Tamkaliks Celebration (Pow Wow)
Tamkaliks is a three day celebration of traditional Native American culture. It is also a place and
time where local people can observe and learn about that culture and a bridge of friendship
between the former and present inhabitants of the Wallowa County. For three days we have
traditional Native American songs and dances. The traditional wear of the dancers is spectacular.
Outside the dance area we have 25-35 concessionaires selling food, Native American crafts and
other items. Along the river the participants camp during the pow wow, many setting up teepees.
The sight of teepees along the river after many years' absence is wonderful. On the last day of the
festival we have the friendship feast. The Native American community provides salmon, deer and
elk and locals bring pot luck dishes. For the deer and elk a group of Indians come early and
exercise their treaty rights by hunting for the game for the feast. A local committee prepares the
fish and game.

Tech Day – Spring 2016
Ken Kulack said: “Tech day at the Slovick's! Great turnout and lots of projects underway in the wonderful
shop! What a place! Thank you to Jane and John for hosting!”
There were 28 people signed up to attend. Most of them showed up and there were a few that
came that did not sign up. Projects: Greg Cannon installed a new set of lowering springs on his
2006, Fred Bernier installed a new cold air intake on his Black Beauty 2006, Red Fred did an oil
change and a coolant flush and replace, Jim Stevenson replaced his brake fluid, Richard Fesler
installed a new front license plate bracket on Joyces’ 2016. Several people washed and waxed
their cars, and several people had chips repaired by the chip man, Kevin trout. Eric the wheel
repair man showed up, but I don’t think anyone had wheel repairs done. John Slovick

19 cars and 27 people got together at the Eagle Home Depot for a Saturday drive up to Horseshoe Bend
and over to Lowman, down to Idaho City with a stop for lunch at Trudy’s and then back home to Boise.
We could not have asked for a better day, the sun was out the traffic was good, except for 1 van that was
extremely slow and would not pull over. The group was made up of Bob Swenson, Marv & Connie
Miller, Judy Thompson, Fred Bernier, John Slovick, Clancy & Julie Mininger, Tim & Judy Williams,
Greg Cannon, Pam Mackie, Mike & Barbara Hoyne, Dave Hansen, Steve & Beth Tarter, Rob & Jean
Reed, Angie (Jean’s mom), Dave Arthur & daughter Krista, Dennis Nicholls, Joyce Clark and Jim & Patti
Stevenson. We stopped in Horseshoe bend for a break and then went on to Danskin Station for a photo
op and on to Trudy’s. The staff and food at Trudy’s were great and life is good.
