President’s Message
Thanks to everyone responsible for making
the Citrus Sale a success!
From the
fantastic team of Allison Pohlkamp, Laura
Geuther and Dana Hastings to the
volunteers who worked the sale and made
reminder calls, great job! We saw a nice
increase in sales which will help PTSA
continue support our children. Thank you!
This year Bay High PTSA is proud to honor
two very worthy members, Laura Geuther
and Diane Frye at the Founder’s Day
celebration.
Laura has been a very active Bay High PTSA
volunteer for the past 10 years; she has
served as president of the unit twice. Laura
helped launch the 1st ever Homecoming
Cookout fundraiser and co-chaired it for 4
years. In addition, she co-chaired the Citrus
Sale for the 10 years, served as Council
Delegate for several years, Recording
Secretary for 2 years and Directory Chairperson for more years than we can recall.
Laura’s youngest son will be graduating
from Bay High this spring so Laura, too, will
be leaving Bay High PTSA. Her departure
will leave a great void in Bay High PTSA and
she will be missed by all!

fortunate to have such a dedicated and
hard-working member. Diane’s youngest
son is graduating this spring but Diane is not
quite through with PTA. She has signed up

Updates from the Principal
Jason Martin
The period of time
since February 27th,
2012, and the tragedy
at Chardon High
School has certainly
impacted the Bay
High School community, as well as
schools throughout
the country.
The
sobering reality that no
community is immune to such tragedy
became increasingly apparent when this
event occurred so close to home.
The Bay Village Schools takes the safety of
our students very seriously and works to
review and update our safety plans on an
annual basis. We are in constant
communication with the local police and
fire departments and work collaboratively
in an attempt to prevent such tragedies
from occurring. On March 21st, 2012, we
will spend the day practicing lock down
procedures at Bay High School with the
police department present. Members of
the BVPD will attend our staff meeting that
evening to offered additional suggestions
and field questions from our staff.
The high school has a crisis response team
that works to keep our procedures
current. Detective Kevin Krolkosky, of the
BVPD, serves as a member of this team and
provides valuable insight to our staff
regarding current best practices. Our crisis
response plan has been updated for this
year and will be further updated based
upon feedback from our March 21st event.
Many of you have heard that the alleged
shooter tweeted that he was going to bring
a gun to school. This is where we need your
help and the help of your student. Please
speak with your child about the importance
of reporting any concerns he/she may have
regarding school safety. This could be
anything from talk an act of violence, to
drugs in school, to talk of a friend wanting
to hurt him/herself.
The Bay Village Schools takes the
safety of our students very seriously
On a lighter note, many of the students
have responded with great compassion for
their peers at Chardon. We have spent the
last week making cards and posters to be
sent to Chardon. I am very proud of the
students who showed this initiative and
leadership. In many ways I feel this event
has brought the Bay High School student
body closer together.
We will continue to be diligent in our efforts
to provide a safe learning environment for
your child. We ask for your assistances and
welcome your involvement. Please feel
free to contact me at (440) 617-7402 should
you have any questions or concerns.

Common Core Standards in Bay Village
The Common Core is a state driven, national
initiative that is creating a common set of
curriculum expectations across 45 states. Each
state is responsible for tweaking this curriculum
to fit the needs of its education program. Over
the next three years, the Bay Schools will be
In 2014-2015 students will be
taking new end of year/course
assessments
transitioning to this new curriculum. What you
will notice in the classroom is: more time spent
on a topic with fewer topics covered in a year, a
focus on applying knowledge to new situations
or real world problems, a variety of
opportunities for students to show mastery of
content, connections being made across
content areas, and an emphasis on reading for
information and the requirement to read and
write across the curriculum. There will also be
a shift in the way Ohio assesses student content
knowledge. In 2014-2015 students will be taking
new end of year/course assessments. This will
be in two parts, a performance assessment that
will ask the students to apply knowledge to real
world research or problems and a web- based
assessment that will ask students to answer
questions on content which may include
watching a video clip or doing an interactive
activity before answering the question.

education. Some of the advantages
to membership include:

planners, and fund special programs
and speakers at Bay High School.
 Your involvement will reinforce to your

education is during these important
high school years.
 Your PTSA membership card entitles
you to discounts at selected online
