usar roupas fashion. Todos os dias academias e clínicas de
estética são inauguradas. Novos cirurgiões plásticos se
formam e fórmulas emagrecedoras são lançadas no mercado. A
1
Várias adolescentes estão
apelando para a plástica por causa
do nariz, barriga, peito ou bumbum.
Arrumar um namorado, conseguir
um emprego, ser aceito por um
determinado grupo são alguns dos
motivos que podem levar uma
adolescente a enfrentar um bisturi.
Mas vale mesmo tudo pela beleza?
E você, se pudesse o que mudaria?
Do you ever wish you were as
thin as a model or as strong as
your favorite football player?
Maybe you wish you were
taller, fatter, thinner or just a
little different. Those thoughts
are a natural part of growing
up. When people accept the
way they look, they often feel
happier.
Think about body image and write:
1- Do you worry about your looks and body? Why/ Why not?
________________________________________________________________
2- Is there a part of your body you would like to change?
__________________________________________________________
3- Would you be ready to have plastic surgery to improve your looks?
___________________________________________________________
4- Do you know people who have had cosmetic surgery? ______________
5- Do you necessarily feel better when you look better? ________________
6- Do you think cosmetic surgery is always a success? Why (not)?
________________________________________________________________
7- When a girl/boy wants to lost weight, do you think she/he follows
the rules of a good health? Why (not)? _____________________________
_______________________________________________________________

“I'm fat. I'm too skinny. I'd be
happy if I were taller, shorter, had
curly hair, straight hair, a smaller
nose, bigger muscles, longer legs…”.
Do any of these statements sound
familiar? Are you used to putting
yourself down? If so, you're not
alone.
Teenagers everywhere worry about their
looks and their weight. The news-stands are
displaying magazines of which almost every
issue has a thin, gorgeous model on its cover.
The television is showing more and more
unhealthily thin actresses.
What is more, this obsession with thinness
seems to have a sort of domino effect. One
actress loses weight to please the media, next
all her co-stars are losing weight to keep up.
They don’t want to look fat standing next to a
thinner person.

To Discuss
As a teen, you're going through a ton
of changes in your body and, as your body
changes, so does your image of yourself.
Lots of teens have trouble adjusting, and
this can affect their self-esteem and,
consequently, how they act. For example,
a person who has high self-esteem will
make friends easily, is more in control of
his/her behaviour, and will enjoy life
more. So, you must understand the
changes in your body to be happier.
Body image is how someone feels about
his or her own physical appearance.
If you have a positive body image,
you probably like and accept yourself the
way you are. This healthy attitude allows
you to explore other aspects of growing
up, such as developing good friendships,
growing more independent from your
parents,
and
challenging
yourself
physically and mentally. So, you should
live well and accept yourself the way you
are.

Observe the sentence of the text: “So, you should live well and accept
yourself the way you are.”
Do you agree with this advice?
You should cut your hair.
I should really
have brushed my
hair.
We use should to give someone advice.
We use should to say what we think is the
right or best thing for a person to do.
We often use should with I think/I don’t
think.
Ex. I don’t think you should eat so much chocolate. I
think you should eat more fruits.
You should take
more care of
your hair.
They should be
here by now.
Shouldn’t is the negative form
of should.
We use shouldn’t to say what
we think isn’t the right or best
thing for a person to do.
When you have a problem do you ask your friends for advice? Now is your time.
Many teenagers have problems – like you sometimes. Can you help and give them some
advice?
Try to use the modal verb : should /shouldn´t

Beauty and Body Image in the Media
“Images
of female bodies
are
everywhere. Women—and their body
parts—sell everything from food to cars.
Popular film and television actresses are
becoming younger, taller and thinner”.
According to a new study, women
around the world are tormented by the
narrow beauty ideals dominating popular
culture.
To help the average woman achieve this
look, a variety of products have become
available, and this makes possible for
pursuing that ideal appearance lies in the
development of techniques and technologies
of cosmetic surgery.

Advertising plays a very important role in a consumer society.
We are all consumers and we work as hard as we can to get more things. The
more we have the more we want : we are never satisfied.
Companies spend millions every year advertising their products. They use a variety
of clever techniques to persuade us to buy their products. Some companies employ famous
athletes, singers and actors. They think that if we see our heroes wearing a certain T-shirt,
then we will want to wear it, too. Other companies use words like 'modern', 'unique' or
'latest' because they believe that if they use such words, we will want to buy their products.
Young children and teenagers are important to companies because they have their
own purchasing power, they influence their parents' buying decisions and they're the adult
consumers of the future.
However, we should be careful because
advertising uses and influences children and
teenagers and a healthy society should raise
children to be responsible citizens rather than just
consumers.

Over the years, shopping has become a very common activity. Lots of people enjoy going to
shopping centers or stores, but it’s more than a common hobby for some of them. They have become
shopaholics, people who simply enjoy shopping and walking around spending money without being
able to stop doing it.
Shopaholics, also called compulsive spenders. They really like shopping and usually buy
things that they don’t need. They don’t have enough money, but they buy everything they want.
Some people go shopping when they are sad, worried or lonely and they want to feel better.
They use this activity as a way to forget their problems. Shopaholics say that they feel more important
and better after they buy something.
14
We think that women enjoy shopping more than men, but that’s not true. Men really like
shopping because they feel they have power and control.
Shopaholism can cause many problems. Some of them can be psychological; and in women
spend their money on clothes, cosmetics, decorations for their houses, or things for the family.that
case, people should get help. It can also cause financial problems.
In conclusion, if you are a person who enjoys shopping, be careful. Try to control yourself. Next
time you go shopping, stop a second and think about it. Examine your shopping habits. Later might be
too late.

Some teenagers like to have parts of their body
pierced,
others their body tattooed. They claim that
it is exciting
and a form of art, a way of expressing
themselves.
What is your opinion about this?
BODY ART
Body decoration and fashion are ancient means of self-expression used by lots of
cultures all over the world.
Forms of body decoration change according to new trends, tastes and styles. You only
need to consider that some forms of body decoration traditionally associated only with punks –
dyeing, tattooing, piercing—are increasingly popular today.
The appeal of piercing has spread beyond punks. Whether you like it or not, the world is
getting hooked on body piercing. Its popularity is growing rapidly not only because piercing is not
very expensive, but also because it is much safer and a lot simpler than tattoos.
Piercing is not just a trend for punks or rockers anymore. It’s all the rage nowadays.
Unfortunately, there isn’t any legislation to regulate safety procedures. With the increasing
popularity of body decoration comes the need for safety regulations.
