Digging In
- Jay Bergman sits on 992 career wins at UCF.
- Eric Kallstrom is riding a 12-game hitting streak.
- Dwayne Bailey is a perfect 19-for-19 in stolen-base attempts.
- Bailey, Tyson Auer, Josh Siebenaler and Colin Arnold all have at least 10 steals this season.
On Deck for the Knights
Sunday will be the important rubber match between UCF
and Memphis, with first pitch slated to take place at noon at
Jay Bergman Field. Sophomore lefty Carmine Giardina (2-1,
8.24) will battle junior righty Will Hudgens (1-3, 4.96) to
determine who will take the series.
Upcoming Opponent
Memphis is 4-7 in league play and 13-20 overall following
Saturday’s extra-inning win. The Tigers were victims of nine
in a row before defeating Mississippi State in 10 innings April
8, but four of those losses were against ranked teams including three to Rice. Memphis has racked up 24 hits in the series vs. UCF this weekend, including five by Brett Bowen
and Robby Graham.
The Series
The Tigers have dominated the series with UCF and hold a
7-2 lead after the two teams split games one and two this
weekend. Memphis outscored the Knights 41-11 at Jay
Bergman Field in a three-game sweep in 2006. UCF then
defeated Memphis in game one last year in Tennessee before
losing three-straight, including a 12-6 decision in an elimination game in the C-USA Championship.
UCF vs. Memphis Game One Recap
Four first-inning runs enabled UCF to cruise to a 10-6 win
over Memphis April 11. All nine starters had a hit or a run
2008 UCF Baseball Game Notes
scored, as the Knights tied a season-high with 17 hits in the
victory. Eric Kallstrom and Evan Stobbs paced the offense
with four hits apiece, while Kyle Sweat picked up the win by
going 5.1 innings with five strikeouts.
UCF vs. Memphis Game Two Recap
Memphis jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the top of the second, but the Knights kept chipping away. Trailing 7-5 in the
ninth, Robert Lara tied it up with a one-out two-run single
into left to send it to extras. But the Tigers plated the eventual winning run in the 11th to capture an 8-7 win. UCF had
plenty of scoring chances throughout the game, however it
had a hard time delivering as it left 16 runners on base, and
hit into crucial double plays in the ninth and 11th innings.
Situational Hitting
While strong pitching typically provides UCF with victories,
the offense also needs to perform in the clutch. In 25 wins
this year, the Knights hit .340 with runners in scoring position, .347 with runners on base and held a 69.9 percentage
when getting the RBI with a runner at third and less than
two outs.
Conversely, in the 12 losses UCF went .204 with RISP, .269
with runners aboard and had a 54.5 percentage when attempting to get the RBI with a runner at third and less than
two away.

Streaking Kallstrom
Shortstop Eric Kallstrom enters Sunday with a 12-game hitting streak on the line. During the stretch, the junior has batted .392 (20-for-51) with five doubles, a homer and seven
RBI. Earlier this year, Kallstrom recorded a 14-game hitting
streak.
A Look at UCF’s Victories
So far in 2008, UCF has played and defeated seven different
teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament a year ago:
Missouri 1-0, Monmouth 3-0, Stetson 2-0, Jacksonville 1-1,
Southern Miss 1-2, East Carolina 1-2 and Memphis 1-1.
Eric and Evan Equals Eight Hits
Eric Kallstrom and Evan Stobbs both set career-highs against
Memphis April 11. The duo each notched four hits in the
win, while Kallstrom scored three runs and Stobbs amassed
three RBI. Combined, they racked up eight of UCF’s 17 hits
on the night.
Completely Herold
After last year witnessed no UCF starter toss a complete
game, Mitch Herold broke that trend April 9 vs. Stetson. The
junior southpaw hurled a three-hitter to defeat the Hatters,
4-1, matching a career-high with nine strikeouts while walking only one. He also set a personal best with his 9.0-inning
performance, as his previous career-long outing was 7.0 innings. Herold finished his victory with just 101 pitches.
No. 200
Senior Tyson Auer became just the 15th player in UCF history to record 200 hits in a Black and Gold uniform when
he posted a single against Stetson April 9. The center fielder
now needs just 12 hits to crack the top 10.
Timpner Takes a Trip - To the Majors
Former UCF Knight Clay Timpner (2002-04) got the call
he has been waiting for since being drafted by San Francisco
in the 2004 MLB Draft. The outfielder was called up from
Triple-A to the Giants on April 8, and proceeded to board a
plane and head to California to suit up with the major league
club as it prepared to battle the Padres that night. After nine
innings went by and the score knotted at 2-2, Timpner was
sent in to left field as a defensive replacement, and even
though he struck out in his first MLB plate appearance, the
Giants won 3-2 in the bottom of the 11th. Timpner previously spent four years in the minors, including all of last
season with the Triple-A Fresno Grizzlies.
Allen Wrangles the Bulls
Nerves could have gotten the better of freshman Cody Allen
as he went out for his first collegiate start vs. USF April 8.
But instead he put on a show, tossing 8.0 innings with six
strikeouts, no walks and just three runs against him to pick
up the victory. The righty scattered six hits on 110 pitches en
route to becoming just the second Knight this year to last at
least 8.0 innings in a start.
Granny Time
It can always be a bold move when coaches insert a new stick
into the cleanup spot in the batting order. But Robert Lara
immediately ensured that he would not let his team down
when he batted fourth for the first time against USF April

8. Following two singles and a walk to start the first inning,
Lara hammered the first pitch he saw over the left-field wall
for his second grand slam of the year. The home run provided UCF with the 4-0 lead and the Knights had no trouble
holding onto the lead in the 6-3 win.
they may feel really good about themselves. However many
times their winning attitude turns into frustration as Houck
has racked up six pickoffs this season with his dynamic move
to first base. The lefty has 15 for his career, including two in
2007 before he earned a medical redshirt.
Lara became the first UCF Knight since 2005 to hit at least
two grand slams in the same season (Dee Brown had three).
Fans Taking Notice
A total of 3,709 fans flocked to Jay Bergman Field for the
East Carolina series, which ranked as the third-largest attended series in stadium history. The crowd of 1,490 for
game two stands as the 11th largest at The Berg.
Laying Them Down
Going through a period where it had just two sacrifice bunts
in its previous nine games, UCF was going to make sure
that would change against USF April 8. However, the results
were even better than it planned. The Knights laid down five
bunts, four of which were singles and another a sac bunt by
Dwayne Bailey. Ryan Richardson had two of those bunt singles as UCF’s use of the small ball paid off in a 6-3 win.
Stobbs Clobbers
In just his third UCF start and first at first base, freshman
Evan Stobbs crushed Houston pitching April 6. He opened
up his afternoon with a sacrifice fly to deep center in the second inning, ripped a single off the pitcher and scored a run
in the fourth, drilled a two-run homer in the fifth and lined a
single through the left side in the seventh. Stobbs completed
his start 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored, while
his home run was the first of his college career.
Lara’s Likes the Lone Star
Robert Lara brought more than just his catching gear to
Houston April 4-6, he added an impressive stick. The junior
went 6-for-10 (including a start at DH in the series finale)
with a run scored and an RBI vs. the Cougars.
Giving Himself Up
Senior Dwayne Bailey may only be in his second year with
the Knights, but has laid down 17 career sacrifice bunts, including six this season. Those 17 sac hits rank seventh on the
UCF all-time chart.

That attendance did not come close to the turn out just three
days later against USF April 1. From 2002-07, Jay Bergman
Field’s record of 2,170 set on opening day in 2001 was never
broken. However, a standing-room only crowd of 2,397 witnessed the Knights clash with the Bulls April 1 to break the
old attendance record by 227. It was just the second time
more than 2,000 fans took in a ballgame at UCF.
A Glimpse into the Future
UCF’s 2009 recruiting class was ranked at No. 7 in the country by Perfect Game, the highest ranking under recruiting
coordinator Craig Cozart. The position also was the highest
of any C-USA program. The Knights signed 14 players for
next season and all of them hail from the state of Florida.
Sitting Them Down the Easy Way
UCF pitchers have racked up 380 strikeouts this season, led
by Mitch Houck’s 56 Ks. In all, 13 different Knights have
double-digit strikeout totals, as the staff is averaging 10.24

2008 UCF Baseball Game Notes
Game #38 Memphis at UCF
Head Coach Jay Bergman
Jay Bergman not only built UCF into a championship program when he joined the Knights in 1983,
he continued that tradition into the 21st century.
Bergman, a consistent winner throughout his decorated coaching career, has turned UCF into one of
the 30 winningest programs in the NCAA in the
2000s. The dean of all UCF coaches, Bergman has
the most wins of any coach at UCF, as he leads the
Black and Gold for his 26th season in 2008.
Under Bergman, UCF has qualified for nine NCAA
Regional berths and won six Atlantic Sun titles (the
most of any coach or conference team) before joining Conference USA in 2006. The skipper was named the 1995 Atlantic Region
Coach of the Year, while also being selected as a two-time Atlantic Sun Coach of
the Year (2001, 2002).
In 2001 Bergman received the greatest gift of all for all his hard work and
dedication, a brand new state-of-the-art facility which bears his name. In
2001, UCF dominated its opponents at the new ballpark going 30-7, including a 19-1 start, with a .331 batting average and a 2.95 ERA inside the
friendly confines of Jay Bergman Field.
Bergman began his coaching career with a seven-year stint at Seminole Community College in nearby Sanford, where his teams posted an overall record
of 180-79 (.695). Beginning in 1968, Bergman’s teams qualified for six consecutive state tournaments and he was a three-time Division II coach of the
year. He departed SCC after the 1973 season for a three-year assistant coaching stint at Florida before taking the head coaching reigns in 1976.
The University of Florida can thank Jay Bergman for its baseball program’s
success, as he brought the Gators into the national spotlight with their first
ever NCAA Regional appearance during his tenure at UF. Bergman left Florida with the highest winning percentage in school history (216-113, .657). In
his first 13 years of coaching, 57 of his former players went on to the professional ranks (21 SCC, 36 Florida).
Over Bergman’s 38-year head coaching career, many of his former players
have earned national, regional and conference honors for academic and athletic excellence. More than 100 of Bergman’s former players have signed professional contracts and 10 of those players, including five first-round selections, have played in the major leagues.
Fourteen UCF players had been recognized as All-Americans in one form or
another. In 2004, Matt Fox, Kyle Bono, Taylor Meier and Clay Timpner all
collected All-America honors.
Bergman’s players are recognized off the field as well. In 2007, 16 Knights
earned a spot on C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll, which included Nick
Choto receiving the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal for having a
GPA of 3.75 or higher. That came after a 2006 campaign in which 14 student-athletes received honor-roll accolades. In 2002, 13 players were named
to the A-Sun All-Academic Team. In 2001, Chad Ehrnsberger became the
first athlete in UCF sports history to earn first-team Academic All-American
status. Ehrnsberger and Bill Oakley were also regionally recognized. In 1998,
Matt Lubozynski was a second team Academic All-American.
Bergman received his master’s of science degree in sociology from Appalachian State in 1966 and his undergraduate degree in history/government
from Rollins College in 1963.
A member of the Rollins College, UCF, Winter Park High School and Richmond County (Va.) Baseball Coaches Halls of Fame, Bergman is a popular
clinician at various camps and events around the country and has also participated in the NCAA Youth Education through Sports baseball clinic at the
College World Series in Omaha.
Bergman has a wife Sherry, and four children, Jay, Jr., Catherine, Michael
and Tiffany. Jay, Jr. played for the Knights from 1983-84 during his father’s
first two seasons at UCF.
