The Lord’s authority
Children are always taught to obey. In the beginning, perhaps it is
more of a blind obedience, “because I said so and I am your father” …
There is not much reasoning. Quite simply, this is what we have been
told and it is what we do, even if it is objectively absurd.
Fortunately for many---but unfortunately not for everyone---as time
passes the conscience is formed; it begins distinguishing between good
and evil, and the reasoning why certain rules and verdicts must be
followed. And then the only authority that is obeyed is the one to who
moral authority has been given. In other words, the one who earned
respect and is recognized as a legitimate leader.
In today’s readings, the development of what is authority and what is
due respect is given. In the fist reading the disciples refused to obey the
orders from the Supreme Council because they have heard a voice that
deserves not only their respect and trust, but their love. They have seen
a a man who has died and was resurrected for them. Convinced that
they had received the authority from the Holy Spirit, they must
proclaim it, even if such a proclamation did not fit within the scope of
Jewish law.
They have known a higher law. In th4e second reading, from the book
of Revelation, the one who has won trust and authority through his
sacrifice is presented. The Lamb of God, sacrificed for everyone, now
has all the power. A lamb is not precisely an important authority figure,
but in this case the paradox of Christ is joined: whoever wants to be
first, will be last; whoever wants to save his life will lose it...Only an
authority such as this one, are we able to and should follow.
Finally, it is an authority that earns trust and respect through
forgiveness, reconciliation, and love. Next to the lake, Jesus encounters
those who had betrayed and denied him. The sign of eating with them is
a symbol of reconciliation and healing. There is a generous and silent
forgive4nss. Btu prior to their meal he asked them to cast their nets, and
although the order might have seemed absurd since Jesus did not know
much about fishing and they had already been fishing all night, they
obeyed because they recognized him as their Lord. Peter had denied
him three times, yet Jesus asked him three times if he loved him. In this
beautiful act of reconciliation, he is entrusted with authority over the
community of Jesus, the church.
We may consider that these are events that have little to do with our
lives, but for us, as well as for the disciples in Jerusalem, or those
disciples at the edge of the lake, it has to do with recognizing the loving
presence that is filled with the Lord’s authority in our lives. He appears
in such simple acts as having breakfast with the disciples, in the
fortitude we receive to continue with our work, in the signs of life that
conquers death around us, in the impulses that the Spirit puts in us to
do good, and in the acts of reconciliation that we are offered or initiate
each day. And we see it in the decisions we make, and in how we reflect
what we are going to obey. We see it when we hear in the depths of our
consciousness the course of action we must take. We see it when we
refuse to let ourselves be governed by fashion, by the desire to consume,
and to possess material things. In all this, we find the risen Lord, the one
who gave his life for us and thus earned our respect and trust. The only
one who must be obeyed without hesitation. The only one whose word
is always trustworthy.
For reflection
Who deserves my trust? To whom have I granted moral authority?
Who do I obey without hesitation? When have I denied Christ with
my actions? What does he say to me today when he sits next to me
to eat? What did he ask? How many times does he ask?

FATHER FLYNN … was a popular and well-beloved priest here at St.
Raymond’s for many years … he was assigned to the parish and also
was a Guidance Counselor in the Girls’ Academy … he passed away
in September and was buried from St. Martin of Tours Church … he is
being honored on Thursday, May 2 with a blessing and dedication of
the new rooftop Court at the Academy … tickets for the blessing,
dedication and reception are $30 and include cocktails and finger food
… we are also establishing an ENDOWMENT FUND OF $100,000
for financial assistance for needy Academy students in his honor --- a
plaque will be installed and blessed on May 2 --- pledge amounts
(payable over 2 or 3 years) are $5,000, $1000 or $500 … call the
Academy for reservations and pledge information at 718-824-4220 and
speak with Sister Mary Ann at extension 1011 … tickets are also
available in the rectory … all are invited. Formal invitations are
available in the rectory or at the Academy, if you wish one.
MASS INTENTIONS … you can remember a family member or
friend with an intention at a specific Mass come to the rectory for a
specific date …the offering is $15 and Mass cards are avail- able with
each Mass … the intentions can be for a living or deceased person …
intentions are printed in the bulletin, placed on the altar and mentioned
by the priest at the Mass.
BAPTISMS … come to the rectory to receive information about the
Baptism, about church registration, Baptismal classes and preparation,
requirements for godparents … do not set a date before you speak with
the priest regarding Baptism … if you are Catholic, you should have
your child baptized and you --- as parents --- should be practicing the
Catholic faith.
MARRIAGES … come to the rectory to receive information about the
Sacrament of Matrimony … do not set a date before speaking with a
priest … if you are Catholic, you should be married in the church of
your Catholic faith, St. Raymond.
FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS … the usual practice for Catholic
burials is a wake service in a funeral home, a Funeral Mass in the
parish church, burial of the body or cremains in a cemetery (preferably
a Catholic cemetery) … speak with one of the priests for assistance
before a death occurs and speak with a reputable funeral home director
about pre-arrangements … cremains (ashes) are held in the same
reverence and respect as a body and so they should be treated
carefully, respectfully, reverentially and buried as soon as possible
after cremation.
PARISH REGISTRATIONS … if you are coming to church on
Sundays, please register in the rectory and use your envelopes … do
not just put your offering in the basket because there is no way of
keeping records about your registration, attendance, etc. in the parish
… if you forget your envelope, bring 2 next Sunday!
GOLDEN WEDDING JUBILEE MASS … at St. Patrick’s Cathedral
for those celebrating 50 years of marriage on Sunday, June 23 at 2 pm
with the Cardinal … call the Family Life Office at 212-371-1000 to

BAND REVUE … St Raymond Academy's annual BAND REVUE
will be held on Friday evening, 4/19/13 at 7pm in the School
Gymnasium (Purdy Street). A limited number of tickets can be
purchased at the door ($8). Advanced Sale tickets can be purchased at
the Academy (8:30 am - 2:30 pm) during the week of 4/8/13 and
4/15/13. Please come and support the Academy Band and enjoy a
wonderful show!
THEATER GROUP … St. Raymond Academy for Girls and St.
Raymond HS for Boys will feature the musical, DREAMGIRLS, on
Friday, 4/26/13 and Saturday, 4/27/13 beginning at 7 pm each evening
in the Academy Cafe. Tickets can be purchased at the door each
evening for $8. (Advanced tickets can be purchased at the Academy
(8:30 am - 2:30 pm) or at the rectory after April 8th. You will be able
to enter the Academy from the school parking lot and limited parking
is available. Elevator service is also available for our guests who may

BOYS HIGH SCHOOL … is honoring Father James Cruz, a graduate
of the school, and Mr. Peter Larkin, our retired CFO, at the LaSalle
Dinner on Thursday, April 25 at 6 pm at Rigoletto’s Restaurant on

dinner will be used for financial assistance at the Boys High

ANOINTING OF THE SICK … in Spanish … Saturday, April 20 at
12 noon in the Upper Church; the usual 12 noon Mass in English will
be in the Lower Church. You are encouraged to bring the elderly, the
sick and those who might be going into the hospital to this beautiful
sacrament and Mass … a great way to bring JESUS to someone who is
suffering.
HAT SUNDAY … get ready … Sunday, May 19 at all of the Masses
… Pentecost Sunday … ladies are encouraged to wear a Sunday
formal hat to church … gentlemen are encouraged to wear a hat TO

NEW GARDEN … as you have noticed, we have planted several
smaller trees, shrubs and roses between the church and the elementary
school … the trees that were taken down were becoming dangerous to
the church windows and to the school classrooms and Hurricane Sandy
convinced me SAFETY FIRST … our new garden looks beautiful and
I think it needs a name, a dedication, a blessing? Any suggestions as to
whom should receive the HONOR OF A DEDICATION? Also, if you
wish to make a donation to the garden, it will be happily accepted --please use a plain envelope with your name and envelope number on it
and drop it in the collection basket or leave at the rectory. Thank you.

pueden ser para una persona viva o difunta … intenciones son
impresas en el boletín, colocados en el altar y mencionadas por el
sacerdote en la Misa.
BAUTISMOS … venir a la rectoría para recibir información sobre el
Bautismo, acerca de la registración en la iglesia, clases y preparación
Bautismales, requisitos para padrinos … no elegir una fecha antes de
hablar con el sacerdote con respecto al Bautismo … si usted es
católico, debe tener a su niño bautizado
CASAMIENTOS … venir a la rectoría para recibir información sobre
el Sacramento del Matrimonio … no elegir una fecha antes de hablar
con el sacerdote … si es católico, usted debe estar casado en la iglesia
de su fe católica, San Ramón.
ARREGLOS FUNEBRES … la práctica usual para entierros católicos
es un servicio velatorio en una funeraria, una Misa Fúnebre en la
iglesia parroquial, el entierro del cuerpo o restos en un cementerio
(preferiblemente un cementerio católico) … hablar con uno de los
sacerdotes para asistencia antes que una muerte ocurra y hablar con un
director acreditado de funeraria acerca de arreglos por adelantado …
los restos (las cenizas) deben recibir la misma reverencia y respeto
como un cuerpo y por eso deben ser tratados con cuidado,
respetuosamente, reverencialmente y enterrados tan pronto como sea
posible después de la cremación.
REGISTRACION EN LA PARROQUIA … si usted viene a la iglesia
los domingos, por favor registrarse en la rectoría y utilizar sus sobres
… no poner solamente su ofrenda en la canasta porque no hay manera
de llevar registros acerca de su registración, asistencia, etc. en la
parroquia … si usted olvida su sobre, traiga 2 sobres el próximo
domingo!
MISA JUBILEE PARA ANIVERSARIOS DE BODA DE ORO… en
la Catedral de San Patricio para esos celebrando 50 años de casamiento
el domingo, 23 de junio a las 2 pm con el Cardenal…llamar a la

REVISTA MUSICAL DE LA BANDA … el show anual de la Banda
de la Academia de San Ramón será el viernes en la noche 4/19/13 a las
7 pm en el Gimnasio de la Escuela (Purdy Street). Un número limitado
de boletos puede ser comprado en la puerta ($8). Los boletos por
adelantado pueden ser comprados en la Academia (8:30 am-2:30 pm)

EL GRUPO DE TEATRO … de la Academia de Chicas de San

las 7 pm cada noche en el Café de la Academia. Los boletos pueden

UNCION DE LOS ENFERMOS … en español … el sábado, 20 de
abril a las 12 del mediodía en la Iglesia Superior; la usual Misa de las
12 del mediodía en inglés estará en la Iglesia de Abajo. Usted está
animado a traer a personas mayores, los enfermos y los que quizás
vayan a visitar al hospital a este hermoso sacramento y Misa … una
gran manera de traer a JESUS a alguien que sufre.
DOMINGO DE SOMBRERO … prepararse … el domingo, 19 de
mayo en todas las Misas … Domingo de Pentecostés … las damas son
animadas a llevar un sombrero formal de domingo a la iglesia … los
caballeros son animados a llevar un sombrero a la IGLESIA pero no
en iglesia! Vamos a vestirnos para el Espíritu Santo --- rojo es un gran

NUEVO JARDIN … como ha notado, hemos plantado varios árboles
más pequeños, arbustos y rosas entre la iglesia y la escuela primaria …
los árboles que fueron tumbados estaban convertiėndose en un
peligroso para las ventanas de la iglesia y las aulas de la escuela y el
Huracán Sandy me convenció SEGURIDAD PRIMERO … nuestro
nuevo jardín está hermoso y pienso que necesita un nombre, una
dedicación, una bendición? ¿Cualquier sugerencia en cuanto a quién
deben recibir el HONOR DE UNA DEDICACION? También, si desea
hacer un donativo al jardín, será aceptado felizmente --- utilizar por
favor un sobre simple con su nombre y número de sobre y dejar en la

La autoridad del Señor
A los niños siempre se les enseña a obedecer. Al principio,
quizá se trate de una obediencia ciega. “Porque te lo digo yo,
que soy tu padre”…No hay mucho razonamiento. Simplemente,
esto se nos ha dicho y esto hacemos, aunque objetivamente sea
absurdo.
Para suerte de muchos---desgraciadamente, no todos---a
medida que pasa el tiempo se va formando la conciencia; se va
distinguiendo entre le bien y el mal y se van viendo las razones
para seguir ciertas reglas o dictámenes. Y se obedece entonces
únicamente, a aquella autoridad a quien se le ha dado una
autoridad moral. Es decir, a quien se ha Ganado el respeto y a
quien se reconoce como líder legítimo.
En las lecturas de hoy se da todo un desarrollo de lo que es la
autoridad y de lo que es el respeto debido. En la primera lectura
los discípulos se niegan a obedecer las órdenes del Consejo
Supremo porque han escuchado una voz que les merece, no sólo
respeto y confianza, sino amor. Han visto a quien ha muerto y
resucitado por ellos. Y están convencidos, porque han recibido
la autoridad del Espíritu Santo, de que deben proclamarlo
aunque tal proclamación alta. En la segunda lectura, del
Apocalipsis, se presenta a quien se ha ganado la confianza y la
autoridad por su sacrificio. El Cordero de Dios, sacrificado por
todos, tiene ahorra todo el poder. Un cordero no es
precisamente una figura impotente de autoridad, pero en este
caso uno así la paradoja de Cristo: el que quiera ser el primero,
que sea el último, quien quiera ganar su vida la perderá … Es
solamente una autoridad así la que podemos y debemos seguir.
Por ultimo, es una autoridad que se gana la confianza y el
respeto por el perdón, la reconciliación y el amor. Junto al lago,
Jesús se encuentra con quienes lo habían traicionado y negado.
El signo de comer con ellos es un signo de reconciliación y
sanación. Hay un perdón generoso y silencioso. Pero antes les
pide que echen las redes, y, aunque la orden podría parecer
absurda, ya que Jesús no sabia mucho de pescar y ellos habían
pescado toda la noche, obedecen, porque lo reconocen como un
señor. Pedro había negado tres veces a Jesús y tres veces se le
pregunta si lo ama. En ese acto precioso de reconciliación, se le
confía autoridad sobre la comunidad de Jesús, la iglesia.
Nos podría parecer que estos son sucesos que poco tienen que
ver con nuestra vida, pero para nosotros, como para los
discípulos en Jerusalén, o los discípulos a la orilla del lago, se
trata de reconocer la presencia amorosa y llena de autoridad del
Señor en nuestras vidas. Se nos aparece en actos tan sencillos
como lo puede ser el desayuno de los discípulos, en el ánimo
que recibimos para continuar nuestro trabajo, en los signos de
vida que vencen a la muerte a nuestro alrededor, en los actos de
reconciliación que nos ofrecen a diario, o que iniciamos. Y los
vemos en las decisiones que tomamos, y en cómo reflexionamos
a qué vamos a obedecer. Los vemos cuando escuchamos en los
más profundo de nuestra conciencia qué curso de acción
debemos tomar. Lo vemos cuando nos negamos a dejarnos
gobernar por las modas, por el afán de consumir, por el deseo
de poseer cosas materiales.
Para la reflexión
¿Quién merece mi confianza? ¿A quién le he concedido autoridad moral?
¿A quién obedezco con prontitud? ¿En qué momentos he podido negar a
Cristo con mis acciones? ¿Qué me dice hoy cuando se sienta a mi lado a
comer? ¿Cuál es su pregunta? ¿Cuántas veces me la hace?
