I gonO. but "Shirlev Manson and her
I cohoris seem to be more than satisfied
with Garbage. Now they are on the brink of
releasing their fourth CD, peculiarly called
beautifulgarbage, perhaps they should be
broadening their horizons. The Voice engaged
in a little satelliie linking and discovered they
don't just talk rubbish.
Satellite linkups are never going to be the
easiest way to conduct an interview. There's
that embarrassing "No you first, please I
insist," echo to deal with, pictures are an
impossibility, and let's not forget the
humiliaiion intrepid journalists have to go
through when seeing exactly how stupid one
looks on camera when trying io ask a serious
music question" This aside, the four members

of Garbage seemed to take the whole thing in
their stride and even engaged in a Iittle
friendly banter with the press. And for the
record, Shirley Manson. The Voice is NOT a
cynic.
Beautifulgarbage is a superb effort from the
band who, with the exception of Edinburghborn Shirley Manson, hail from the serial killer
capital of the world, Wisconsin. At once sexy
and yet emotional, this is quite possibly
Garbage's most extreme album yet. But how
does
it differ from
previous releases?
Drummer Butch Vig says, "The songs are in
some ways more simple. They stand on their
own and ihe CD is a lot more straight forward."
He continues, "A lot of it ls in the lyrics, and
they're the best Shirley has written. Some of
them are very direct, the melodies are really
strong and we shied away from, 'Let's see how
far we can sonically go off with this."'
Lead singer Manson continues, "Beautifulgarbage
is more diverse than the previous two albums
but it is simpler. The dichotomy between the
extremes is much widerl'
It has been said that relationships have been
strained
in the past while
recording,
especially with the last CD Version 2.0. "fhe
fights were even bigger this time," laughs
Manson. "No really, recording was much
more relaxed for all of us. Having been on the
road lor the last 20 months brought us closer
together and made us feel more confident as
a band and in our song writing. Of course we
had disagreements and a few heated
exchanges but no big blowouts. Well maybe
one. The fights were more pleasurable this
iime."
So in all of this, who has the final say when ii
comes to decisions? "Who the hell do you
think has the final say?" says Manson, with a
peculiar triumphant glint in her eye. Well we're
not arguing with her.
And do they have any plans to visit Hong
Kong soon? Manson says emphatically,
"Absolutely. We've never actually made it as
far as Hong Kong before. We've been to
Japan and Singapore, but if we were invited to
play [in Hong Kong] it would be exciting for us,
and we do intend to do so." Ah, The Voice
bemoans, but everyone says that. "Well
they're all liars," she retorts with typical
Manson aplomb.
