Carefree living at The Elms
Whether you are travelling in a caravan,
motorhome, campervan, camper trailer,
fifth wheeler or a tent, travelling around
Australia and the joys of the open road has
been a popular past time for many older
Australians including some of our residents
at The Elms.
We currently have several residents at
The Elms who own a caravan and one
couple with a motorhome. They all travel at
different times of the year and to a variety
of locations. One couple have recently
headed off to Broome for 5 months, another
have travelled for a 2 month holiday to the
Sunshine Coast, and another couple are
heading off next year to cross the Nullarbor
Plain.
While their holiday ‘rigs’ and travel
destinations are different, the residents
at The Elms all share a common benefit –
and that is carefree living. There is total
flexibility with being able to pack up and
head off on holiday knowing their homes
are secure, and with maintenance taken
care of they can enjoy their holiday without
worry.
The Elms villas are designed to lock-up and
leave, with excellent security, as well as the

Welcome
Welcome to The Elms Spring Edition. In this issue we invite you to our Spring Open Day where Stage 4 is ‘blooming’ with
new residents and spacious new display villas. We feature the benefits of carefree living at The Elms including
travelling without worry and resident satisfaction in overall lifestyle. Plus we share resident Val’s story about her move to
The Elms, present our feature villa The Ironbark and catch up on recent events. Enjoy this colourful start to the new season!
Construction update
Ten homes are now completed in Stage 4
and construction of a further 10 homes
commenced in early August. Four homes
have welcomed their new residents with
another ‘move-in’ just a few weeks away.
The new residents are very happy with the
location of their villas being close to the
facilities.
There are currently three newly built homes
available now and open for inspection. Two
new display homes each with their own
unique layout are available to view (see
our Spring Open Day invitation on the front
page) with a third display villa showing a
new layout to be available from the end of
September.
Stripping of the site for installation of
underground services and the road for the
balance of the village has commenced now
that the weather is improving and should
proceed with haste over the coming months.
‘A gateway to new worlds’
For 55 years ‘Kilmorites’ Valerie Ryan and her
husband lived in a five-bedroom home on
four acres of land. When Valerie’s husband
died in early 2013 it was impossible for her
to continue living there on her own; time to
downsize.
The Elms had not been on Valerie’s list of new
home options, “I didn’t think a retirement
village would suit me”, she said. “But I heard
a villa had become available. Out of curiosity
I came down with one of my daughters just
to have a look. It was a freezing winter’s day,
I walked in - the sun was streaming into the
lovely large living area. I took one look and
said to my daughter ‘I have found my new
home’, and immediately put down a deposit”.
Valerie could never imagine what changes
the move would make to her life.
The Elms resident Val enjoying her African holiday
Six months after moving in, financially freed
from the demands of the ageing family
home, she accompanied her sister and
brother-in-law on a 28 day African safari.
They had truly amazing experiences
including witnessing the migrating masses
of animals from the Serengeti plains, gliding
over the park in a large hot air balloon,
staying on the rim of the Ngorongoro crater,
hovering over Victoria Falls in a helicopter
and having an encounter with a large herd
of elephants that surrounded their car when
both parties were heading for a waterhole!
“We saw an amazing number of animals
including the ‘Big Five’– lion, elephant,
buffalo, leopard and rhino - both black and
white.”
“None of this would have been possible had
I not sold up and moved into The Elms”, said
Valerie.
Where next? It seems to be a toss up between
South America and Europe. “I would really
like to do the trip from Paris to Prague”, she
mused.

Resident satisfaction –
Retirement living a breeze amongst the trees
Satisfaction at The Elms
At The Elms, the moment you move in,
everything is already in place. Apart from
the strong sense of security you’ll feel from
living here, you’ll also feel a real sense of
community with like-minded neighbours.
With an amazing Country Club with its
enviable facilities you can spend more time
enjoying life and leave the maintenance and
house responsibilities to us.
You have so many reasons to look forward
to living at The Elms Retirement Estate. But
rather than take our word for it, a recent
national survey confirms that moving in to a
retirement village not only has many benefits
but is also a very satisfying experience.
The McCrindle Baynes Villages Census
Report completed last year generated an
accurate profile of prospective residents
for retirement villages, the decision drivers
and the resulting experience of village
participants. The results were a 94% overall
satisfaction rate with 91% of residents finding
their overall happiness increased or stayed
the same since moving in to a retirement
village.
Push and Pull factors
Based on the Census, one of the top reasons
residents chose to leave their previous
home (Push factor) was freedom from
house responsibilities to be able to pursue
other interests. And one of the top reasons
for choosing their particular village (Pull
factor) was to be in a safe environment with
emergency support and on-site maintenance.
The Elms certainly fits in with the results
of the survey providing positive outcomes
and giving residents the satisfaction they
deserve.
A range of villa designs give you a choice
of layout, features and accommodation that
works best for your individual needs. The
villas have energy-saving lighting, a costsaving telephone system, and there are no
more expensive utility bills. You’ll be able
to do exactly what you want because the
main gardens and major maintenance are
managed for you. Let us worry about the
chores, so you can get on with enjoying your
retirement.

A piece of history Recent Events
Kilmore
‘Just a day’s horse ride from Melbourne... ‘
Centred on Victoria’s oldest inland settled town, the
Kilmore district is steeped in the history of farming,
commerce, education, timber-getting, gold-mining and
horse-racing. Once considered just a day’s horse ride from
Melbourne on the busy Melbourne-Sydney Road, Kilmore
is now just under an hour’s relaxing drive into the country
from central Melbourne.
The early settlers were English, Scottish and Irish and
they set up a diverse community which was pre-eminent
in the 1840s and 1850s.
For those seeking a move out of the big city, this is a
location that truly – in every sense – affords you a lifestyle
without equal. Kilmore sits at the geographic heart of
Victoria, putting you right in the middle of everything our
state has to offer in any direction.
Kilmore offers so much you’ll appreciate, along with
everything you’ll need. From its rich history, cheery cafés,
bakeries and country pubs, to the Kilmore Hospital and
the local shopping centre as well as nearby Wallan.
Residents dancing the night away
Supper dance
A night of dancing and entertainment was a huge success back on a
winter’s evening at The Elms where residents enjoyed their very own
supper dance.
Over 40 residents and guests enjoyed the live band ‘Just Us’, a comedy
skit by Glenyce Silvio who did a great impression of Susan Boyle and
a fantastic supper provided by the residents themselves. Residents
danced the night away and hope to repeat the event in future.
With the Elms Retirement Estate situated at the southern
entrance to Kilmore township, and a village bus providing
regular trips into town, you’ll have the best of both worlds
and a wonderful lifestyle to enjoy.

Cooking classes
Residents at The Elms have been cooking up a storm in recent weeks
undertaking a catering course with Village Manager, Janice Edwards.
RRVV President Visits The Elms
Once a fortnight the class covers a variety of foods such as meat,
seafood, pastas and salads. At the completion of the course the residents
and Janice will achieve their Certificate III in Hospitality (Commercial
Cookery). The classes have been very enjoyable so far with the team
producing some wonderful meals such as vietnamese chicken salad
with dressing, and homemade gnocchi with veal scaloppini. This is a
great example of one of many activities on offer at The Elms, and as
Janice confirmed the best is yet to come - which can only mean desserts!
“RRVV also had the pleasure of visiting the beautiful village
of ‘The Elms’ at Kilmore. A great village with beautiful
facilities and happy residents. It is such a pleasure for us
to see how a retirement village should work. Good owners
and caring management. Congratulations to you all.”
