On the Greens - Donny
Latham, Golf Course Superintendent
Now that we are into January and February we will start paying close attention
to the colder nights. We will begin staging our greens covers close to all our
greens in the event we have nights that
will dip into the 20's and remain there for most of the day. It
is important that we cover greens to protect the warm season
Berumda grass greens. I will send an email blast and/or text
alerts when we will need to cover greens. This process is
labor intensive so we will need several hours to cover all 40
greens on our property.
Some updates on other projects that we have started. As
many of you have noticed we have removed the ball washers
from the North Course. These were in very bad condition. I
have sent these off to be sandblasted, repaired and freshly
powder coated in black paint. Once these are sent back to
me, we will reinstall in our new tee marker beds. We are
installing new mulch beds that will include plants to enhance
each tee. These mulch beds will have color year round as
well as freshly painted ball washers and tee signs. These
small detail updates are an essential part of your membership
experience.
Overall the health of both courses have weathered the winter
quite well. I realize that most often February is one of our
coldest months, hence the reason our greens covers will be
staged around the course in the event we must cover
greens. Warmer days are coming, so I hope to see you all
soon on the golf courses.

Golf News - Jeff Hunter,
Director of Golf
February! Hopefully we are passed what turned out to
be a bad weather month in January. Cold and damp
weekends seemed to be the norm early, but as is
always the case in San Antonio we should have great weather ahead. El
Nino will hopefully provide us with rains and not floods, giving us great
golfing conditions throughout 2016. I personally feel we are primed for a
great year with a board of directors, SWGA committee, MGA committee
and various other groups leading the way. If you are new to the club or a
long time member, contact us if you are looking for a game, putting together a work outing, sponsoring a large outing, or just need something
personally.
ANNUAL CART PLAN: Once again we are offering our annual cart
plan. This plan is billed twice a year, January and July, and includes all
cart fees for one or two members in the same family. The plan is $1590 for
an individual or $2090 for two. Members can sign up through February 15
for the year and we will pro-rate the first payment. This plan is great for
those working that want to sneak out a few times in the evening, but can't
get in a full round, alone with their regular game. Call the golf shop to
sign up today.
The SWGA is off and running with the "rust remover" being the first
event. The ladies came out in spite of the cool weather and didn't let our
long, (lol), winter throw off their games! If you would like to join the
ladies please call the golf shop and we can get you signed up. The ladies
play on Wednesday and shotgun at 9 AM.
The MGA also kicked off the year in January. A three man scramble was
the first event and was very well attended with 111 players. February is
the MGA 4 man quota event and members have the option of creating
their own foursome or allowing the computer to do the draw. Please call
the golf shop to sign up and don't forget to accumulate those Sonterra Cup
points!! For those of you new to Sonterra the MGA plays every second
Saturday until November with a few other events thrown in.
PLEASE NOTE: Sonterra will be hosting a couple of non Monday events
in February. The first will be an STPGA junior golf event on Saturday
February 13th. The second will be the Greater San Antonio Four Ball
Championship, Saturday and Sunday the 20th & 21st.. Both of these
events will be scheduled with the least amount of interruption possible to
member play. We feel these type of events show Sonterra's commitment to
the game and the growth of the game in our community. Many members
will play in each of these events and we thank you for your support.

2016 MGA Update
Our goal this year is to keep the great best practices of the past but work in some fresh new initiatives. From fair play to food and
beverage, we are striving to create premier events so that more members participate and enjoy the experience when they do. Here are some
of the highlights for the 2016 season.
1). 10 tournaments, plus the Sonterra Cup
2) Cash payouts made to the top 1/3 of each tournament field
3) Money List rankings (participation and performance) to determine Sonterra Cup participants
4) Top 40 participants on the Money List will qualify for the Sonterra Cup. There also will be 4 more spots added based on performance in the last
three 2016 tournaments and club event participation
5) To the extent possible, members will be allowed to pick their own teams for team events
2016 MGA Tournament Schedule
Pre-Tournament “Smokers”
All Sonterra Golf members are encouraged to join the MGA and meet
friends and golfers at your club. Tournaments are held on the second
weekend of each month. We have a variety of one day and two day
tournaments on the schedule, and will be looking at ways to foster
competition during the week for members who aren’t able to play on
weekends.
To kick off the new year right, a “smoker” get-together was held on January 8th prior to the Three Man Scramble. The event featured great food,
adult beverages, and premium cigars for those who wished to indulge.
Additional smokers are scheduled for February 12 th, May 13th,
August 13th and October 8th.

MGA Tournament Handicapping
We have adopted a new MGA tournament handicapping system for
2016. For events where individual scores are posted (there are 5 events
in 2016), a player’s handicap will be based on his MGA tournament
performance. Only events where an individual score can be posted will
count toward a player’s MGA handicap – thus, no shamble, scramble or
other event based on team performance will be used.
To ensure accuracy and the maximum possible fairness to all, a score
must be posted for each hole in a tournament counting toward an individual’s handicap. Failure to post will result in a score of “par” for the
hole involved.

The Sonterra Cup
The Sonterra Cup is a yearlong event. The top 40 on the MGA Money List, with money earned for participation and performance, automatically qualify
for the Sonterra Cup tournament. An additional four spots will be earned in the last three MGA tournaments, keeping the excitement going to the
end. The Sonterra cup is contested in a Ryder Cup format and will be held this year on November 14 & 15. Each MGA member is automatically
entered into the Sonterra Cup by signing up for any MGA tournament.

tournaments planned for the year. The WTGA Eclectic is coming to Sonterra in March. Plan

FITNESS
Valentine’s Day is coming up quick, and the scramble to put together the perfect date has begun. Making last minute reservations at his/ her favorite restaurant—or any restaurant for that matter—is getting more impossible by
the hour. Not being able to book a lengthy three course dinner might actually put you in a position to throw together a better evening. You both enjoy being active and staying healthy, so why not do it on V-Day? Plan something that will make him/her feel a little more special than going out for a cliché expensive, no-thought-required
dinner date.
1) Take a Cooking Class - Everyone wants a great meal on V-Day, but having a professional cook it for you is
only one way to get one. Think of it this way. going to a cooking class is an all around win. You’ll actually
learn a thing or two and you can’t really screw the food up because you have an expert taking you through it
step by step.
2) Book a Couples Massage - This is the perfect excuse to spoil yourself while you spoil him/her. Book an appointment for a joint massage at a local spa and you’ll start or end your Valentine’s Day on the right foot.
3) Work Out Together - Who says you can’t break a sweat on Valentine’s Day? Go for a run together, or go to
your favorite workout class. Once you’re out of breath, and high on some feel-good endorphins it’s a good
idea to re-fuel your bodies. How about going for a healthy post-workout shake?
4) Go For a Bike Ride - If you’re not game for a serious sweat, how about a long leisurely bike ride? It’s also
got a little more romantic. Try to plan a route ahead of time, preferably one with a little scenery. Getting out
in the fresh air together will be fun, and you can end the ride by enjoying a home cooked meal at your place.
5)
Him/Her with a Brown Bag Lunch - Having flowers delivered to her desk is a tried-and-true strategy for
wishing her a happy Valentine’s Day, but showing up in-person means even more. If you can sneak away
from your job for an hour, surprise him/her at work with a healthy lunch that you’ve made yourself.
There you have it! 5 fun, healthy, and romantic alternatives to a typical Valentine’s Day.

Tennis News- Michelle Dodier, Director of Tennis
February is here and hopefully everyone has settled
into their spring schedule. With league play as the bulk of
tennis that is played city wide we are trying to keep everyone informed of the next level/age that’s coming up.
For those captains and players that are playing on multiple
teams on multiple days and trying to stay ahead of multiple deadlines it can be crazy. We are sending out information as fast as we can get it so you won’t miss any deadlines. For more information you can go online to the
SATA website and the 2016 USTA league schedule is
there so you can plan ahead.
The program here at Sonterra --we are proud to say-- is
huge. We have members looking for teams to join, looking for clinics to take, new members looking for new friends and parents wanting their
children in our afterschool junior program. The staff is here to help and Laurie, who is
our League Coordinator/Member Relations person, will point you in the right direction. We want you on the court, on a team and having fun as quickly as possible-- so
call us.
As the season begins so does the court congestion problem. We ask our members
and our captains to please let the pro shop know as soon as
possible when they
don’t need their courts. We can have a huge program and still fit everyone on a court
if we are a little flexible with times and cancel courts as early as possible. The upcoming make-up matches are probably the most trying because of the existing programs
that are going on and teams trying to squeeze matches into those few open slots. Friday evening the courts are wide open so hopefully that day will be taken advantage of
more this season.
We had our first meeting for the Grand Slam Member Guest Tournament which is the
weekend of April 29- May 1st. Mark your calendar and start thinking about who you
are going to invite to the event of the year. April 1st is registration day and it fills up
within hours –so just letting you know.
As our program grows, so do the needs of our members. We try to stay one step
ahead of any gridlock to make it better for your enjoyment. We can’t win every match
for you, but we can make you excited and proud about coming out to your club. Remember it’s all about fun!
Our Top 8 Members (1 per membership) who Sponsor
the MOST New Members by September 30th will win
a Free Trip to Las Vegas in November 2016.
