Wild at UICOMP Ready for the next adventure
2016 Staff Appreciation Week
April 18 – April 22
Wild at UICOMP
Ready for the next adventure
Dear UICOMP staff,
Thank you for all that you do to help UICOMP accomplish its mission to “Lead Collaboration to Improve
Health.” Together we are improving health through education, research and patient care/community
service.
Our campus will be forever changed by the addition of first year medical students. We are working hard
to create new curriculum, recruit additional faculty and reconfigure existing space so that we can
accommodate our new students. I believe this is the most significant event in the history of our
campus. We are doing all of this while still striving to deliver exceptional education to our existing
students and residents. We realize that the next year will create new challenges for our staff – we
will be engaged in construction which will make A200-2 unavailable and will make major changes in the
second floor B wing. However, in the end we will have a great new technology rich class room and a
new anatomy lab.
Our research programs continue to grow with increasing numbers of publications and with several new
grants. Our clinics, hospitals and faculty continue to provide excellent patient care. We continually
examine how to integrate our patient care/teaching missions with the strategic goals of our hospital
partners. Our residencies are training tomorrow’s doctors and helping to address the physician
shortages in downstate Illinois.
There are challenges. Last year I complained about the declining State budget. This year, I just wish that
there was a budget! We are all working extremely hard to meet both personal and UICOMP goals
despite the restrictions imposed by a tight budget.
Thank you so much for all the effort you put into helping UICOMP fulfill its mission. Particular thanks to
the Civil Service Council for their advocacy for UICOMP employees.
Sara L. Rusch, M.D., MACP

kind, no matter what the present circumstance, is appreciated by all who pass her way! Thanks, Judy,

the effort given by each of you to maintain this mobile clinic. We appreciate your sacrifices- the early

to at the end of the day. Even if our clients don’t say it, they appreciate your efforts, too.

To Laureen, Kristi, Adam and Dennis,
I’ve now been Regional Dean for over eight years. Each year the Dean’s office staff has assumed new
responsibilities. We’ve seen changes in hiring requirements, additional required on line modules that
our office tracks to assure faculty completion, increased number of promotion packets, visa challenges,
research services support, increased compliance demands and the sometimes never ending number of
meetings to schedule.
Your response to this ever increasing demand has been exemplary. The focus always is on how to get
things done or what can we do to get this through the system. The attitude is uniformly positive and
your friendly and supportive interactions with the many people who visit or call my office helps build the
reputation of the school and support our mission.
Thank you so much for all that you do. Your hard work, teamwork, and support are what enable me to
do my job.
- Sara Rusch MD (Regional Dean)

Dear Academic Affairs Staff: Joellyn, Valerie, Loni, Sandy, Judy, Stephanie, Courtney, Mary Jean, Lois,
Roxanne, Bonnie
The UICOMP is going through some exciting times - the expansion of the campus along with curricular
transformation!! None of this exciting work would be possible without the dedication and commitment
of excellent staff like you. All of you make the work that we do exciting in the face of challenges; fun
and truly rewarding in face of limited resources.
As I reflect on the year 2015, I am amazed and extremely proud of your accomplishments - coordinating
innovative curricula such as intern prep course and longitudinal skills course; enhancing simulation
education for M2 students; coordinating wellness and great social events for students; continuing to
work on innovative assessment and testing; implementing and working with new technology for
assessment and logistics; making events such as Celebration of excellence and Research day memorable;
providing guidance on various CME efforts!! (Just to name a few). I know that these are all
accomplished while still continuing to manage what you already do on various curricular logistics,
registration and sometimes some mundane work that just needs to get done.
Our students are very lucky to have dedicated staff that care for them and work with them to make
them successful. I have no doubts that we will be able to accomplish great things here in Peoria with
your support and commitment. We look forward to working with each and every one of you as we
prepare to welcome a new group of M1 students in 2017!!
You are the best and I am glad to be part of your team.
Best Wishes

For Jackie Laredo:
Jackie, I would like to thank you for you. You are so friendly, warm, approachable, organized, and so very
awesome overall. You often go above and beyond in your attitude and work, and you are truly a huge
asset to our division. We have grown to heavily rely on you for pretty much everything. You are also a
true friend and always offer a kind word and a listening ear. When our residency program didn’t have a
coordinator for a time this past fall, you stepped up and stepped into an area that was outside your level
of comfort, an area you had little experience in. You handled role with a great attitude and did a
phenomenal job in an area you were not trained in or had any experience in. You handled all the
nuances of this new role, seeking help when you needed and not once was it evident that you hadn’t
been doing this for years!
You do all of this with perfect grace and a big smile. I love working with you!
- Bhavana Kandikattu, M.D., F.A.A.P (Dept. of Pediatrics)
For Christy Vincent:
In this short time you have worked here, you have won the hearts of so many with your upbeat and
friendly attitude. You stepped into an unfamiliar role and very quickly wrapped your arms around it and
‘took off running’. You came to us during an extremely busy time of the year and didn’t miss a step as
you embraced this new role. Your organizational skills, friendly and warm nature are a few of your
several wonderful assets. I have grown to heavily rely on you and trust you.
I love working with you!

To Erica Duffy… I am so thankful for the friendship we have developed over the past four years. You are
my sounding board when I have a problem (especially in Epic) and my therapist when I am having a bad
day (at home or at work). You let me vent when a patient, parent, or another co-worker does
something that makes me want to pull my hair out (without judging me), and you are my diet buddy,
reminding me that having that extra piece of cake at the going away party probably isn’t a good idea. I

To all the hard working nurses at Pediatric Subspecialty…Thank you for all you do for our families and

get the recognition you deserve and your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed, I promise! Our clinic wouldn’t
be able to function without you.
- Aimee Oliver
To all the support staff at Pediatric Subspecialty ( and anyone else I may have missed)…I’m sure it must
often feel that you go unnoticed and unappreciated, and that is unfortunate. I want you all to know that
you are a vital part of the smooth operation of our clinic and you are greatly appreciated. Some of you
help arrange special gatherings like retirement parties, birthday celebrations, and going away parties for
staff who are moving on to other opportunities and that means so very much to everyone in the office.

you!

you!
- Molly Hoffman, APN
