The month of May is one filled with hope, change and many blessings.
In our church, we celebrate moments of grace, such as First Communions, the Sacrament of Confirmation as well as the preparations for the

FAITH SHARING QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Adult: “In a challenge you face right now, what
will it mean to live the way of Jesus Christ?”
Child: “Name some ways you can imitate Jesus
when you are on the playground or on a sports
team?”
MARY OUR MOTHER
What a joy to remember that Mary is our Mother!
Since she loves us and knows our weakness, what
have we to fear?
—Saint Thérèse of Lisieux
FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE
The opening words of today’s Gospel are a
moving and consoling message by Jesus to his
disciples not to be troubled, to have faith in Him
and that He will prepare a place for them (and
us) in his Father’s house. We hear this reading
often at funeral liturgies but even as it consoles
it also challenges us. These words were spoken
at the Last Supper, a time pregnant with the
seismic events to come: his death and
resurrection. The comfort in knowing our
ultimate place in the life to come is meant to
strengthen his disciples (and us) for the often
difficult journey ahead. Faith in Jesus
encourages us to lead lives which example his
truth in our actions as disciples… actions which
ask that we be strong enough to stand in
opposition to those who seek only self
aggrandizement, not love of neighbor. These
moments are painful and difficult, but we are not
alone. Those gathered at the Last Supper would
all (except John) encounter resistance and
ultimately death for proclaiming the Good News
of Jesus Christ. Perhaps we don’t face death for
witnessing to our faith, but we mustn't shy away
from difficult encounters with those who do not
yet understand or believe in Jesus, the Prince of
Peace. When we adjust our self-evaluation, not
measuring our “success” but rather our effort;
appropriately inviting others lovingly into an
awareness of what it means to be a follower of
Christ. We each have gifts particularly our own;
our call is to discover them and accept that our
uniqueness is precious to our God from whom
they come. Our promised place in the Father’s
house sustains us in our life-long journey of ups
and downs.
GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK
Save water when washing your hands by wetting one hand, turning off the water, soaping
and then rinsing with a small stream of water.
JOB OPPORTUNITY
St. Catherine Church is looking for a part-time
evening receptionist. Must be bilingual (English/
Spanish) and bi-literate (English/Spanish), have
computer skills, clerical job experience and
great customer service skills. Those interested
can pick up an application in the parish office,
download it from our website (www.stca.org) or
the Diocesan website (www.dsj.org). Application must be submitted by May 30th to the parish office.
FROM THE DESK OF FR. MARK
CONTINUED......
small mountainous communities. We, in the midst of
our own drought, understand the importance of water
and its life giving blessings and with many parishioners
from St. Catherine, St. Mary in Gilroy and other
parishes throughout our Diocese, we are answering
these prayers in the discipleship of Jesus Christ, “ I
was thirsty and you gave me something to
drink.” (Mt 25:35)
Our call to stewardship has over the past several years
also extended to Ghana Africa through the Awaso
Hope Project. Once more we are sending parishioners
to witness, through work and prayer, the blessing of
education and the hope given to families and their
children through our sharing of God’s treasures with
others. Fr. Paul Mensah is visiting us this month to
proclaim the Gospel of life and joy as he comes to
share with us the continued growth and progress of the
Awaso Hope Project.
Through this mission we are responding to the call of
our Lord Jesus Christ to, “Go into all the world and
proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.” (Mk
16:15) These actions of stewardship, of sharing from
the abundance of God’s gifts with the world, are our
call to respond with active prayer as sons and
daughters of God.
As your pastor, I thank you for your continued support
of these two vital and life giving missions and for your
continued generosity in helping to grow our missionary
spirit as a Catholic Church in Morgan Hill.
In other news, the Bishop McGrath has assigned Fr.
Roberto Gomez to St. Martin Parish in Sunnyvale as
the administrator. It has been only one short year but
Fr. Roberto will be moving on. Fr. Andrey Garcia will
be joining us as parochial vicar in July. Please pray for
all the priests that will be changing parishes and
assignments this year.
God Bless,
Fr. Mark
Welcome!
Our warmest welcome to all who
celebrate with us, whether long-time residents
or newly arrived in the parish. We thank God
for you. If you are not registered, please fill out
this form and place it in the collection basket or
mail it to the parish office.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
LITURGY WORSHIP
EASTER JOY: We are continuously blessed at St.
Catherine Parish. As I keep thinking back to the Easter Vigil, April 19th, when we welcomed 19 Elect and
Catechumens, Adults and Children into the Catholic
Church, and forward to Saturday, May 3rd, when 44
students received the Sacrament of Confirmation, and
to the celebrations during the month of May when our
Children will receive Communion for the first time, we
actually join together in the journey of faith with the
risen Christ.
Memorial Day was first observed on May 30, 1868, when
flowers were placed at the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers. On this day we honor all who have died in
service of our nation.
A PRAYER FOR MEMORIAL DAY
Remember, Lord, the fallen Who died in fields of
war, In flaming clouds, in screaming crowds,
On streets that are no more, That we today might
waken And greet this day in peace
With grateful prayer for those who bear
The storms that never cease.
Remember friends and strangers,
And those forgotten now,
Whose names are known to you alone,
Before whose love we bow
And ask that you surround them
With mercy’s endless light
That they may live, and we forgive
The foe they went to fight.
Someone invited or helped each one of these people
to strengthen their faith in the Catholic Church and
they said yes to the invitation and encouragement.
The Catholic faith is a great gift. We need to cherish
this gift. It is our greatest treasure, and it comes from
God. We do not keep this gift of faith to ourselves because we are called to share with other people. We
are called to be EVANGELIST.
How do we share our faith with other people? We can
invite people to join our family at St. Catherine Parish,
or we can help members of our family to complete all
initiation sacraments (Baptism, First Communion and
Confirmation), or we also can bring other people to
Jesus so that they can receive the gift of salvation.
People are waiting to be invited to join our faith. Do
you have someone in mind? Do you have the courage
to invite them?
Our R.C.I.A (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) program welcomes new members each year. Let us
share with our friends, relatives and neighbors this
great gift of faith. For more information, please contact
Deacon Phil Flowers, 1-408-779-3959, [email protected], or Fr. Lieu Vu, 1-408-779-3959,
[email protected].
LECTOR: Are you interested in furthering your prayer
life by proclaiming God’s word at Mass? There will be
training for those who would like to become Ministers
of the Word (Lector) in June. Please contact Fr. Lieu
Vu at 1-408-779-3959, [email protected].
Remember, Lord, the living,
Who bear the pain of loss
- A death she died who stood beside
Her Son upon the cross.
Remember all your children
The dead and those who weep,
And make us one beneath the sun
Where love will never sleep.
FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER: We learn from this
weekend Gospel that Jesus Christ is going to prepare
a home for us. He is the way to the Father because
He is the truth and the life. The early Church grew
quickly because they were open to the prompting of
the Holy Spirit and ultimately into a real universal,
Catholic Church where all nations have their place
(Act. 6:1-7). Yes, indeed, in the Church we all are a
royal priesthood, an edifice of living stones .
(1 Peter 2:4-9).

DESDE EL ESCRITORIO DEL
PADRE MARK…
me
dieron
de
beber."
(Mt
25,35)

caigan una o dos partes más del Santo Rosario;
“M….a….m…á”. Y la madre se queda mirando
con ojos curiosos y responde: “¿…Q…u…é…?”
Nada.
Recen ustedes el Rosario bien, regular, o
mal…

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Go and announce the
Gospel of the Lord
Go in peace, glorifying
the Lord by your life
These two dismissals at Mass are options for
priests (or deacons) to say before the closing
song. They both are saying the same thing too,
although the second is a little more explicit. We
don’t come to Mass to hear the readings and
then say, “Huh, that was a nice reading,” and
then leave and go about our lives unchanged.
We are meant to take the message of the Gospel, the readings, and the homily, and apply it to
our everyday lives to improve who we are. We
announce the Gospel of the Lord by our actions, not by actually standing on a street corner
reciting Scripture. We glorify the Lord by being
loving, forgiving, compassionate, and serving.
We don’t glorify the Lord by just going to Mass,
and then continuing to live in sin without any
thought of changing. Living in sin, yet striving to
become better, to live better, to love better—
that glorifies the Lord.
I’m reading a book by Kyle R. Cupp—”Living by
Faith, Dwelling in Doubt.” It’s about Kyle’s life
as he struggles in faith and his moments of
doubt (which is probably like most of us). I’m
only a few chapters in, but his words inspire
and echo the teachings of the Church.
The Scriptures function fully as revelation when we reveal the love of
Christ in what we say and do.
Scripture means nothing if we do not try to learn
and live by them. So if you’re reading the bulletin during Mass, knock it off and pay attention.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Eastern Christians have no sacrament of
“confirmation,” but they have always had the custom of richly anointing the newly baptized in myron, or sacred chrism. They also give even infants
a taste of the Precious Blood, thereby doing away
with any notion of “First Communion” in later childhood.
In the West, although we too have an anointing
with chrism for the newly baptized, for centuries
we have normally reserved a second anointing for
the bishop, sometimes many years after baptism.
There are many reasons for this, not the least of
which is the fact that in early times the bishop was
the ordinary person to officiate at baptism, not the
presbyter (priest). The bishop did it all, from plunging the catechumens into the font, to pouring
chrism over them, to immediately celebrating the
Eucharist. When bishops began to cede some of
their ministry to the ranks of presbyters, they desired to maintain a strong relationship with baptism.
Thus it was decided that the solemn postbaptismal anointing, the laying on of hands, and
the prayer for the gifts of the Holy Spirit were to be
detached from infant baptism. So, to the present
day, we have two anointings after baptism: one by
the priest, and the other normally by the bishop.
By the fifth century, the word “confirmation” had
surfaced to refer to this second anointing.

THE WAY
In today’s Gospel reading we hear part of Jesus’ discourse at the Last Supper as reported
in the Gospel of John. “I am the way and the
truth and life,” Jesus assures his disciples. At
that time they did not understand what he
meant; they wanted easy answers. “Just
show us the Father,” Philip begged.
But the first and second readings show us
how the early church came to understand Jesus’ words. The amazing growth of the
church led them to select seven men to do
the works of service needed with so many
new members. The followers of Jesus had
grown in such numbers that Peter could exclaim in his Letter over the fact that Christ,
the “rejected stone,” was now the cornerstone on whom the salvation of all the world
rests.
Down to this present day, he is truly the way,
the truth, and the life.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
St. Catherine School News
STUDENT COUNCIL
Student Council elections were held last week
after a week of friendly campaigning. Rather
than have a very long assembly with multiple
candidates for each office give speeches, campaign speeches were videoed and each class
was able to watch them at their convenience.
SPORTS BANQUET
The Cougar Athletic Club will host a Sports Banquet on Thursday, May 22 for all St. Catherine
School student athletes and their families. In
addition to a great meal, a special speaker will
be featured. Awards will be given to the athletes as well. Congrats, Cougars, on a great
year!
The new slate of officers was not available for
the press deadline; however, the new officers
will be installed on Thursday, May 22 at 2:30
during a prayer service in the church. All are
welcome to join us!
Congratulations to all who ran for office! We are
delighted to have such strong interest in student
leadership.
Summer Math Camp—July 7-24
Third graders enjoyed a Native American Day
just before Easter. They were hands on at several stations including making dream catchers
(above) and grinding acorns (right).
PARENT TEACHER GUILD
(PTG)
The St. Catherine PTG is a wonderful support
group for the school. PTG holds monthly meetings to keep parents informed on key school issues, coordinates volunteers for a range of activities, organizes a variety of support and appreciation events, and raises well over $75,000
each year for the school. All St. Catherine parents are PTG members. Many thanks to the St.
Catherine 2013-2014 PTG board and members
for all they do! Welcome to our new PTG board!
St. Catherine School is offering a Summer Math
Camp for students entering grades 1-8. The three
week program will meet four days a week (Monday
through Thursday) July 7-24. Classes will be held
from 9:00 am-12:00 noon. The cost is $400 per student for all three weeks or $150 per week if the student will attend only one or two weeks. Extended
Care will be available.
Grades will be clustered into three groups: 1-3, 4-6,
and 7-8. Instruction will be tailored to the specific
needs of the students in the class, while also emphasizing the development of number sense, basic
facts and real world applications as appropriate for
each grade level. Students will use technology,
hands on learning, collaboration, projects and pen
and pencil activities to deepen their understanding of
mathematics, with lots fun thrown in for good math
measure.
This program will meet the needs of those students
who are recommended or required to do additional
work in math this summer. Registration forms are
available on the website or in the school office.
Please contact Fabienne Esparza with any questions.
