CLASSICAL WINDS is an ensemble
of flexible disposition which in its fullest
complement consists of pairs of oboes,
clarinets, horns and bassoons. The group
is composed of leading exponents of
baroque and classical wind instruments
who can be found scattered about the
wind sections of all the major baroque
and classical orchestras in England. They
formed CLASSICAL WINDS through
these associations, with the desire to
explore the rich though largely untapped
wind repertoire of the eighteenth century.
With the aid of a grant from the Arts
Council of Great Britain the group has
made a careful study of original sources
and classical style with emphasis on the
musical possibilities suggested by the
sonorities of historic instruments.
Finchcocks is both a museum of
historical instruments and a music centre
of international repute. Founded by
pianist Richard Burnett and first opened
to the public in 1977 the beautiful 18th.
century mansion houses his magnificent
collection of keyboard instruments.
Finchcocks is one of the few museums in
the world where a large proportion of the
instruments are in full playing order.

chatted, joked, made music, played
games and had a marvellous time.”
Mozart’s Divertimenti K439b are almost
certainly companion pieces to the six
Notturni for a trio of voices with
accompaniment of clarinets and basset
horns, which were written between 1783
and 1788 during the course of his
friendship with the famous botanist, the
Baron von Jacquin. The cultural
gatherings at the Jacquin home are
described in the memoires (1844) of
another close friend, Caroline Pichler:
“The family had been for 60-70 years a
focus of attention for men of science.
While scientists visited the older Jacquin
and his son Joseph Franz, who followed
in his footsteps, other young intellectuals
gathered around Gottfried, the younger
son, who had a wide range of interests
besides considerable musical talent and a
pleasant voice, and also around his sister
Franzisca. During the Wednesday soirees
scientific topics were discussed in the
father’s rooms while we young people
Unfortunately, Mozart’s autograph of
the Divertimenti disappeared at an early
stage. The only complete source is a
Simrock publication, dated c. 1813 by
Kochel but possibly as early as 1806:
Trois Serenades/pour/deux Clarinettes/et
Basson, composees par/A. Mozart/Livre I
(II) Prix 5 Francs... An important earlier
Breitkopf publication (1803), Petites
Pieces/Pour/Deux Cors de Bassette/et
Basson par/ W.A. Mozart/Livre. I.. has
only movements 2-4 of Divertimento 2,
together with a substitute finale (which
may be the work of the clarinettist Anton
Stadler). In 1804 Artaria published
eleven of the movements as 3 Terzetti
facili for two violins and cello, or flute,
violin and cello. The following year the
same publisher issued two sets of three
Sonatines for piano, comprising 21 of the
movements. The various titles in these
sources raises the question whether
Mozart originally intended a loose
succession of short pieces or a more
4
formal layout (The term ‘Divertimento’
was applied to these works only in the
later nineteenth century). Serenade 6 in
Simrock’s publication may be discounted
as evidence, since it is a later
arrangement of items from Le Nozze di
Figaro and Don Giovanni. The
remaining pieces, numbered 1-25, make
up four serenades of conventional
structure (though with some unusually
short opening movements), and a more
ambiguous fifth, whose movements are
Adagio, Minuet, Adagio, Romance (all in
B flat) and Polonaise (in E flat). Serenade
5 may in fact be the surviving portions of
two final serenades from an original set
of six, though the inferior quality of
material has led Alfred Einstein and
others to question its authenticity.
1800 from Constanze Mozart to the
publisher Andre describes Stadler’s loss
of some Mozart manuscripts from his
suitcase, including “copies of some trios
for basset horns that are still unknown.”
The Divertimenti are performed by
CLASSICAL WINDS in the form in
which they achieved widest currency.
Arrangements of various kinds were
extremely popular in Mozart’s day, and
there are numerous examples from his
own hand, including a transcription of
Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail for
Harmonie (mentioned in a letter of July
20 1782) and a recasting of the wind
Serenade in C minor for string quintet.
The combination of two clarinets and
bassoon was cultivated in particular by
prominent performer-composers, such as
the clarinettist Jean Xavier Lefevre and
the flautist/bassoonist Francois Devienne,
who were both closely associated with
the Paris Conservatoire from its
foundation in 1795.

That the Divertimenti were originally
conceived for a trio of basset horns was
first suspected by Michael Whewell, who
cited internal stylistic evidence supported
by the notation of the Breitkopf edition,
which has all three parts at the same
pitch. Furthermore, a letter dated 31 May
