“Why Do I Have to Buy Flood Insurance?”
Flood Protection Projects Past and Future
Flood protection is a lot
like a puzzle. Every piece is
important, and every time
you put another piece in
place, you move closer to
completing the puzzle.
We have begun putting
this puzzle together by
laying the groundwork for
future flood improvements that will remove
properties in North Shoreview and North Central
from the FEMA “high risk”
flood zone.
What are those important,
less visible pieces that
helped flood protect North
Central and North Shoreview?
1. Caltrans increased culvert capacity using State
funds. This project increases flood capacity for
both sides of Third Ave.
2. With a federal grant, we
raised the bridge over Norfolk Street to allow storm
water to flow more freely.
3. With local Redevelopment funds, we built a
flood wall North of SM
Creek.
4. Again with local Redevelopment funds, we built
a piece of the flood wall
just at the mouth of SM
Creek.
Page 3
December 2012
5. Designed required improvements to the Poplar
Pump Station and completed interim improvements to improve the reliability of the Pump Station.
How far do we have to go
to complete this puzzle?
The image below is of future improvements that
the City will complete
once funding sources are
identified to pay for these
important projects.
At this time, we lack the
funding and therefore, a
timeline to share on when
we think we can reach this
goal. We will continue to
identify funding for these
projects.
The recent unexpected
flooding in New Jersey and
New York, and the devastation left in the wake of
Hurricane Sandy helps to
answer the question,
“Why do I have to buy
flood insurance?”

tional Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policy.
Much of our City is considered
susceptible to a 100 year
storm because many areas are
at least one foot below the
base flood elevation. Through
the Levee Project, the City
built flood protection infrastructure that met federal
standards. By meeting federal
standards, properties south of
San Mateo Creek were removed from the SFHA.
Again, our future goal is to
build similar flood projection
projects that will meet federal
standards and remove your
area from the SFHA.
