KANYE WEST IN 3-D
Y
o Kanye, I’m really happy for you,
and I’mma let you finish, but Beyonce
had one of the best Essence Fest
performances of all time. Of ALL TIME. Just sayin’.
While Queen B won’t be making an appearance
at this year’s Essence Music Festival, Mr. West
will be in the building July 2 at the New Orleans
Superdome. To prepare for the greatness that is the
“Louis Vuitton Don,” remind yourself daily that
you’re a mother flippin’ monster, and interrupt
as many people as you can because, as Yeezy say,
they can’t tell you nothin’. (Insert: Kanye shrug). S

TRANSFORMERs IN 3-D
J
ust when you’d hoped the war was over,
director Michael Bay refuses to tip his
cash cow: the Decepticons and Autobots
are back. And for some reason, we think this
will make you forgive him for Transformers 2.
In the third installment, Sam Witwicky’s transition
into adulthood is put on hold as the Autobots learn
of a spacecraft on the Moon and must race against
the Decepticons to obtain it and its secrets. The
tide could be turned in the Transformers’ final battle
if the information should land in the wrong hands.
The (supposedly) final, epic clash between
the Autobots and the Decepticons hits
theaters and IMAX 3D June 29. Yeah, that’s a
Wednesday…what else do you have to do? S
return of the king Re-released
W
hile director Peter Jackson is in New Zealand
busy filming The Hobbit in 3-D, his third
entry into the world of Middle Earth returns
to select theaters in Louisiana and nationwide today.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King plays
tonight in its extended edition cut in Baton Rouge
and New Orleans. Skip whatever Peeping Tom type
activities you had planned tonight, and watch the
first part of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic trilogy in all its glory.
Look for show times in Regal and AMC theatres. S

E
ssence Music Festival has called New
Orleans home for over a decade, bringing
top artists in R&B, hip-hop, jazz and soul
together in a show-stopping event. The festival,
which started as a one-time event to celebrate
the 25th anniversary of Essence magazine, is
now in its sixteenth year. Last year, headliner
Janet Jackson fueled the fest to record-breaking
attendance, pushing past those previously set
in 2009 by Beyonce. Last year’s sellout also
required the creation of a waiting list for what is
now one of the hottest festivals in the country.
Headlining Essence 2011 this weekend are
superstars Mary J. Blige, Kanye West, Chaka
Khan, Macy Gray and Jennifer Hudson. One
of this year’s highlights is the reunion of R&B
sextet New Edition, performing together
for the first time in fifteen years to celebrate
the group’s 30th anniversary, and the late
addition of best-selling R&B artist Usher.
On Friday, July 1, the mainstage will feature
Usher, Charlie Wilson, Jennifer Hudson,
Fantasia and Boys II Men. Meanwhile at the
Superlounge, performers include Alexander
O’Neal and Cherrelle, Dwele, local legend 
