Yanaka
Area name “Yanaka”(Middle of the valley) is believed to have been given before
Edo period, reflecting its location in the bottom of the valley between Ueno and
Hongo heights. It is said the name was compared with its neighbor area
“Shitaya”(Foot of the valley.) Based upon the Edo city plan of the Shogunate
policy, many temples were gathered to Yanaka and created town of temples.
Thereafter Yanaka has been popular as “the town of temples and slopes, ”and in
2007 was chosen as one of “the Top 100 historical views of Beautiful Japan.”
