Iowa Alumni Chapter
Retains Top Spot
he Iowa
Alumni
Chapter was
named “Chapter of
the Year” at the 2008
Alumni Leadership
Bulldog Forever
Conference held
during Homecoming
on Oct. 3, 2008.
The Iowa Chapter has earned the top chapter honor
numerous times.
According to the Iowa Chapter president, Cindy
Spiker (’93), the chapter tries to host a variety of events
each year, and they set their calendar early so alumni
know when to expect the events. They also mix in
several annual events such as the Iowa Student SendOff, I-Cubs Baseball and Picnic, Drake/Truman athletic
events and a banquet, just to name a few. One of last
year’s most popular events was the True Men Concert
and Alumni Reception held last spring in Ottumwa,
Iowa, and the chapter hopes to make it an annual event.
Each year, Truman alumni chapters have an
opportunity to earn points through the Honor Chapter
System established by the Truman Alumni Association.
Chapters are given points for tasks and activities such as
taking an active role in planning and hosting chapter
events, increasing membership, providing communications to members, holding officer meetings, and
conducting service projects. For 2008, several other
chapters were close in point totals to the Iowa Chapter
and hope to earn the top spot in 2009!

Send-off Tradition
Lives On
ruman’s alumni chapters
and clubs continue the
tradition of student send-off
events in areas of the country that
have high Truman student populations. Send-offs were hosted last
July and August in Chicago, Ill.;
Columbia, Mo.; Dallas, Texas;
Des Moines, Iowa; Kansas City,
Mo., Kirksville, Mo.; Springfield,
Mo.; and St. Louis, Mo.
Incoming Truman students had
the opportunity to interact with
current students from their areas
as well as alumni, faculty and
staff from Truman. Family
members and students took
advantage of question and
answer periods and numerous
door prizes were given away. In
addition, several alumni chapters
presented scholarships to
students at the events held in
Dallas, Kansas City,
Columbia/Mid-Missouri,
Kirksville/Northeast Missouri,
and St. Louis. The Chicago and
Iowa Alumni Chapters also fund
chapter scholarships, and the
Mid-Atlantic Alumni Chapter is
working toward endowing a
scholarship.
