Notes From Campus XXXII
The final week of May is upon us, and we have had a spectacular
weekend to usher in the last few days before the seniors depart for
the Senior Project. There is a lot to report, and the days ahead are
packed, so here goes…

GMVS Goes To Washington
The students in Alice’s Civics class got a taste of national politics
this past week, as they conducted a video conference with
Vermont’s senior Senator, Patrick Leahy. It was a freewheeling
discussion, and Alice provides some details below:
Students formulated 2 categories of questions for
Senator Leahy. The first category focused on the
crisis facing dairy farmers in Vermont (questions
were formulated based on preliminary research). The
second category of questions were open ended “ad
hoc” questions…these ranged from “Why did you
become a Senator” to: “Are you a fan of Batman,
Robin, or the Joker?” (in response to Leahy having a
cameo scene in “The Dark Knight”). This seemed to
be the question that the Senator most enjoyed…he
responded at length describing the sets and his
interaction with (the late actor) Heath Ledger, whom
he described as a “really down-to-Earth guy”.
When asked what recreational activities he enjoyed
most in Vermont, the Senator responded: “crosscountry skiing and snowshoeing”. This, of course,
was warmly received by Nordic skier Devlin Shea
‘13, who then invited Senator Leahy to join GMVS
Nordic skiers for a training session…anytime,
anyplace.
The panel of students who asked questions on behalf
of the class were Reeta Shrestha, Kate Rankin,
Tristan Palola, Jack Schibli, and Devlin Shea.
Finally, here is a nice comment from Senator
Leahy’s administrative assistant, noting the
Senator’s impression of our students:
“Thanks so much for all your work to make the chat happen.
The Senator really enjoyed speaking with the students and
commented on how engaged and bright they were. As you
could tell by his earlier arrival he was really looking forward
to speaking with the students. I hope they enjoyed
themselves as well…”

Lacrosse Notes
The lax teams head into the final week of the regular season on a
mixed note. The boys continued their winning ways, registering
another pair of wins to run their record to an impressive 7-3. On
Monday they secured the “Academy Cup” by dominating the
visitors from Stratton Mountain School (coached by Dylan Snell
GMVS ‘93) and taking the 12-5 win. Sandy Vietze ’11 and Hans
Halvorsen ’12 each registered a hat trick, while the trio of Cooper
McNealus ’10, Sam Worley ’13, and Mitch Grimmer ’12 scored
a pair of goals apiece. Jon Gonin ’11 continued his good
emergency work in goal, registering 12 saves.

mph for a few days…

On Wednesday, the boys headed west to a new opponent in
lacrosse, Vergennes Union. The team jumped out to a big lead,
entering the 4th period ahead 9-2 lead. The Commodores found
their range, though, and outscored the visitors 7-1 in the final
frame, which fortunately left GMVS with a tougher-than-expected
10-9 win. Goals came in pairs for Tomek Dobrzanski ‘11, Hans
Halvorsen and Sam Worley, while Cooper McNealus and Sandy
Vietze each scored as well. Jon Gonin withstood the furious
Vergennes rally to stop 12 shots for the win.
The girls opened the week at Sharon Academy on Monday, and
came away with a solid 14-11 win. The scoring punch was
provided by hat tricks courtesy of Haleigh Carbone ’11,
Katherine Scalia ‘10, and Kelly Glander ’13. Scoring two goals
was senior Emma LeBlanc, while Susan Campbell 12, Sam
Davis ’11, and Olivia Frank ’13 scored once apiece. Maddie
Leopold ’12 proved her versatility, taking a turn in goal and
making 18 saves.
Thursday’s home game with the Burr and Burton Bulldogs did not
go so well, as the defending state champs proved they have lost
none of their punch in registering a 19-4 win. Katherine Scalia
did her best to keep things close with 2 goals, while Haleigh
Carbone and Maddie Leopold added goals of their own. Ainsley
Carbone ’10 faced the onslaught in goal, making 13 saves.
The girls have 3 games this week, all against opponents that match
up well with us, so they hope to ‘win out’ and secure a spot in the
middle of the playoff pack.
The teams finish off the regular season next week, and then await
the pairings for the playoffs. Next week’s schedule:

Audrey and I want to pass on some great news. I just returned from
the annual Vermont Girls' Lacrosse Coaches' meeting and we are
happy to report that the following players were chosen as
VERMONT STATE ALL-STARS for the 2010 Season:

Second Team All-State:
Mid-field: Ainsley Carbone (yes, I have that right...as a field
player)

The Sound of Music
In case you are in town this Friday, be sure to swing by the Parker
Center at 7:30 for an evening of musical magic by GMVS students.
With the help of cellist Doug Lewis ’82, a group of undergrads
will perform on a variety of instruments. Join Alec McGovern ’10,
Gabe Rosen ’14 and Danie LeBlanc ’12 as they perform for the
community. And, if you want to perform as well, contact Dani to
get on the program.
Training Days
The boys’ training this spring has featured a wide variety of
activities. From the J3 boys’ game of paintball (Adam was going to
send pictures of the welts his charges imparted on him…), to the
creative measures below, the coaches have kept the guys busy.
Roped together, the guys had to make repeated laps up the Practice Slope at Mad River
Glen. Each trip featured a different item (nice and heavy) to transport as a team. Here

And, in case you miss training without a proper excuse, you get to see what 6 am looks
like at the Mad Path. Luckily these guys are not facing the camera so they cannot be
identified as they head out on their 4-mile jog…
The payoff after a hard workout on a hot day…this will be a popular spot in the next
couple of days…
Juniors Take To Maine
The junior class spent the weekend at the annual Junior Leadership
Seminar in Ogunquit, Maine, where they not only did some great
work toward making GMVS a better place, but also spent some
time on the beach under bright sunshine. A sample:
No, Ghassan Gedeon-Achi and Malcolm Pinnell are not tackling Katie Fitzpatrick. They are
being dragged as they take part in the ‘Lost’ group game, in which the players have to work
together to overcome individual physical limitations to get back to ‘safety’ after a plane crash. I
think Katie got the short end of the stick…
THIS guy knows a good role when he can find it: Mike Grund getting transported by his
sightless but very strong comrades, Sara Kikut and Hannah Kadah.

OK, the card did say Ryley (Walker) could not use his legs, so this is one technique that
seems to work!
