Bayshore expands health care navigation services with CAREpath
Bayshore HealthCare recently acquired CAREpath™, an organization that specializes in providing cancer
assistance support to individuals in need.
The CAREpath team includes highly
experienced Canadian cancer specialists
(support staff, oncology nurses and
oncologists) who follow the most up-todate guidelines for cancer treatment
and care. They work together to
ensure clients receive the clear advice,
information and support they need to
navigate the increasingly complex public
health care system. The only program
of its kind in the world, CAREpath
has built a strong customer base with
particular focus on employers who offer
cancer assistance as part of an employee
benefits program.
CAREpath is based in Toronto but
provides services across Canada. Its
work is well aligned with Bayshore’s
existing offerings in health care
navigation, including the Seniors Care
Assistance Program®, which helps families
understand their senior care options.

Part of CAREpath’s team include oncology nurse managers, oncologists and clinical coordinators
for the acquisition. “The program’s cancer
specialists are leaders in their field, and
they work with clients to make sure they
receive proper treatment in the right
facilities in a timely manner.”
Bringing CAREpath on board will
help Bayshore expand its health care
navigation services across the country.
Bayshore’s strong nursing culture and
in-depth understanding of community
health care programs and services
makes it an ideal organization to support
employers, their employees and family
members when a health crisis strikes.
CAREpath will operate as a separate
business. The physician creators of the
CAREpath Navigation Program, Dr.
Denny DePetrillo and Dr. Bill Hryniuk,
will continue in their roles on the
organization’s Medical Advisory Board
for the program. Anita McGowan,
Director of Nursing, will also continue
in her role, ensuring the highest level of
client service.

As I see it...
Living our values every day
As you’ll see in this issue of Bayshore Bridges, we
recently relaunched our Mission, Vision and Values.
A lot of thought and effort went into that project, and
it yielded not only new guidelines for our staff to put
into practice, but also a deeper understanding of how
people view Bayshore itself: passionate and caring.
We witness this daily as our staff – everyone from
our Client Experience Centre representatives to the
field staff who visit people in their homes – strive to
make a difference with each encounter.
We’re also proud that several of our caregivers have
received recognition for going above and beyond
(turn to page 5 to read some of their inspiring stories).
Passion and caring drive their work. After all, there’s
no greater joy than making a difference in someone’s
life.

Platinum Club designation
Bayshore has earned its third consecutive
Platinum Club member designation
with Canada’s Best Managed Companies
program, awarded to organizations that

Bayshore HealthCare celebrates Best Practice
Spotlight Organization designation
Bayshore HealthCare has achieved the
designation of Best Practice Spotlight
Organization (BPSO), presented by
the Registered Nurses’ Association of
Ontario (RNAO). To earn this recognition,
Bayshore met rigorous requirements
over the past three years, including
implementation of RNAO best practice
guidelines, led by Anna Cooper, Clinical
Practice Leader/BPSO® Lead, and Joanne
Vezina, Quality & Risk Program Manager
and Privacy Officer.
“The BPSO initiatives align with
Bayshore’s core values and guidelines of
offering the highest standards of quality
service and care to our thousands of
clients,” says Holly Quinn, Chief Nursing
Officer.
Many Bayshore nurses shared their
thoughts on the achievement. Here is
just one example: “It makes me proud to
work for Bayshore! I feel like I belong to a
strong organization that looks to develop
best practice within their employees, thus
providing best practice to their clients.”

April event, followed by a company-wide
celebration during Nursing Week in May.

living advisors join
the Bayshore family
Senior housing
options can seem
overwhelming.
Independent
seniors looking for a
retirement
community have
very different needs
than people who

need nursing care,
for example. There are also the questions
of location and cost. With so many factors
to consider, seniors could use a guide to
navigate the process.
eOccupancy Senior Living, recently
acquired by Bayshore HealthCare,
offers exactly that. “Our personalized
service connects seniors and families
with private-sector options, primarily
in Ontario,” explains George Fermanis,
Director of Business Development. “Free
of charge, our advisors help coordinate
based on individual needs – location,
budget, desired amenities – to find
something suitable.”
Options include independent living,
retirement homes with meals, assisted
living, and secured accommodations
for residents with Alzheimer’s disease
or dementia. Advisors can also offer
assistance with finding long-term care.
“When I started eOccupancy in 2012,
there wasn’t any help in the private sector
to find senior housing and help families
understand,” says Fermanis. “There’s
confusion around public versus private
options, and often clients are in crisis.
We listen to what they’re looking for and
educate them about what’s out there.
They may be looking at a mix – a private
option with subsidized support.”

renews key contracts
Bayshore Therapy & Rehab’s Seniors
Wellness Program has successfully
renewed its contract with Diversicare for
two years. Bayshore health professionals
will continue providing physiotherapy and
other therapies at long-term care homes in
Brantford and Tilbury, Ont.
The division has also renewed its
contract to provide physiotherapy and
exercise classes five days a week, plus
wellness inservices for residents and staff,
at long-term care facilities in Wiarton and
Walkerton, in Ontario’s Bruce County.

expands attendant care for
MVA survivors
“A Bayshore Therapy & Rehab pilot project
to expand attendant care for survivors
of motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) has
received excellent feedback from branches,
clients and referral sources since its
September launch,” says Marie Graham,
Divisional Director. “It’s progressing well
at the seven participating branches. We’ll
continue rolling this out across Ontario and
use what we’re learning in other provinces.”
“For simplicity, referral sources and
clients only need to call one toll-free
number,” says Katie Schinkel, Director of
Therapy & Rehabilitation, who oversees
Bayshore’s MVA services in Ontario. The
program’s streamlined process means that
clients who receive both attendant care
and physiotherapy won’t answer duplicate
questions or have unnecessary assessments.

New program in Niagara
focuses on chronic pain
Chronic pain caused by disease or injury
can have a devastating physical and
emotional toll. With strategies to manage
pain, however, sufferers’ quality of life may
improve.
Last fall, Bayshore
Therapy & Rehab
launched a six-week
outpatient program in
Ontario’s Niagara
region for people with
chronic pain. “It went
extremely well,” says
Katie Schinkel,

Rehabilitation. “People felt they benefited
from working with the facilitators, and
particularly from the group dynamic –
learning strategies from others with chronic
pain.”
The program also focused on making use
of community resources. As a result, says
Schinkel, “People had tools and strategies
they could apply to everyday life, making
the transition easier.”

Bayshore funds French
translation of oncology
nursing exam
To better support French-speaking nurses
at Bayshore and across Canada, the
company provided funding to translate
the final exam of the de Souza Institute’s
Provincial Standardized Chemotherapy and
Biotherapy course. The institute, created by
the Ontario government in partnership with
Cancer Care Ontario and University Health
Network, provides support to nurses who
care for cancer patients.

Palliative Care,
approached Bayshore
with a proposal to
translate the exam.
An internal team of

French-speaking
nurses helped with the translation, and
Bayshore worked with the institute to
finalize the exam.
“I facilitate the course for Bayshore. It’s
required to work in our infusion clinics,
so I wanted to ensure French-speaking
nurses have the opportunity to take the
exam in French,” says Marvell. “It was a
great partnership, and we look forward to
working with de Souza further on initiatives
that support our French-speaking nurses.”

Bayshore wins contract for
New Brunswick patient sitter
program
Bayshore has won a three-year contract
to provide patient sitters at three Horizon
Health facilities in New Brunswick. The
Fredericton branch has hired 80 staff for the
contract.
Patient sitters enhance safety, explains
Martine Estey, Area Director for Fredericton
and Woodstock. “Hospital employees aren’t
always in the room. Often, patients we’re
sitting for have dementia and might wander.
Patient sitters are advocates but also enable
hospital employees to do their jobs while
ensuring patient safety.
“This contract is a great opportunity, and
it brings Bayshore forward as a huge partner
in the health care system.”

Bayshore expands branches in
B.C. and Alberta
Bayshore HealthCare
has opened two
satellite branches on
Vancouver Island. The
first is at the Longlake
Chateau in Nanaimo,
in partnership with
Atria Retirement
Concepts, a leading
Stasia Hartley
provider of
independent living communities. The
second is in Sidney, where Bayshore has
acquired a small home care agency.
“We’re thrilled to expand our presence
in beautiful B.C.,” says Stasia Hartley, Area
Director, Vancouver Island. “We can offer
additional care to clients while providing
staff with convenient locations for supply
pick-ups and in-service programs.”

Regina branch supports young
roommates with autism
Bayshore’s branch in Regina, Sask., is
working with the local health region to
help two young men with autism live
independently. This spring, personal care
workers, a community support worker and
a nurse began assisting the roommates
with tasks such as meal planning and
activity scheduling.
“The goal is for these young men to
become more independent – we support
them with cues and help them learn how
to make plans,” says Sharron Bryce, Area
Director. “It’s a groundbreaking project,
and their families are thrilled with their
care.”

Ottawa Private branch wins
city contract
Bayshore’s Ottawa Private Services
branch has re-won a contract to provide
housekeeping services to the City of
Ottawa for clients receiving social
services. Bayshore has held the contract
since 2005. “The branch’s home support
workers receive some training on mental
health in preparation for working with
clients who have dementia or mental
illness,” adds Joanne Dix, Area Director.

Celebrating Bayshore’s culture of excellence
Bayshore HealthCare is thrilled to share news of staff members who have been recognized for going
above and beyond.
Wendy Miller recognized as
Caregiver of the Year – twice!

caregivers, it’s not a
job – it’s a calling,”

worker whom the
BC Care Providers Association recently
honoured with its 2015 Caregiver of the
Year Award.
Hartley nominated Miller, writing to the
awards committee: “Wendy is compassionate and caring with all clients and is often
requested by families for her competent
and loving way of dealing with seniors,
especially those with dementia.She is able
to calm even the most agitated client.”
This is the second honour for Miller in
recent months. In October, the Victoria
branch named her 2014 Caregiver of the
Year. “Wendy truly embodies the meaning
of caregiving,” says Hartley. “She’s so
dedicated to ensuring seniors and injured
people are treated with respect and
dignity.”

National Family Caregivers
Day highlights home care
employers
This spring, the Canadian Caregiver
Coalition launched a campaign to
celebrate National Family Caregivers
Day, with the theme “Care & Work: A
Balancing Act.” It highlighted home
care employers, including Bayshore, that
provide supportive work environments for
employees who are family caregivers.
The campaign includes a series of
photos with personal stories, to reinforce
the faces and voices of caregiverfriendly employers and their employees
who are family caregivers, including
Stuart Cottrelle, President of Bayshore
HealthCare and Janet Daglish, Director
of Community Partnerships They were
included in the photo exhibition, which
was displayed at Parliament Hill on May
12. The Coalition also plans to produce a
coffee-table book.

JoAnn Leavey honoured with a
Governor General’s Award
In April, Dr. JoAnn
Leavey, an
occupational nurse
at Bayshore’s
London branch and
a psychologist in
private practice,
received a Governor
General’s Award
Dr. JoAnn Leavey
from Gov. Gen.
David Johnston, honouring her many
years of volunteerism in Canada and
abroad.
Leavey is dedicated to working with
people in different cultures and underresourced regions. Her work has taken
her to northern Ontario, Bangladesh,
New Orleans and Haiti, where she travels
annually with a medical team to teach
public health and provide treatment (last
year, Bayshore donated $500 towards
medical supplies). Leavey also recently
published a book about youth and mental
health, and she is working towards her
nurse practitioner degree at Western
University.

Triple honours for Windsor
personal support workers
The Ontario Personal Support Worker
Association has honoured three
employees at Bayshore’s Windsor, Ont.,
branch. Meera Mazloum and Kristyne
Irwin received the organization’s Award
of Excellence, and Abdullah Hussein
received the Recognition Award.
“These PSWs work very hard and go
above and beyond for their clients. I’ve
heard nothing but glowing comments
about them,” says Melissa Murdoch, Area
Director. “They’re passionate and caring
about their jobs and continue to make
Bayshore proud out in the community.”

Anti-slip footwear protects field staff from falls
“Seventeen percent
of work-related
accidents are slips,
trips and falls,” says
Andy Anderson,
Bayshore
HealthCare’s
National Health
and Safety

Manager. “That’s an
Ontario statistic, but it’s similar across
Canada. These accidents are expensive to
treat, and lots of falls result in deaths.”
Those grim realities prompted
Anderson to purchase anti-slip footwear
for field staff to use when visiting clients
in cold, icy weather. He was inspired
by Bayshore’s Hamilton branch, which
offered employees footwear free of charge.
Anderson ordered 1,700 pairs of slip-on
cleats from Mark’s Work Wearhouse to
get other branches started (staff can ask
their Area Directors). He also arranged a
10% discount for employees to buy antislip footwear for hazardous spaces like
kitchens and bathrooms.
Anderson’s team also created a training
program about safe walking, with
information from the Ministry of Labour,
to spread the message. As Anderson says,
“We’re at work: fashion doesn’t count,
function does.”

Appointments
In September,
Brian Good
became Director
of Business
Development for
Bayshore Specialty
Rx. He is well connected within the
industry and brings more than 30 years
of experience to his role. His main
responsibility is driving new business
with pharmaceutical manufacturers.
Phil Grant has
been promoted to
Area Director for
Quebec. He joined
Bayshore in 2012
as Manager,
Northern Nursing
Program, bringing
his strong management background and
knowledge of Quebec’s northern nursing
market. He also has more than 20 years’
nursing experience from hospital, rural
nursing stations and community sectors
across Quebec.
In March, Tina
Learmonth
became the new
Area Director for
Bayshore’s Saint
John, N.B., branch.
She has been at
Bayshore for more
than 10 years, and she worked closely
with Brian Kierstead, who recently
retired from the role. Tina is also a member of the Board of Directors for the New
Brunswick Home Support Association.
Melissa Murdoch
became Area
Director in
Windsor this past
fall, after working
with Bayshore’s
Sudbury team for
the previous year
and a half. Melissa brings with her great
experience and training, including operational experience with Epsilon.
Sharron Bryce is
Area Director for
Bayshore’s Regina
branch. Sharron is
an RN with a strong
entrepreneurial
background in the
continuing care
sector. She has been with Bayshore since
2009, as Manager of Clinical Practice with
the Regina branch. She has demonstrated
strong leadership and connections in her
community, having served four terms as a
city councillor.
In March, Kathy
Brown, Director of
Operations,
Hamilton, became
Area Director,
Brantford, when a
separate office was
launched for that
city. Kathy joined Bayshore in 2013, bringing with her nursing and leadership skills,
as well as years of experience from a variety of roles within the HNHB – CCAC.
Her leadership was instrumental in the
implementation of the Epsilon platform at
the Hamilton and Brantford offices.
