doan led the group in prayer followed by the Pledge
of Allegiance to the Flag.
The club unanimously agreed to donate $400.00
to the Elkland Fire Co. for the use of the firehall for
the last two years. A thank you went out to Bill Hall
in his efforts to aquire the money from the Elkland
Borough. Dick Vargeson announced the “Elkland
Jubilee” will be Saturday, July 12th.
The Chinese Auction was held. Several larger items
were auctioned off including a historical throw picturing important areas in Tioga County. It went to Betty
Schuller. Peggy Chilson won the bid on a similar
throw picturing the 1876 Parkhurst St. School, The
1851 Elkland Tannery, the 1905 Elkland Fire Dept.
and Boro building and several other historical areas
of Elkland.
Voted the most patriotic attire was Olive Wood.
Honorable mention went to Peggy Wynkoop, Glenn
Hendrickson, Peggy Chilson and Marilyn Doan.
Birthdays for July are Christine Hendrickson, Waldo
Wood and Alyce Shay. Celebrating anniversaries are
Roger and Peggy Wynkoop, Bob and Betty Hazlett.
Winner of the door prize was Rose Ascenzi; the
50/50 - Roberta Hackett; the Osceola Big M Gift
Certificate - Carol Harkenrider.
The next luncheon meeting will be on August 7th
at the Elkland Fire Hall. New members always

The year was 1949 and in that year, John Mike O’Keefe and Rathbun “Bun” Stuart were
employees of the Addison Post Office. John O’Keefe was the Postmaster while Bun Stuart
was a rural mail carrier.
Both, however, in their youth had been outstanding athletes and baseball was their game
of choice. In 1949, they hatched a plan to bring Little League baseball to Addison. The league would be
comprised of kids 8-12 years old and sponsors were solicited for uniforms, equipment, etc. The high school
was asked to allow the use of their athletic fields for the Little League team to compete. Eventually, all the
pieces came together and the Addison Little League was founded and first began competition in 1950. The
first games were played on the site of what is now the tennis courts at the high school and later the games
were played behind the high school.
Initial sponsors and teams were The Addison Legion (Giants), Phoenix Hose Fire Company (Yankees),
Kiwanis (Cards), and the Wells Hose Fire Company (Cubs). Some of the first coaches for these teams were
John Grange, Walt Rice, Perry Wheaton Sr., and Chuck Wade.
In the early fifties, there were no malls, video games, I-phones and as a result the games were well attended. People came whether they had kids playing or not. Later on, in 1961, it was decided that Addison
Little League baseball needed its own home and a diamond was built and fenced with dugouts on its’ current site largely through the efforts of volunteers and donations from local merchants. Wade’s Coal and
Concrete donated the concrete, and Zeke Dininny donated the land upon which the current games are
played. Volunteers mowed and raked the baseball diamonds and still do. It should be noted that Zeke also
sponsored men’s softball teams for years and coached in Little League himself.
Thousands of Addison youths have participated in Little League since its inception in 1950. The important
thing to remember is that the founding of the Addison Little League was truly a community team effort and
it was driven by the dreams of two men, John Mike O’Keefe and Bun Stuart, for whom the baseball field is
dedicated to and named after.

simple things, like roasting a marshmallow or
jumping into the lake,” says a Fresh Air host mom.
The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit
agency, has provided free summer experiences to
more than 1.8 million New York City children from
low-income communities since 1877. Fresh Air
children are boys and girls, from six to 18 years
old, who live in New York City. Children on first-time
visits are six to 12 years old and stay for one or two
weeks. Children who are reinvited by host families
may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age
18 and can enjoy extended trips. Over 65 percent
of all children are reinvited to stay with their host
families, year after year.

Elmira Downtown Announces NEW DATE for the 7th Annual
Elmira Street Painting Festival on July 19th & 20th

The 7th Annual Elmira Street Painting Festival presented by Seneca Beverage Corporation is an
art-filled, family fun weekend celebrating creativity! Stroll through our historic downtown while art
takes place on the ground- and all around. Quickly becoming a weekend tradition where families
and friends can enjoy the creative spirit together. Join all the artists, musicians, and lovers of the
arts, young and old, who gather in downtown Elmira on West Water Street and North Main Street for
this celebration of the arts, centering around the Street Painting Festival, fashioned after the Italian
street painters “I Madonnari”, a street chalk art form dating back to the 16th century, as well as activities and entertainment for everyone. Street painting squares sponsored by businesses, families,
and individuals are used as a canvas for inspirations in chalk. In addition, come witness our future
street painters, over 40 “Chalk it Up” students take to the street with chalk in hand and create their
own fabulous masterpieces.
This two-day celebration of ART came to life in July of 2008. With the positive transformation of
downtown Elmira, the goal of the organization was to have our local residents and visitors rediscover
our city and bring awareness to our locally owned restaurants, stores, and other businesses.
Within this event, local and regional artists used the pavement as canvas to transform downtown
Elmira streets. The Streets literally become a gallery of ART. Our Artists come together to display
their diverse talents on the asphalt – using only chalk – in styles that range from Renaissance classicism to Cubism, Pop Art or their own creative style. These concrete masterpieces are left on the
sidewalk for the public to enjoy until the rains come down.
In addition to the street art, musical entertainment adds to the creative setting. And of course, don’t
forget to stroll through the Elmira Street Painting Festival Arts and Craft Show in the Mark Twain
Riverfront Park to discover our local artist and their amazing talent.

Connie Lorraine Dean
Connie Lorraine Dean, age 65, of Addison, NY, passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2014 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Connie was born on August 22, 1948 in Rathbone, NY, the daughter of the late Faye and Florence “Skip”
(Aldrige) Gardner. Connie married Wayne P. Dean, Sr. in Florida in 1987.
Connie worked for Corning, Inc. as a forming operator, retiring in 1993.
In her free time, she enjoyed gardening and weeding her flower beds, and
crocheting. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her loving husband of 27 years: Wayne P. Dean, Sr. of
Addison; children: Teresa M. Torres of Addison, Lisa N. Childs of Addison,
Wayne P. Dean, Jr. of Addison, Dominic J. Siciliano of West Palm Beach,
FL, and Christena M. Wilson of Lindley, NY; grandchildren: Christopher P.
Snow, Zachary J. Dean, Nicholas R. Dart, Hunter J. Childs, Joy Annie Torres,
Nina Marie Burdick, Lena N. Burdick; step-children: Gina Sanders of West
Palm Beach, FL, and Joseph A. Siciliano of West Palm Beach, FL; sisters:
Joan Maine of Elkland, PA, and Janine Stauffer of Painted Post, NY; and
several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Connie was predeceased by two brothers, James
Gardner and Burt Gardner, and uncle, Charles “Bucky” English.

Are You Trying Too Hard?
In little league baseball, when a young player is at bat, the coach may tell him, “Don’t try to kill the ball; just meet it.” When
you swing as hard as you can, you lose control and you may just strike out. Sometimes in our daily lives we may strike out.
Perhaps we’re trying too hard to please someone, or to succeed at something.
In many instances trusting in God, and being yourself, may be all that is needed to be respected and successful. God
doesn’t want us to be lazy, and He does expect us to do our best; but accepting our potential, and not jeopardizing our moral
standards are important.
In life, everyone occasionally strikes out, but learning from our mistakes and not dwelling on them, makes one a better person.
Remember the Lord in everything you do, and He will show you the right way.
