Some good systems.
Some poor to non existent systems.
Great ideas.
Poor compliance.
Extract DO’s and DO NOT’s.
The above was used in formalising Industry guidelines.
Thank you to all those companies and colleagues that
warmly welcomed us to talk and review LUEZ openly and
honestly.

• K&S - Monash University Accident Research Centre
(MUARC) – Report
 Essential Elements of a Best Practice System of Control
– Designated exclusion zones for the sole use of the forklift, or
other loading equipment, demarcated in a manner which is fit for
purpose for the nature of the loading environment;
– Designated driver safety zones located so that the driver is kept
away from the line of fire and can be kept under surveillance by the
forklift operator at all times;
– Clear and effective systems of communication between the
operator and the driver which are fit for purpose for the nature of the
loading environment and the equipment/vehicles involved;
– Effective methods of providing loading in progress
warnings to other operators, drivers, and pedestrians.
• K&S, AkzoNobel & BOC - Pilot Trials.

LUEZ
– Key Principles
LUEZ Journey
1. Separation of People and Equipment
– The greater the strength of separation the greater the control and the
less likelihood of an incident occurring.
2. Authority – Loading / Unloading
– Who should be in control?
– Who is best positioned to have control?
– Is the person able to assume responsibility of authority?
3. Line of Sight
– To be aware of the location of people at all times.
– Inquisitive nature of driver to be able to view and/or monitor loading /
unloading process.

LUEZ Journey
Everything that can be seen is seen only when
light from that object travels to our eyes.
LUEZ
- Variables
LUEZ Journey
Principles are dependent on a number of factors
including:
– the industry;
– the specific nature of the product/s;
– the types of vehicles used;
– the nature of the loading/unloading environment; and
– the size of the facility.

The green light provides a visual indication that the machine is safe to approach.
The green light activates when the forklift handbrake is applied (orange operational
lights turn off).
To ensure the driver is aware of the pedestrians presence it is to be used in
combination with eye contact & hand signals.
