Mass Intentions & Memorial Candles
If you would like to have a Mass offered for a particular
Intention or for someone who has died, or if you would like to
dedicate a candle to an intention or a loved one, please call the
parish office. The stipend for the Mass is $10. The candles are
$30 for 1 month, $60 for 6 months, or $90 for one year. Our
office staff will help you find an open date and time for a Mass,
or available candles for dedications.
Unity versus division. This Gospel pericope is a hard topic. It is difficult
because most of us don’t want to talk about division given the reality of what
we experience around us. Division is commonplace; unity is an ideal.
The Gospel illustrates that division can happen even in a venue where unity
must prevail. In a household of five (5), three (3) will be against two (2) and
two (2) will be against three (3). Notice the repetition?
Division happens everywhere and no one is exempt from it even the most
peace loving communities.
Lou Nicholes tells his own experience of division, which goes this way:
“I once had a pastor who was having trouble with one of his deacons. He
came to my house one day and wanted me to come to a meeting and take
sides against the deacon. I told the pastor I could not do that because I didn’t
have any problem with the deacon. The pastor became very angry and said he
would have nothing more to do with me and further more he would tell every
Christian leader in the area what a terrible person I was, which he proceeded to do for several years. We were
sitting in his car and when I suggested that we pray together about the matter and he said he would not pray
with me and for me not to tell anyone he wouldn’t pray. Then he told me to get out of his car and he spun out
of the driveway throwing gravel all over me and my house. When he got to his office he called me and said he
meant every word of what he said. Thinking he had just had a bad moment we continued to attend his church
but when our family would leave the services he would turn his back on us so we felt it best to find another
place to worship.”
The most common reason of division is any failure to meet each others’ minds. In our conflict of
opinions, our tendency is to stand our ground and defend what we believe is right and true. If we become
unreasonable in our defense of our truth and stubbornly refuse to listen to others and meet them in between,
and deny the established truth, we cause a bad rift.

How and where does division exist? A sign that there is division: all the time, we try to make unity
work in all units of society. I think the rejection of absolute truths causes this trouble. True is true is true.
However, relativism has plagued our societies brought about by a contemporary culture making it hard for
absolute truths to be effective. This contemporary culture uses advocacies such as equality, pro-choice, etc.
Unfortunately, these advocacies have penetrated the religions most especially the Catholic Church. Just
recently, we have learned about our Catholic brethren being staunch defenders of relative truths like abortion
and gay marriage.
The Church remains strong in her position: One cannot be Catholic and pro-choice.

The Church celebrates Monday the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary. We will have a celebration
of the feast during the regular daily Mass schedule. I would like to encourage you all to come to the Mass and
celebrate the feast day of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

día y quería que fuera a una reunión y tomar parte contra el diácono. Le dije al pastor que no podía hacer eso
porque yo no tenía ningún problema con el diácono. El pastor se enojó mucho y dijo que no tendría nada más
que ver conmigo y aún más que le diría a todos los líderes cristianos en el área de que yo era una persona terrible, y lo hizo por varios años. Un día estábamos sentados en su coche y le sugerí que oremos juntos sobre ese
asunto él dijo que no iba a rezar conmigo y me dijo que no dijera a nadie que él no quiso orar conmigo. Entonces me dijo que saliera de su coche y se fue de la calzada de grava quemando llantas y lanzando gravas sobre
mí y mi casa. Cuando llegó a su oficina me llamó y me dijo que no fue su intención hacer y decir lo que dijo.
De que había tenido un mal día y que continuáramos asistiendo su iglesia, pero cuando nuestra familia dejara
de servir que él nos daría la espalda y que seria mejor para nosotros encontrar otro lugar o iglesia para adorar
“.
La razón más común de la división es que cualquier incumplimiento de las mentes de los demás. En
nuestro conflicto de opiniones, nuestra tendencia es defender nuestra postura y defender lo que creemos que es
correcto y verdadero. Si llegamos a ser razonables en la defensa de nuestra verdad y obstinadamente nos
negamos a escuchar a los demás estar y reunirnos con los demás, y negar la verdad establecida, nos causa una
mala grieta.

¿Cómo y en dónde existe la división? Una señal de que hay división: todo el tiempo, tratamos de hacer
la unidad en todas las unidades de la sociedad. Creo que el rechazo de las verdades absolutas causan este

La Iglesia celebra este Lunes la solemnidad de la Asunción de María. Tendremos la celebración de la
festividad de Maria durante el horario de misa diaria que es a las 8:30am. Me gustaría animar a todos a venir y

A big thank you to everyone who helped with Vacation Bible School this week. We had
almost 60 participants and another 40 youth volunteers willing to "FOLLOW HIM" this
week! What a great joy to see such a large youth presence in our church! Thank you also
to all those who ran a station, helped with snacks, took attendance, were willing to help
wherever needed, or donated to VBS. It was overwhelming to see the amount of food
and supplies given toward the success of this program. We are all truly blessed by your
caring and generosity!
Registration for Religious Education is now open. You can find the forms on the Faith Formation Board in the church, online or at the parish office. Religious Education is for children from age 3 through 5th grade. Registration is also open for the First Eucharist/First
Reconciliation classes. Classes will begin on Sunday, September 25. The cost for First Eucharist is $60. The cost for all other elementary level classes is $30. If you have questions

Carlson. Amelia is a convert to the Catholic faith. She is a journalist and have reaped awards in various categories of journalism. She is dedicated to help Catholics know the rich and beautiful tradition of the Catholic
faith. In this article, she explored the reasons why the Catholic Church is the one true Church.
FIVE REASONS THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IS THE TRUE CHURCH

There are many reasons the Roman Catholic Church is the true Church of Jesus Christ, however, some
of those reasons are necessary for discussions with those outside the Catholic Church. Jesus prayed for unity of
believers and unity begins with understanding. The understanding of the Church’s beliefs is essential in working toward that unity. Here are some key reasons to keep in mind when speaking to non-Catholics:
1.) Authority- Jesus gave specific instructions regarding dealing with members of the Church who
were in sin. Matthew 18:15-18 says “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you
and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother. If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that ‘every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ If he
refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would
a Gentile or a tax collector. Amen, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and
whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” What Evangelical/Protestant Church has the authority
to remove someone completely from the church? None. If an individual is removed from a ‘congregation’ then
he/she can go down the street and join another ‘congregation’ of the same denomination. The congregations
are individualized and have no authority outside their own denomination. That is not true with the Catholic
Church. If removed from the Catholic Church, one cannot go to another city and join another Catholic Parish.
2.) History- The Roman Catholic Church is the oldest and original Christian Church, therefore, the beliefs and teachings of the Church were directly passed onto the leaders of the Catholic Church by the apostles.
The Catholic Church began with the teachings of Jesus Christ, around 1st Century AD in the province of Judea
of the Roman Empire. The Catholic Church is the continuation of the early Christian community established
by Jesus and no modern Christian Church can make that claim. By the end of the 2nd century, bishops began
congregating in regional synods and to correct doctrinal and policy issues and by the time the 3rd century
came around, the Bishop of Rome (Pope) served as the decisive authority, kind of like a court of appeals, for
problems and issues the bishops could not resolve. This is identical to the Bible’s teaching. In Exodus 18 we
see where the children of Israel brought their disputes to Moses and Moses settled those disputes. However, it
also shows where leaders appointed by Moses also worked to settle disputes.
The Catholic Church remained the only Christian Church until the East-West Schism of 1054, which
caused medieval Christianity to split and become two separate branches. The greatest division, however, came
during the Reformation from 1517-1648, led by Martin Luther. The East-West (Great) Schism was caused by
Patriarch Michael I. According to Titus 3:9-11, the divisions led by Patriarch Michael I and Martin Luther
were sin. “Avoid foolish arguments, genealogies, rivalries, and quarrels about the law, for they are useless and
futile. After a first and second warning, break off contact with a heretic, realizing that such a person is perverted and sinful and stands self-condemned.”
3.) The Catholic Church gave Christians the Bible- The first official list of books contained is what
is the Bible was done at the Council of Hippo in 393 and then again in Carthage in 397 and 419. However, the
Council of Trent in 1556 was the first time the Church infallibly defined these books as ‘inspired’ because it
was questioned by Reformers. We have to admit, the apostles did not walk around with nice leather bound Bi-
bles in their hand. There are many parts of the Bible that are oral tradition which was written down because
when early believers attended the Synagogue or church, the scripture was read. They did not have their own
copy with their name engraved on the front. Oral tradition was the norm of practice long before writing and
reading was a part of life. The Jews followed the Old Testament before Jesus was born and Jesus is pictured in
Scripture reading from the Old Testament in the Synagogue. There were multiple writings from this time but it
was only after the list of books determined to be the ‘inspired Word of God’ by the Catholic Church first with
the Council of Hippo in 393 that the world had what is called “The Bible”. The Bible remained the original 73
books determined by the Catholic Church until the Reformation, when Martin Luther threw out 7 books of the
Old Testament that disagreed with his personal view of theology…the same Old Testament adhered to by the
Jews. He threw these 6 books out in the 16th Century. Luther also attempted to throw out New Testament
books James, Hebrews, Jude and Revelation. In referring to James, he said he wanted to ‘throw Jimmy into the
fire’ and the book of James was ‘an epistle of straw’ with no usefulness. After Pope Damasus I approved the
27 New Testament Books however in 382 AD, Luther agreed with the Pope and accepted the New Testament
books but denied the Old Testament books …which remained out of his Bible. Non-Catholics will accept the
Biblical books which are contained in the Protestant Bible but do not acknowledge they are accepting and
trusting the authority of the Catholic Church because the Catholic Church was the one who proclaimed the entire list, as a whole, as ‘inspired’. The letters within the Bible are not the only letters and materials written by
the Apostles so, as a result, those contained within the Bible had to be declared ‘inspired’ and it was the Catholic Church which did that duty.
4.) The Sacraments are Biblical- The Apostles were given the power to ‘forgive sins’ in John 20:23,
Peter taught in I Peter 3:21 that ‘baptism now saves you’, ‘anointing the sick with oil was shown in James 5:14
-15, laying on of hands in Acts 8:17 and 2 Timothy 1:6, marriage in the Lord in I Corinthians 7:39 and Jesus
stated numerous times that the disciples should participate in the breaking of bread (Eucharist) by stating ‘he
who eats my flesh has eternal life’.
5.) Sola Scriptura is not supported in the Bible- It is difficult to make a claim such as Sola Scriptura
(The Bible Alone) when, in its very essence, the claim must be written within the Bible in order to be Biblical.
The concept of “Bible Alone” says it is not truth if it is not contained in the Bible, therefore removing
‘tradition’, but the Bible refutes that principle. Jeremiah 25:3 says the “Word of the Lord” is “spoken”, not just
written. Paul told us to hold to our traditions, which are taught by word and mouth or by letter, according to 2
Thess 2:15. The Bible also portrays where a Council was held to settle doctrinal disputes in Acts 15. (Who else
has a Council to settle doctrine disputes and holds the authority to do such other than the Catholic Church?)
The Bible also warns about ‘twisted’ interpretations of Scripture in 2 Peter 3:16 and I Timothy 3:15 says THE
CHURCH is the pillar and the bulwark of the truth. The Catholic Church has one teaching…one unified teaching…as opposed to the now 43,000 evangelical (Protestant) groups currently established, with 2.3 added each
day. Their views on everything from the Trinity, homosexuality, abortion, and salvation all contradict each
other. Truth cannot be false at the same time and Truth cannot contradict each other.

local children. This will be the last week to fill the barrels, so if you

St. Vincent De Paul will hand out school supplies and backpacks to
those who have preregistered for them on Aug. 22nd, 4-6pm. Please
donate items for our local kids. Put the items in the barrels located
in the church entry ways. If your children need school supplies or
backpacks please sign up at the St. Vincent De Paul store or in the
church office. If you have any questions, please contact St Vincent

Parish Spotlight
The English Adult Choir practices every Wednesday at 7pm in the church. We sing at the
Saturday 5pm & Sunday 8:30am & 11am Masses. We stay very flexible. Often members
have a Mass they usually sing at, but they are willing to cover another Mass if there are too
few singers on a given weekend. We verify who will sing at which Mass after each practice
each week.
Our Hispanic Choir works the same way, and we practice Tuesday nights at 7pm in the
church. We sing for the Saturday 7pm & Sunday 1pm Masses.
We have a bilingual children's choir. Our first practice will be Wednesday, August 24th at
6pm in the church. We will have our schedule of practices and Masses for you at that
rehearsal.

Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven (1Cor2:9) – Solemnity, Aug 15
“Mary is assumed into Heaven and Her Heart is made forever one with the Heart of Jesus. These two Hearts beat
as one. Where Jesus is, Mary is also. She is called Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament. The Heart of Mary is the
door WHICH LEADS US DIRECTLY TO JESUS. She is the gate through which we enter His Sacred Heart. Each
‘Hail Mary’ we pray opens our heart to His love and leads us INTO A DEEPER UNION WITH THE EUCHARISTIC HEART OF JESUS. “Happy are those invited to the wedding feast of the lamb.’ (Rev 19:9) …By perpetual
Eucharistic Adoration, earth unites with Heaven, ‘day and night’. We come before God and ‘minister to the lamb on
the throne.’ (Rev 7: 15-17) Here Jesus draws us to Himself and detaches us from the things of earth that we may
yearn for the things of Heaven, Where everyone will be united in the bosom of the Holy Trinity, and be made one

Spirituality of Peace Making Class
Following Summer break, the class entitled "Spirituality of Peace Making" will resume.
Date: September 12, 2016 thru May 29th, 2017.

Outline: This class will investigate the seemingly insurmountable challenges of trying to live a life
of hope-filled peace in a world filled with terror, suffering and despair.
We will study models of peace from Sacred Scripture, Saints from ages past as well as
contemporary Saints and Martyrs, all of whom mustered their (and our) Christian Mission of
bringing Peace into a darkened world. Pope Francis' Encyclical "Laudato Si", as well as his
teachings during this "Year of Mercy" will be amongst the guiding principles to be studied
(and lived).

Coats for Kids Breakfast
With many families continuing to struggle in these challenging economic times, there
has never been a better time for you to support your Knights of Columbus council and
help provide warm winter coats to children. Because of St. Mary’s generosity the last
three years, we’ve been able to raise enough money to purchase 216 coats. The
Knights of Columbus have raised funds to purchase these new Coats. These winter
coats are provided to families who need help, free of charge . The winter months are
coming and we need your help to raise money to purchase the Coats for Kids this
year. August 28th, the Knights will be serving a breakfast after the 8:30 am Mass
and the 11 am Mass in the Gathering Space. Come and enjoy yourselves with friends,
neighbors and family while supporting this very worthy cause.
We work with St Mary’s and community resources to determine where the greatest needs are and hope to distribute them around Thanksgiving.

High School Seniors
Eighty percent of students stop practicing their faith at some point during college. To help students stay connected to
our Catholic faith, we are asking students who are seniors and going on to college to fill out a form (to be found in the
vestibule) and mail it to The Newman Connection, 902 West Main Street, Teutopolis, Il 62467. The form will be sent
