Pinewood Fire Department Memorial Garden
Munds Park Community Church
Dedication was celebrated on Saturday, May 23, 2015.
Sunday Services
This past Memorial Day weekend, residents of Munds Park and members of Pinewood Fire District
came together to formally dedicate the Pinewood Fire District’s 40th Anniversary Memorial Garden.
Come Worship with Us!
The garden is dedicated to those individuals who worked together to form and run the Fire District
more than 40 years ago. Chief John Welsch spoke of the spirit of volunteerism that prevailed for years
to ensure that the fire department ran smoothly and that emergency services were there when someone
needed them. Lastly, the garden was dedicated to current first responders honoring their hard work and
dedication they provide each and every day.

Located on the east side of the fire station, the garden is the culmination of hundreds of hours of hard
work. Volunteers who weren’t afraid to get dirty were Tom Eade, Dottie Loehnis, Pat Traber, Leslie
DeGroot and Deanna Irwin, working under the leadership of Munds Park’s Gardener Extraordinaire,
Bob Timberman. Bob and many of these volunteers continue to be at the garden nearly every day weeding, planting and watering.
• Pinewood Fire District
Pinewood Property Owners Association, Pinewood Country Club, Pinewood Gardens and the
Pinewood Fire Department Auxiliary made generous donations, along with additional monetary donations from many kind residents, ensuring that this bright spot in the community would become a reality.

Trip to Lake
Powell

The car came to a stop throwing up dust on the dirt
parking lot, after a 10-hour drive from San Diego. I
could hear the complaining, before the doors even
opened. Out of the hot car poured my young cousins;
Matt a typical hard to please 15 year old, Charlie a 10
year old always buried in a book, and Katie a 9 year
old that doesn’t leave the house without a fashionable
change of clothes. My aunt greeted me with, “I told
you we wouldn’t like this!” I announced over the din,
“Everyone take a deep breath and let’s get on the
water.” Before us stood Wahweap Marina and our 75
foot houseboat replete with a ski boat, wave runners,
two gas grills, state-of-the-art entertainment system,
and even a hot tub. In the distance, the shimmering
waters of Lake Powell and the spectacular red cliffs of
the National Park System’s Glen Canyon National
Recreation Area called. We hadn’t finished burying
the anchors on a sandy beach in an idyllic inlet, before
the grumbling was replaced with squeals of joy as the
kids launched themselves into the lake via the houseboat’s water slide. These squeals continued uninterrupted from dawn to dusk for the next week.
I had long wanted to teach the kids how to fish and
the kids couldn’t wait. So, I set them up with poles
and hot dog bait before I fired-up the first round of
Lake Powell
margaritas for my adult family members. They had to
serve themselves though as hollering from the back of
the boat signaled Charlie’s first fish ever. I had barely
finished Charlie’s official “First Fish” pic, when Katie
complained about being “stuck on the bottom”. I knew
better and told her to keep reeling. Her unbounded
excitement of catching her first fish was only moderated by her concern that she might accidentally touch
the fish.
While some adults enjoyed lounging around with a
drink, the rest of us set-off with the ski boat to go tubing. The kids just couldn’t get enough! I got a good
laugh from Katie though, who was afraid to get in at
first. I had to pry out why. It turns out she was afraid
of the fish she had caught and released earlier would
seek revenge.
Lake Powell sits at 3,650 feet and gave us enjoyable 90 degree weather during our visit in early July.
Around midday, dark clouds would suddenly appear.
And, within 45 minutes there were cooling monsoon
rains. This could not have been more ideal, since it
gave me a chance to escape to my cabin for a nap. No

need to check for clear skies, squealing from the kids
on the slide ended nap time.
One of my favorite times of day on Lake Powell is
sunset. As the kids enjoy the slide, adults relax with
drinks and I barbeque chicken and veggies. It’s this
amazing ability for everyone to do what they want
while everyone is still together that makes houseboating so perfect for families. I thought the entertainment
system would see some use, but it only happened one
night when we all watched a film together. More
amazing is that the kids’ electronic games never saw
the light of day the whole trip.
I was excited to show my family scenic Padre Bay
and the big walled canyons found beyond. This was a
day-long adventure and the ski boat was completely
filled. The kids enjoyed this scenery as much as the
activities of the previous days. And, we had fun seeing how far we could go before a canyon dead-ended.

Pinewood News
by Jan Toth
The other day I was talking with some
friends and one lady mentioned that she did not
know anything about the fire department. That
triggered a thought… Wow that sounds like
another Fireline column which sometimes gets
difficult with an issue every other week during
the summer. Any guesses as to what this column is about?
The Pinewood Fire District started in 1973 as
a totally volunteer department and remained
that way until 1983 when two members were
hired year round with a third coming on board
in 1984. We functioned with one person on duty
per day until a second member per shift was
hired in 2000. After that we moved from 2 per
shift to 3 then 4 and now 5 per shift. It may
seem like we have a lot of personnel for a small
area, but remember that we are also a long
way from any other services and any other
help. By the time an ambulance can get here
from Flagstaff when our ambulance is busy, our
secondary crew on duty can already have
patient number two at the hospital. In the past,
we’ve had to call in Highlands to back us up if
we have a fire call. Your home might not be
standing or your heart attack may not be
reversible if we did not have additional personnel right here, right now. The last set of three
new hires were the result of grant funding from
FEMA. We also have a batch of Reserve
Firefighters at our disposal. To be hired as a
Reserve you must be at least EMT and
Firefighter I & II certified just as is required to
apply and test for a full time position here. In
fact, new hires to the full-time ranks come from
a testing process among our Reserves. So,
anyone starting full time is known to members
and the public and like-wise knows our community, our equipment and our operating procedures. The Reserves are required to spend a
certain number of hours here at the station
each month adding a 6th person for responses
during certain times of the week.
It seems like we have a lot of new apparatus
and ambulances also, but everything we
replaced was over 20-30 years old. Each
ambulance is used for a minimum of ten years
before replacement. New radios were purchased with another grant and not taxpayer
dollars. We owe Chief Welsch and especially
his wife, Linda, a big debt of gratitude for all the
additional funds. These funds made purchases
possible that did not take funding from taxes.
And when the economy dumped so did our tax
base. The District is also bound by State rules
and regulations regarding our budget and how
much we are allowed to tax. The help of the
PPOA, the Auxiliary and Linda and John’s grant
writing skills have given us the ability to procure
items we did not have the funds to budget for.
What do all these people do all day? Funny
you should ask… Since our call load is not usually much over 500 calls per year. But ask yourself, if you are the second heart attack in an
hour, do you want an ambulance to have to
come from Flagstaff for you to receive care that
may save your life? Each of our members has
a section or two or three of our budget they are
responsible for. Someone is in charge of all
5

LINE
EMS reporting requirements from our Medical
Direction at Flagstaff Medical Center. Calls are
reviewed each month and reports sent to
Prehospital. Someone is in charge of uniforms,
another has responsibility over repair and purchase of new “tools of the trade.” Someone
else is in charge of building maintenance.
There’s always training. All EMS personnel
have requirements every two years to maintain
their level of certification. They also have to
train on equipment and apparatus. With all of
this they still do construction around the building. When more room was needed for personnel and Reserves, the crews did all the work on
the sleeping quarters. They now have five small
individual rooms for members of each shift and
a small space for sleeping for a Reserve member who spends the night. All the work was
done by crews on duty when not busy on calls.
The next project to be tackled by the crews is
the kitchen remodel. Bet you didn’t know that
our kitchen is inspected annually by the health
department because we hold pot lucks and
fundraising events that entail cooking food. The
new kitchen will give better cooking and baking
capabilities and make it more compliant with
health department regulations.
When our crews are not saving lives, putting
out brush and house fires, they are doing blood
pressure checks, oxygen saturation testing, as
well as cleaning and bandaging minor wounds.
They go out almost daily checking and
installing smoke detectors. We still have a few
smoke detectors left from another grant Linda
and John obtained. The crews also do wood
stove and fire place inspections. They can
check for carbon monoxide and they do have
equipment to take snakes away. Our ambulance is a mini emergency room and our medroom at the fire station is a mini, mini emergency room.
So, if crews are in the station, stop in and
say hello. They give free tours of ambulances
and fire apparatus to kids of all ages. We have
a good group of people – well trained – professional – caring! We are very lucky.

The Quick Cook
The Quick Cook Makes Breakfast for Dinner
By Sharon Arthur Moore
Omigosh! I had no idea! I had been reading about
“cookie butter” and “Speculoos” as the newest
replacement for peanut butter and Nutella. Well,
after collecting dozens of recipes (just because
that’s what I do) I decided I should check out this
new wonder food.
I was thinking, “Yeah. Right. I’m sure it’s tasty,
but what a marketing ploy! Better than Nutella? I
don’t think so!”
Umm. I was wrong. This stuff is so addictive, that
after opening my first jar to check out texture and
appearance, I dipped my finger in the extra cookie
butter on the lid. Just to check the flavor, right?
Then I got a spoonful and licked it clean. I closed
the jar, vowing to save it for cooking.
An hour later, I ate another spoonful. Sigh! Yes, I
am a weak person. There are many imitators out
there, but buy the good stuff. Biscoff (a Belgian
company) has been making the cookies (Lotus
Speculoos) for more than 80 years. They created
the butter from their cookies. An independent
taste test confirmed that you should buy the original. Yeah, I know Trader Joe has a cookie butter,
but it is not as good in my opinion (and that of the
testers).
With the texture of loose peanut butter (like
Nutella’s texture) and the flavor of spiced cookies, how could I not love this stuff. The main
ingredients are: Biscoff cookies, brown sugar, oil,
cinnamon. There’s some other stuff, of course.
My mind started thinking of ways to use the
Biscoff butter spread. I cut plugs out of cupcakes
and fill the holes with Nutella and then ice over
the top to cover the plug. Cookie butter will work
there.
I always add a couple of cinnamon sticks to my
chili. Bet I could add cookie butter instead.
Cream cheese and cookie butter would make a
great fruit dip.
I swirl some Nutella with vanilla ice cream and
cover with chopped salted peanuts. Cookie butter
will work there. It’s clear I can stick cookie butter
in or on lots of my regular dishes. But how to
cook with it so it’s a major part of the dish?
The first recipe in this column is for Fruit Pizza. I
make an easy pizza dough (no yeast, no rising)
that I modified for a dessert pizza. Easy, delicious, serves a crowd. What’s better for our
mountain life-style, eh?
Then I remembered my family-favorite
Cinnamon-Nutella mini-brownies. Oh, yeah! So,
if you hear of a new food item, a really different
thing, not just another brand of mayo, try it. If
you like it, substitute it in recipes to get a different food product.
Quick Cook Tip #17 Try a new ingredient in a
favorite old recipes.
For dough:
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Prepare a cookie
sheet with non-stick spray.
In a medium bowl, blend 2 cups flour, baking
powder, salt, brown sugar, and cinnamon well.
Set aside.
In a small bowl, blend cookie butter into the
yogurt. Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture
and thoroughly blend. This makes a big messy
ball of dough. If it is too sticky to handle to mix
well (I use my hands), add more flour until the
ball “hangs together”.
Turn dough ball onto floured surface and knead 35 times until the ball is smooth and not too sticky.
Make a big flat round of dough to look like a
pizza. (Or divide the dough into eight small balls
and make individual pizza rounds.)
Bake for 10-12 minutes or until just starting to
brown. Remove from oven and cool thoroughly.
While the pizza round(s) cools, prepare the toppings.
For topping:
Blend the cream cheese, cookie butter, cinnamon,
and brown sugar into a smooth paste.
When baked dough is room temperature, evenly
spread on the cream cheese mixture. Cover with
fruit and serve immediately.
Cut up fruits to put on top of the cream cheese
mixture.
Cookie Butter Brownies (makes 12 mini
muffins)
½ cup cookie butter
1 large egg
2 teaspoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 teaspoons oil
5 tablespoons flour
½ cup chopped nuts
Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a 12-cup minimuffin pan with paper or foil liners or spray with
non-stick cooking spray.
Put the cookie butter, egg, and oil in a medium
bowl and whisk until smooth and well blended.
Add the flour and whisk until blended.
Spoon the batter into the prepared muffin tin
(about 3/4 full) and sprinkle with the chopped
nuts.
Bake until a toothpick comes out dry, 11 to 12
minutes (longer for a chewier brownie).
Set on a rack to cool completely. Serve immediately or cover and store at room temperature for
up to 3 days. You can sprinkle on powdered sugar
mixed with cocoa to make them prettier. Or do
what I do: ice them with more cookie butter!
Fruit Pizza
For dough:
2+ cups of flour, plus more for kneading
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons brown sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 cup plain Greek yogurt
½ cup cookie butter
There you have it! Cookie Butter is my new
favorite cooking flavor. Experiment. Let me know
what you come up with!
For topping:
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
½ cup cookie butter
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 teaspoons brown sugar
Assorted fruit for topping

PINEWOOD PLAYERS NEWS
In my last article, I talked about the audition process, and the meeting directors
have in early September to determine which actors will be asked to play which
roles.
Once actors have accepted the roles, they’ll each get a copy of the script, and
on some beautiful September weekend afternoon, before everyone leaves for the
valley, the actors from each of the plays will gather on somebody’s front porch,
script in hand, to read through the lines together. Little things might get changed.
Like, maybe the script calls for an actor to say, “Last year, when we were still in
high school…” but our actor is 70 years old. So we might need to tweak that line a
bit.
The first play on the schedule for our summer productions usually starts practicing in January or February. This year that play will be Hallelujah Girls, directed
by Lynn Rouyer. She’s got an article in this edition of the paper. You might want
to look for it. It’s called “Director’s Chair”, and in it, she talks about some of the
activity that goes on during the winter with the plays – especially the first play of
the season. Lynn should know all about the work that goes into directing a play;
she’s directed over a hundred plays in her lifetime!
We can usually get into the theater up here in Munds Park by mid-May, but the
building doesn’t have a heater, so when we have chilly spring weather like we did
this year, the actors either have to arrive at the theater all bundle up in winter coats
and mittens or we need practice elsewhere. By the beginning of June, though, the
actors are working on the stage and our volunteer carpenters are hard at work, too,
turning the stage into whatever fantasy world the director has cooked up.
Next time, I’ll talk about tech week and the work that goes on behind the stage.

What Are Your Excuses for Not Investing?
Sudoku
We all make excuses. Most of the time,
they’re pretty harmless. But you could be hurting yourself if you make excuses for not taking
action in some areas — and one of those areas is
investing.
Not investing, or not investing enough,
can have serious consequences. In fact, a lot of
people are poorly prepared financially for retirement. Consider these figures from the Federal
Reserve: The median retirement account value
for individuals between 35 and 44 is just
$42,700; for people 55 to 64, the corresponding
figure is $103,000. These figures are frighteningly low, especially when retirement can easily
last two or three decades.
In short, you need to invest. So, what’s
stopping you? Here are some common excuses:
• “I’ll do it later.” The longer you wait before
you start investing, the less time you have to
accumulate money, and the less likely it may be
that you’ll achieve your goals, such as a comfortable retirement lifestyle. If you haven’t
begun investing, do it today.
• “I don’t have enough money to invest.” The
cost of living is unquestionably high, and you
may feel that you have just enough money to
pay your bills before your next paycheck. But if
you look for ways to economize, you may well
be able to free up even a little money to invest
each month. And then, when your salary goes
up, you can increase the amount you invest.
• “I’ll have Social Security.” Social Security
benefits generally account for only about 40%
of an individual’s pre-retirement income,
according to the Social Security Administration.
Unless you want to scale back your lifestyle
greatly during your retirement years, you’ll need
to supplement Social Security with your
employer-backed retirement account, such as a
401(k), plus your own investments, such as
those that go inside an IRA.
• “Can I really invest enough money for my
retirement?” Consider this: Going back to 1990,
if you had invested $10,000 in the stocks that
make up the S&P 500, and simply held on to
these stocks, you would have amassed more
than $76,000 after taxes by the end of 2013. Of
course, past performance of the market is not a
guarantee of how it will perform in the future,
and the S&P 500 is an unmanaged index and is
not meant to depict an actual investment — but
this illustration still shows that patient, diligent,
long-term investing can produce positive results.
• “I don’t know where to begin.” If you work
for a company that provides a retirement plan
such as a 401(k) or something similar, you’ve
already got a great place to begin. You only
need to sign up for the plan and start deferring a
part of your salary, and you’re an investor. It’s
also quite easy to open an IRA, another popular
retirement savings account. In any case, if you
have doubts about how to get started investing,
you will find it valuable to meet with a qualified
investment professional.
Don’t let excuses get in the way of developing good investment habits. With time, determination and effort, you can overcome many of
the obstacles you thought prevented you from
becoming a full-fledged investor.

County Continues to Press Companies to Update Addresses in Munds Park
At last month’s Neighborhood Watch meeting, several residents voiced their concerns about delivery companies and online navigational/mapping services that have not yet updated their systems to match the current address information from the County’s 911 Re-Addressing Project
that was implemented in Munds Park several years ago. This is understandably frustrating for residents expecting packages or who might have
friends traveling to Munds Park that cannot find where they live because of outdated online navigation information.
It also is frustrating for the County’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) division. Since the onset of the re-addressing project, GIS has
worked diligently to provide updated address and street information to all of its customers including delivery and online navigational/mapping
stakeholders.
All major re-addressing initiatives require that updated datasets be provided as soon as possible to key online mapping companies, delivery
companies (such as FedEx and UPS) and to first responders that include area fire departments and 911 emergency dispatching. In addition, the
GIS division conducts periodic checks of various companies and online service providers to see whether their address information is consistent
with the County’s current address data.
Delivery companies such as FedEx, UPS and the U.S. Postal Service, along with service companies like Arizona Public Service and Guardian
Medical update their address data four to six times per year. Online navigation companies do so less frequently, but still should have updated
their data since the re-addressing occurred.
Yahoo Maps and MapQuest both appear to have updated their online map data. Google is currently not showing any updated information,
despite the fact that the GIS division has provided Google with the County’s new address data several times during the last few years.
GIS again reached out to Google in late May and again provided this data for upload to their maps. Google responded that they are currently
working on updating their system but could not provide a hard deadline for its completion.
Although the GIS division remains committed to this follow-up process, it is important to understand that the County cannot control how or
when these private entities update their data to reflect current information. While GIS will continue to monitor the situation, residents are
encouraged to contact the customer relations departments of delivery or online navigation companies regarding any outstanding problems with
a particular address.

Pickleball
By Annie Weissman
I went to my first pickleball lesson last week, as per my summer
resolution number two. First I ordered a pickleball racket and six balls
from Amazon. During the class Doug suggested light weight rackets so
we wouldn’t damage our wrists. I’ll go to Sports Authority when I’m
in the Valley as no place in Flagstaff sells pickleball rackets.
Doug Pusateri is kind enough to lend his expertise and endless patience
to introduce novices to the sport. A pickleball court is one quarter of
the size of a tennis court. The rackets look like ping pong paddles on
steroids. The balls are whiffle balls, only a little smaller. They make a
satisfying “knock” when smacked by the
paddle.
Five people showed up for the class.
Doug went over the rules and how the
game was scored. He set us up to try it.
Three of the class members looked physically fit and after a few volleys I could
tell they were coordinated. One fellow
looked like he might be in my lack of talent group, but he was much
better than me after fifteen minutes. I noticed I was on the losing team
both games we played after switching partners.
Some people have natural athletic ability. I am not one of those
people. When I went to summer camp as a teenager I took private tennis lessons twice a week for the entire summer. I never learned the
game. The instructor did teach me how to balance the racket on my fingertips. He told me I was a hopeless case. It reminded me of the time in
fifth grade when the chorus director told me, just before our concert, to
please only mouth the words. Or the time when I was nine and my
piano teacher told my mother not to waste any more money on lessons.
My second husband was a terrific golfer. I bought clubs and took
lessons. I wasn’t any good but I could hit it fairly straight. I believe it’s
called “pitch and piddle down the middle.” I hardly ever kept score
when I played with friends. If I was holding the group up I just threw
the ball towards the hole.
I believe that anyone can learn the mechanics of writing and do a
decent job, but it requires talent to write like Poe or Twain. I figured
the same should hold true for pickleball. If I practiced volleying and
serving I could play with other people without embarrassment. I went
to the pickleball court another morning and spent half an hour volleying against the wall. I had six balls. I waited until I hit all six over the
wall before I retrieved them. It was quite a workout. I figured I have
another week or two of practicing before I’ll join a beginners’ game.
My eight year-old granddaughter is coming up for a week to go to golf
camp. I have two rackets so I’m sure I can get her to practice with me.
She loves it when she’s better at something than I am and it doesn’t
bother me at all.

PINEWOOD IS PERFECT -PASS IT ON
(Part 2)
By Jan Toth
First off I need to make a correction.
Unfortunately, instead of looking through
my notes I relied on my memory… Big
mistake. It was Linda Van Deren’s fatherin-law who worked on the Clubhouse construction, not her grandfather. Sorry!
Back in the day, the Northernaire
Country Club was the center of life in the
small resort community. It was one party
after another at the Club. Due to road situations, invitations were delivered on horseback, door to door. There was no lack of
reasons for a party, Christmas. Halloween,
German, French or Mexican Freedom Day,
or just for the heck of it. One couple did it
up right with hors d’oeuvres, corsages for
the ladies. We did not find out if it was
black or white tie. Everyone dressed in their
finest no matter how much mud they had to
walk through. They then relied on the summer monsoon rains schedule that rolled in
about 2 p.m. and was totally gone by 4 p.m.
The clubhouse at that time included the
kitchen dining room, bar and ladies locker
room.
that we received a small portable switching
station and our own 286 prefix.
Munds Park businesses started with a
Standard Gasoline Station which opened in
1960. It was operated by Art Snyder who
also worked as Greens keeper for the
Northernaire Country Club. It was in the
gas station self-service days and traffic was
light so you honked your horn and Art came
running.
Somewhere in the early 60’s, 60 or 62,
the building now known as the Pinewood
Restaurant was constructed as a general
store by Donald Bruzdzinski. He persuaded
his Uncle Robert E. “Robby” Wilson of
Flagstaff to operate it. Robby had operated
the Navajo Trading Co. for 11 years. This
was really the General Store depicted in the
old movies of the West. Not only did it have
the usual merchandise, but also a lunch
counter with sweet rolls, doughnuts and
coffee for breakfast, sandwiches, cold pop
or iced tea for lunch and was run by his
wife Gladys. Per Linda Wilson Radosevich,
Gladys and Robby’s daughter, the store was
frugally stocked, since Munds Park at that
time was mostly a place of summer resi-

In 1958 a Caterpillar was used to level a
runway at the airfield on the west side of
what is now I-17. A windsock was used to
determine from which direction to land.
In the way of roads, it was mostly dirt
and mud. There was an arroyo across
Pinewood Blvd that was so deep that cars
traveling through it totally disappeared.
Since -17 was not yet built, the trip to town
was long and often very muddy. Dick Gray
was club manager at the time and his wife,
Wilma, manned a CB radio. According to
Dick, residents heading to town would contact Wilma and let her know they were
going to town, then let her know they got
there, and one more time when they headed
home. There was a 50/50 chance you would
not get home and friends would have an
idea where to go to pull you out of the mud.
ln fact, Thorne and Ruben Donnelly pulled
people out of the mud with a special vehicle
made for the Alaska Highway with lights,
generator, winch and it was 4x4. You had
two roads into Munds Park in those days...
To get to Mormon Lake and on to here you
either went through Prescott to Sedona and
up Schnebly Hill or went to Wickenburg,
Yarnell Hill, to Prescott through Chino
Valley to Ashfork to Williams to Flagstaff
Lake Mary Rd to Mormon Lake and over
240 (a good road at that time) to Pinewood.
The golf course was just beginning to
shape up and was challenging to say the
least. The clubhouse was small but had
many activities to keep people busy i.e.
bridge, other card games, art shows, lectures and a homey atmosphere where everyone could get together. Electricity was not
very dependable and it was often out for
more than a few hours. However candlelight dinners and a warm fireplace weren’t
all that bad. Phone service was through an
open line from Sedona and service was a
two party line. In fact, it wasn’t until 1974

and jam, soda pop, cookies and potato
chips. The chewing tobacco was mostly for
the cowboys that came through going to or
from Mormon Lake, either hauling their
horses and gear, or riding. With his liquor
license in jeopardy, Robby often had to ask
the cowboys to take their beers off the
porch to drink them. They would walk
across the road and sit under the pines to
drink their beer and eat their Vienna
sausages. Robby let them water their horses
and dogs from the outside faucet. Dogs and
horses were always allowed to drink on the
property!

submit in one of the ways indicated in order to guarantee your entry as
there may be a maximum number of vehicles permitted. Also, the
distribution of candy or other items during the parade is now prohibited
but the participants can go to the carnival after the parade and offer
them to the attendees. The 6/22 issue of the Pinewood News will
have a map of the route and final information before the parade.

worthwhile cause from across Arizona.
The High Country Charity Golf Outing was started five years ago by individuals who wanted to support the men and women in our military who have given
so much for our country. Over the last four tournaments we have raised over
$170,000.00!!! We are very proud of our achievements and the hard work of
many people connected with our tournament over the years. Our goal this
year is to raise over $100,000.00.
This year we are excited to expand and donate funds to the local chapter of
the “Military Order Of The Purple Heart” in Flagstaff, Arizona. They were
chartered by Act of Congress For Combat Wounded Veterans in 1958. The
Military Order Of the Purple Heart is composed of military men and women
who received the Purple Heart Medal for wounds suffered in combat.
There are a number of ways that you can participate: become a sponsor, secure a foursome, donate gift prizes for our raffle and silent auction or attend
the luncheon/auction and enjoy the festivities. Also, the outing is a great way
to market your services to many of Arizona’s top business leaders. This
packet contains both sponsorship information and a golf registration form.
The sponsorship donation is due by June 15, 2015 so that we may prepare
for the event.
Watch for our upcoming Pinewood Fire Department and Auxiliary 16-month
calendar to go on sale. It will be the fireman but in the jobs they do every
day for us, on freeway accidents, fires, and training. For the Auxiliary it will
be pictures of the things we do like Kids Safety Day, The Fall/Halloween
Party, and the Santa Ride around the Park.
A limited number of business card size advertising spots will be available at
$25 an ad. Contact an Auxiliary member with your business card to get in
on this great advertising deal.

PHOENIX — Motorists headed to the Flagstaff Airport, Fort Tuthill County

morning on Monday, June 8.
This restriction will be in place continuously until early July while work is

Coconino National Forest issued an updated and revised Motor
Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) on April 15 which shows all of the roads,
trails and areas open to motorized vehicles on the national forest.
The map is free to the public and can be downloaded for use on smartphones, tablets and Garmin GPS devices. Hard copies of the MVUM will be
available at all Coconino National Forest offices and many local businesses.
In addition to hard copy maps, forest visitors can now get a free electronic
MVUM, which is a color map with shaded relief topography, game management units, hiking trails, and all designated motorized routes and areas. Using
this electronic map on one’s smartphone through the Avenza PDF Maps app
incorporates GPS location, meaning one can see where they are on the map as
they drive or hike on the national forest. Instructions for how to get the free
map app on your mobile device can be found at http://go.usa.gov/PEa (case
sensitive).
The 2015 MVUM includes a number of updates and corrections made as a
result of public input received over the past year. More substantive route
changes requested by the public will need to be reviewed through the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process. The forest expects to propose changes to the system of designated motor vehicle routes and areas in
late 2015 to begin the NEPA process.
If you discover errors on the 2015 MVUM, notice problems with road
signs on the Coconino National Forest, or have any general comments about
motorized use policies or designations, please visit the website and complete

How is Your Relationship With
Your Financial Planner?
Over the 20 years I have been in practice, I have encountered many different
situations, problems, and opportunities to help as a Financial Planner. The
opportunities to grow with my clientele, has to have been the most rewarding
for me.
Working with people is what I do for a living and building long term relationships is what it is all about. Instead of me submitting one of my many blog articles I have written about a specific product or process I thought instead this
would be a great time to just talk about what makes me tick a bit and share
some of my ideas on how I like to interact with the people I work with. You
see the key word here is “people”.
No matter what your level of income or where you live people all have hopes,
goals, and dreams. These dreams and desires are what make the world go
round. I could build you the perfect financial plan, strategically designed to
the tee, but if it does not really help you with what you really want, chances
are it may fall to the wayside as time passes. I have found that concentrating
on the things that really matter is where the true connection is.
When I go into depth about how you wish you had time for a better relationship with your grandchildren, or how your dream has always been to see
Africa, or that you feel your business has not been successful as you had
hoped, or how you really want to make sure your daughter has that perfect
wedding, this is when I start to see the fabric you are truly made of. This fabric is the building block for my work. We then go about building a process
with these things as the goal.
I could concentrate on showing you spreadsheets on the past rates of return I
have gotten for people or I could show you my step by step strategic process
for securing your retirement income, and paying less taxes. These things are
important no doubt, and we take them very serious, however they seem to always take a back seat to what really matters.
This is why I love to get to know people and build my relationships from the
ground up. The other parts of the plan will get done correctly without a doubt,
but in order to stay on track and make sure we get it done I have to constantly
refer back to WHY you are doing all this in the first place. This creates a relationship with my clients that not many financial planners can say they have,
and this is why I love what I do.
Remember this when choosing your financial life planner, does he or she
have a strategy to keep you on the correct path, and are they truly a catalyst to
get things done?

The Boys In The Boat
by Daniel James Brown
The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and their Epic Quest
for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics by Daniel James
Brown.
This book is a sterling example of what is often described as
narrative nonfiction – “joining good research with compelling, character-driven storytelling--reads like a novel”. I
might add that it reads not like any ordinary novel, but one
filled with drama and suspense even though we know the
outcome.
It is the story of the University of Washington’s 1936 eightoar crew and coxswain, made up of sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers
who defeated elite and prestigious rivals such as Harvard and Princeton and sons of
aristocrats from Cambridge and Oxford. It’s a story about beating the odds and
finding hope in the most desperate of times. Much like Seabiscuit of the same
Great Depression era, it gave the country an underdog to cheer for. It reminded
them what can be achieved when everyone quite literally pulls together. Author
Brown, says, “For me, the story is very much a metaphor for what that whole generation managed to do.”
As author David Laskin (The Children’s Blizzard and The Long Way Home)
praises it so aptly, “I read the last fifty pages with white knuckles and the last
twenty-five with tears in my eyes. History, sports, human interest, weather, suspense, design, physics, oppression and inspiration—this book has it all.”
In fact, there is so much to discuss in this book, I have tried for a month to write
this review but always fell short in describing its magnificence. A big accolade, I
know but so deserving. Since my own words seemed inadequate, I decided the
best approach was to share the author’s words in his prologue which captured my
heart immediately.
“This book was born on a cold, drizzly, late spring day when I clambered over the
split-rail cedar fence that surrounds my pasture and made my way through wet
woods to a modest frame house where Joe Rantz lay dying. I knew only two
things about Joe when his daughter Judy opened the door that day. I knew that in
his mid-seventies he had single-handedly hauled a number of cedar logs down a
mountain, then hand-split the rails and cut the posts and installed all 2,224 linear
feet of the pasture fence I had just climbed over. And I knew he had been one of
the nine young men from the state of Washington who shocked both the rowing
world and Adolph Hitler at the 1936 Olympics…he talked about learning the art of
rowing, about shells and oars…about long cold hours on the water under steelgray skies…marching into the Olympic Stadium in Berlin and his crewmates….it
was when he tried to talk about the boat that his words began to falter and tears
welled up in his bright eyes…something mysterious and beyond definition…it was
about a shared experience when nine good-hearted men gave everything they had
for one another, bound together forever by pride and respect and love. I told Joe
I’d like to write a book about his rowing days and he said he’d like that. But then
his voice broke once more and he admonished me gently, ‘But not just about me. It
has to be about the boat.’”
The actual boat, the old wooden The Husky Clipper, today rests on the top rack of
the University of Washington boathouse. It was built by George Popcock, internationally famous for designing and handcrafting the best and swiftest racing shells
in the world of crew racing. A native of England, he was recruited in 1912 to build
shells for the University of Washington. The George Pocock Racing Shell Company in Seattle became the leading producer of quality racing shells in the country,
making 80 percent of all those used by college crews in America. His boats were
coveted by colleges and rowing clubs around the world. Among the innovations he
developed were sliding seats, lightweight oars, special oarlocks, and a unique steering mechanism, replacing the tiller.

WHERE HAS THE PINEWOOD NEWS BEEN?
by Lynne Rouyer
Lynn and Lou Rouyer, residents of Munds Park, have just returned from France.
Lynn's bucket list included walking the beaches of Normandy. They joined good
friends and Lou's sister and husband for a 15 day vacation. Did you know that
there is a miniature Statue of Liberty near the Eiffel Tower? This was quite a
pleasant surprise. Can you imagine walking from the Arc de Triomphe down the
Champs Elysees with the many elegant shops, sidewalk cafes, and then you find a
Disney Store? The time in Paris was magnifique. Of course, a stop at the Moulin
Rouge was fun, and then the Palace of Versailles was outstanding with the art
work, gardens and furnishings. Talk about living like a king? While on the River
Cruise up the Seine, we visited Van Gogh's home, cemetery and then on to
Monet's gardens, the famous Japanese Bridge and his cottage. Everything was
blooming beautifully. The locals said that we hit it just right.
The day at Normandy was raining, cold, and windy. The weather conditions were
repeated, just like it must have been on D-Day, June 6, 1944. The American
Cemetery with so many white crosses so perfectly placed, the museum that
brought to life all that we have read about WWII. Then the beach was a time to
meditate on the many lives that were lost. What a priceless experience with so
many memories to bring home.

Birds of Munds Park #63
Purple Martins
by Margaret Dyekman
On a recent Saturday afternoon I went to Lake Odell to see if I could get some inspiration for my next article. It was a lovely day, with the sun getting lower into
the west, so perfect for bird viewing across the water. I was not disappointed –
there was an Osprey hunting, and I witnessed it take two dives. Its second dive
was successful, as it came up with a fish in its talons and then flew across the
lake to a tree to eat its dinner.
I next started looking at the swallows and easily identified the Tree Swallows and
the Violet-Green Swallows, but then paused and thought, “What is THAT one?”
There were a small number of larger and very dark swallows flying that I didn’t
recognize. They were noisy, and some of them
landed in the tree tops to the left of me, so I was
able to get a better look through my binoculars. I
took out my iPhone and looked up swallows on my
two birding aps. Finally, I thought “Oh my gosh,
those are Purple Martins!” This was a species I
had never identified in Munds Park and really didn’t think I would ever see here. The last time I saw
Purple Martins was in Memphis at the Mississippi
River before we went to visit Graceland (yes, to
see Elvis Presley’s estate, which was a very fun
trip for us.)
Purple Martin
Purples Martins are loved by many people across
the United States, mostly in the East where they are much more common than out
West. When you see large bird houses with many units – typically 10-20 entrance holes and usually mounted high atop a pole – that is a Purple Martin
house. After doing some research on line, I learned fascinating facts about these
birds.
•Purple Martins are secondary cavity nesters – meaning they don’t make their
own cavities like woodpeckers, for example, and instead use natural cavities in
trees or cliffs or ones make by other birds. However, the birds in the Eastern
U.S. are almost now exclusively artificial home nesters – they use man-made
structures. Native Americans started this phenomena centuries ago when they
hung dried out, empty gourds with a hole drilled in it for the birds. Today it is
thought that if humans did not supply Purple Martins with artificial homes, the
species would entirely disappear from the Eastern U.S.
•In the Western U.S., however, Purple Martins still tend to use natural cavities
versus man-made multi-compartment housing. I have noticed Purple Martin
housing on at least one property around the Pinewood Country Club but never
have seen it being used. The birds in the West tend to stay near water – for their
source of flying-insect food – and they like areas with tall pines and cottonwoods. In other parts of Arizona with the right conditions they will nest in cavities in cacti.
•Purple Martins eat only insects, which they catch in flight. There is a common
misconception that they devour mosquitoes. They fly much higher than mosquitoes do and they feed mostly during the daytime hours, when mosquitoes are not
active, so mosquitoes are not part of their diet.
•I could go on and on, but instead for now I will point you to the Purple Martin
Conservation Association, a non-profit association devoted entirely to the conservation of this species. The website is www.purplemartin.org. I hope to share
more information about the Purple Martins in future articles.
Some of us are talking about doing a bird walk one late afternoon or early morning in July or August, so if you are interested in participating, please let me know.
You can reach me at [email protected], and you can read all the
archived Birds of Munds Park articles and leave your comments at www.birdladyblog.wordpress.com. I welcome your questions, reports of sightings, and your
ideas for future articles.

HALLELUJAH GIRLS
Director's Chair: Lynn Rouyer
What do the following have in common? ABANDONED CHURCH, GIRL
FRIENDS, BUCKET LISTS, and A DAY SPA... It is the Pinewood Players first play of the 2015 season, HALLELUJAH GIRLS ! The girls gather
in the local abandoned church as Sugar Lee's bucket list becomes a reality:
A Day Spa! Of course, the very talented playwrights Jessie Jones,
Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Wooten include much laughter, quirky happenings and funny antics in this side-splitting, joyful comedy.
The fun begins when Lynn, the director (that’s me), gets the vision on how
to take words on a page and put them on the stage with: actors, sets, props,
lighting, sound and much more. The actors spend time learning lines and
rehearsing. The set construction crew goes to work on building the set.
The props, costumes, and set furnishings are gathered; final rehearsals, all
volunteers, and VOILA! We have a very funny play!
How are you planning on spending your Friday or Saturday evenings or
Sunday afternoons in June? Why not come see the results of all our hard
work? You will be greeted by our wonderful ushers, taken to your seats, the
lights dim, you sit back and fantasy happens. You are taken to a new place
to enjoy the next 2 hours or so. We have the best volunteers ever! And on
Father's Day, June 21st , there will be a special drawing of a $25 restaurant
gift card! Well, you will certainly want to see this play and walk away
knowing the Pinewood Players puts on plays that are equal to any that you
might see in the big city. So get tickets now, and you might want to get
started on YOUR bucket list.
Tickets are a bargain at $15. You can order tickets on line at
www.pinewoodplayers.com or go to the box office any Wednesday or Saturday mornings from 10:00 AM until noon.
Show Time: Fridays and Saturdays June 12, 13, 19, 20 at 7 p.m., and
Sundays, June 14 and 21st at 2:30 p.m.

PINEWOOD NINERS GOLF ASSOCIATION
By Carla Marks
Every turn it seems like you can go no farther. But, as you get to what seems like the
end, a passage is revealed and you turn the corner to more water extending into the distance.
Another great aspect of houseboating are the special one-on-one opportunities with
family. One of my favorites was taking Katie on a waverunner to explore the lake. It
was just an hour or so of being away, but it seemed like much more. It’s an experience
we both will remember.
Finally, beautiful weather has arrived in Pinewood. Now, we just
have to wait for the road construction to finish on Pinewood Blvd. and
we can have our “Perfect Pinewood” that we all love. The Niners are
now well underway and we have had five weekly play days. The number of 9’ers playing increases each week. On
May 20th we played a game called “Thrilling Threesomes.” The results
were as follows:
The biggest debate before the trip was how long to make it. I suggested 7 days and
everyone recoiled in settling on 5 days. In a snap of the fingers it was our last night,
and everyone was in shock that the time had passed so fast.
This trip didn’t stop the kids’ complaining, but now it’s “When are we going houseboating on Lake Powell again?!”

Book Review contiued from page 37
We hope everyone gets signed up for these play days in the Niners
book in the Pro Shop.
However, it was not only his craftsmanship in building that made Mr. Pocock unique,
but the visionary philosophy he shared with the crew to strive constantly for the ideal
and to respect the spiritual side of life. Each chapter begins with a photo and his quote,
such as, “It’s a great art, is rowing. It’s the finest art there is. It’s a symphony of motion. And when you’re rowing well, why it’s nearing perfection. And when you’re near
perfection, you’re touching the Divine. It touches the you of yous. Which is your
soul.”
Other characters on this elaborate world stage Brown reveals are the crew coaches of
the day: Tom Bolles, Al Ulbrickson and Ky Ebright—their coaching philosophies,
their relationship to each other, their rivalries, losses and victories. When Ulbrickson
retired in 1959, he said one of the highlights of his career was the day he put Joe Rantz
in his Olympic boat for the first time and watched the boat take off.
We are also taken into Nazi Germany as they prepare for the Olympics. We are given
historical glimpses of key members of the Nazi Ministry of Public Enlightenment and
Propoganda, run by Joseph Goebbels. We learn of the brilliant Leni Riefenstahl, the
first German female to produce and star in her own films. She won the affection of the
Fuhrer as she produced many successful propaganda films , one which documented the
massive Nazi rally at Nuremberg in 1934. Her film of the 1936 Olympics was meant
to record the splendors of the Reich, but nine boys from Washington denied her a
proper ending.
In the author’s words, “It’s harder to imagine a starker representation of good and evil
brought face-to-face than these nine American kids dressed in ragged old sweatshirts
and mismatched shorts racing against regimented blonde oarsman in crisp white uniforms with swastikas on their chests.”
Back to Brown’s thoughts after his first meeting with Joe Rantz. “As more of his story
unfolded I began to see the elements of a great tale there—intense competition
amongst individuals, bitter rivalry between schools, a boy left alone in the world (Joe),
a fiercely demanding coach, a wise mentor, a love interest, even an evil stepmother…
and the climax of the story played out on an enormously dramatic stage—the 1936
Olympics, under the gaze of Hitler himself. What more could a story teller ask for?”
As a reader, I don’t think we could have asked for more. And I, who knew zero about
crewing, now have a tremendous respect for the sport. With Father’s Day approaching,
this might be just the perfect gift for someone who loves a gripping tale.

Plans are progressing well for our annual Invitational. Kathy Vogt
and her able associates have things well in hand for a most successful
event. The theme is “Queen of Clubs” and should be great fun on July
15th. If you want to help with this event, please contact Kathy at 623680-1726. Also, sign ups for playing in the Invitational are first come,
first served. We have a limited number of spaces available. The sign
up sheet is posted in the ladies’ lounge.
If you are new to Pinewood or to golf, please consider joining our
group. We always welcome new members. The purpose of the
Pinewood Niners Golf Association is to provide it’s members with a
weekly round of 9 holes of golf in a social setting. Although we desire to
improve our scores through a better understanding of the game and it’s
rules, the group stresses courtesy to and support for each of it’s members. The Niners are always happy to welcome new members, regardless of the level of golf you play. Our only requirement is that you be a
full member of Pinewood Country Club. If you are interested in joining a
fun, friendly group of ladies, please contact Lori Prescott at 602-3902648 for information and registration forms. Come join, play and have
fun with us!!

A Great Home Ideal
for a Second Home
in the Mountains!
Prop. 403 Road Improvement Projects
Underway in Munds Park
17065 Teal Place
A very busy construction season is now underway in Munds Park. Coconino
County is investing approximately $2 million in two major Roads Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) projects funded by Proposition 403, the County’s Road
Maintenance Sales Tax that was approved by voters last November. These projects include the Pinewood Boulevard Reconstruction Project and the Munds
Wash Bridge Repair Project.
Pinewood Boulevard
Reconstruction Project
The $1.5 million Pinewood Boulevard Reconstruction Project broke ground earlier this month. The project’s contractor, Fann Contracting Inc. is milling up the
old section of Pinewood Boulevard from I-17 to the Munds Wash Bridge and
will soon be installing a new base and asphalt overlay. Some curb repair along
the construction corridor also is part of this project.
The Pinewood Boulevard Reconstruction Project is scheduled for completion
by mid- to late-July. Traffic control will be in place along the construction corridor. Pinewood Boulevard will remain open to traffic throughout construction
and is expected to be paved prior to the Fourth of July Parade. For more information about this project, please visit the County’s project web page at
www.coconino.az.gov/PinewoodBlvdCIP.
Munds Wash Bridge Repair Project
The second local Prop. 403-funded road improvement project is for the Munds Wash
Bridge. The Munds Wash Bridge Repair
Project includes replacement of the bridge
deck and existing railing and the addition of
a guard rail on the approach side of the
bridge. The bridge deck repair is being done
one lane at a time so as to keep the bridge
open to traffic throughout construction. The
project's contractor, J. Banicki Construction,
Inc. has completed demolition of the westbound portion of the bridge and is installing the new bridge deck for this section. The $425,000 project is scheduled for completion in July. More
information about this project is available at:
www.coconino.az.gov/MundsWashBridgeCIP.
Both of these Prop. 403-funded CIP projects represent long-term investments by
Coconino County to address deteriorating pavement and improve the safety of
County roads in Munds Park. However, completing them during our very short
construction season will require a significant amount of work during the next
few months. Construction work is primarily being conducted Monday through
Thursday. However, weather conditions or other unforeseen factors might require that some work be done outside this schedule so that these projects can be
finished on time.
The safety of Munds Park residents and construction crews remains the
County’s top priority during this busy construction season. As our seasonal population grows with the return of summertime residents, it is especially important
to be safe and aware of traffic control and construction operations in our neighborhood!
The County apologizes for any inconvenience that construction might cause
Munds Park residents and asks for your continued patience and cooperation as
they work to improve our roads. If you have any questions about these projects,
then please contact Public Works at (928) 679-8300 or via email at

MUNDS PARK COMMUNITY CHURCH
UPDATE
www.mpcchurch.com
by Mac Jett
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
JOY AND HAPPINESS
Don't get me wrong...both joy and happiness are good, but one lasts forever
and one is fleeting. That's why, even
though Webster uses one to define the
other, the dictionary definition is not
complete enough.
Specifically, the dictionary defines
happiness as: “favored by circumstances, lucky or fortunate, showing or
causing a feeling of great pleasure,
joy...and it defines joy as a very glad
feeling, happiness, delight.
Guess which one is fleeting.
The Bible has a different take on these
two words. The Bible teaches that
happiness is fleeting because it depends on things outside of ourselves
(Genesis 30:1-13 and Deuteronomy
24:5). But joy (which comes from the
word rejoice) is eternal because it is
based on our relationship with Jesus
which in itself is the source of joy.
The book of Philippians is a great
study of what joy really means.
I DIDN'T KNOW THAT!
The word “testament” (i.e. Old Testament and New Testament) means
covenant or contract.
Dogs are mentioned 14 times in the
Bible, and lions 55 times, but domestic
cats are not mentioned at all. Oh, well.
Psalm 118 verse 8 is in the center of
the Bible: "It is better to take refuge
in the Lord than to trust in man."
That seems really appropriate.
Paul wrote the most books in the New
Testament...14 in all. However, Luke
wrote the most words.
IT'S GOING TO BE A GREAT
SUMMER
Returning friends and neighbors signal
the beginning of all of the summer activities at MPCC. Here are a few of
them...and when they meet:
Women's Bible Study—Tuesdays at
10am at the church.
Men's Bible Study—Tuesdays at 7pm
at the church.
Ladies Fellowship—meets on the
third Saturday each month. Their next
meeting will be on Saturday, June 20th
at 10:30am at the church.
Vacation Bible School—Monday,
June 15th through Friday, June 19th.
There's still time to register your children or grandchildren for this much
anticipated yearly event. VBS is for
all children 3-11 and there is no
charge. Registration forms are available at the Post Office and are picked
up daily. This year Sue Naff is the Director and the theme is “Camp Kilimanjaro”...it's going to be great!
Our new pastor, Steve Bowyer, and
the Board of Elders have big plans for
summer activities this year...yes, it will
be a busy, busy summer at MPCC.
WHO ARE WE?
We are a non-denominational church,
which simply means that regardless of
your denominational background (or
lack of same) you are welcome to attend and worship with us Sunday
mornings at 10:30am. Adult and children's Sunday school begins at 9am
Sunday mornings.
ONGOING AT MPCC
On the first Sunday of each month the
church offers Communion to all who
are present. This is an open Communion, which means you do not have to
be a member of the church to participate.
The second Sunday of each month is
potluck Sunday. Everyone is invited
whether you bring food or not. This is
a great time to meet people in a casual
environment, make new friends and
enjoy good food. The potluck follows
the 10:30am Sunday service.
YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED
If you don’t have a church home here
in Northern Arizona, we hope you’ll
consider joining us. We would love to
see you at any, or all, of our weekly
activities.
