Presentation: What It's Like to Serve in Afghanistan
Robert and Steven will be signing copies of their book, Afghanistan:
On the Bounce, which members can purchase at the meeting.
Speaker Bios:
A professional photographer for more than a decade, Robert L.
Cunningham has photographed 9 heads of state, 12 prime
ministers, 3 governors, multiple astronauts, cosmonauts, CEOs of
Fortune 500 companies, renowned actors, musicians, and
professional race car drivers, as well as service members from 15
different nations. His work has taken him aboard underway US
Navy submarines, into zero-gravity in low earth orbit, and to more
than 450 cities in 25 countries. The George W. Bush Presidential
Library and Museum features a permanent display of his work. He
has documented 132 missions as an embed photographer with the
International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. He currently
resides in Phoenix, Arizona.
Steven Hartov is the former editor-in-chief of Special Operations
Report and co-author of the New York Times best sellers In the
Company of Heroes and The Night Stalkers. His trilogy of espionage
novels, The Heat of Ramadan, The Nylon Hand of God, and The Devil’s
Shepherd, earned nominations for the National Book Award, top ten
placements in the Book of the Month Club, and translations into 6
foreign languages. His works are recommended readings by the U.S.
Army War College. He currently lives in New Jersey.

Congratulations to members Daniel Goldberg and Samuel Vovsi, who each received awards. Daniel’s In My Eyes
received the Princeton Photography Club Ann Mark Award. Mercer County Heritage also selected this image to be
part of their permanent collection. Samuel’s image, Sycamores on Black, won the Purchase Award and Honorable
Mention award. The exhibit is on view through October 9. Following are a few entries from our members. Simply
stunning.

Jay J. Brandinger received Honorable Mention in the first PSA
(Photographic Society of America) Print Division Book Essay Contest
for his Howell Living History Farm entry. The book (left, a picture of
the front cover) is currently showing at the PSA Conference in West
Yellowstone through October 3, 2015.

A New PPC Announcement … Save the Date!
A Lecture by Steven Shore, co-sponsored by PPC and Princeton University Art Museum
On Thursday, April 14, 2016, the Princeton Photography Club (PPC) and the Princeton University Art Museum
will co-sponsor a lecture by Steven Shore, on the Princeton University campus, in McCormick Hall, at 5:30 pm
(time will be confirmed in a future announcement).
Shore is an American photographer known for his images of banal scenes and objects, and for his pioneering use
of color in art photography. Rick Wright based his popular PPC workshop It’s a Shore Thang; Foundations of
Better Vision, on Shore’s book, The Nature of Photographs. He has been the director of the photography
department at Bard College since 1982. In 2010 Shore received an Honorary Fellowship from The Royal
Photographic Society.

Bird Photography 2
FREE FOR ALL PPC MEMBERS

Registration is required: [email protected]
Phil Witt will build on the first bird photography lecture given at our PPC general meeting last season. Although
he will give a brief presentation, reviewing the principles of photographing birds, for most of the session, he will
review and discuss member’s bird photographs. The session will involve practical critique and suggestions
regarding image capture, composition, and editing of members' bird images.
Participants should bring images on flash drives to review.
Matting and Framing Your Photographic Images (Princeton Day School)

Instructor: Sheila Geisler
Learn to mat and frame your photographs at home. This is a hands-on class. Bring in a photograph (5" x 7" or 8"
x 10”) and learn to use a Logan mat cutter. You will go home with a matted image and instructions about where
and what type of frames and glass or acrylic to purchase. You may bring them into the last class to have help
finishing your project. Matting materials will be supplied by the instructor.

We will review using the camera. Discuss how to make an image that gets across the maker's point. Students will
view historic and contemporary photos to see what makes them work. The class will have weekly assignments to
make images to share and discuss with the class. Student's participation is a key element in learning and
developing personal style.

Step-by-Step Lightroom Printing Workshop: How to Have Your Work Printed Affordably on
Canvas, Paper, Wood and Metal.

Have you ever visited a photo gallery and wondered, “What process did they use to achieve that look and feel?”
Today’s print technologies make it easy and affordable to find outside photo labs and print service bureaus to
create work on a wide range of materials. In this two-hour workshop, award-winning photographer and
consultant Andrew Darlow will reveal many printing processes and provide systematic Lightroom 6/CC training
to help you turn your images into printed works of art.
Each attendee will receive 10 sheets of two semi-gloss papers (one bright white and one a bit warmer) plus 10
sheets of two matte papers (one bright white and one a bit warmer) for a total of 40 sheets. These papers are
ideal for proofing on your own printer before sending the files out for printing at an outside company.
What will be covered:
• An overview of print processes, including samples of canvas, paper, wood, satin and metal print options;
• How to find the right companies to print your work (participants will receive a list of hand-picked suppliers)
• How to quickly and easily test any print process;
• How to optimize your photos one by one or in batches in Lightroom using Develop Presets and Virtual Copies;
• Hanging and display options for different print processes, and;
• How to protect your work for shipping or transportation.

MN Submission Guidelines
When preparing images for submission to the newsletter, it is no longer necessary to add the Title and you name below the
image. To keep the size and format of this information consistent for all images, the MN editor will add this information
when preparing the newsletter.
What to Send
Images and timely news about your own upcoming exhibits, publications, and other public events, such as photography
lectures or classes you will be teaching. If possible, include an exhibition announcement with your image.
How to Send:
Images should be sent as .jpg
Resize images to 240 pixels height, with 100 dpi resolution.
Having trouble preparing your image? Contact the editor at [email protected]
Include details:
Please give us accurate information. Tell us everything that an uninformed reader would need to attend your event or
acquire your publication. For exhibitions and award ceremonies, give us the details, such as venue name and address,
contact information, website, opening and closing dates, opening reception, exhibit times, event fees, etc.
For publications, tell us publication name, cover-date or volume, and in-store date, as known. Extra information is better
than too little!
If you have multiple images selected for a show, the MN Newsletter editor may show only one if the show occurs during a
time when many members are also having multiple images selected. With over 200 superb artists in our club, we may not
always be able to print all images.
We respect copyright laws. Please do not send material that is copyrighted or wholly or partly created by others. We do not
publish magazine or book pages, web pages, or materials owned or created by others.
When to Send
September through June: submit date-sensitive information three weeks before the event to ensure timely coverage.
July through September: give a minimum of three weeks. If you can't give us that much lead, send your item anyway.
Sometimes it works.
What We'll Do with Your Submission
Your text may be edited or completely rewritten for style, format, and content. If necessary, your image will be re-sized and
processed to the MN standard format.
About ‘Members' News’
Members' News celebrates and promotes Princeton Photography Club members whose photographs, photography
knowledge, or skills have been publicly recognized. We are a source of timely information for members wanting to support
their fellow club members' activities by attending their exhibitions and participating in other activities. We help members
know each other and each other's work.
To these ends Members' News solicits and reports news from members about their own upcoming exhibits, openings,
publications, lectures, classes, and other public photographic activities. We also publish non-exhibition-photographs and a
list of members' photography websites.
Members' News is compiled and written by the editor on behalf of the membership. Unless stated otherwise opinions and
policies are those of the editor, and do not necessarily reflect sentiments of other club members, including club officers.
