As we approach OTA14: Fargo, we are turning the spotlight on some of the incredible people of Fargo who
embody a spirit of boldness and possibility - values at the core of OTA. We supplied them with a list of
questions and they returned them to us with answers full of advice and deeply personal insights. We're
thrilled to have partnered with Penny Burns with Northern Stories to capture beautiful environmental
portraits of these incredible individuals. http://www.weareota.com/intersections/2014/8/27/ota-spotlight-ludvik-herrera

Give us a behind the scenes look at your average day. Wake up to the banter and conversations of my wife,
our three girls and one boy. Drive children to school. Arrive to IDeaspace, catch up to what’s happen the
night before and what ideas we have for the challenges of the day ahead. Very often we have students,
faculty, staff or individuals that stop by our space because they are intrigued by the ‘playful looks’ of our
location. We usually have a few things to address with interface design, maybe a photo session for marketing
materials, sometimes video recording interviews, building prototypes with electronics and even robotics, or
even discovering a fun idea through code or programming for the web or mobile technology. Many people
indicate that it seems fun and games. We say that when you enjoy what you do, everything is playtime. There
is not an average day, and that’s a great thing.
What projects are you currently working on, both in your career as well as hobbies or passions? At
IDeaspace we’re currently working on a couple ideas for interactive displays, a presentation booth for an
expo, a content and design framework for institutional websites, an interactive app for idea generation, and
an augmented reality project for Google Glass to help us with campus activities. This is all exciting and
professionals, students and faculty from all disciplines can be part of these projects.
At home, I have been helping my 8 and 5 year old daughter and son figure out how to program basic ‘robots’
using Lego Mindstorms, Scratch and Hopscotch. I have returned to lettering and ink drawing which I used to
do many years ago. Lastly, I have been enjoying photography by doing a couple projects with a group of fantastic creative
people, Jason Gunkel and Jon Forness where we have done editorial shoots for fun and personal satisfaction.

What challenge in your life or work are you most interested in overcoming? We want to bring the awe and
magic of science, engineering and design to education. STEAM education is wonderful. We know there are
many people that would like to learn and exchange ideas with this methodology, but have neither had the
exposure or opportunity to do so. We want to change that. If you could do any job, what would you do and why? My job is fun, it’s full of challenges and every
challenge has so many possibilities. I’d like to help more people discover their passion and it is so thrilling
and rewarding when I see people discovering they can tell a computer program what to do, when a design or
app surprises you with a wonderful experience, when we hear people that have crossed our paths very
excited to share how they have applied what they have learned at IDeaspace.
Many years ago, when I was six, I wanted to be an astronaut. I have not been to outer space yet, maybe one
day, but playing with robots, telescopes, engineering, designing, hacking and discovering is a day-to-day
occurrence at home and at work.
What’s your desert island album/book/TV show/movie (answer one or all)?:
Album, Best of David Bowie, 2002 or Kimbra’s The Golden Echo. http://www.weareota.com/intersections/2014/8/27/ota-spotlight-ludvik-herrera

Book, Carl Sagan’s Cosmos. Movie, My Neighbor Totoro by Hayao Miyasaki.
Since you live in one of the OTA states:
• Why do you choose to live here?
Because of the fish-tacos, they don’t have those in Mexico.
• What is the most beneficial aspect of living in the region when it comes to your career?
The benefit is those Doolittle’s Fish Tacos I mentioned earlier. Let’s add to it that people in the region
are discovering the value of experience design, interaction design and discerning aesthetics. I have
encountered individuals with similar passions and we’re gathering to make ideas happen.
• What’s one thing you would change about the OTA region?
Easy answer, the weather. However, the whole world and the oil industry on the west part of the state
are working on that, have you heard about global warming? Back to the one thing I’d like to change is
true openness, people do not welcome diverse opinions if it contradicts or diverges with their way of
thinking or doing things. I’d like to see true design take off. Many people think design is decoration,
let’s change that thought, design is intentional form to the function and/or content.
• What’s one thing that most people don’t know about the OTA region?
The OTA youth has amazing potential, and their education could be the best in the nation if leaders put
effort and attention to it. If we devoted the amount of funds to diverse learning opportunities and
listened to their conversations we’d be leading new discoveries and innovation. Why to lock all
children into one type of education when people are diverse? Bring variety of educational
methodologies. Some of these kids deserve fantastic education like what the STEM middle school did a
few years back in West Fargo, but unfortunately it seems to be withering away.
Where do you think good ideas come from? Good ideas come from a nice conversation, friends and allowing
ideas to bounce and brew while you’re exploring, prototyping and playing. Being a good skeptic helps
develop new ideas. If we want fantastic ideas, we must practice divergent thinking and abductive reasoning.
What’s one current trend that you think will change the world? Fracking will change the world in an awful
way. There is so much at stake with our natural resources, and a group of individuals are benefiting from
destroying the environment and wrecking the world just for their selfish benefit.
On the positive side, design thinking will also change the world because we hope to provide innovative
solutions to real world challenges.
What advice would you give to your 18-year-old self? Learn music and more languages. I will also remind

my self a quote by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, “A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there
is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”
Ludvik Herrera and Jason Gunkel, both with IDeaspace.
Who is the most creative person in your life and why? Our four children are very creative. I learn from them,
they have taught me how to stay open minded about concepts and keep a beginner’s mindset. I learn from
them, and I learn from my friends and colleagues Jason Gunkel and Saumya Singh.
Who is the most connected person in your life and what personal characteristics make him or her so wellconnected? Dean Drako, he has founded many corporations and it is through his ingenuity that he’s able to
see innovations in many fields from a little snowboard attachment, to computational processors, email
algorithms, surveillance systems and high-performance electric cars. He is very active, well spoken, knows
about programming and funding. He is a visionary. Who is the most community-focused person in your life and how do they impact their communities? My
wife, Mindy, she is helping raise our children to be mindful about the community, the environment and
education. She participates at events that help people with modest or non-existing resources. She teaches our
children and others to be mindful about waste, the environment and to live life as good individuals towards
each other and all other living creatures.
At what intersection do you live your life? Family and Creativity, in Mexico our true friends are always part

of our family.
What’s the best way to put inspiration into action? Prototyping and collaborating with other curious people.
Who do you hope to leave a legacy for? We should all leave a better-educated and livable world than what
we found as a legacy for everyone.
Who’s one regional writer/artist/leader/entrepreneur we should pay attention to? Why one? It would be
fantastic to have a list of people who are not in known-circles or self-promoters. Discovering raw and new
talented individuals is so amazing. One fantastic illustrator in the area is Kaija Thorson. Another young
individual, if I am allowed to put humility aside, is my oldest daughter Isabetta Bleu, who has been very
active in 4H, has talked at SXSW, has written many poems, has won regional film-festivals and participated
at art installations and programs at The Plains Museum since the short age of 12.
What’s the greatest risk you’ve taken? All of what we do has a risk factor, that’s how we all learn. Falling in
love, having children, buying a house, a road trip, life itself can be a risk. The greatest risk I’ve taken probably
is the one I am taking right now.
What’s your biggest failure and what did you learn from it? Failure is good, through it I have learned how to
design, to program, to create, to innovate. The biggest failure has been not taking risks. I’ve learned to take
risks and speak up. http://www.weareota.com/intersections/2014/8/27/ota-spotlight-ludvik-herrera

But it’s more than the space it occupies.
IDeaspace is an effort to encourage design thinking, collaboration across
disciplines and prototyping in students. It looks to foster innovation and creative
confidence.
Students, from NDSU as well as Concordia College, Minnesota State University
Moorhead and even K-12, work on real-world projects following a humancentered design methodology based on Stanford University’s d.school and IDEO,
a global design firm.
The student interns are able to build portfolios that demonstrate not only a
finished product, but design thinking skills and the ability to collaborate.
Kara Iliff, an architecture student at NDSU, is an intern at IDeaspace this
summer. She was excited by the group design process, which is different than
the studio experience she’s had so far.
MeiLi Smith, a senior studying sociology and women and gender studies and a
fellow intern, said she knows she’ll end up in a creative field and values the
experience in a creative environment.
“I finally felt like I found people I shared common interests with and could
collaborate with,” Smith said.
IDeaspace marked its first year last week. In that time, students have worked on
10 to 20 projects, said Ludvik Herrera, creative director for IDeaspace. They’ve
created brochures, videos, web applications, mobile applications and even little
machines. They’ve used laser cutting and 3D printing.
One of IDeaspace’s partners, the Venture Youth Alliance, will unveil its app, an
interactive map for young people, next month.
Herrera describes IDeaspace as “a place where students can go and see their

ideas implemented.”
Facilitators and mentors lead them through the design thinking process, which
Herrera stresses isn’t linear or even circular.
Its steps are:
Empathize – Observe and put yourself in someone else’s shoes to realize
what the problem is.
Define – Describe what the problem is, what the need is.
Ideate – Think of all possible solutions.
Prototype – Demonstrate your empathy by creating one ideation.
Test – Further observe to see if solution works.
While trying to find the best solution, the designer may bounce between the
steps. Failure is accepted, even encouraged.
“The whole process builds creative confidence,” said Jason Gunkel, graphic
designer for Distance and Continuing Education.
Students from West Fargo’s STEM program – science, technology, engineering
and math – have collaborated with IDeaspace. IDeaspace staff showed students
how to make infographics, another way students could display their learning.
Students have also attended events hosted by IDeaspace, said Adam Gehlhar,
assistant principal at West Fargo’s Cheney Middle School.
Gehlhar said business and industry are realizing the power of intentional design
thinking. “Really what it boils down to, it’s a good process for thinking and
coming up with new ideas,” he said.
“It definitely helps our students express their thoughts in creative ways and
come up with solutions that are hopefully going to change the world someday,”
Gehlhar said. “That’s what we’re pushing for with all our kids.”

Lisa Nordick, executive director of NDSU’s Distance and Continuing Education,
said IDeaspace is an opportunity to equip students with skills workplaces need.
It’s also a resource for faculty, she said.
IDeaspace now looks to reach out into the community more, reflecting the landgrant mission of NDSU. For example, it will host regular community events
where experts in different fields will share their creative process. The first is
scheduled from 8 to 9 a.m. July 30.
Creating had often been left alone to specific studios or companies, but design
thinking “can be implemented at any organization,” Herrera said.
“There is a need for this now in every organization,” he said. “We’re glad to be
providing it.”

Connecting kids: Godoo app aims to link
children to programs
By Sherri Richards on Jul 9, 2014 at 5:31 p.m.
MOORHEAD – A new mobile app to help children find out about events and
programs in the community was unveiled Wednesday.
The app is called godoo, as in “go do something.” It’s currently available for free
in the App Store. An Android version will be released soon.
Godoo was created through a partnership between Venture Youth Alliance, an

organization that connects youth programs, agencies, businesses and schools
across Fargo-Moorhead, and North Dakota State University IDeaspace, an
interdisciplinary space that fosters creative confidence through design thinking.
It received funding from the Alex Stern Family Foundation.
Karen Olson, director of Venture Youth Alliance, said the main reason kids give
for not taking part in programming is that they don’t know about it.
“We market to adults, not kids,” she said.
She said the goal is to remove barriers from kids participating in the community.
“We want you to be active. We want you to be engaged. This is a way for you to
find out what’s close to you,” Olson told youth at the unveiling event.
She said the app had been two years in the making, as kids in Venture Youth
Alliance’s summer program mapped the community, including programs and bus
routes, creating a Youth Compass available online at
www.ventureyouthalliance.com/youth (http://www.ventureyouthalliance.com/youth) .
By layering that information with census data, the group was able to show areas
where there were high populations of youth and few activities.
One direct relationship that was born out of looking at that information was the
Club at Horn Park, a new Boys and Girls Club program site at First Presbyterian
Church in south Moorhead, where the event was held Wednesday.
The app has taken that information a step further, Olson said.
Users can search by what they want to do – topics such as art, music, eat,
hangout and school activities – or by how they feel.
The app shows the distance to local places, including parks, pools, gyms,
museums, libraries and churches. Summer feeding program sites and other

services are also mapped.
Ludvik Herrera, creative director of IDeaspace, said the feelings-based
navigation will show activities that will aide those types of emotions. If the user
indicates he or she is extremely angry, frustrated or sad, a prompt to call
FirstLink, a nonprofit human service agency, pops up.
An emergency button allows the user to send his or her location to four
programmed contacts, such as parents or grandparents.
Olson said five pilot cities plan to use the app platform created here, including
New Orleans, Louisville, Ky., and Rapid City, S.D.

INSIGHTS
While collaborating online allows us all to build global solutions, local
Meetups help build social bonds and form new collaborations as well. We're
looking for a small number of people to join us in person to have some fun,
practice 'design thinking', meet each other and start social connections for
social good around local and regional challenges and the OpenIDEO
platform. Join us to help form specific community goals locally for our
group, whether it is to test out some of our favorite ideas from past
OpenIDEO challenges or to have a deeper discussion and share it back
with the global community.
