“Welcome to the only college prep school
that is based on the history and traditions
of the United States Marine Corps. The
Marine Military Academy prides itself on
instilling the core values that are cherished
by Marines – honor, courage, and
commitment – in our corps of cadets. We
develop disciplined, morally strong,
college ready young men who are
prepared for responsible leadership.
The proof is in our product. This past year,
our graduates have been accepted – many
with scholarships – to the most prestigious
colleges and universities in the world,
including the United States Military
Academy , Auburn, Baylor, the University
of Texas, Texas A&M, and many, many more.
All of our graduates were accepted to
institutions of higher learning.
The Marine Military Academy adheres to
a higher standard in virtually every
discipline than do comparable schools.
Physical fitness is a priority, and physical
training is performed as a battalion event

at least three times a week. Every cadet
participates in an extracurricular activity,
ranging from football to the drill team. We
have equal pride in our academics, which,
while stressing the basics, have some of the
most modern facilities and techniques in
the country. We purposely keep class size
down to encourage individual attention,
and most classes have a student teacher
ratio of 12 to 1. And we have a broad range
of courses, to include Mandarin Chinese.
Through our dual enrollment program
cadets can earn college credits at no
additional expense. And cadets have the
chance to obtain their pilot’s license - or
higher certifications - through our dynamic
Marine Military Academy Air Wing
program.
One of the beauties to MMA is that we are
co-located with a major airport, serviced
by both Continental and Southwest
Airlines. We are a short 1 hour flight from
Houston. We welcome visitors to our
beautiful 142 acre campus near Harlingen,

What It’s All About: MMA Corps of Cadets Academic Awardees 2010
At the beginning of each academic semester, Marine Military Academy recognizes cadets for
outstanding academic performance demonstrated in the prior semester. Cadets earning a second
semester GPA of 3.75 or above for Academic Year 2009-2010 receive honors and placement on
the President’s List. Cadets with a second semester GPA for Academic Year 2009-2010 between
3.50 and 3.74 receive honors and placement on the Dean’s List. Cadets receiving a Gold Wreath
are on the President’s List for the first time with a GPA of 3.75 or above, and cadets receiving a
Silver Wreath are on the Dean’s List for the first time with a GPA between 3.5 and 3.74. Those
receiving a Gold Star have been on the President’s List for two consecutive semesters, and those
receiving a Blue Star have been on either the President’s or Dean’s list for two consecutive
semesters. Those earning recognition for their second semester’s academic performance were

The Academy Dean’s Academic Address 2010

“As we move towards the close of the First Quarter, I want to take a moment to
review the importance of Academics at the Marine Military Academy and some of
the recent successes of our cadets. This is not just a whim that struck without
inspiration…I have the pleasure of teaching an entry level mathematics course
this year and I am struck by the monumental challenges faced by many of our new
cadets. There is no doubt that all of our cadets have the aptitude for success...the
reality many face however, is that they are ill prepared upon initial entry into the
Academy for true college preparatory work. Once they have been a Marine Military
Academy cadet, and have embraced the values of the Academy, they begin to
realize success in every aspect of their lives. There is no doubt that their success
has been the result of a combination of great aptitude and countless hours of
hard work. The mentorship of peerless Drill Instructors and faculty working

within a proven system played a role as well. Last, but certainly not least, their
Dean
Director, Business Affairs parents should be commended for unwavering support for their cadet and the
Academy.
The Academic Department’s role in creating this environment where young men grow into disciplined,
morally strong, college-ready individuals who are prepared for responsible leadership forces faculty and
staff to break from the modern paradigm of education where success is measured by a state mandated
standardized test and average daily attendance. The Academic Department does not simply rely on
chalkboards, student desks, and textbooks to succeed in our mission. We move beyond hallway banners
proclaiming that “All students can succeed!”. Faculty model and reinforce the Core Values which are so
successfully introduced to the cadets by the military staff and challenge each cadet to extend their
performance beyond the limits of normal students.
Academics at the Marine Military Academy are grounded in the core disciplines of English, Mathematics,
Social Science, Science, and Foreign Language. All electives available to students outside of these disciplines
are focused on skills necessary in today’s work and academic environments. Marine Military Academy
cadets are challenged by Advanced Placement courses, Dual Enrollment courses, and required additional
study within the core to ensure that they have the knowledge necessary to be successful in any post
secondary envir onment. Much more important than this knowledge, however, is their complete
transformation into responsible learners, informed citizens, and practiced leaders.
In addition to our recent National Honor Society officers and new inductees, the cadets of the Marine
Military Academy have demonstrated their ability to excel in the following ways:
•All 46 of last year’s graduating seniors earned admission to 4 year colleges/universities. Acceptances of note
are: United States Military Academy, Texas A&M University, University of Texas, Trinity University, Auburn
University, and Norwich University.
•Calculus, Physics, Statistics, and Chemistry Advanced Placement students exceeded the State standards for
qualifying scores on the Advanced Placement exams. Those cadets enrolled in English III Dual Enrollment
and English IV Dual Enrollment chose to challenge the Advanced Placement Exams for English and exceeded
all expectations by improving on the Academy’s historically outstanding performance. The Academy cadets
had a total of 43 qualifying scores on the various AP exams.
•Thirty-three cadets earned a total of 99 college credit hours through Dual Enrollment in 2009-2010. The
Academy has an agreement with TSTC to allow MMA cadets admission into all available technical certification
programs beginning with the Spring 2010 semester and an improved Dual Enrollment program agreement
with the University of Texas Brownsville.
•The Mandarin Language program now includes Mandarin III. The Chinese A
Language program continues to develop and gain interest from our cadets.

“Cadet Smith has grown by leaps and bounds since
starting here last year as an 8th grader. He came back
this year and immediately took over as the Police Sergeant
for the Bottom Deck without anyone assigning him to
those duties. It should be no surprise that the bottom deck
has passed every inspection with flying colors. Cody has
worked hard to improve his academics, and his
appearance is impeccable. I’m proud of Cody for his
willingness to assert himself and move into increasing
roles of responsibilities. Now he needs to stop looking
and acting so much like Justin Biebers! Congratulations
Cody. You have worked hard and most certainly deserve
this recognition. Keep up the good work.”

part in helping guide me along the narrow path of success all the way from dropping my habits of being a follower in to

Platoon. Also this year I have challenged myself academically by taking both English II Honors and U.S. History
Advanced Placement (AP). Last year - my first year here at
the Academy - I worked hard in the barracks as a squad
leader and tried hard to keep up my grades. In addition,
last year I was also a member of the Drill Team, and I
worked hard to learn the skills required to succeed in both
parades and in competition.”

asked what it means to be a cadet. This will be my fourth year
here at MMA. When my father first told me I was going to MMA
I will be honest and frank - I was against it. However, now that
this is my senior year I can’t tell you how many times I have talked
to my friends from back home and they have told me how they
were dropping out of school and getting a job. When I first came
here I struggled all of my first year with my academics, there was
a point in time when I was failing all six of my classes. After I
adjusted to the study schedule and being disciplined enough to
actually put forth the effort and time to study I have been doing
great academically.

LEADERS AND MMA BATTALION STAFF
During a recent visit to MMA President BGen Cheney by Association of Military Colleges
and Schools (AMCSUS) leaders, MMA Battalion Staff were invited to join the group for
lunch and a unique hour of fellowship. AMCSUS is comprised of a group of schools
(college preparatory schools; two-year colleges; colleges and universities) which provide a
quality education in a military environment with emphasis on strong values, leadership
development, citizenship, and service to others. BGen Cheney serves as Counsellor on
AMCSUS’ Executive Committee, and the Academy has been a member of AMCSUS for
several years.
In conclusion, The Marine Military Academy is a unique school
to go to. Out of all the teenage boys in the country not many have
to endure the things we go through day after day. Yes, at times it
was hard. I didn’t want to be here. However, being here and
sticking it out until the end has given me a great sensation of
accomplishment. I know that leaving here with all of the skills that
I have obtained over the past four years will help me out for the
rest of my life. That’s what it means to me to be a cadet at MMA.”

MMA Admissions Recruiter Jim Poe
Scoutmaster, Boy Scouts of America - MMA Troop 22
Besides bringing MMA top-notch cadets from all facets of the globe each and
every year, Jim Poe’s name is nearly synonymous with MMA’s Troop 22
Boy Scouts of America. For the past 10 years - week nights, weekends and
holidays - you’ll find Jim out and about, assisting young Scouts with project
planning and completion, chaperoning and cooking up a storm during overnight
campouts, you name it...if Troop 22 has signed on to do something Jim will
be right in there amongst them! When asked why he signed on as Troop 22
Scoutmaster Jim replies, “I really want to see the Boy Scout program maintained
here at the Academy. We have one of the largest troops in the Rio Grande Valley
and that says a great deal about our cadets.” Jim’s eyes light up as he continues,
“One of the most profound personal experiences for me is witnessing the drive
and dedication from a handful of boys who attain Eagle Scout ...that ranking does
NOT come easily. And there’s humor! One of the funniest experiences I’ve enjoyed
as Scoutmaster was seeing the delight and reaction in a young scout who just
caught his first fish! My long term goal is to provide a rewarding program for those
boys who willingly give their time to participate in Scouts.” Shine on, Troop 22, and

When Terry and Sarah Brown arrived at Marine Military Academy to enroll
their son, Cody, for his 8th grade year way back in Fall ‘07, little did Terry
know he’ld be seeing quite a bit of the Academy’s hallways a couple years
later... almost as frequently as Cody! Says Terry, “ Cody and public school did
not mix well, and we came to MMA looking for a positive, structured environment
where Cody could excel. I served MMAPO originally in the V.P. position, and I
became President by default when the current President did not return to MMA.
I’m very excited about the position and have a great MMAPO leadership team
to support me. My goals this year are to get more parents involved, reach out
and communicate better with international parents in particular. We’re using
Facebook, e-mail, and the internet to aid communication with parents, and all
of our communications are in both English and Spanish. We’re working on
producing a parents’ directory, too. What intrigues me most about MMA
personally is that the program provides opportunity for young men excel to
their maximum potential. Both my wife and I are ex-militar y, live in Houston.
Our older son attends Midwestern State U. Sending Cody to MMA was the
hardest thing we’ve done so far, but we are so proud of his all ‘round success!”

(MMA) newest hire, Allen Aleshire. Allen brings the world of Facebook, Twitter, You Tube and over 34 years of ‘hands on’ schoolbased media development and delivery experience to the MMA Team. Before arriving at MMA, Allen served as Director of Public
Information/KHGN TV/Web Services with Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District.
MMA is taking full advantage of Allen’s vast knowledge of Web 2.0 technologies to connect with MMA Corps of Cadets, parents and
potential cadet candidates across the world…and you can be 100% certain Allen has spared nary a moment getting the MMA Team on
board the Facebook, Twitter and YouTube train. No one is exempt from ‘tweeting, tubing and Facebooking’, including MMA President
BGen Cheney, USMC (Ret) who was among the first at MMA to roll out a Facebook message to cadets’ parents attending MMA’s
Introductory Graduation Parade! Allen encourages each and every member of the MMA Team to connect to the various social media

Rear Admiral Joseph A. Horn, Jr., is a native of
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Audubon, New Jersey.
He graduated from the United States Naval Academy
in May 1980 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical
Engineering. Horn’s first duty assignment was in USS
Sampson (DDG 10). Subsequent sea duty assignments
include USS Robert G. Bradley (FFG 49), USS
Ticonderoga (CG 47), and USS Anzio (CG 68). He
commanded USS Stout (DDG 55) and USS Lake Erie
(CG 70). While in command of Lake Erie, the ship
conducted multiple successful ballistic missile
engagements and won the Spokane Trophy, two
Edward F. Ney awards, and two Battle ‘E’s. Horn has
deployed to the Mediterranean Sea, Arabian Gulf, Red
Sea, Indian Ocean, Eastern and Western Pacific, and
conducted extensive operations in the Caribbean and
Baltic Seas and Atlantic Ocean.
Ashore, Horn earned a Master of Science in Operations
Research from the Naval Postgraduate School and is a
Massachusetts Institute of Technology Seminar XXI
alumni. He has served on the Joint Staff (J8) and the
staffs of Joint Forces Command (J6), U.S. Fleet Forces
(N8), and OPNAV (N86). His previous assignment
was deputy director, Missile Defense Agency.
Horn’s personal awards include the Defense Superior
Service Medal, Legion of Merit (Two Awards), Defense
Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal
(Four Awards), Navy Commendation Medal (Two
Awards), and Navy Achievement Medal (Two Awards).

Colonel Edward E. Hammerbeck, U.S. Marine Corps (Ret), 89, passed
away May 1st at Goodwin House in Alexandria. Col Hammerbeck received
the Silver Star during the Korean War for his quick thinking during an air
reconnaissance mission. According to his Silver Star citation, as an air
observer aboard an unarmed, ill-equipped plane he spotted a large group of
enemy forces about to ambush a contingent of Marines. Then-Capt
Hammerbeck warned friendly troops below by writing a message in a
handkerchief weighted with bullets, dropping it from a open window during a
dangerous low pass. He then removed his boot and used his sock, weighted
with more bullets and another message, to drop to Marines below during a
second dive. Among other tours of duty, he later served as regimental commander and operations officer in Vietnam. Col Hammerbeck retired from the
Marine Corps in 1970 following 28 years of dedicated service.
