Exzellenzhaus, Zurmaienstr.114
Trier, 20h30,
Headlights is an indie rock band
from Champaign, Illinois. The band
was formed following the dissolution
of Absinthe Blind, when members
Erin Fein, Seth Fein and Brett
Sanderson formed a band named
Orphans. It was only when Tristan
Wraight started writing songs with
Fein that Headlights was formed.
Headlights released The Enemies
EP in 2004, and followed that up
in 2006 with a split single with
Canadian indie rock band The Most
Serene Republic. Later in 2006, the
band released their debut album, Kill
Them With Kindness. Synthie pop
mixed with thoughtful melodies.

Multi-faceted American jazz
trumpeter Randy Brecker has
always had his roots in jazz, but
delivers music that is full of stylistic
variation from bop to pop, from
funk to fusion. Another star of the
international jazz scene is Claudio
Roditi, a master of Latin Bebop.
Andrea Tofanelli is one of the most
successful Latin pop trumpeters
on the scene (Luciano Pavarotti,
Jovanotti, Adriano Celentano,...)
and Ernie Hammes, Luxembourg’s
virtuoso trumpeter and flugelhorn
player, has long been one of the big
names in the local jazz scene. This
unique meeting of four star soloists
from different genres promises to be
an explosive virtuoso performance
of specially arranged standards and
original compositions.

Galeazzi (vocals), Michel Godard

In the tradition of Italian singing,
the “cancione” would be too
restrictive a classification-their scope
ranges from tender love songs to
improvisations to stirring pieces of
revolt from the Great War. The band
leader is singer Lucilla Galeazzi,
born in Italy, with a passion for music
from her roots.

The first edition of ‘Open Mic’, an
evening of free musical expression,
took place on 14 December. It was
a great success and Rockhalcafé
was already full at 22h. This first
edition proved 3 things to us: 1)
that a curious and interested public
existed for this kind of evening, 2)
that a good few rappers, slammers
and other Hip Hop fans have
well and truly taken hold of the
country’s microphones, 3) that our
Rockhalcafé is the ideal venue for
this event. Two members of the
band, Uranami, will take care of the
evening’s entertainment.

Kiss & Swallow and The Alternative
are massively hitting the waves
all over the European electrounderground scene currently. On
top of his remixing credits-artists
such as Placebo and Sophie Ellis
Bextor-Chris is launching I AM
X. Musically, it’s a cross between
the contemporary edgy electronic
production of Detroit or Berlin, the
pop of Prince and Roxy Music,
the electronic howl of Cabaret
Voltaire, the emotional clarity of
Curtis Mayfield or the weirdness
of Dresden Dolls. Chris’ voice,

While left-handers are no longer
forced to use their right hands

most technology is designed with
right-handers in mind. Yet it has
been demonstrated that while the
left hemisphere of the brain – the
seat of rational thinking – is more
developed in right-handers, the right
hemisphere – the seat of imaginative
thinking – is more powerful in
left-handers. This event will feature

Non-stop projection of this short film
in the Medialab. In the artist’s words,
‘During my first visit to Japan in
2002, I wrote down every Japanese
word that I had to know before
visiting Japan. The thin vocabulary
of about 150 words that I managed
to scrape together had to do almost
exclusively with an exotic and
imaginary Japan, or a consumable
Japan… with eating Japanese food,
Japan at war, Japanese pop culture,
the Japanese art and fashion worlds,
and, overwhelmingly, with dozens of
Japanese brand names. I asked five
Japanese-speakers to improvise a
series of scenes from daily life, using
my primitive foreigner’s Japanese.’

Elusive and little known, Tziganes
or Gypsies evoke many confused
feelings: fear, fascination... The
conditions of their appearance in
Europe, their ancestry and culture,
their beliefs and day-to-day lives,
how they appear (or don’t) in
history, all create a place for them
in our society as the ‘Others’. The
identity that we give them is full of
prejudice and stereotyping, which
is characteristic of how we classify
cultures alien to us. Through a series
of original objects from everyday
life, documents and archives, works
of art and films, we discover the
world of the Tzigane, complete with
interactive media.

of Shakespeare’s four romances
after Pericles (1983), The Tempest

class Cymbeline as a comedy. The
namesake and main character,
Cymbeline, is based on a true British
chieftan, Cunobelinus, who ruled
before Roman times. Imogen is one
of the few great Shakesperian roles
for a woman. This ‘problem play’

The legendary Shaolin monastery
is considered as the place of origin
of all Chinese martial arts, called
Wushu. About 1,500 years ago,
the monk Ta Bo, also known as
Bodhidharma, settled over there
and developed the ‘18 techniques
of Buddha’s followers’, based upon
24 external and internal muscle
exercises ensuring the physical
training of the monks before and
during the long meditation periods.
‘The Masters of Shaolin Kung Fu’
come from the heart of the province
of Hen-an, where the Shaolin
monastery still exists, at the foot of
the holy mountain of Song Shan.
Being at present the sole production
from the Shaolin district, they really
feel under the obligation to respect
the pure teaching of the Wushu arts.
A great number of grand masters
and national champions are now on
tour in Europe – as ambassadors
of Kung Fu teaching – with a
really sensational show especially
conceived for Russia’s president
Putin. After a long break, the original
production ‘ The Gala of the Masters’
is again on tour in Europe, with a
completely new and very lavish
show. They give an insight into
the Confucian doctrine, but they
also present breathtaking Qi-Gong
exercises such as ‘The flying needle’
or ‘The bed of nails’. The unified
whole formed by the body and the
spirit is presented in an explicit and
understandable way through this
impressive show.

‘In the Ghetto’ is a musical which
presents the world of traditional tribal
music and dance from South Africa.
The dancers wear magnificent
costumes and also introduce
elements of Hip-Hop and jazz, with
a winning mixture of tradition and
modernity. Singing, acrobatics and
strong vocals make this production
a fantastic show of discovery of life
in Soweto, evoking ancient legends
in a rhythmic festive spirit which
fascinates and excites the public
every time.

- Long Distance Breath
Grand Théâtre, Rond-point

Bernd Uwe Marszan is one of the
great dancers of the Tanztheater
Wuppertal − Pina Bausch, with
whom he has been working since
1989. In Long Distance Breath,
the latest of his own projects, his
choreography plays with ideas of
grief and sensuality, nests between
the ashes of the Twin Towers
covering New York and the dancing
Satyre, the Greek statue that was
recovered by fishermen from the
ocean depths of Sicily. For this
extraordinary piece about arid land,
desire and life, he has collaborated
with sculptor Bernard Michel and
African singer-musician Djibril
Ba. It is a solo-piece performed
by an outstanding dancer in an
environment of video projection,
supported by the voice of singer
Melissa Madden Gray, who has
previously worked with South-African
choreographer Robyn Orlin.

While they maintained a classical

Cardoso’s, Ivonice Satie, gave a
new direction to the company with
a return to Brazilian roots by u of
sing a very different choreographic

the work of the troup whose artistic

20th century French philosophy. In
Foucault’s own words, ‘To accept

illustration, photography or graphic
design, either by professionals or
by students, and offers a chance

Bistrot littéraire “Belles
Roumanies 2007”
KulturFabric, Esch
Literary event on Romanian poetry
with Ana Blandiana, Emil Brumaru
and Pierre Joris (Luxembourgish
guest) and Alexandru Calinescu
moderating. Ana Blandiana was
born in 1942 near to Timisoara,
and now lives in Bucharest. After
the publication of her first poem,
she was denounced as a “daughter
of the enemy of the people” and
therefore lost her right to further
education for 4 years and to publish
further works. In 1964, she published
her first works of poetry and enjoyed
immediate success due to her ability
to write in a pure and simple style
about subjects such as death and
survival, and desirous love. Born
in 1939, in Soviet Moldova, Emil
Brumaru, medically trained, has
been dedicated to writing poetry
for many years. His 1st poetry
volume was published in 1970,
systematically eluding communist
censureship, with a baroque style
and provocative humour. His poetry
is ingenious, with erotic symbolism
which penetrates daily life. He is
one of the most important and little
known poets of Romania. Pierre
Joris left Luxembourg at the age
of 19 and has since resided in
England, Algeria, France and the
USA. He has published over 20
poetry compendiums incuding some
in French. He has made many
translations into French and into
English, and has published with
Jérôme Rothenberg, an anthology
of 2 volumes of avant-garde poetry
which spans the 20th century from
the world over. Since1992, he
has been teaching at New York
University in Albany.

human blood. And once our Audrey
has the taste, it isn’t satisfied with
bleeding Seymour into an anaemic
state. “Feed me More!” Seymour is
given the choice between loads of

plot thickens as the man-eating plant
continues to attract attention - and
dollars - all the while getting fatter. “I

Power-driven brass interpretations
from Mozart to Robbie Williams
A very special concert evening
featuring the brass section of
the Munich Philharmonie which,
under the direction of the witty and
eccentric Bob Ross, has becomes
something of a cult ensemble.
Packed to capacity audiences
everywhere, from Munich to Berlin
via Luxembourg, have been amazed
by their performances. Entertaining
variety, fun and sentimentality, full-on
power – those words can describe
performances that include everything
from Mozart to Robbie Williams. This
is a must-see concert for anyone
who loves music. In 1999 and 2002
Blechschaden won the Echo record
prize. As well as performances in
the Berlin Philharmonie and the
Old Opera House in Frankfurt, the
ensemble has toured extensively in
Asia, Israel and the United States.
Conductor: Bob Ross. http://www.

An interpretation of Roald Dahl’s
James and the Giant Peach. A giant
peach tells the story of a little boy
who lives with his aunts, two horrible
scarecrows who make his life a living
hell. One day, he is given a bag of
little magical crocodile-tongues.
He drops the bag… and this is the
beginning of a fantastic adventure…
A humorous story, full of suspense,
about a giant peach and insects as
big as humans. LU

The dancer appears on stage,
wrapped into a puffy, shiny ball, just

variety of fabrics, cloths and tissues.
What can you do with fabric? You

quickly alter your appearance and
adopt a different personality through
donning a disguise. In this poetical

While many people enjoy the return of certain trends and feel a sense of
nostalgia when seeing their favourite team sporting shirts that are a throwback
to past seasons, one trend that most football supporters would have been glad
to see the last of is hooliganism.
At last summer’s World Cup in Germany, organisers impressed with a
tournament under the banner “A time to make friends”. They had kept violent
confrontations to a minimum with a zero tolerance policy and had worked
closely with other European police forces. So, it is ironic that after all their hard
work the resurfacing of hooliganism should begin in Germany. To add insult to
injury, the main culprits are based in one of the host cities. Over the past few
months, fans of Lok Leipzig and other lower league clubs have seized matches
as opportunities to destroy stadiums and go on violent rampages through the
towns of opposing teams. All these incidences have culminated in the events
that unfolded in February, which saw 800 fans clash with riot police ending in
36 police officers in hospital.
Despite this, there are prominent people in German football who do not
believe that hooliganism is a threat to the federation. One Bundesliga manager
argued that larger incidents have so far been isolated to Eastern Germany and
confined to lower league encounters. Further suggesting that the problems are
born out of the economic difficulties that much of the region faces, rather than
a change for the worse within the football fan bases.
But, the situation in Italy tells a different story. Here, violence in and around
stadiums during Series A games has grown in such a way that the interior
minister has intervened in forcing clubs to deal with the problem. The fact that
most of the troublemakers, the ‘Ultras’ groups, are funded by the clubs
themselves has not been ignored. The Italian clubs have, until now, allowed
these fans to police the area of the ground, which they ‘own’ themselves, this
has led to flares, missiles and on one occasion a moped to be thrown during
matches. The government has now imposed strict new security regulations on
clubs, which if not met will mean they will be forced to play games behind
closed doors. Many clubs have argued that it will take them months until their
stadiums conform to the new rules, but the government will not give in.
Months of supporter violence culminated in the death of a policeman when a
firebomb was thrown into his car.
An empty stadium until safety can be assured is a small price to pay as
punishment for the death a police officer.
And on a lighter note…
Our boys, in Luxembourg, have finally done it. After almost 12 gruelling years
the national football team has won an official match. Around 800 fans braved
the cold in Hesperange to witness the Red Lions come back from 1 – 0 down
at half time to defeat Gambia 2 – 1 in a friendly in preparation for the upcoming
European qualifier against Belarus.
Luxembourg v Belarus will be at the Stade Josy Barthel, route d’Arlon,
