DEER SEASON XP
Deer Season XP
Deer hunters are king among North American big game,
and in 2015, Winchester introduces a new load that will
have legions of sportsmen and women across the country

With the new Extreme Point bullet
design, Winchester’s Deer Season XP
promises to change the game next fall.
W I NC H E ST E R TH E AM ER I CAN LEG EN D
here’s no doubt about it,
we’re experiencing the
Golden Age of deer hunting, with more deer in the
woods—an estimated 30
million—than at any point
in history. During deer season, 83 percent of all
hunters, some 10 million people, chase trophy
whitetails and mule deer. In states with rich
deer-hunting traditions such as Pennsylvania
and Wisconsin, the opening day of deer season
is practically a holiday, with schools canceling
classes so kids can get into the woods with their
families. It’s safe to say, American hunters are
passionate about deer season.
Despite their impressive numbers and
an entire industry dedicated to them, deer
hunters have long been underserved in the
ammunition aisle. While there are great, general-purpose big-game bullets available that
are more than capable of taking down a trophy
buck—bullets like the Winchester PowerPoint and Ballistic Silvertip® deer hunters
have relied on for years—there have been few,
if any, offerings designed specifically to tackle
thin-skinned white-tailed deer. For 2015,
Winchester looks to change that with their
newest, innovative big-game cartridge—Deer
Season XP ammunition.
Deer Season XP is not an
old bullet in flashy new
packaging, but a completely
different design that’s built
to drop deer where they
stand, which is what deer
hunters want.
Made for Deer Hunters
“Deer hunters are the largest group of hunters
out there,” says Mike Stock, centerfire product manager for Winchester. “A vast majority
of them use a product that was originally
designed and built to hunt a wide range of
critters, with deer being the thinnest skinned.
A product like Power-Point does a fantastic
job, but we really wanted to, for the first time,
build a bullet specifically for the deer hunter.”
It’s that technology that really sets
Winchester Deer Season XP apart from other
big-game bullets on the shelves. Deer Season
XP is not an old bullet in flashy new packaging, but a completely different design that’s
built to drop deer where they stand, which is
what deer hunters want.

The diameter of a bullet at impact is
what initiates expansion. The larger
the diameter, the more rapidly the bullet
expands, allowing a higher transfer of
energy and a larger wound channel.
“Hunters tell us over and over again that
they’re tired of following blood trails,” says
Stock. “For years they’ve been using bullets
that are truly overbuilt for deer and lack real
rapid knockdown power. The new Extreme
Point bullet in Deer Season XP is built
specifically for deer. It efficiently dumps all
its energy in small to large sized whitetails.”
In coming up with the new design for
Deer Season XP, the Winchester design

FEATURES
team considered what cartridges are most effective for deer. Through their research, they
kept coming back to the .30-30, a venerable
round that’s responsible for more deer tagged
than any other caliber. Why, asked Stock,
was it so good at dropping big, deep-woods
deer in their tracks? They determined it was
because of the big bullet’s wide meplat, or
large, flat frontal diameter, that impacts deer
like a sledgehammer.
“So we set out to build a bullet profile that
provided the style performance found in all
popular deer calibers. In short, we ended up
with something that looks like a .30-30 bullet,
but with a plastic tip for a higher ballistic coefficient,” says Stock. “Deer Season XP is all
about the design of the Extreme Point bullet
featuring a large impact diameter where the
polymer tip and jacket meet, resulting in more
rapid expansion and serious knockdown power.”
11
Maximum Knockdown
Winchester calls this technology Maximum
Impact Diameter and the science behind
it makes sense. The diameter of a bullet at
impact is what initiates expansion. The larger
the diameter, the more rapidly the bullet
expands, allowing a higher transfer of energy
at terminal velocities and a larger wound
channel, especially in that first five or six
inches where the rapid expansion causes the
most trauma. Balancing that expansion with
penetration is the trick and the Extreme Point
bullet manages it well, dumping nearly all its
energy in the animal while still penetrating 15
to 18 inches to the offside of the animal.
“We’ve done plenty of testing in the lab,
including recording high-speed footage
shooting Deer Season XP into ballistic gelatin
to ensure it opens up quick for more shock and
trauma,” says Stock. “But the proof is in the
pudding. On deer hunts we’ve done during
the development phase, the bullet worked as
designed. It knocks deer down. We’ve yet to
have a deer run very far after being hit with
Deer Season XP.”
Let’s face it, while there are a lot more of
them, deer biology hasn’t changed. What has
evolved, however, is the way we hunt deer and
the technology we have available to do so. One
hundred years ago, carrying a factory rifle with
peep sights in thick woods, the deer hunter
couldn’t make a 400-yard shot. Hunters today
have the most accurate rifles ever built topped
with the best optics available. They need a bullet with a high ballistic coefficient that can hit
the vitals of a deer at 300 yards or more across
a bean field or an open hillside.
Deer Season XP’s terminal performance
is unlike anything deer hunters have had
available to them, but it’s all for naught if
accuracy isn’t factored into the design. With a

long history of building accurate ammunition
for all hunters, this is where Winchester

Deer Season XP™ performed in all of them as
well. To that end, they wrapped the lead core
in a drawn brass jacket that’s slightly thinner,
however, with a contoured wall thickness that
leads to greater accuracy in the widest range of
rifles on the market. Winchester is also offering Deer Season XP in a single bullet weight
for each of the eight popular deer cartridges
in the line.
“We’ve selected the optimum weight for
a deer hunting bullet in each caliber,” says
Stock. “It simplifies the purchasing decision,
but we’ve also found it’s the right construction
for the bullet’s performance. It doesn’t waste
extra bullet weight the hunter doesn’t need.”
With these kind of features, hunters
might be expecting a price that matches the
performance, but part of Winchester’s mission
in building Deer Season XP was to offer the
most bullet technology it could at an extremely
competitive price.
“For the first time, deer hunters used to
paying around twenty dollars for a box of
ammo can now purchase a polymer-tipped,
fine-profile bullet with significantly improved
ballistic coefficients approaching those found
in our top-shelf products,” says Stock.
Pleasing 10 million die-hard hunters is
an impossible task, but with a commitment
to deer hunters as seen in a variety of avenues
such as its World of Whitetail television show
and Web portal, Winchester is well-suited
to the job. The legendary ammunition
manufacturer also has a recent history of
serving individual consumer groups with
innovative new ammunition introductions
designed for specific end use. According
to Stock, Winchester’s new Deer Season
XP joins Razor Boar XT and Varmint
X as an easy-to-grasp, go-to choice for
game-specific hunters in an ever-confusing
ammo aisle.

The NEW Winchester XPR™
Winchester has long had a reputation
for building rifles that were accurate,
reliable and handsome, legendary
examples of the gunmaker’s art that
have been passed down through
generations with simple, iconic names
like the 1873 and, the rifleman’s rifle,
the Model 70®. With the introduction
of their newest rifle—the XPR—
Winchester continues that tradition
of building accurate, reliable rifles,
though in a very different package.
The first thing that grabs your
attention is the XPR’s black stock,
something rare in the world of
Winchester. Modern in appearance
and fit, the bolt-action is built with an
advanced polymer with textured grip
and forend to provide positive traction
in all conditions and environments. The
polymer also withstands temperature
extremes and, when combined with
the unique flat bedding pads and
cross-mounted recoil lug, maintains
the rifle’s accuracy and performance
in any weather. At the rear, an Inflex
recoil pad is designed to minimize felt
recoil by directing the butt down and
away from the shooter.
The real advancements in
technology over previous Winchester
rifles are in the XPR’s guts. Like the
rest of the rifle, the receiver and bolt
take advantage of modern materials
and manufacturing processes.
Precision machined from a solid bar
of thorough-hardened chromoly steel,
both are incredibly tough and built to
resist wear and torque, even under
heavy use. The bolt is of full diameter
for extreme rigidity, and is designed
with three locking lugs and a shortened
60-degree throw. This allows for
faster cycling without interfering with
larger ocular diameters found on many
modern scopes. The bolt has also been
treated with nickel Teflon for smooth
operation and maximum resistance to
the elements.
In another nod to modern rifle
making, Winchester fitted the
receiver with a button-rifled chromoly
steel barrel using a barrel nut. This
connection not only helps the XPR
come in at a friendly price point,
but has the added benefit of aiding
accuracy by keeping the receiver and
barrel in precise alignment with the

optimal amount
of headspacing
between the bolt face
and bore for each chambering.
In designing the XPR, Winchester
didn’t completely abandon all of its
proven technology. Most notably for a
rifle with a suggested retail of $549,
the company fitted the XPR with an
M.O.A. fire control system. This allsteel adjustable trigger group features
2:1 mechanics, meaning the trigger
itself travels half the distance of the
actuator, resulting in an enhanced
trigger feel that greatly reduces felt
creep and overtravel. The design also
incorporates a coil spring that reduces
initial trigger take-up for a smoother,
more tactical trigger pull.
The XPR looks like no rifle Winchester has ever offered. Thanks to
nearly 150 years of experience combined with modern materials and manufacturing, there shouldn’t be any worry
it will live up to the company’s legendary
performance. Winchester has built a
longstanding reputation on its fine firearms and, though it’s not made of wood,
the XPR continues that tradition.
The all-steel trigger group is adjustable
and utilizes a coil spring that reduces initial
trigger take-up for a much smoother pull than
standard triggers.
The XPR’s black stock is made of an advanced
polymer and boasts a textured grip and forend
for a sure feel in all conditions.
The receiver and bolt are precision machined
from a solid bar of chromoly steel to better
resist wear and torque.

With its ballistically complementing practice and self-defense loads, Winchester not only eliminates confusion

ew decisions are as important as selecting
personal-defense ammunition; you are,
quite literally, staking your (or your
family’s) well-being on the load selected.
Problem is, there is currently a plethora
of seemingly suitable options from almost
countless manufacturers in the marketplace.
Under such circumstances, making the “correct”
choice can pose a real challenge—particularly
for a novice. Fortunately, Winchester W Train

simplifies the task and, in the process, offers
personal-protection practitioners something
that other companies simply don’t.

Connecting the Dots
Practicing with one’s defensive handgun
should be commonplace; if, for no other
reason, doing so provides an opportunity to
confirm reliable functioning of a firearm that
could be pressed into service at a moment’s
notice. Ideally, the armed citizen will frequently spend time at the range breaking in
a new handgun, improving accuracy and furthering familiarity with the firearm. Given
the current pricing of most defensive-specific
ammunition, though, it’s unlikely that many
who carry actually practice with the same
load they plan to use when carrying because

it’s simply too cost prohibitive. Instead,
most people purchase economical, full-metal-jacket loads, which are suitable for recreation but unlikely to duplicate the profile
(for confirmed feeding) and performance of
their chosen defensive ammunition. This is
where Winchester Ammunition connected
the dots.
The hallmark of the W Train & Defend®
line is ballistically matched practice and personal-protection loads that also offer less perceived recoil. Sold in 50-count boxes distinguished by a large “T” (i.e. Train), the practice
ammunition features full-metal-jacket bullets
with wide meplats, lead-free primers and brass
cases; nickel-plated cases are unnecessary for
practice. To reduce recoil, and thereby make
practice more pleasurable, velocities were kept
in the 900- to 950-fps range.
The “D” loads match the ballistic performance of the training loads, but with a
defensively more effective hollow-point
bullet with a bonded lead-alloy core.

perform best at the velocities we were working with and met our recoil reduction goals
as well.” This will make shooting compact
and sub-compact carry-sized handguns
much more manageable.
The hollow-point “Defender®” bullets,
formerly known as PDX1® Defender, feature a lead-alloy core that is bonded to the
patented, skived reverse-taper jacket, thereby
resulting in near 100-percent weight retention
and six expanded segments that flare outward
to increase the projectiles 1.65- to 1.75-times
their original diameters.
“The differences [between Defender and
W Defend] are very minor to non-existent in
all calibers,” says Stock. “We’ve noted from
very early on in the creation and development
of Defender bullet technology that they
have always been incredibly consistent even
at slower speeds due to the reverse-jacket
technology. This allowed us to move the bullet
velocities downward without having to tweak
the bullet much at all.”
When introduced, PDX1 Defender
(as it’s known in its civilian guise)
performed admirably in all phases of the
“FBI protocol” testing. Because the projectiles
are virtually unchanged, it makes sense then
that Defender would excel, too, with regard
to terminal performance.
As with the “Train” loads, 20-count
“Defend” ammunition boxes have “D” to
denote the load’s intended use. Unlike the “T”
ammunition, though, “D” loads have nickelplated cases for enhanced corrosion-resistance,

which is a real concern if a handgun is carried
in high-perspiration areas of the body (i.e. the
small of back or pocket) or in humid parts of
the country, including the East and Northwest,
among others. Rotating carry loads regularly
will ensure the freshest loads are always on
tap. Nickel-plated cases are also easier to see in
low-light conditions and are distinguishable
from their “T” counterparts. Unlike the
“T” loads, though, “D” ammunition doesn’t
feature lead-free primers since lead dispersion
from high-volume shooting, often in indoor
ranges where air circulation may be a concern,
isn’t an issue.
Testing W T&D
To evaluate W T&D, I headed to the range
with a Ruger LCP (.380 Auto), a SCCY
Industries CPX-2 (9mm Luger) and a Smith
& Wesson M&P40 (.40 S&W). First, I wanted to verify a similar point of impact between
the practice (“T”) and personal-protection
(“D”) loads, so with each pistol I fired five “T”
rounds followed immediately by five “D” cartridges. Target distance varied depending on
the chambering and sight configuration (see
Range Results chart).
•From a sandbag rest at 10 yards, and despite
its rudimentary sights, the .380 LCP delivered a 10-shot 37⁄16-inch group. Excluding
a single flyer, the “T” group measured 25⁄8
inches. The “D” .380 loads delivered a 1½inch group.
•From the 9mm SCCY CPX-2 at 15 yards,
the two available “W” loads produced a 4¼inch group; one shot greatly increased what
would have been a 3-inch cluster. That same
gun scored a 19⁄16-inch cluster of the 9mm
“D” loads.
•At 25 yards, the M&P40 produced a 35⁄8 inch group with the training loads, while
W I NC H E ST E R TH E AM ER I CAN LEG EN D
the defensive rounds generated an impressive 111⁄16-inch group at 25 yards. The grouping was no doubt aided by the Crimson
Trace lasergrip.
In all three pistols, the “T” and “D” loads
had no variance in point of impact—exactly as
the matched loads are designed to do.
Next, using an Oehler Model 36 chronograph, I confirmed the velocities of the same
offerings.
•Factory-published numbers have the two
.380 Auto loads attaining 950 fps at the
muzzle, and testing revealed that from the
LCP’s short 2¾-inch barrel, the “T” load
averaged 865 fps, while its “D” counterpart
achieved 896 fps.
• From the 9mm SCCY’s 31⁄8 -inch barrel,
the “T” offering hit 848 fps and its defensive complement attained 869 fps, which
due to the short barrel was just below the
published 950-fps velocity for each.
• Lastly, from the M&P40’s 4-inch barrel,
the “T” and “D” rounds reached 923 and
937 fps, respectively. The former nearly
matches the touted 925-fps velocity, while
the latter exceeds it by just a tick.
Similar velocities are important to pointof-impact consistency between “T” and “D”
loads, and it’s apparent that Winchester
achieves this. Additionally, these reduced
velocities (in comparison to Winchester
Defender offerings; see sidebar) achieved less
perceived recoil. In fact, W T&D made the
SCCY CPX-2 and M&P40 pistols pleasurable to shoot. Conversely, although the W
T&D load produced noticeably less recoil in
the Ruger LCP than its Defender counterpart, given its light weight and dimensions,
it can be a challenge to shoot accurately for
extended periods of time. Any reduction in
recoil is appreciated.
The author’s test results, showing no variance in
point of impact between the “T” loads (right) and
the “D” loads (left).

45 Auto ... A Big New Offering
In its first 12 months in the marketplace,
Winchester W T&D ammunition was available in .380 Auto, 9mm Luger, .38 Special
and .40 S&W. Strangely absent was .45 Auto,
particularly given the increasing assortment
of popular new compact and sub-compact
handguns in this chambering, such as the
Springfield Armory XDS. But good news is
coming for .45 fans. According to Stock, “We
are adding a .45-caliber offering to the line
in 2015. The matched W Train & Defend®

offering will feature 230-grain bullets at 850
fps.” As for pricing, currently available W T&D
ammunition retails for $16 to $23 per box and
the .45 Auto should follow suit.
Winchester W Train & Defend is more

at the local gun club, America’s
favorite target load has been
a leading part of the action.
Happy 50th Anniversary AA!
It’s hard to believe that 2015 marks five
decades of the AA® shotshell. The AA took
flight from the Winchester engineering labs in
1965. Winchester set out to design a shotshell
for target shooting that was far superior than
any other. Introduce the plastic hull, which
was reloadable, the plastic wad and hard shot.
Winchester AA shotshells offered consistent
performance and took over as the industry
leader in target loads. At the time, it was
dubbed the “ultimate target load,” and it still
is today. Be it straight out of the box shooting

or reloading, AA is undeniably the target load
the majority of Americans go to when they are
seeking the most dependable shotshell in the
industry today.
An Early Engineering Marvel
Technology took its time with the Winchester
Mark 5 actually serving as the stepping-stone
to the AA shotshell. The Mark 5 had an inner
liner that protected shot during in-bore acceleration, as well as an integral filler-wad that
cushioned the shot (reducing set-back effects)
to reduce shot deformation resulting in tighter, more uniform patterns. A nice byproduct
of the design was the shooter also faced (or
shouldered) less recoil, too. Ultimately, the
engineering refinements of the Mark 5 offered
the shooter improved on-target performance
because it placed more pellets into a 30-inch
circle at 40 yards with more uniform dispersion than any other shell of its day.
Then in 1964, Winchester introduced the
compression-formed plastic hull. This was
arguably the most substantial advancement in
shotshell construction of its time. The plastic
hull was stronger than paper, more durable
and dramatically increased the ability to

consistently, and more frequently, reload over
paper hulls. To this day, a spent AA lying
unattended on a trap line is a rarity. While
12-gauge and 20-gauge shells are most desirable to a reloader, spent 28s and .410s are
coveted like gold as well. When Winchester
introduced the AA in 1965, it combined all
the great characteristics of the Mark 5 with
some additional modern enhancements and
quickly became the ultimate target load.
AA Today
On to AA TrAAcker®, the most recent addition to the AA line of shells and considered
one of the most innovative products in the
shooting sports ever developed. It boasts the
same great wad feature as its granddad the
AA, but offers an exclusive “shot-tracking
system” that enables the shooter to see the
trajectory of the wad. Orange wads track
best in low light and dark backgrounds
while black wads are better suited for open
sky and brightly lit conditions. Both travel
downrange and track with the shot string to
indicate where a miss is, and also witness the
path of the shot pattern to the target when a
direct hit takes place. Notably, the TrAAcker
produces the same velocity and shot weight
as a standard AA load, which ensures that
lead and recoil will be the same as an AA,
be it when practicing with friends or competing on the line. Practice makes perfect
and Winchester’s AA TrAAcker is built
for the job.
Fifty years young and the AA has
never looked and never shot better. No
wonder it’s America’s favorite target and
training load. With 27 different configurations to choose from—and more on the
way—in all gauges and shot sizes, the AA
will continue to hold its status as the “ultimate target load” for today and tomorrow’s
shooters. In fact, look for the AA this year
in a new Steel Sporting Clays load. Cheers
to the next 50 years, AA!

Bullets for
America’s
Biggest Game
Looking for the perfect bullets to take down the continent’s
toughest critters? Look no further than Winchester’s
Accubond CT or Power Max Bonded loads. By Jeff Johnston
top-end Yukon moose hunt can run
$20,000. Tack on a couple grand for
airfare and maybe another for taxidermy, and as anyone can see, moose hunting
isn’t for the light-of-pocket. This 1,400-pound
beast is also not for the light-of-bullet.
Few things on a hunt, other than a scope
malfunction or a rifle jam, can lead to greater
disappointment than bullet failure. Imagine
saving your money, hunting hard and delivering a bullet to a trophy animal’s shoulder only
to watch it lumber off into the bush, never to
be recovered. You drew blood; your hunt is
over. It can happen with elk, caribou or any
large game animal when the range or shot
angle is less than ideal. So before venturing on
your hunt of a lifetime, invest in the cheapest
insurance policy possible—top quality ammo.
The following are two Winchester bullets that
will not fail on America’s biggest game.
AccuBond CT for Moose and Elk
There are only a few animals on earth that rival the muscular bulk of a bull moose. Choose
a magnum cartridge of .30 caliber or greater,
such as .300 Win. Mag., .300 WSM, .325
WSM or .338 Win. Mag. and then, just as
importantly, select a bullet that can handle
W I NC H E ST E R TH E AM ER I CAN LEG EN D
that cartridge’s magnum velocity. On moose,
the primary reasons for bullet failure are bone
deflection and fragmentation, both of which
result in a lack of penetration. An ultra-tough
bullet that will drive through bone while
holding together for maximum weight retention is paramount.
Likewise, a mature bull elk can stand more
than 5 feet tall at the shoulder and stretch up
to 8 feet from nose to tail. For big, heavy game
like moose and elk, choose the Winchester
black box ammo loaded with the AccuBond
CT bullet.
Found in Winchester’s top-end line of
ammo, the AccuBond CT bullet is a premium projectile made from the combined
technologies (hence the CT) of Nosler and
Winchester. It features a full-length lead
core that’s molecularly bonded to a precisely
tapered copper jacket. The bond is what lends
this bullet its toughness.
Consider this: At 200 yards, after a
180-grain, .300 Win. Mag. bullet slows to
2,590 fps, nearly any bullet of adequate manufacture will hold together when it strikes
an animal. But let’s say your guide calls in a
moose, and it charges through the alders and
stops 20 yards to your left. You pull up and fire

animal in North America,
moose demands a tough
bullet like AccuBond CT.

close range and near muzzle velocities.

ACCUBOND CT // POWER MAX BONDED
that same .300 Win. Mag. almost
instinctively, striking the moose on
the point of its giant shoulder. It
runs off dripping blood, but guess
what? If you were using a sub-quality bullet or a bullet not intended for
heavy game at high velocity, there’s
a chance it failed. It broke into
many tiny fragments upon striking
bone at 3,000 fps, and none of those
fragments penetrated the thoracic
cavity, which harbors the animal’s
vitals. I’ve seen this happen before,
but never with a high-end bonded
bullet like the AccuBond CT.
But if all you needed in a bullet
was durability or penetration, you
could use a solid. The AccuBond’s
advantage is that it also expands
for swift killing performance. It
accomplishes this via its copper
jacket that’s engineered to give
way at diminishing impact velocities, thereby controlling the
bullet’s classical mushroom-style
expansion across the entire velocity

some hunters take pride in shooting one bullet
for most of their big-game hunting needs. In
this case, the Winchester Power Max Bonded
bullet is all the bullet most hunters need for
sheep, black bear, caribou and animals up to
the size of elk.
A tapered copper jacket is bonded to a
solid lead core as insurance against separation at high impact velocities, while its
protected hollow-point design allows swift
expansion, even at low impact velocities.
The tapered jacket thickens at the ogive to
protect against over-expansion and weight
loss. This affordable bullet may be the best
available for the money and is plenty tough
for caribou-sized game.
According to the Winchester Ballistic
Calculator, a Power Max Bonded, 180-grain,
.30-06 load owns a BC of .394. As such, it retains 1,136 ft.-lbs. of energy at 500 yards. I don’t
recommend shooting game at such distances,
but know that if you do your part, this ammo
does have the capability. If you prefer a traditional, lead-core bullet that you can use with
confidence on game ranging in size from deer
to elk—while also being inexpensive enough
to shoot for practice—Winchester Power Max
Bonded ammo is very tough to beat.
There can be no guessing
when it comes to making the
perfect shot on an animal.

Long-Range Hunting
The definition of “long range”
varies with the skill level of
individual hunters. To me
it means shooting animals
between 300 to 500 yards.
Inside 300, I know I can shade
slightly high and into the wind
to hit my target. Beyond 300,
however, calculations are
necessary in addition to a rocksolid rest and predictable wind.
Before ever attempting
such a shot, I must intimately know my rifle, my scope and that my bullet will
perform as it must when it strikes. There can be no guessing when it comes
to making the perfect shot on an animal. The Winchester Ballistic

launch the Ballistics Calculator directly on your web browser, or if using
an iPhone, iPad or Windows phone, you can click on the link to the App

opened, select your Winchester load then enter environmental factors
such as temperature and wind. Bullet path, drift and energy/velocity
data are viewed easily either in graph or table/data form.
For example, I wish to hunt caribou with my 7mm WSM rifle using
the AccuBond CT 160-gr. load. After choosing it, I manipulate the
sight-in range to find that with a 225-yard zero, my bullet will never
arch more than 3 inches high or 3 inches low from 0 to 275 yards. So,
using the 225-yard zero, I see a target 450 yards away. I learn that my
bullet will drop 23.9 inches and drift 12.1 inches in a 10 mph right-toleft crosswind. While on the range, I’ll adjust my scope to its highest
power (for consistency) and figure out where to hold my crosshair for
23.9 inches of elevation and 12.1 inches of windage. (Or I can
dial-in the adjustments if I wish). Next, I’ll shoot to verify,
then note the data for future use in the field. Significant time
spent on the range will sharpen the skills needed for longrange shooting and hunting.

ast season’s spring gobbler
hunters first gained confidence in the new Long
Beard® XR™ load during patterning sessions before the season. They then confirmed
it afield. Rumors of a new innovative traditional turkey load—more affordable and consistently reliable; even at extended ranges—
were proven true. Winchester Ammunition’s
new Shot-Lok™ Technology has pretty much
changed the face of modern turkey hunting.
Let’s back up a bit though. If you’re an
old-school turkey hunter like me who first
chased birds during a time when dedicated
turkey loads weren’t yet created—and happily
embraced some of the first options—you accepted certain limitations and adjusted your
shooting with them. Once a turkey stepped
inside 40 yards, you pulled the trigger—but
didn’t often push it further fearing a miss, or
worse yet, a crippling loss. You knew what
existing shotgun loads could and couldn’t do.
My general—and ideal—killing zone, then
and now, often rested between 25 and 35 yards.
Let’s face it, a big part of the turkey hunting
thrill is watching a strutting gobbler stalk your
calling at close range. Still, the
Long Beard XR load shows
you can have confidence even
at extended ranges beyond the
traditional magic 40 number,
situation depending—including times when you misjudge
distance and the reliable load
bails you out.

Patterning Sessions
In May 2013, during the final days of
Wyoming’s spring turkey season, I patterned
the prototype Long Beard XR load for the
first time. Let’s just say I was impressed.
Here’s why.
Our Wyoming shooting session first
included the Long Beard XR load paired
with paper targets set at standard 20-, 30and 40-yard marks—the classic end line in
the sand for taking gobblers. All of those on
hand used loaner shotguns, equipped with
various sighting systems. Some firearms
shot well in the get acquainted period; some
didn’t. By the end of it though, after adjusting sighting systems to personal preferences, all of us were putting gobbler-killing
charges downrange. Overall consistency
with a veteran group of turkey hunters said
plenty: Long Beard XR was certainly reliable at typical turkey killing distances.
Once we were all dialed in, however,
we pushed shots to 50 and 60 steps, and the
patterns, as advertised, still held up well on
paper. Pretty cool stuff.
And then the storm arrived. Steady days
of wind-driven rain thwarted any attempts to
tag some late-season turkeys with the promising load. Most never even saw or worked
a gobbler. One hunter filled a tag, averting
a complete camp skunking. It turned out
we’d have to wait until next season when the
Long Beard XR load would be available to
all turkey hunters to see just how well this
promised marvel would perform in the field.

Second Round
The next season couldn’t come fast
enough for me. When it did, I first
hunted with the Long Beard XR in
Oklahoma before embarking to other
parts of the country during the 2014
spring campaign. Patterning sessions in
that first camp, now with different hunters, were equally consistent. Generally
speaking, paper targets again revealed
definitive killing patterns at 20, 30, 40,
50 and, yes, 60 yards.

The SCIENCE
OF SHOT-LOK
TECHNOLOGY
Even with standard grex buffer, air pockets between
pellets remain in the shot column.
Set-back forces created during ignition cause
shot to deform until the air spaces are filled up.
Set back forces have a greater effect at the
bottom of the shot column versus the top. The result
is a portion of the shot exits the barrel deformed,
which opens up the pattern and creates flyers.

Curious about the potential
edge of range, we even tested it
out to 70 steps. Even then pellets
found their way into the killing
zone of the paper gobbler’s neck
and head. Bear in mind now, we’re
talking about controlled conditions with shooters sitting comfortably and unmoving targets
that were paper thin, not made
of thicker feathers and tissue.
The nice thing is we successfully
made the transition from shooting bench to wary spring gobblers. Our total

of it and migrate through it (inside the wad).
When it hardens, all air space is eliminated

The Super X3 Long Beard Shotgun
Design features found on the Winchester Super X3 Long Beard shotgun will
help turkey hunters kill birds more effectively.
As design features go, Glenn Hatt, Winchester Repeating Arms product
manager, says, “The pistol grip butt stock helps tame recoil and makes it easier
to hold, aim and even raise the barrel when that tom sneaks in and catches
you off guard. Three interchangeable butt pads and three interchangeable
comb pieces to help fit the shotgun to varying lengths of pull—and to adapt for
shooting with open sights or scope/red dot systems—are also included.”
A TRUGLO fiber-optic front sight with an adjustable folding rear sight—
plus a cantilever scope mount attached to the barrel for optics—increases
consistency from shot to shot. The 12-gauge Long Beard turkey gun also
includes a Briley X-Full Long Beard Invector-Plus extended choke tube

much truer, straighter and tighter. Tighter
patterns result, with more energy and farther
downrange potential.” But there’s more…
“We’re seeing twice the number of pellets
beyond 50 yards as in other standard lead loads,”
Criner says. “You’re getting a lot more pellets
and better penetration. This product is as good
as high-density loads, but at a less expensive
lead price. It’s the best of both worlds.”

Hunting Load: Rooster XR
The Rooster XR™ shotshell is built with the same Shot-Lok™
Technology as the Long Beard XR turkey load. There’s a
difference though.
“Turkey loads need heavier shot weight and lower velocity,”
says Brad Criner, Winchester’s senior shotshell and rimfire
product manager. “Pheasant loads require a lighter shot load, but
higher velocity. With spring gobblers you want concentrated shot
patterns—ideally on a stationary bird, aimed at the head and neck.
Conversely, with pheasants your target is flying. The pattern must
open up. You need body shot penetration to break wings; vitals
must be hit.” This is where Shot-Lok Technology fits in.
“If you hunt wild pheasants, they won’t hold at times,” Criner
said. “They will get up at 40 or 50 yards. Longer shots are needed.
Velocity is cranked up for faster, better downrange patterning
and penetration using the Shot-Lok Technology in the Rooster XR
shell.” This ultimately gives hunters the confidence they need to
make ethical killing shots at extended ranges on pheasants, too.

I routinely take it for granted that the

Blind Side ammunition combines
ground-breaking, stacked HEX Shot technology and the Diamond Cut Wad in the most

The HEX Shot pellets are hexahedronal
(shaped much like dice), and literally stack
together inside the shell, resulting in up to
15 percent more pellets in every shell.
Loaded with 100 percent HEX Shot,
hunters get more pellets on target, a larger
kill zone and more trauma-inducing pellets
than ever before. The shot is designed to

Because HEX shot is obviously a less
efficient aerodynamic shape than traditional
round pellets, this hard-hitting hexahedronal shot is contained in a solid, unsplit
shotcup to prevent the shot charge from
behaving like a spreader load and opening

Winchester and Ducks Unlimited
– Partnering for the Future of
Conservation and Shooting Sports
The undercurrents of Winchester’s
conservation support run deep
throughout their history. John Olin,
the founder of Winchester’s parent
company, was an avid sportsman and
conservationist and set the company
on a long and respected path of support
for conservation organizations such as
Ducks Unlimited. Perhaps the most visible
aspect of the partnership with DU is
that Winchester continues to be the only
ammunition company granted permission
to use the DU Proud Sponsor logo on their
waterfowl ammunition packaging.
“Winchester is proud to be part of
that conservation heritage and has
been a prominent sponsor of Ducks
Unlimited for more than 25 years,” says
Brett Flaugher, Winchester Ammunition
vice president of marketing, sales
and strategy. “Through this
partnership, Winchester has
supported Duck’s Unlimited’s
wetlands and waterfowl
conservation projects with its
many resources.”
As a tribute to the partnership,
Winchester was highlighted in a special
short film on Olin, his famous Nilo Farms
and his prized Labrador retriever King
Buck at DU’s 2014 National Convention
in St. Louis. Perhaps the most famous
retriever in history, King Buck finished
83 national series out of a possible 85,
and earned the title of the nation’s finest
field trial retriever in 1953 and 1954.
To this day, no other retriever has ever
completed more than 62 successive
national series. Just as notable, King
Buck also has the distinction of being
the only nonwaterfowl subject to grace
a Federal duck stamp, making his image
an icon of waterfowling art and culture.

“For more than 25 years, DU and
Winchester have worked together to
achieve amazing results for wetlands
conservation and to ensure that
future generations will have the same
opportunity to enjoy the wildlife and
wild places that we do today,” says Jim
Alexander, DU’s director of corporate
partnerships. “Winchester is as
committed to conservation as they
are to manufacturing and selling the
highest quality ammunition available on
the market today. We look forward to
many more years of partnership with
Winchester on behalf of waterfowl and
waterfowlers across North America.”

Predator hunting is fun, accessible and beneficial to

hese things we know: Mule deer are declining. Bobwhite quail are but a shadow of their former numbers. Pheasants
are struggling. Even woodchucks have disappeared from big chunks of the Midwest.
These things we also know: All those
species are eaten by predators. Coyotes have
spread from the West into every state from
Maine to Florida. Raccoons pioneered out of
the southeast and now ravage Seattle. Foxes
hunt coast to coast. Nest-robbing crows are
reaching pest levels across the country, and
ground squirrels in the West are partying in
alfalfa fields like its 1999.
All of this suggests it might be time for a bit
of judicious predator control. Plenty of hunters
have already figured this out. In just the past
eight years the number of predator hunters has
doubled. Many of these are young and new
shooters, the kind often with more time and
enthusiasm than money. Recognizing this,
Winchester engineers set out to design new,
lower priced ammunition and even a brand

sacrificing performance.
Costs Less, Shoots Great
Face it, money matters, and when you can
save a few dollars on a box of coyote or
ground squirrel ammo, you’re going to do
it, especially if you don’t have to sacrifice
performance. With Varmint X® centerfire ammo, you don’t. In .204 Ruger, .223
Rem., .22-250 Rem. and .243 Win., Varmint

Ballistic Silvertip, but shoots hot on its heels.
Varmint X cases are brass instead of nickel

their boattails. But the sharp polycarbonate

I certainly didn’t during a recent Wyoming
prairie dog and marmot hunt.
Several friends and I were helping a
rancher with his annual population control
efforts on the burrowing rodents. In the
bad old days ranchers used to poison prairie
dogs wholesale and wipe out entire colonies.
The more enlightened approach is to trim
the annual increase by selective shooting.
This leaves carcasses behind to feed coyotes,
badgers, eagles, various hawks and other
predators that then have less appetite for
pronghorn and mule deer fawns.
“See those three fat ones on the sidehill?”
I asked my friend Aaron Lisech. He was peering through a big Nikon scope with a ballistic
reticle atop a Winchester M70 Featherweight

Varmint X rounds.
“About 350 yards out?” he asked. I pressed
the button on my Swarovski EL Range binocular and read the precise distance.
“It’s 373,” I said. “Should be about a 12inch drop. Hold three MOA high.” Seconds
later the rifle thumped and so did one of the
prairie dogs. “Were you aiming for the one
in the middle?” I asked.
“Yup.”
“Well, you got him.” Aaron was hitting
more than missing and, with each shot,
falling more in love with the .243 Win. Our
friends were doing the same with Browning

A True Rimfire Champ
On that same hunt I was shooting what most
would call a pipsqueak rifle: a Winchester

the tiny but powerfully deadly 17 Winchester
Super Magnum. Talk about an inexpensive
option for varmints. You can buy 50 of these
for the cost of 20 of the cheapest centerfire

performance. At 3,000 fps muzzle velocity,
the polymer-tipped 20-grain bullet from

8 inches flatter than the .17 HMR at 250

Win. Mag. Heck, it’s even 6 inches flatter
than the .22 Hornet! And if you’re concerned
about wind deflection, well, you’ve come to
the right place. At 250 yards in a 10-mph cross
wind, the 17 Winchester Super Magnum
deflects 14 inches less than the .17 HMR,
10 inches less than the .22 Hornet and 2 feet
less than the .22 Win. Mag. This is the rimfire
champ of all time, and with it I was popping
off prairie dogs with deadly efficiency out to
200 yards, sometimes as far as 250 yards. I
put five shots on paper at 300 yards and they
clustered in a 3-inch circle.

skunks, raccoons, crows and the rest of
the carnivorous crowd alive. Old barns,
rock piles, culverts, farm equipment
and even bridge overpasses provide
denning sites and shelter from killing
storms that formerly limited raccoons
and opossums to warmer climes. Irrigated
grass, alfalfa, wheat and other crops lay
out a smorgasbord for a dozen species of
burrowing rodents.
In short, we humans have created a
world in which prey species lose habitat
while predatory species gain it. It’s
therefore our responsibility to balance the
scales—or at least reduce the pressure
a bit. If we shoot a deer and a few birds
and bunnies each year, shouldn’t we also
shoot a few of their predators?

Oklahoma provide shelter and denning sites

So You Want
to Shoot…

Whether you prefer to shoot shotguns, rifles, handguns or
all three, odds are there is a place to shoot and a fun way
to improve your skills right down the road. By Doug Howlett
he firearms industry has enjoyed significant growth in recent years. Whether
it has been the popularity in modern
sporting rifles, interest in concealed carry
or simply wanting to find out what all the
excitement is about that has brought people
to their local gun shop, one thing is true for
firearms enthusiasts new and old; never has

shooter in America. With at least 20 million
recreational shooters in the United States, now
is truly the Golden Age of gun ownership, and
opportunities to target shoot are not only easier
than ever to find, but they are plentiful—and
growing—as well.
Pick Your Shooting Passion
For many people in the shooting sports, it was
a particular interest from someone in their
family or a close friend that got them shooting
in the first place and has shaped their own
interest in the type of firearms and ammunition they buy and use. Maybe their father or
grandfather loves to duck hunt or deer hunt,
so they developed an interest for the outdoors
and hunting and buy guns with that pursuit in
mind. Maybe a good friend at work talked up
the thrill of busting clays on a trap range or
sporting clays course and after joining them
for a few rounds, the new shooter now thirsts
for their next sunny Saturday spent behind the
stock of a well-crafted over/under shotgun. Or
maybe, a desire to have the ability to defend
their home led them to the first purchase of
a handgun or shotgun and after practicing at
the local range a few times, they realize shooting isn’t just a practical skill, it’s darn fun, too.
As a result, now they are looking for more
opportunities to shoot or even compete.

“There are a lot of people buying firearms
today that need a nice, clean place to shoot
safely and to learn to shoot correctly. That’s
why we opened our second location…there is
such great demand for it,” says Ed Coleman,
general manager of the recently opened
Colonial Shooting Academy in Virginia
Beach, Va., a 34-lane indoor shooting and
training facility. It is the second of Colonial
Shooting Academy’s facilities with their
flagship location in Richmond, Va., having
been open now for just over three years.
The Richmond facility earned the National
Shooting Sports Foundation’s Range of the
Year honors in 2013.
“Every day we have more people coming
into shooting,” says Coleman. “A lot of them
start out wanting a gun to defend their home or
learn more about concealed carry. But once they
start shooting, they realize it is a lot of fun and
they want to do it more.” That’s where classes
and a steady schedule of events come into play.
There is a shooting activity—often multiple ones—designed for virtually every gun
made and with more people joining the gun
ownership ranks, ammo manufacturers and
range owners have answered the call to provide more products and services to fit every
interest. What’s even better is shooting in
one type of activity or game often improves
your abilities in another shooting activity of
interest. For instance, sporting clays, trap and
skeet are a great and fun way for upland and
waterfowl hunters to keep skills sharp during
the off-season, while smallbore competitions
with .22-caliber rifles are a great way to develop accuracy that will translate into successful
long-range shots on big game with larger caliber rifles. Depending on your favorite firearm,
there is a shooting sport for you. Here are
some of the more popular ones.
Handgun Proficiency
With concealed carry a driving factor in
today’s high interest in firearms, many
modern target shooters own and enjoy
handguns. From inexpensive and convenient indoor range time, often located just
minutes from any home even in urban and
suburban environments, to a veritable vegetable soup of organizations that sanction
and organize competitions at local, state
and even national levels—USPSA (United
States Practical Shooting Association),
IDPA (International Defensive Pistol
Association) and IPSC (International
Practical Shooting Confederation) to name
just a few—there are ample places for

Shotgun Sports
It is estimated that of the 20 million
or so shooting enthusiasts, almost
50 percent of them enjoy shooting
shotguns. For the scattergun enthusiast, there are countless courses
and types of shooting to enjoy with
traditional activities such as skeet,
trap and 5-stand always popular.
Sporting clays, a golf-like shooting
game typically with 10 to 15 stations
and often laid out in a scenic outdoor
environment, roared to popularity
in the late 1980s and 1990s and
hasn’t looked back yet. Increasingly,
resorts that offer sporting clays, also
have other activities for couples that feature
fine dining, spas, equestrian activities and
much more.

Mix It Up With 3-Gun, Cowboy Action
Can’t decide which gun or competition is
for you? One of the fastest growing target
shooting games today is 3-Gun, which is an
exciting, adrenaline-fueled timed shooting
event where competitors fire on targets using
shotguns, rifles and handguns.
“We’re adding more matches every year
and not just in America, but all over the world.
We’re going global baby,” says an excited Chad
Adams, vice president of 3-Gun Nation,
the parent company of the National 3-Gun
Association, which oversees and organizes the
events. In just six months in 2013, the association’s 3-Gun Club series went from an idea
with no clubs to 67 clubs and climbing.
Cowboy action shooting is another event
that not only allows people to live out their
Old West fantasies by competing with revolvers, lever-action rifles and side-by-side
scatterguns, but also allows them to dress the
part as well and create personas as colorful as
the legends from this fascinating time in our
nation’s history.
Likewise, qualification shooting though
programs such as the Winchester/NRA
Marksmanship Qualification Program are
a great way to improve proficiency in any
type of firearm preferred including rifles,
shotguns, handguns, muzzleloaders and even
airguns. Shooters can participate at their
own pace, while working their way through
a prescribed set of drills that takes them
through beginning skill levels all the way up
to expert status.
No matter what kind of guns you prefer to
shoot, or how competitive or noncompetitive
you wish to be, there is a shooting sport that
everyone in the family can enjoy. Check out
a range or shooting facility near you or visit
the NSSF’s WhereToShoot.org to find a nearby range and other resources for recreational
shooters. Then it’s just a matter of grabbing
your gun, your eye and ear protection and
your Winchester ammo and heading out for a
whole lot of fun.

Win3Gun offers the competitor three hardhitting 12-gauge offerings depending on what

7½ shot standard load, the other is a magnum
load of 00 Buck and finally a low recoil slug.
The No. 7½ loads come 25 to a box; the 00
Buck and low recoil slugs come five to a box.

NSSF Project ChildSafe
Recreational shooting is
great fun. But gun ownership also carries with
it many responsibilities,
key among them, keeping people safe
when around firearms and keeping guns
out of the wrong hands—particularly
out of the hands of young children. In an
effort to better educate the public about
safe, responsible firearms ownership,
the National Shooting Sports Foundation
(NSSF) started Project ChildSafe in 2003
as a nationwide program that promotes
safe firearms handling and storage
practices. A key part of that educational
effort is the free distribution of firearm
Safety Kits, which include a cable-style
gun lock and a brochure that discusses
safe handling and storage.
Since it’s inception, the project has
partnered with law enforcement agencies

RED TEXT = NEW PRODUCT
Ballistic Coefficient (BC): The “Ballistic Coefficient” or B.C. of a projectile (bullet) is a measure of its efficiency in flight or how well it is able to overcome
air resistance. The higher the ballistic coefficient, the less velocity a bullet will lose over distance — resulting in less drop at longer ranges and more
energy on target. So, for long range hunting or target shooting, the higher the B.C. the better. See Winchester’s new Ballistics Calculator on the
Winchester Web site.

**USAGE GUIDE:
It is important to understand that rimfire ammunition is very versatile and has broad cross-over
with many applications. This game/usage guide is a “starting point” for the beginner sportsman to guide the user in product usage applications. As you become more experienced and
knowledgeable, broader usage applications are possible. Choosing a round is subjective and
will vary depending on personal preference, the gun used, environmental conditions
and other factors.

It’s hard to believe that 2015 marks five decades of the AA shotshell. Designed for consistent
performance over a wide temperature range and for uniform ballistics with no wad break-ups,
the AA took flight from the Winchester engineering labs in 1965. At the time, it was dubbed the
“ultimate target load,” and it still is today. Be it straight out of the box shooting or reloading, AA
is undeniably the target load the majority of Americans go to when they are seeking the most
dependable shotshell in the industry today. Happy Anniversary AA.
