sat before her on the field bleachers. “Hockey, soccer, baseball,
skydiving, bungee jumping, snowboarding – he loved to be active.”

(CSRT-SM) will be visiting 14 Wing Greenwood June 8 to conduct town hall meetings
with 14 Wing personnel on the status of
the CSRT-SM.
The town halls will be held in the Annapolis Mess at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and will
include a briefing by Whitecross followed
by time for questions. Maximum participation by military personnel is expected as
per the schedule below. Civilian members
of the defence team are invited to attend.

On the run
May 25 marked the sixth year sailors from HMCS Halifax stopped in Millville, south of Aylesford, to visit
with Children’s Wish Foundation Valley chapter volunteers, and enjoy a meal provided by Betty Hebb, seated
centre, and her son, Brian, at Farmer’s Family Diner. The sailors run from Sydney to Yarmouth, raising money
for the Children’s Wish Foundation to grant a wish to a deserving child. This stop earned them a $280 donation
from Hebb for their efforts, from fundraising she does each year between their visits.

the family’s fundraising effort
to almost $35,000 in their
fourth year. An annual ticket
auction and washer toss event
has allowed them to donate jerseys to Berwick Bruins hockey
and a youth volleyball team,
funds to the Kingston rink,
the Kentville skate park effort,
the Valley chapter of Kidsport
and more.

a pleasure to accept.
“We really appreciate what
everyone does for community
sports,” he said. “We’re all
volunteers, and just doing what
we can to keep kids involved.
When Karen called, we were
just so please. When the kids
saw the jerseys, their eyes were
popping out!”

Video effort on life as a military child recognized
A captivating video of 14
Wing Greenwood’s children,
and their role in a family that
stands out in meeting its professional military demands on
all members, has been recognized by Wing Commander
Colonel Iain Huddleston.
The “April is the Month of
the Military Child” initiative
ran for the second year at 14
Wing, under the patronage of
Huddleston’s wife, Amanda
Huddleston. Working with
the Military Family Resource
Centre and the Public Affairs
Office, technicians from 14
Wing Imaging interviewed a
handful of military children of
all ages on their experiences
moving from community to
community, starting new
schools and making new
friendships, and how they
help at home when their
parents are busy at work or
deployed.

The Atlantic Canada International Air Show organizing

to Summerside this August
22 to 23.

He referred back to the
2008 Canadian Forces health
and physical fitness strategy,
with its six pillars – including
the “essential to the CAF mission:” nutrition.
Guest speaker Angela Dufour, a Bedford-based sports
dietitian and author, added
another element to the importance of nutrition: its role
in supporting sound mental
health.
“I’m not preaching anything you don’t know,” she
said, “but this is the first time
I’ve been asked to speak to
such a motivated group.
“You’re talking about
pushing your bodies to the
limits: day-to-day, what are
those limits, and how much
fuel do we need to do it?”
She said people tend to eat

Steve Hatton is a brave man.
He’s deployed eight times in
his 25-year career with the
Canadian Armed Forces, including 565 days in Afghanistan on five tours between
2007 and 2013.
But his personal battle
with post traumatic stress
disorder has been even more
challenging, and he stood up
on two occasions in the past
few weeks among peers at
14 Wing Greenwood to share
his experience.
As a guest at a Mental
Health Week seminar, and
then the recipient of the
Healthiest Lifestyle Change
Award at the 14 Wing Fitness, Sport and Health Promotion Awards breakfast,
Hatton was pleased to have
his mother, father and wife in
the audience at the breakfast.
“If I waited” to get help, he
said, family, friends, career:
“none of that would be there
for me.”
They are among the “heroes” who supported him,
before and after a battle with
PTSD, along with the Canadian Armed Forces medical
team and health promotion
resources.
“I have received the most
excellent care and support –
but at what price?”
Hatton joined the Air Force
in 1990 and had a busy career in service. While his wife
and family members knew
something was wrong years
ago, it was upon his return
from Operation Attention
in 2013 his “world crashed
down.
“I wasn’t home 30 minutes, and I was angry with
my wife over nothing,” he
said. “This is the woman
I love, that I left for six
months. What was wrong
with me?”
Years’ worth of developing
the personality of an “emotional hard ass,” keeping his
“edge” even while grocery
shopping and denying anything was wrong with him
caught up with him.
“I was confrontational,
disconnected from my family, friends and colleagues;
there was no joy in any
milestones – I was just going
through the motions.”
The accumulation of deployment stress resulted in
his PTSD diagnosis that fall
– “ a sense of relief, but I was
shattered. I didn’t know what
to do. What would happen to
me? What about my career?
What about other people?”
He started medical treatment with dedication – and
his wife by his side. Two
years later, he recognizes
the value of the treatment he
received, but is an advocate
now for services to fill the
gap between his care, and
the support available to his
family.
“They were under duress
just as long as I was, and care
for them is just as important
as for me, a Canadian Armed
Forces member. The CAF has
come a long way, but there is
a long way to go.”
He pointed to CAF and
Health Promotion programs
available to members and
families on stress and anger
management and mental
health: “I continue to use the
tools I learned every day, and
I will for the rest of my life.
It takes a lot of time, effort
and dedication to complete
therapy - and it was worth it.”
Canada’s veterans’ ombudsman, Guy Parent, has
rescheduled his February
town hall in Greenwood.
All veterans, RCMP members, military members, their
families and other interested
parties are encouraged to
meet the veterans’ ombudsman Monday, June 8 at 6:30

Check Point Charlie swipe card effective June 15
The swipe card equipment
has been installed at Check
Point Charlie and will soon be
a requirement for personnel to
access the 14 Wing Greenwood
Airfield Operations Zone (AOZ).
The reader is a proximity reader
and will read the pass presented
from about six inches away.
Please be careful when approaching the reader so as not
to strike it with your vehicle mirror or other part of the vehicle.
Please note the Commissionaire employed at Check Point
Charlie cannot grant access
rights to AOZ pass holders. It
is incumbent on AOZ pass hold-
ers to ensure their AOZ pass is
activated and the proper access
rights are assigned to it. This
can only be done at the Pass
Control Office between 7:30
a.m. and 11:30 a.m., Monday to
Friday. The Commissionaires at
Check Point Charlie have been
instructed to advise AOZ pass
holders that do not have access
to Check Point Charlie programmed on their AOZ passes
to attend the Pass Control Office
ASAP to have that rectified. As
of June 15, you will be denied
access to the AOZ if your pass
is not activated or programmed
with access rights to Check
Point Charlie.
The following procedures
shall be followed when accessing the AOZ through Check
Point Charlie:
Passenger vehicles (not
including large passenger vans)
– The driver and all passengers
will swipe their AOZ pass. Passengers may hand their pass
to the driver who can swipe
the pass. You will need to allow
time for the Commissionaire to
verify the identity of the person.
The Commissionaire(s) will
verify the pass is valid and the
pass holder does have access
rights to be in the AOZ. Once
it has been determined the
driver and/ or passenger(s) in
the vehicle have access to the
AOZ, the Commissionaire will
advise the driver to proceed.
Do not proceed until instructed
by the Commissionaire you are
authorized to do so.
Large vehicles (fuel delivery
trucks, etc) – The driver shall
stop and hand over his pass
to the Commissionaire, who
will swipe the pass and verify
access to the AOZ is permitted.
Once verified, the Commissionaire will return the pass
and signal the driver to proceed.
Large passenger vehicle(s)/
buses/ carry-alls – The driver
shall stop and swipe his pass.
All passengers will exit the
vehicle and swipe their individual AOZ passes. The Commissionaire will then confirm
all have access and allow them
to proceed.
Personnel on foot or bicycles using the bike path will
have to swipe their AOZ pass
at the Check Point Charlie
entrance. Await further directions from the Commissionaire
before proceeding.
Vehicles being escorted –
The escorting vehicle driver
shall swipe his/ her AOZ pass
and then inform the Commissionaire the vehicle(s) behind
him are being escorted. Once
the Commissionaire has verified the escorting vehicle driver
has access to the AOZ and
escort privileges, he will inform
the driver to proceed, followed
by the escorted vehicle(s).
If you do not have Check
Point Charlie Access assigned to your AOZ pass,
you will be denied entry into
the AOZ. Invalid or expired
passes will be seized by the
Commissionaire(s) at Check
Point Charlie and returned to
the Pass Control Office.

commissionnaire rend sa carte
au conducteur et lui fait signe
d’avancer.
Grands véhicules à passagers, autocars, véhicules
polyvalents – Le conducteur
doit s’arrêter et passer sa carte
au lecteur. Tous les passagers
doivent sortir du véhicule et
passer eux-mêmes au lecteur
leur carte d’accès à la ZOA.
Le commissionnaire vérifie
ensuite que tous ont accès à la
zone avant de les laisser entrer.
Les piétons ou les cyclistes
qui utilisent la piste cyclable doivent passer leur carte
d’accès à la ZOA au lecteur à
l’entrée de Check Point Charlie
puis attendre les instructions
du commissionnaire avant

welcomed 16 wanna-be commandos May 31 to Camp
Aldershot, winners of a charity auction in support of
the Valley Regional Hospital
Foundation.
After kitting up and assembling on the lawn of Borden
Hall, Kerr told Command
Challenge participants they’d
“get out of the Army you put
in so, if you’re standing in the
rain – oh, I’m getting wet,”
too bad!
“The Army is all about fun!”
With the full Army experience including rain, wet feet,
didn’t necessarily include
losing a rifle bolt in the grass

husband, Dr. Dave MacHattie’s, still remember their first
patient: a poodle owned by
Angeline and Kent Sill.
The Greenwood Animal
Hospital marks its 25 th anniversary this month, and Dr.
Speelman says that kind of
relationship with hospital visitors, pets and their owners,
continues to be what staff are
all about.
“We’re hands-on, personnel care,” she says. “We see
families come in with brand
new kittens and puppies for
their first visit, and they’re so
pleased with their new pets –
and we are a part of their fam-
ily. We help families at the end
of their pets’ lives, supporting
them through emotional medical decisions.”

training with the colleges, taking students from Dalhousie
Truro campus and Atlantic
Veterinary College, local high
schools’ co-op education and
take your child to work days;
and medical and professional
services support for the Companion Animal Protection Society (the rescue organization

In 1990, as the hospital
opened, Drs. Speelman and
MacHattie were the only two
medical staff. Tens of thousands of patients have now
visited over the years, satisfied
with the full service commitment to both small and large
animal care at the main Greenwood location, and also the
satellite clinic in Middleton. In
the family nature of the business Dr. Speelman and Dr.
MacHattie’s daughter Nicole, is
now one of the seven veterinarians; four registered veterinary
technicians, two receptionists.
The staff are professionally
trained, and continue to keep
skills sharp and learn new
techniques in regular educational upgrades. The hospital’s
equipment include digital Xray, digital dental X-ray, laser
therapy, ultrasound all equal
quality to the local hospital. Pet
food, treatments, toys and other
supplies are also featured.

Basketball how-tos
Thirty-four grade 3 to 5 students had the amazing opportunity to attend a three-hour basketball clinic May
31 at the Kingston District School gymnasium. Two
professional players, Rob and Jamal, led the children
through a wide variety of drills, activities and games.

The weekend gets underway

around the fire pit, and early

poker run main event.
Saturday, registration for the
run will be 8:30 a.m. to 9:30
a.m. Cost is $20; additional
hands are $10. The poker run
starts at 10 a.m. and will cover
80 kilometres. The top hand
will win $400; second is $300
and third is $200. A BBQ will be
hosted by Kings County Search
& Rescue.
Back on the grounds, register for the mud pit prize

program, underway June 28.
This eight-session program is offered to youth
between the ages of six and
18, included with Junior and
Intermediate membership
fees, free to children of current club members holding
full adult memberships, or
at a cost of $50. Instruction,
bottled water, a hot dog and
treats are included with each
session.

host an information session
for parents and youth, covering the schedule, topics of
instruction, and the expectations and responsibilities
of both instructors and students. On-course play gets
underway June 30, with an
introduction to golf rules,
etiquette and stretches. An
evaluation will determine if
the group should be divided
for further instruction.

through July, Monday and
Wednesday afternoons. Topics of the day will be determined by progression.

High School organized a successful garbage clean-up of
a popular hiking trail on the
outskirts of Greenwood.

small band of volunteers to
endure an onslaught of black
flies to reach Crystal Falls. In
total, the crew collected over
20 bags of garbage dumped
along the two-kilometre trail,
with a number of larger items
including mattresses, vehicle
parts and broken furniture.
With three separate dumping
sites tackled, these conscientious citizens also collected
over three buckets of broken
glass along the path used
by outdoor enthusiasts and
their pets. This clean-up was
