FROM THE RABBI — Rabbi Jeff Portman
The course that our past president, Lauren Reece Flaum (Z”L) helped us chart is now finally being pursued. We
are out of our home of 61 years – our shul which served us and previous generations so well. Our Shabbat
services are in one place (Hillel, our school is in two places (Willowwind on Sundays and Zion Lutheran Church
on Mondays and Wednesdays), our offices are at Terry, Lockridge and Dunn on Mormon Trek, our Gift Shop is
at Joanne Margolin’s home and all our furniture, books etc. are safely ensconced at Hawkeye Food Systems. At
some point in a few months everything will be under one roof. It has been so long since all of the Sunday School
has been under one roof. For several years our school has either been in two places (the shul and Hillel) or at
Willowwind. It will be wonderful when the Agudas Achim Religious School is actually at Agudas Achim.
There are certainly going to be some gaps in the synagogue’s schedule in this interim time. We think everything
is covered but something is bound to come up and we will have to punt. Be patient. The progress on our new
building, while starting slowly, should be picking up soon.
In just a few short weeks we will be entering the month of Elul. With the arrival of Elul we know that the High
Holidays will soon be upon us. According to the Bible Moses spent 40 days in heaven before receiving the second
tablets. The midrash states that these forty days started on the first of Elul and ended on Yom Kippur. There are
several customs for Elul including blowing the shofar each morning following the morning services. For each of
us this time allows for personal introspection, taking account of our past actions and trying to start our record, so
to speak, with a fresh slate.
To tie this in to our new building – our shul, indeed any shul’s success , is a reflection of the people. Although the
synagogue is the central institution of the Jewish people, the building itself is a shell for the activities of Jews.
May our collective Elul experiences help us as a community to come together in our new space as a holy
community.
FROM THE PRESIDENT — Teresa Weiner
And now we wander a bit... but not for forty years!
This Iowa tribe has pulled together in a monumental collective effort to make our next home a better gathering
place. Our Torahs and their Ark and Ner Tamid, our siddurim, and our memorial plaques will be ensconced in a
lovely modest space more accommodating to the diverse desires of our congregation. We will have enough room
for all our Religious School classes. Our kitchen will be multiuser-friendly, and our social hall will have elbow
room. All this plus accessibility and a paved parking lot!
Many individual acts of selfless generosity of money, time, and intellect have led to this day... building campaign
pledges, committee meetings, box packers and haulers, storage and office space donations, and on and on. I have
been awed and moved by this generosity as well as the spirit of unity and optimism among us. A grateful
president thanks you all.
It's an especially exciting time to be a member of Agudas Achim- spread the word!
BUILDING COMMITTEE UPDATE—Vickie Ginsberg
The building committee continues to:
1) Help to coordinate with the contractor those items we intend to relocate from the existing building. With
short notice to vacate, these things are being done as quickly as possible.
2) Identify and select furnishings required for the new building.
We anticipate the construction to begin in the first week of August or shortly there after. We are all
anxious! We will keep you posted as we know that exact date!!
SISTERHOOD NEWS— Beverly Jones
Mitzvah Fund Brunch
The Sisterhood Mitzvah Fund Brunch on June 10 was well attended, and was successful in raising just under
$1000.00 to benefit the Joan Buxton School Chldren's Aid Fund and the Forever People Fund for
Ethiopian-Israeli Children. Thank you to our keynote speaker, Professor Linda Kerber who was very
engaging, and to Mandy Schey and Susan Assouline who spoke about the Mitzvah Fund charities. Many thanks
to everyone else who helped make this event a success - Sandy Denburg, Mindy Russell, Ellen Caplan, Karen
Lipman, Beverly Jones, Jorie Slodki, and Nina Weinstein and Rachel Korach Howell.
Book Club
The Book Group will not be meeting in August. The next meeting is scheduled for September. The Book Group
usually meets on the second Wednesday of the month at Bruegger's Bagels on Riverside Drive. For information
about the Book Group, please contact Esther Retish at [email protected] or 351-5011
Gift Shop
The Gift Shop is packed away until its grand re-opening in the new Synagogue, but if you need any Judaica
between now and then, please contact Joanne Margolin at [email protected] or 351-2181. Joanne will help
you find anything that you need.
Dues
It's time to talk about Sisterhood dues for 2012-13. Dues are now $36.00 for the year. There is a check-off for
Sisterhood dues on the Synagogue's Fair Share Dues form that was recently mailed out. We hope that you'll
consider supporting Sisterhood through this check-off.
Upcoming Events
We'll be getting information out to you in the coming weeks about Sisterhood's annual Fall Membership
Meeting.
The Rosh HaShanah edition of the Sisterhood Cooking Club will be meeting on Sunday, Sept. 9 at Hillel. Details,
including the menu that we'll be preparing, will be sent out soon. Jorie Slodki will again be leading the cooking
demonstrations.
ADULT EDUCATION — Kathy Jacobs
As we begin our new fiscal year in transition from the Washington Street location, temporarily holding services
at Hillel House until our new site is ready for occupation, we are beginning to plan adult education programming.
Our committee will coordinate Friday evening programs with Jori Slodki who plans the educational
programming at Hillel. One topic we are planning with Jori is a series about Yiddish Culture. As always, we want
to hear from you about programs you would enjoy. If you have an idea, or a request for programming on a specific
topic, please email me at [email protected].
LIFE MILESTONES
The Congregation extends its condolences to Michael, Georgia and Chester Flaum on the loss of their wife and
mother, Lauren Reece Flaum. May her memory be a blessing.

Mazel Tov to Janie and Jody Braverman on the marriage of her daughter and his step daughter Rachel Gomez to
Scott Hoban.
Our condolences to Mace and Kay Braverman, Dick and Phyllis Braverman, and Jody and Janie Braverman on
the death of their brother in law David McCuskey, husband of their sister Eloise.
RELIGIOUS SCHOOL —Kineret Zabner
Shalom. I hope everyone is having a great summer. Here is some information about the Religious School. Hebrew
School is going to meet Mondays and Wednesdays 4 to 6 at Zion Lutheran Church, 310 North Johnson St, Iowa
City. We start on September 10. Every second grader is invited to start Hebrew School, please contact me if you
need more information, my phone number is 319 3210929, my email [email protected]. Sunday School is
going to meet at Willowind. We start on September 9. Please mail or email registration forms as soon as possible
to the synagogue's office. We will have a 3 year old class, this class meets before each holiday and the kids come
with one or both parents. It is a great introduction for parents and kids to our school. Please call or email me if
you have any question, I know this is confusing, we are almost there with our new, wonderful place. Shalom.
Kineret
GIFT SHOP—Joanne Margolin
I am keeping the shabbat candles, the memorial candles, and havdalah candles at my house. If you know you’re
going to need them, please call far enough in advance to make sure they are available for pick up.
If you have any gift shop questions, please call me. You can reach me at 351-2181 or try me on my cell 331-5350.
My email is [email protected].
ONEGS— Andrew Frank
We have several open Friday nights for volunteers to host onegs in August and September. Services will be at
Hillel. Please email [email protected] to arrange an oneg date.
Thanks so much.
WARM UP AMERICA—Connie Berman
The August schedule for WUA is not quite set, but the plan is to meet on August 19 at the usual time.
Unfortunately, Hillel is not really an option, so I think it'll be at Connie's house again -- 1415 Cedar Street.
If you need help getting in, we can manage with a wheel chair to have only three steps.
Please contact [email protected] for updates
KOL SHIRA
Kol Shira will be performing at the Iowa City Farmers’ Market this Wednesday August 1 from 5-7 pm.
Sheloshim for Lauren Reece Flaum
Saturday, August 4th at 4 pm at the home of Michael Flaum.
Except for a parent the formal mourning period ends
thirty (sheloshim) days after burial.
There will be a short Shabbat afternoon service.
