Welcome to Gold Canyon
Our story begins as a dream in a little Arizona kitchen. Co-Founder Karen
Waisath wanted a candle that smelled as good and strong at home, as it did in
the store. She believed every ounce of wax you paid for should burn evenly and
be enjoyed — not stick to the side of the candle jar. Karen was determined to
create this perfect candle and set out to do so. The very first candle Karen
created, pictured at left, was Fresh Orange, which is still available today.

Her dream quickly turned into a journey to create “The World’s Finest” . Along
the way, we’ve conducted worldwide research to find the very best fragrances,
wicks, wax and additives. There are simply no fragrances stronger than ours.
Our certified fragrance experts design our candles to burn longer and maintain a consistent fragrance
from the first moment to the last. We believe in quality, so rest assured that we will never be sneaky with
our scents! Unlike other candles, the wax at the top of ours is just as fragrant as the last ounce. With that
said, we are 100% confident that we create the finest fragranced products. We even guarantee that our
products are the strongest you will find anywhere! With the help of our expert Coworkers and dedicated

All about Wax and Wicks
There’s more to wax and wicks than meets the eye. It’s the perfect
combination of the right wick with the right wax that gives our
candles their signature fragrance throw and consistently even
burn. Whether it’s zinc core or cotton, all our wicks are made in the
USA and feature a “safety collar”; that’s just a fancy way to say
that when your candle burns down to that last quarter of an inch, the wick will self-extinguish to prevent broken
glass and spilt wax. If you would like to know more about the kinds of wicks we use, see the Technical Appendix
on page 151.

Now that we’ve talked about wicks, let’s talk about wax. Gold Canyon uses different waxes based on the needs
of our different candle lines. All our waxes burn cleanly which means they have virtually no effect on your air
quality and do little harm – if any – to the environment. We use both food-grade paraffin wax as well as natural
vegetable wax. You may have heard that soy wax candles can go rancid, but you’ll never have that problem with
Gold Canyon candles. Our Soy wax candles are always a blend of waxes, ensuring they will last and last! The
Anatomy of a Candle section will list the wax that is used in each candle product. Here are the kinds of waxes
you will see:
Food-Grade Paraffin Wax
Used in the majority of Gold Canyon’s candle products, paraffin comes from companies that manufacture foodgrade paraffin as a primary product and from refineries as a byproduct. Our paraffin wax does not contain
genetically modified (GM or GMO) material.
Plant-Based Soy Wax Blend
Plant-based soy wax blend is made from renewable resources, is specifically formulated for high fragranced
candles and has a creamy opaque finish. Our plant-based soy wax does not contain genetically modified (GM or
GMO) material. May contain highly refined, bleached, deodorized (RBD) soy based oils, which are protein free
and thus allergen free!
Once we’ve chosen the kind of wick and wax, it’s time to mix up the magic! What makes an ordinary homecooked meal taste extraordinary? Seasonings. Wax additives could be described as the seasonings in a
candle recipe. There are hundreds of different additives available to use, each affecting the outcome and
the degree of the fragrance. Check out the Fragrance Training section to see the different groups of
additives we use to cook up your favorite fragrances!

Candles: What You Need to Know
Our high quality wax blend and double wicks ensure our candles provide a consistent, quality fragrance
and long burning time, but so does proper candle care. Proper candle care can extend the life of a candle
and save money. Independent lab results show that with proper candle care, an 8 oz. candle burns up to
five hour longer and produces 90% less soot.
Prior to Lighting
• Never pick up candles by the lid. The best way to pick up a candle is to place one hand around the
neck of the jar, while the other hand supports the bottom of the jar.
• Read the instructions on the bottom label of the candles. The instructions are placed there as a
precaution for burning candles.
• When applicable, remove decorative accents prior to lighting.
• Trim wicks to 1/4 inch prior to lighting, but do not drop trimmings into the candle. Long wicks may
create too much heat on the glass, potentially causing it to shatter.
When Burning
• Use holders to protect the surfaces of tabletops and shelves underneath the candle.
• To prevent fire, burn the candle within sight, out of the reach of children and pets and away from
drafts and anything that may catch fire.
• Burn long enough to liquefy the entire top layer of wax, not to exceed four hours. If you want to burn a
candle longer, extinguish the candle, trim the wick down to 1/4 inch and relight.
• Handle candle carefully during use and immediately after extinguishing. The glass will be hot.

• Discontinue burning when 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom of the jar. Gold Canyon has
factored this 1/2 inch of wax into our burn time calculations and candle volume measurements.
• Use a wick dipper to extinguish flames to prevent residual smoke and splattered wax. The coating of
wax also makes the wick easier to relight.
Cleaning Your Candle
• If the waxy part of your candle has gotten dirty, wipe it down with a slightly damp cloth.
• Black soot on the jars can be caused by any number of reasons, including untrimmed wicks and
burning a candle in a draft, or near, or below a fan. Soot can be removed with glass cleaner and
paper towels.
Candle Storage
• Store your candles in a temperature-controlled environment (65°-80°F). Candles begin to melt at
approximately 150°F. If candles get too cold, at approximately 65°F, the wax may shrink and pull
away from the glass. This only affects the appearance, not the quality of the burn or the fragrance.
• Do not expose candles to direct sunlight or fluorescent light; it will discolor the candles over time.

Did you know that fragrances are created by combining natural and/or synthetic
ingredients? Gold Canyon uses only the highest quality blend of both kinds of these
oils in creating the finest fragrances. Several fragrance families are used to create
our signature scents. These in combination with specific fragrance notes (which we’ll talk about shortly)
are foundational to great fragrance. The information below will help you become more familiar with some
of the common fragrance families.
Citrus: These notes can be tart or tangy and consist of citrus fruits like
grapefruits, lemons, limes and oranges.
Herbs & Greens: These notes can smell fresh and natural and are
made up of greens like foliage and grasses and herbs like mint and
eucalyptus.
Fruity: These notes can be sweet and juicy and consist of fruits like
apples, berries and melons.
Floral: These notes can be delicate and sweet and are made up of
flowers like jasmine, lilac and rose.

Gourmand: These notes are rich and creamy. They consist of
edibles like vanilla and caramel.
Musk: These notes are powdery with hints of sweet and are used
in most fragrances as a preservative.
Ozonic: These notes are very outdoorsy and fresh and are made up
of natural items like marine and air.
Spice: These notes are bold and rich and consist of spices
like cinnamon and clove.
Woody: These notes are natural and earthy and are made
of trees like cedar wood and balsam.

Did you realize that every fragrance has layers? Each fragrance is made up of three layers of notes. The
first notes you smell when you take a whiff of one of our candles is the top layer. This is usually a lighter
note like citrus or ozone. The middle layer is the heart and soul of the fragrance. It helps define the character
and is often floral or fruity. The bottom notes are the long lasting notes that linger in the air. These notes are
heavier and can be made up of musks or woody notes. See the Fragrance Pyramid diagram below for a
visual reference.

Test on an inconspicuous area to check for color
fastness.
Use a spoon to scrape away excess wax.
Apply wax remover liberally over the soiled area
and allow to soak at least five minutes.
Rubbing the spot with a fresh soft cloth
moistened with wax remover.
Wipe clean and dry with a fresh, soft cloth.
Wax Remover will maintain a shelf life of one
year when stored in a temperature-controlled
environment (65°-80°F).

Wick Dipper
Why use a wick dipper to extinguish the flame? You
eliminate any residual smoke (a.k.a. the smoky puff
that blows in your face). The coat of wax on the wick
also helps preserve it between uses.

the hook end to lower the lit wick into the
liquefied wax.
Use the hook again to lift the wick out of the wax

Wick Trimmer
When you keep your wicks trimmed to 1/4",
independent lab results show that this can add five
hours to the life of a small candle! This trick also
stops soot build-up from masking the candle’s

Place the bottom of the foot against the cooled
wax.
Nestle the wick into the notch in the side of the
foot.
Close the handles to cut.
Properly discard the wick trimming that collect in
the debris tray.
