COMMODORE’S COMMENTS
My year as Vice Commodore has
passed incredibly quickly and I
would like to thank everyone who
has helped me along the way. I
would also like to say “Thank
you” to you, the members of
Ogston, for giving me the
opportunity to be your
Commodore which is, I feel, a
great honour.
I am delighted to have Andy
Gomm on board as Vice
Commodore and I know that he
will ensure the continuance of
great quality racing which we all
enjoy. Please give Andy your
support by signing up for your
2014 duties as soon as possible
via Dutyman.
The Dinner Dance and
Presentation evening was once
again, a huge success with terrific
entertainment from the band
‘Saxy’. Well done again Andrea.
It was a pleasure to have Harry
Fisher there as a founder member
and former President of the club.
Harry Pye gave a very poignant
speech about the club,
highlighting the importance of
fellowship and goodwill which
makes Ogston so special,
followed by the all important
distribution of prizes by Howard
Blunt and Sam Knighton, and
many members went home
carrying some silverware. Thank
you Howard for a superb job once
again. The prize table looked
spectacular!
The recent storm caused several
boats in the dinghy park to break
free from their ties and some
boats were damaged. I would
remind members that all boats at
Ogston must be insured (in
accordance with our club rules)
so that any damage caused by
their vessels in these
circumstances is covered. All
boats in the boat park must also
be notified to the membership
secretary and the appropriate
berth fees paid.
where a buffet lunch will be
served for all. It’s a great way to
work off some of that over
indulgence from Christmas Day.
A work party took place at the
club on Sunday 15th December
the awning was taken down and
cleaned and large quantities of
leaves and debris were cleared.
Thanks to all who attended at
short notice and worked so hard.
All that remains is for myself,
Jon, Sophie & Will to wish you
all a very Happy Christmas!
There will be further work
parties in the New Year so
please try to attend if you can.
There are no paid staff at
Ogston, we are all volunteers
and all members are supposed to
attend work parties, according to
the club rules. (We do supply
Bacon Butties and hot drinks!)
On the 26th December I will be
OOD for the ‘Boxing Day Bash’
this consists of one General
Handicap race starting at 12.00
noon with prizes for the best
dressed sailors and best dressed
boat in addition to the race
winner. I look forward to seeing
lots of boats on the water for this
‘Premier’ Club Event and also
the ‘apres sail’ in the clubhouse
All members are also invited to
join in with a ‘faith lunch’ on
New Years Day from 12 noon
onwards with everyone bringing
a contribution for the table. It’s
all hands on deck with the
setting up and clearing away on
this day which is a lovely way to
welcome in the New Year

Vice Commodore’s Notes
Firstly I’d like to thank you all
for voting me in as Vice
Commodore. We have a superb
group of dedicated members at
the club who give a lot of time
and effort to keeping the club
running smoothly and it will be
a great pleasure to be working
with them.
I am writing this on Sunday
evening after another enjoyable
days sailing and I would
encourage everyone to keep
sailing. Even in winter it is still
great fun and there’s always a
very friendly welcome in the bar
afterwards. With good wet suit
and spray top it never feels too
cold – or at least that’s what I
keep telling myself! Apparently
it’s even warmer with a dry suit.
everyone make an effort to go
down to the club and check out
your boats.
Duties – the sailing calendar for
next year has been published on
Dutyman and it’s time to sign
up. We all have to do 3 duties in
the year and we rely on everyone
volunteering for their share.
Please log in to Dutyman and
sign up for your duties as soon
as possible. This will mean that
you can select the dates you
want rather than waiting until
dates have to be allocated to
you. Dutyman can be accessed
through the club website. If
anyone has any questions
regarding duties or the
Dutyman system, you can
contact me via email [email protected].
uk
or by phone – 07836 758758.
Finally I hope you have all
had an enjoyable Christmas
and I wish you a happy and
successful new year. I look
forward to seeing you at the
club soon.
Andy Gomm
Vice Commodore
Sadly however, the sailing is
nearly over for the year and by
the time you get this newsletter,
I expect we will be into the
winter shutdown. The sailing
starts again on the 16th February
and I am looking forward to
good turnouts next year. The
winter break is when we get the
essential maintenance done
around the club so please look
out for the notices and help with
the work parties when they are
organised.
We have had some problems in
the boat park caused by the
recent wind and gales. A
number of boats were blown
over in some cases landing on
other boats and causing damage.
If your boat is kept in the boat
park is it essential that it is
securely tied down. Simply
leaving the boat tied to its
trolley or trailer or in some cases
not tied at all is not sufficient. If
a boat blows over it is likely
damage to itself and other boats
and this is unfair to the other
club members. Please can
TO DO YOUR DUTIES!
Please therefore log in to Dutyman which can be accessed
through the website and sign on to cover your 3 duties as
soon as possible. If you have any questions regarding duties
you can contact me via email:
[email protected] or by telephone: 07836
758758.

Membership renewal 2014
Renewal form 2014-15
Wondering why there’s no renewal form with this newsletter?? It’s because we’ve had several problems
with the CO-OP bank over the year and therefore it’s been decided to change banks. Unfortunately it’s
not been possible to do this in time for this newsletter so I’ve not been able to include the renewal form
as I normally would.
It will be included with the January newsletter, which will give me a very short turnaround time for
getting standing orders sent off to our new bank in time for the 1 st February. To help me PLEASE can
you complete it and return it ASAP as soon as you get the newsletter and if you use on-line banking to
update your standing order making sure you change the Bank details to those of our new bank.
Have a great Christmas

Safety Matters
There are two booking in sheets on the safety notice board in the club hallway. One is for
the Powerboat level 2 for people who are taking the dinghy instructor course. The other is for any
other members wishing to take the powerboat level 2. Only those who have taken a safety
Familiarisation course can take a level 2 and with the lack of courses last year I would encourage
everyone who has missed out to sign up without delay, as places are limited.
All new members are requested to attend a Safety Familiarisation course so if you are a new
member and have not taken a safety familiarisation course please email me at
[email protected] and I will be in touch with you regarding when a course is available for
you to attend.
In January we will be taking the club radios in for a service so anybody wishing to free sail in
January please take a mobile out with you and leave your number on the bar.
With Moby already off the water the safety boat for free sailing is the dory with the Tohatsu engine
on and not the ribs please.

If you were in the first three of any of the series this year, then you will have won an engraved glass.
Come and collect it at the club on Boxing Day, you know it makes sense.
Merry Christmas everyone.
