History of the School
The School Site
Ground was broken for the twin Archbishop Wood High Schools on June 20, 1963, by
the Right Reverend Monsignor Edward T. Hughes, M.A., Superintendent of Schools for the
Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The site of the two high schools was 32 acres of former farmland
located at the intersections of State Highway 263 (York Road) and State Highway 132 (Street
Road) in Warminster Township, Bucks County.
Archbishop James Frederick Wood
The schools were named for the fifth Bishop and first Archbishop of Philadelphia, the Most
Reverend James F. Wood, D.D. The Archbishop, born on April 27, 1813 in Philadelphia, was
a convert to the Faith. He was baptized in the First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia. Shortly
before his twenty-fifth birthday, he was received into the Catholic Church. A year later, he was
sent to Rome to prepare for the priesthood. After his ordination on March 25, 1844, he served
in the Diocese of Cincinnati.
In 1856, Reverend James F. Wood was sent to Philadelphia by the Holy See and was
appointed as Co-adjutor with the right to succession to Bishop John Neumann. For three years,
Bishop Wood worked closely with Bishop Neumann as the Philadelphia Catholic School System
began to take shape. He succeeded to the See on January 5, 1860 when Bishop Neumann, now
revered as St. John Neumann, died.
In 1875, the Holy See raised Philadelphia to the dignity of a Metropolitan See, naming
Bishop Wood as the first Archbishop. After serving the people of Philadelphia devotedly for
twenty-three years, Archbishop Wood died on June 20, 1883.
The People of Archbishop Wood High School
When the twin schools opened in 1964, the Founding Principals were the Reverend
Joseph A. Shields, J.C.D. (Girls School) and the Reverend Peter Kelkermanns, C.I.C.M. (Boys
School). The original faculty consisted of Diocesan Priests, members of the Congregation of
the Immaculate Heart of Mary (C.I.C.M.), a Belgian community of missionary priests; Sisters,
Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM), Sisters of St. Joseph (SSJ), Religious Sisters
of Mercy (RSM), and devoted lay teachers. Other religious orders who served the community
include the Vincentian Fathers (CM), the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales (OSFS), and the Religious
of the Assumption (RA).
In March 1990, the Archdiocese announced that the two separate schools would merge,
effective July 1, 1990, to be known as Archbishop Wood High School. The first principal of the
merged school was the Reverend John A. Close.
In 1994, a new model for administration was introduced at Archbishop Wood High School.
Ms. Catherine Murray was named Principal, and Reverend James Beisel was appointed President.
A state of the art baseball facility was constructed, and a multi-cast computer lab was completed.
In the spring of 1999, Reverend Joseph Kelley was appointed President. Over the next
several years, every classroom was equipped with computers and Internet access.
Dr. Frederick Ciao was named President in 2003. Dr. Ciao has focused on making numerous
improvements to the building and grounds with special focus on technology upgrades. The
school’s first ever capital campaign and development initiatives are addressing much needed
tuition assistance programs.
Mrs. Mary Harkins added her talents to the school’s administrative staff with her appointment
as Principal in June of 2005.
In January 2010, Mr. Gary V. Zimmaro was named the fourth President of Archbishop
Wood. Many additions and innovations have taken place including a Piano Lab and New Science
Lab.
Development of the School Plant
Many changes have been made to the school facilities over the years. In 1987 Cardinal John
Krol announced the construction of an auditorium with a seating capacity of 1,000. This new
building would physically link the two school buildings as the original plans for the school had
intended. Our beautiful auditorium, opened in 1989, stands as a lasting tribute to the generosity
of Mrs. Sophia A. Friedman and the Friedman Family.
Archbishop Wood Today
The second decade of the 21st century has seen changes in all aspects of Archbishop Wood:
the physical plant, academics, technology, the arts, activities and athletics.
New classroom doors have been installed throughout the building, four student lavatories
have had total renovations, and the Library has become The Learning Commons. The Learning
Commons is a relaxed and inviting space filled with technology where students work, study or
collaborate. The Learning Commons also has a coffee shop for the students.
Many new electives and Advanced Placement classes have been added to our academic
program. Each year over 125 junior and senior students take college courses either through the
Diocesan Scholars Program or Dual Enrollment classes with Bucks County Community
College. Wood101/Freshman Studies helps all 9th grade students become accustomed to high
school and helps to prepare them for college and beyond. New for 2104-15 will be Virtual
Learning Classes in Advanced Placement Calculus BC, AP Psychology and AP Micro and Macro
Economics. Reflecting the interests of our students beyond high school, Wood has added a
Medical Careers Academy and a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program.
Technology is a major part of education at Wood. All classrooms are equipped with
computers, smart boards and projectors. The entire building is wireless and students use their
own devices (BYOD) in class. New classes in technology have been added, including web design,
CAD and Virtual Business. Music is again part of the curriculum. Along with band classes,
students have the opportunity to study piano and strings. The talents of our music students
have been rewarded through membership in the All Catholic Music programs. Studio
art
students have been recognized with numerous awards and scholarships including two students
who in recent years won the Dad Vail poster contest, placing their artwork throughout the city of
Philadelphia.
New activities include Athletes Helping Athletes, THON based on the Penn State THON,
Viking Night, the Mr. Viking Pageant, and our nationally recognized Robotics Team.
Since joining PIAA (Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association) in 2008, Wood has
received 5 Gold Medals as State Champions and 7 Silver Medals as runners up. Our sports teams
continue to win many Catholic League and District XII Championships.
While many Catholic schools have experienced a declining enrollment, Wood has been
blessed with a stable student population. Recruitment and retention are important aspects of
our school. The use of television and radio advertising has become staples of Wood’s marketing
program.
Many things change; many things stay the same. Students currently attending Archbishop
Wood continue the Viking tradition of excellence in all aspects of our school’s life. Most
importantly each of our students is committed to being the best person he or she can be, taking
care of each other and those in the community who are less fortunate.
As Archbishop Wood High School begins its second 50 years, it is well-positioned for
continued growth and success in the future.

Sister Susan Walsh, RSM
Education/Arts/Entertainment
An influential and large part of the educational community, Sr.
Susan Walsh, RSM, has continued the Catholic values taught to her
at Archbishop Wood. Since her graduation in 1970, Sister has truly
shown excellence in the field of Education.
During her time at Wood, Sister Susan Walsh was involved in
multiple sports and clubs, and even received the Scholar Athlete award
for her successes. She went on to receive her B.A. in Mathematics
(Secondary Education) from Gwynedd Mercy College, her Masters
of Arts in the Teaching of Mathematics from Villanova University in
1988, and Education Administration Graduate Studies at Gwynedd
Mercy College from 1996-99. Sister has also received her Principal
Certification. Sr. Susan Walsh carried on the Catholic teachings she
learned at Wood by selflessly joining the Institute of the Sisters of
Mercy of the Americas, and has been a loyal and faithful nun for the
past 42 years. She was inspired to become a member of the religious
community because of the Sisters who were so actively involved in her
life at Wood. Not only has she passed on the Catholic values, but Sister
has passed on her love of learning. She started teaching at St. Malachy
School, which is her current parish, and has also taught mathematics,
science and theology in upper grades, elementary, and secondary school
at Gwynedd-Mercy Academy and Mercy Vocational High School. Sister
was also the Vice Principal at Mercy Vocational High School, and is
currently the Principal there.
Sister Susan Walsh’s work extends far beyond the required
curriculum. She has organized many service opportunities for her
students, while altruistically volunteering at her parish as a lector,
Eucharistic Minister, worship team member, member of the Education
Committee of the School, and member of the parish council. Sister
has also been a member of the Board of Trustees at Gwynedd Mercy
Academy High School for the last 18 years. She was also the head
volleyball coach at Wood for the first three years after she graduated,
and was also a substitute teacher for the German language classes for
three months during the 1970-71 school year, the first year after her
graduation. In spite of all her work, Sister manages to find time to be an
avid Phillies fan and loves to go to Spring Training and regular season
games.
For exhibiting qualities of educational excellence for 42 years, we
are proud to welcome Sr. Susan Walsh, RSM into the Archbishop Wood
Hall of Fame.
Mr. Christopher Meister
Athletics
A member of the Class of 1998, Chris Meister has continually
exhibited excellence, especially in the field of Athletics. Chris calls his
decision to attend Archbishop Wood the best decision of his childhood,
and so for his constant dedication to Wood, he is being inducted into
the Hall of Fame.
During his four years at Wood, Chris was a three-year wrestling
team captain, accumulated 118 career high school wins, won the
Philadelphia Catholic League Championship three times, and was
a two-time High School National Prep All-American, including his
National Prep School Championship win in 1998. He went on to
wrestle varsity at Lock Haven University, until transferring to Delaware
Valley College his senior year, where he placed second at the Division
III MAC Conference Championships and missed qualifying for the
National Tournament by one match. Coach Meister graduated from
Delaware Valley College with a degree in Business Administration Finance. He also received his Master’s degree in Real Estate Finance
& Investments from Johns Hopkins University in 2010. He worked
in the private sector as a real estate professional, financing, trading
and owning real estate investments. After talks of dropping wrestling
from the school’s athletic program in 2011, Coach Meister took over
the position of Wrestling Coach at Archbishop Wood. In 2013, he left
the corporate world to focus full-time on coaching, and CrossFit and
Olympic weightlifting. He implemented his knowledge of CrossFit and
Olympic Weightlifting as part of the team’s strength and conditioning
program. Chris’s efforts resulted in the wrestling program doubling its
numbers his second year.
Aside from his business achievements, Coach Meister holds a
certification as a Level-1 CrossFit trainer, USA Weightlifting-L1 SP,
and CrossFit Olympic Lift Certification. He has been privately training
athletes since 2009 and actively participating in CrossFit training
for approximately 6-years. Coach Meister has been married to his
wife Jenny Lynn for 11 years and the couple has three children. In
addition to being a committed family man, he enjoys coaching the
Viking Wrestling team, managing real estate investments and privately
training athletes, and competing in wrestling and fitness competitions.
For exhibiting qualities of athletic greatness, we are proud to
welcome Chris Meister into the Archbishop Wood Hall of Fame.
Sister Mary Pat Garvin, RSM
Religious
Sister Mary Pat Garvin, of the Class of 1973, discovered her
love for teaching during her time at Archbishop Wood by tutoring
for the Community Service Corps at Saint John Bosco School. Upon
graduating from Wood, she attended Gwynedd Mercy College, where
she received a degree in History, and Pontifical Gregorian University
in Rome, Italy, where she received her bachelors, masters, and Ph.D.
in Psychology. Sr. Mary Pat has since spent the past 35 years teaching
elementary, secondary, and higher education in Pennsylvania, Florida,
and Rome, as well as running seminars all over the world in countries
such as Ethiopia, Ireland, and the Philippines. In addition to teaching,
Sister Mary Pat Garvin has published various chapters and articles on
Religious Life and the integration of theology and psychology in both
international and national publications.
Sister found what she wanted to do for the rest of her life here at
Wood and believes that she received an education that allowed her
to grow spiritually and academically. Her favorite Wood memories
include school plays and winning the Volleyball City Championship in
1970.
Sister Mary Pat Garvin presently lives near Washington D.C.,
serving on the general leadership team of the Sisters of Mercy of
the Americas and on the Board of Cranaleith Spiritual Center in
Philadelphia, PA. She definitely looks back on her years at Wood with
deep gratitude and appreciation. Archbishop Wood congratulates
Sister Mary Pat for her many accomplishments over the years!
The Honorable Mark A. Kearney
Business/Military
The Honorable Mark Kearney’s efforts in the Archbishop Wood and
entire Southeastern Pennsylvanian community have resulted in over
twenty national, state and local awards, capped by his beloved Wood’s
selection of him as a member of its Hall of Fame. Since his graduation
from Wood in 1980, Judge Kearney went on to be the first college
graduate in his family, earning his B.A. in Economics and English with
honors, and then his J.D. from Villanova University in 1987. Following
law school, he served as a judicial clerk for the Court of Chancery of the
State of Delaware.
Following his clerkship, Judge Kearney joined Elliott Greenleaf &
Siedzikowski, where he practiced law for over 27 years, and became
a managing and hiring shareholder. A member of the Delaware and
Pennsylvania Bars, Mark Kearney work’s concentrated in litigation
with special emphasis on the representation of business owners,
investors, directors and officers. He was repeatedly elected (20112015) in a statewide poll of lawyers and judges as a Top 100 lawyer in
Pennsylvania and Philadelphia. Benchmark Litigation selected him as
one of only 50 “Litigation Stars” in Pennsylvania for 2013 and 2014.
In addition, the Montgomery County Bar Association honored Judge
Kearney as the 2014 Trial Lawyer of the Year. In December 2014,
President Barack Obama commissioned Mark A. Kearney as the onehundredth district court judge in the nation’s first federal trial court.
With this election, Judge Kearney became the first person elevated
from the practice of law in Montgomery County directly to a federal
trial or appellate court. Along with his incredible judicial career, the
honorable Mark Kearney has been a large part of many organizations.
Judge Kearney serves as the President of the Pennsylvania Bar Institute,
and founder and chairperson of the Welcoming Center for New
Pennsylvanians. He presently serves on Villanova Law School’s most
distinguished Board of Consultors, and served as the 2009 President
of the Montgomery Bar Association and 2010-11 Chairman of the
Montgomery Bar Foundation. He coached back-to-back little league
baseball champions and started a thriving charity baseball tournament.
Judge Kearney also has represented dozens of abused boys and girls
in trials through the Montgomery Child Advocacy Project, and was a
longtime director of Legal Aid of Southeastern Pennsylvania.
For exhibiting qualities of judicial greatness for over thirty years,
we are proud to welcome Mark A. Kearney into the Archbishop Wood
Hall of Fame.
Mr. Edward McCormick
Service to Archbishop Wood and the Wood Community
For Mr. Ed McCormick, Archbishop Wood will always be a
home. From high school until now, he has always been a Viking
and has so many great memories from going to school and coaching
here. Mr. McCormick graduated from Kutztown University in 1985
and has since had a long and fulfilling career of 23 years as a sales
representative with Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, where he has received
numerous sales awards. As a 25 year coach here at Archbishop Wood,
Mr. McCormick has never lost touch with his Viking roots either.
Family and work take up a great amount of Mr. McCormick’s time,
but he still finds the time to give back to the community by coaching
with many local youth organizations such as Warrington Warrior
Football, Warrington/Warwick Basketball, and Nativity of Our Lord
CYO.
Mr. McCormick currently lives in Jamison, PA with his wife Karen
and children Kasey, Jake, and Kiki. He will always be a special part of
the Wood community. Archbishop Wood is honored to present him
with this award for all the service he has given!
Magisterial District Judge Daniel J. Finello Jr.
The Viking Award
Magisterial District Judge Daniel J. Finello Jr. has always played a
big role in the Archbishop Wood community. After graduating from
Wood in 1968 he went on to study Political Science at Lasalle, and has
been a very busy man ever since.
Mr. Finello has been the Magisterial District Judge of Warminster
Township and the Ivyland Borough since 2003, the District Judge
Association of Bucks County Treasurer since 2007, and President of
the District XII SCJAP (Bucks and Montgomery County Judges) since
2013. Mr. Finello plays a role in the community as well. He is an
active member of the Warminster Rotary Club and is one of only six
Pennsylvanians selected to be a delegate on the Democratic National
Platform. Mr. Finello has also been involved in Archbishop Wood Girls’
Soccer as the assistant to Mr. Bill Cappo since 2000. One cannot go
without saying that Mr. Cappo and Mr. Finello have had huge success
in girls’ soccer, coaching the team to six Philadelphia Catholic League
Championship games since 2008 including three titles, in 2009,
2010, and 2011.
Mr. Finello will forever be a busy man, but he always finds time for
family. His two granddaughters Katie (age 3) and Nora (age 1) always
spend time with him and his wife Nora. His family enjoys vacationing
at the Jersey Shore and Disney World.
Mr. Finello has always loved Archbishop Wood and everything
about it. The Wood community is extremely happy to honor his
service both in and out of Wood by presenting him with the Viking
Award!
