Written by Wilbur D. Nesbit in 1907 and published by P. F. Volland in 1910, this is an excerpt from a longer poem in book form presented to me this Christmas by a dear friend. What more could we ask for or aspire to in the coming year of 2010 than a good friend or two? Let’s remind ourselves and others to renew and rekindle our friendships this year. When all else fails, there is nothing like a constant and true friend. Many of us are lucky enough to count the blessings of our dolls and our doll friends, also. Sharing a hobby with our friends can be a releasing and joyous thing. What good are the dolls if not Continued on Page 2... PAGE ONE from the director ...Continued From Page 1 shared? I wish you good dolls and good doll friends to spend time with this year. We hope you will consider us at the Doll Museum among those friends as we are here to share and enjoy with you. It is our purpose, our commitment, and our great joy to do so. The upcoming year is an example of the variety and breadth of interest that we strive to present to you, our members and visitors. With the end of the “Mint In Box” exhibit, where there was surely something for everyone, we concentrate on a single doll manufacturing company with our new exhibit opening on February 27, “Terri Lee and Family”! Tiny Terri Lee & Tiny Jerri Lee Terri Lee Sales Corp. Vinyl 1950s U.S. There are many reasons to attend and enjoy this special exhibit of dolls from the 1940s and 1950s, nostalgia and fashion being the first and foremost. Admittedly, this is a doll that many think had a narrow audience or market, but just the opposite was true. Come and see SMALL WONDERS why this doll and her extended family defied all odds in so many ways and remain very collectible still today! In the midst of this exhibit we are excited to announce that NADDA is returning to Seattle! Save the dates- April 17 and 18, 2010 at the Doubletree Inn in SeaTac for the National Antique Doll Dealers Association Salerooms. We look forward to welcoming you to the very best of doll shows. Make a weekend of it, call your friends, reserve your rooms now. Sales, Exhibits, Display, and More! It’s a doll lover’s dream. “The World Embellished: Lace” is our exciting Summer Exhibit in the Changing Gallery. We have often shown dolls dressed in lace, people’s clothing with lace trims, lace backdrops, and even had lace demonstrations, but we have never gone all out and shown an entire gallery filled with this worldwide and timeless favorite textile. I don’t know about you, but I love collecting lace; bolts of it to the tiniest fragment of a lovely handmade piece. I never get tired of just looking at it and imagining the person or people who bent over a particular work for many long hours, days, or years, turning a tiny nearly endless thread into a masterpiece to be cherished for generations. Join us May 22 – October 17, 2010. Happiest of New Years to you and yours, Rosalie Whyel, Director ...Continued From Page 1 weeks in our Changing Gallery room. Rosalie’s daughter, Roslyn, is lending her artistic expertise in helping to create some fun and lively dioramas for the dolls. If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about the very colorful history of these dolls, and those involved in creating and producing them over the years, this is your opportunity. You are in for a special treat! Onto another subject: You might be aware that the many reference books in the Museum’s resource library are available, by appointment, for review by museum patrons. The library has been undergoing a re-inventory with the information in the process of being added to a computer database. We are so grateful to museum docents Karen Griffiths and Anita Olson for all their hard work and everyone else who has helped. The library also includes many wonderful doll-related videotapes and DVDs, including “historical” Museum ones documenting our events and television appearances over a 17 year history, which we are now making available to borrow. A deposit/credit card to secure the item, refunded upon return, and $5 plus shipping fee is all that is required. Of course, if you are local and will be picking up the item, there are no shipping charges. Feel free to call or inquire at the Front Desk for a list of the available videotapes. SMALL WONDERS PAGE THREE SCHOOL VISITS Field trips to the Rosalie Whyel Museum of Doll Art are always a lot of fun-for both the students and the teachers! Kindergarten classes from The Bear Creek School in Redmond visited us once again in January for three days full of fun and education. The Museum’s codirector, Shelley Helzer, led the tours showing them how dolls are made and visiting displays that were directly related to the subjects they were learning about in class. A trip to the Japanese Friendship Doll case and the Girl’s Day display was especially fun as Shelley explained the significance of the dolls. An indepth discussion of the Cottage Industry of Germany and how differently children dressed just a century ago was met with wide eyes. After touring the Museum, the classes ended their visit in the Rose Room where they had hands on experience with antique dolls and toys. A big THANK YOU to the students and teachers of The Bear Creek School for visiting us and asking such great questions! N E W S DOCENT AAW WARDS 2009 We gratefully acknowledged and celebrated our wonderful Docents and Staff at our Annual Luncheon in early December. We were delighted to present awards for the compiled 630 hours of time our fifteen active docents so selflessly volunteered in the past year. They have served at the admissions desk, at Rosie’s Too, cataloging our library, sorting and pricing for our stores, aiding in the curatorial department, mending and cleaning doll clothes and linens, and keeping the drawers and displays in order. You can imagine we could never do what we do without them. We have docents as young as fourteen and some who have been with us since we opened our doors in Rosie’s Too Sale Saturday 11 to 4 March 27th, 2010 Our Sidewalk Sale at Rosie's Too on January 9th was very well attended.Thank you, loyal customers! BOOK REVIEW: THE PARISIENNES by FRANCOIS and DANIELLE THEIMER , new release. This is a book that could only be written by this earnest, dramatic, and dedicated couple, the Theimers of France. At once it is an art book, presenting some of the most beautiful works of two-dimensional art from the 15th-19th centuries. Each entry supports and refines the studious parts of this monumental work. It is historical, as many of you will know of Francois, he loves to present the political and social history behind the development of French dolls. His access to patent papers and drawings, beautifully reproduced within, his own fine collection of dolls and those of others worldwide, have all been utilized to convince and convey to doll lovers everywhere new information, new identifications, the French-German connection, the earliest evidence of the dolls he calls THE PARISIENNES and those that followed into the early 20th century. An inspiring work and one that will add broadly to our knowledge base, it is thrilling to read and difficult to either put down or resist jumping forward to see the effect of the causes Francois so deliciously divulges. If you have the first publication HURET, you’ll want to follow it with the research on a broad spectrum of dolls from the same era as well as added information on Hurets. Available in our Museum Store. Limited Editions: Only 500 in French and 500 in English printed worldwide. Call for yours Today! Volume 1 & 2 available for $449.
