2009 Sammamish Chamber of Commerce President’s Message
It is an honor to be able to address you on the 10th anniversary of both the City of Sammamish and of the Sammamish
Chamber of Commerce.

The Sammamish Chamber of Commerce is the voice of business in Sammamish and is one of the most dynamic business
organizations on the Eastside. Did you know that Sammamish
has over 3,000 business located within the city limits? The
Chamber directory provides you with access to many of these
organizations by providing a quick, easy to use guide for local
member businesses.
Whether you are new to Sammamish or a long time resident please come and be
our guest at one the many Chamber sponsored events. If you are an early riser
please come meet us at our first-thing-in-the-morning networking event, Sammamish Connects. A great way to start the day, this monthly networking breakfast is
well attended and a great way to get to know local business owners.
Our luncheons at Bake’s Place feature exceptional speakers discussing current
business and local trends. If your interests lie in evening events and you are looking for opportunities to meet local businesses please come to one of our member
sponsored Business-After-Hours.
The Chamber sponsors the Sammamish Farmers’ Market. The Farmers’ Market
draws large crowds and provides a great way to support local farmers by purchasing locally grown foods. The Market also features local crafters and hosts several
cultural events. The Farmers’ Market is held on Wednesday evenings from May
through September. The market is open from 4:00 to 8:00 pm and is located at the
City Hall commons on 228th.
This year the City of Sammamish is turning 10 and so is the Chamber! Please plan
to come and celebrate our 10th anniversary August 29th. We will co-host a gala
event featuring family oriented activities during the day and evening activities for
adults. Live jazz, great food and lots of your neighbors will be there.
I am excited about 2009, about the growth in Chamber membership and in the
opportunities for local businesses that the Chamber offers its members. I am sure
that you will find, as I did, that the Sammamish Chamber of Commerce Directory
is a great resource for finding local businesses to meet your needs.

Welcome To Sammamish
2009 Sammamish Mayor’s Message
The youngest city in Western Washington, Sammamish, was
incorporated in 1999 as the citizens wanted more of a local
say in the evolution of this beautiful community. In the
first ten years of existence the City has improved and added
much of the infrastructure so necessary for servicing its
citizens.
New streets, new parks, more trails and sidewalks, and a
central Sammamish Commons park are making this budding jewel of the Eastside the envy of the nation. As Money
Magazine said a couple of years ago when it ranked SamMayor Don Gerend
mamish as the 11th best community in the United States,
“Nestled between the Cascades and the Olympic Mountains,
Sammamish embodies the natural beauty of the Northwest. It’s a comfortable place
to raise children, with great schools and an array of organized youth activities.”
More recently, BusinessWeek had this to say, “The wealthy eastern suburb of Seattle
is a good place to enjoy the outdoors. Homes with waterfront views surround Lake
Sammamish and other lakes. In addition to offering ample opportunities for water
sports, Sammamish has numerous walking trails, golf courses, and wooded areas.”
With one third of our population under age 18, this community of families enjoys
one of the lowest crime rates in the Northwest. Yes, we have a lot to celebrate,
and during our tenth year we took the opportunity to do just that. With art and
essay contests for the kids, and a Sammamish math quiz for the more technically
minded, the Sammamish 10th birthday celebration culminated with the placing of
video memories/messages and a lot of other items into a time capsule that will be
buried by the skateboard park on August 29th, with a plaque ordering it not to be
opened until 2049 when the city is 50 years old.
Sammamish enjoys some great community events, including the Chamber of
Commerce sponsored Farmers Market every Wednesday from 4pm to 8pm, May to
September. On the 4th of July we have a real happening at the Sammamish Commons, culminating in one of the best fireworks shows in the region. During the
summers we have concerts and Shakespeare in the Park, when the citizens aren’t
hiking or biking, or swimming or boating in Lake Sammamish, Pine Lake and Beaver
Lake. And for those that want a real challenge, there is the Beaver Lake Triathlon
in August. Other significant events in this family-friendly city are the Nightmare
at Beaver Lake Halloween fun, the Sammamish Symphony concerts and the Sammi
Awards of Distinction.
Of significance to businesses in Sammamish is the Town Center Plan which is evolving in the over 200 acres centered around the Sammamish Commons. The Plan calls
for mixed use zoning and green spaces, with up to 2,000 dwelling units and some
600,000 square feet of retail/commercial allowed. In 2009 the City is completing
the detailing of design regulations and infrastructure needs, and we are looking
forward to some creative development proposals as the economy rebounds.

Arts Commission Formed by the City Council in 2003, this commission of Art
enthusiasts assists the City in promotion and facilitation of our public art in the community. Watch for announcements of the big art exhibit in June of each year.

Sammamish Youth Board The City’s Park & Recreation Department facilitates
this active body of youth thanks to the creativity and drive of a local high school
graduate and the City’s support and dedication to bettering the lives of Sammamish
