To all in the Uplands Community, By the time you receive this
To all in the Uplands Community, By the time you receive this newsletter, our Year 13 Graduation will be underway! Over 200 students, parents, staff members and board members will be attending the Graduation Ceremony and Dinner which is being held at the E&O Hotel in Georgetown a very fitting location for the finale of our Senior Students grand farewell. I look forward to sharing some “live” updates from the event through our Uplands Facebook
https://www.facebook.com/uplands.school/ and Twitter https://twitter.com/ispuplands
feeds. Though the term and school year is rapidly drawing to a close there is still a lot of learning taking place throughout the school. This includes the teachers also continuing to learn and investigate. This week Uplands hosted an Apple workshop for staff from Uplands and GEMS International school. There has also been an opportunity for staff to test a range of ChromeBooks (Laptops configured to Google and their apps) as we continue to explore the uses of Google Drive and Google Classroom. Many parents will now be aware that Google Classroom is now commonly used in many Uplands classes for the setting, collection and marking of work. For those of you who wish to know more about Google Classrooms, we will be holding a series of workshops during the next academic year as we introduce our new school learning platform SEQTA and how we will be using this and Google products to enhance communication between school, students and parents and the ability for all to collaborate in a secure online environment. Have a fantastic weekend. Yours sincerely, Matthew Bristow Principal Today, the finale of the International Baccalaureate programme examination session takes place, which will most likely be followed by some hearty cheers and sighs of relief from our hardworking students. To honour the efforts of the current cohort we will be celebrating with a Graduation Dinner at the E & O Hotel this evening. It will be the culmination of their time at Uplands and as IB students as they become Uplands Alumni Class of 2016. Having assisted students with their deliberations, letters and recommendations for postsecondary education I feel a great attachment to and excitement for their future. We wish you all the best as you travel to all corners of the globe to further your education. Continue to make us proud, and lead into the future. End of Year Exams Following closely behind the graduating class, are the Year 10s and 12s. They will be sitting endofyear internal examinations from May 23rd to May 27th. All students have received, via their Uplands email account, a copy of the exams timetable. There will be no timetabled classes during the week for the Year 10s and 12s and they will only need to be on campus for their exams. Please note that if students only have a morning exam they can study at home in the afternoon. Likewise, if they only have an afternoon exam, they can study at home in the morning. However, if they have both a morning and afternoon exam on the same day, they will not be able to leave the school campus inbetween exams. Year 12 students will be allowed to leave during their lunch break as per usual. These exams are extremely important as the results will allow the students to identify their strengths and weaknesses at the halfway point of their two year programmes. Apple Creative Educator Academy
The students are not the only ones that continue to push their limits and challenge themselves. This week, Uplands hosted Apple, and fellow teachers from GEMS Academy, for an Creative Educator Academy. Across two days our faculty members furthered their understanding of the use of the iPad in the educational setting, creating a flexible learning environment and the keyresearch based ideas on creating educational content for our technologicallyminded students. Many thanks to Mr. Aznan Nagor and Mr. Phil Macoun for arranging and facilitating this opportunity for our staff. Wishing you a wonderful weekend, Bill Mitchell Acting Head of Secondary Page 2 Thank you to the many parents, staff and children who contributed to the success of our Summer Fair on Saturday. To be successful in Graphic Products requires the ability to be creative and practical at the same time, which is a difficult balance to achieve. This year’s students put in long hours, often on the weekend, to finish their projects and should be proud of what they have achieved. I have enjoyed working with them, and wish them all the best in their exams. Phil Macoun DT Teacher Page 12 After a successful charity month of fundraising for Stepping Stones Centre, where we raised over MYR3500, two students from each Year 8 tutor group accompanied me to the Centre to present this money to Aini, the centre’s director and get a chance to see how the workcentre functions. The students enjoyed the chance to taste homecooked pineapple rolls, help package the homemade ecosoap produced at the centre, as well as trying weaving and batik; crafts used in the process of the centre’s homemade products. Stepping Stone Centre is a part of Asia Community Service's Support Centre for Community Living project, which provides a work place for people with special needs. To see firsthand how everything works and is made at the centre was a wonderful experience for our students. Using the knowledge we gained, we then set out to sell as many of their items as possible at the annual UPTA Summer Fair. There we sold over MYR400 of goods. We will continue to sell items until the end of term so do look out for us selling after school and on speech day and support this good cause by making a purchase from us. Please read below for some poignant and thoughtful reflections from the students who accompanied me: “ Our experience at Stepping Stones was both enjoyable and educational. We learned many things, such as people with disabilities are still able to perform challenging tasks. … the products they were able to produce were amazing, in my opinion, better than those in factories, as at Stepping Stones everything is handmade with recycled materials. At first, on the bus we were not aware of what we were going to experience, but it turned out to be an extraordinary trip and we are extremely glad we went, as we definitely enjoyed our time with the disabled adults. They were all very kind, humble, and giving. It is a wonderful thing to see someone with a disability focus on their abilities, and we are sure this experience is going to stay with us for a long time.” Julianne, Ella “I enjoyed helping them and got to experience their lifestyle for half a day. Thank you helping us students truly understand charity and I hope we can have more amazing trips like this soon.” Cassandra “People at the stepping stone centre are friendly and patient. They make cloth that they dye themselves. They also make different kinds of soaps from oil. They also make delicious pastries. The also create paintings on paper that they make from the fiber of coconut trunk. It was a great experience and I also learned from them how to sew cloth! “ Benedict Lynsey Collis Head of Years 8 & 9 Page 13 Page 14 PENANG JUNIOR TAEKWONDO CHAMPIONSHIPS Last Sunday Uplands played host to the 10th edition of the Penang Junior Taekwondo Championships. With students from many different schools it was a fantastic opportunity for students from our evergrowing Taekwondo Club here at Uplands to test themselves in competitive sparing. Uplands came away with a whole host of individual successes, with some incredible skills, coordination and bravery being shown. As a school team, Uplands finished as Runners Up in the Secondary Section and Champions in the Primary Section. Well done to all involved and a particular mention to Master Guna and his team for putting on what was a wonderful day. Page 15 PRIMARY FOBISIA GAMES The past four months has seen 42 of our Primary School students working incredibly hard preparing themselves for the rigours of the Primary FOBISIA Games. Early morning Swimming and Athletics sessions alongside afternoon Football and TBall have taken place every week. All have shown incredible commitment to their team and we wish the every success next week as they travel to Kuala Lumpur.
We will do our best to keep our Twitter page updated with stories of the teams’ progress in KL. Our students travelled to Kolej Matrikulasi, Kepala Batas, to play their matches. This year we congratulate Omar for making the 2016 MSSM Team (representing Penang State), and Darren, Will, Cassandra and Rachel for winning the Bronze medals respectively in their U15 Boys’ and Girls’ Doubles events. The U12 event will be played on Monday 23 May 2016. Page 17 Over the weekend, the boarding house was again buzzing with activities. On Saturday morning all students headed down to the UPTA fair at Uplands in which they helped run a very successful dodgeball tournament. Over 100 students came through the sports hall to play, raising almost MYR300 for charity. Our students were excellent in making sure everything was run to schedule and that spotprizes and sweets were distributed to those involved. Afterwards we had an enjoyable sprint back to the boarding house, trying to avoid the torrential rain. After drying off we all met in the common room to play 'so you think you can cook'? The night’s challenge was to make pizza from scratch. Plearn started off well, but unfortunately lost marks on the lack of cooking time. Pip also tried his best with the rolling pin and artistically it looked like it was in the shape of Italy, so it was a good effort. Charlie, the wild card, created a masterpiece, although afterwards told us his mum was a chef. Gilbert also proved himself as a strong competitor producing an appealing pile of dough and cheese. Overall, Towa was given top marks, with Miguelle, Aniqah and Soon Aun given A+ respectively, for the amount of toppings they fitted on their pizzas. We spent the rest of the evening in the gym and swimming pool working off all the cheese we had consumed! On Sunday, we headed off to Gurney to spend some much needed downtime watching movies and shopping! Ruby Marshall Residential House Parent Page 18 Last week’s Summer Fair was very much enjoyed by all. Thank you so much to all the volunteers who helped out, from Country Reps, to the Teachers, Parents, Students and Staff who make Uplands such a special community. We are still counting, but think we have raised around MYR7000 towards our next School gift surprise for 2017, also helping volunteers to raise over MYR2200 for various charities. Suggestions for the School gift item(s) are welcomed by all, before voting upon at our next coffee morning or pizza evening, to be advised.
