After months of back-breaking practices and intense competitions,
the courageous Animo spirit of Benildeans prevailed once again as
DLS-CSB is declared this year’s NCAA’s overall champion.
Its mission accomplished by its
gutsy athletes, DLS-CSB formally
accepted the four-foot trophy
symbolizing general supremacy in the
83rd season of the National Collegiate
Athletic Association (NCAA) last
February 29.
It’s the second time since joining
the country’s oldest collegiate league
that DLS-CSB captured the overall
crown. The school first reigned
supreme during the NCAA’s 81st

season, in 2005-2006.
The victory is extra sweet for the
athletes who had to grapple with a
controversy that rocked the College’s
basketball team. Like a wounded
warrior however, the Blazers proved
that adversity could only serve as a
challenge in their quest for redemption.
After the battle smoke cleared,
the school garnered an impressive
total of 391 points – more than enough
to catapult it to the top of the heap and
wrestle the crown from last season’s
champ, the Philippine Christian
University (PCU).
So dominating was the
performance of the Benildean
sportsmen that every team, except for
one, booked a place in the medal
standings (see Honor Roll on page 8).
Thanks to a holistic sports program in
place, DLS-CSB may look forward to a
long and glorious reign at the top.

ushering in what could be a long
reign in the sport.

Even before the DLS-CSB tennis team set
foot at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Court to play
for the event finals against defending champs
San Sebastian College (SSC), the NCAA
overall title was all but assured for DLS-CSB.
But the squad — composed of Martin
Enrie Ramos, Reymond J. Padigos, Mark
Daniel Bautista, and Gian Paolo Aguila –
played with unparalleled gusto. Although the
SSC contingent was able to steal a game
which denied DLS-CSB outright claim to the
title, the Benildeans didn’t waste any time
demolishing the rival in a rubber match.

championship). For the deciding game, he
delivered the killer blows and put away the pesky
challenge of SSC’s number two player.
The feat, an improvement of last year’s
first runner-up finish, allowed the team to clinch
two individual honors – the MVP trophy for
Bautista and the Coach of the Year title for
Timothy “Ace” Alcos.
Alcos, who also used to coach the tennis
team of La Salle Green Hills, said he’s bent on
reinforcing the team’s powerhouse composition
next year with the possible recruitment of lefthanded power player, Roman Floresa.
Indeed, things are looking up for the
school’s tennis squad.
It is a sport that is fast gaining acceptance
locally and overseas, and it was only recently that
beach volleyball was included in the calendar of
events of the National Collegiate Association of the
Philippines (NCAA).
The novelty of the sport can help explain the
lack of “natural” players — athletes who have played
the game for a long time. Due to this, universities
had to contend with recruiting athletes who are
indoor (or traditional) volleyball players.
The case of Von Edriele C. Mabazza, DLSCSB’s top striker recently named MVP at the NCAA
beach volleyball, is an interesting one. A senior
student, Mabazza was previously an indoor
volleyball player who shifted to beach volleyball
during his last playing eligibility. This means he only
played a year as beach volleyball player yet he was
able to give the school its first championship and at
the same time, winning the MVP plum.

The DLS-CSB women
table tennis team’s
achievements in the NCAA
speak for themselves —
three-time champion led
by a three-time MVP. No
glory can ever top that,
at least, not in the
league’s recent history.
Like a rampaging bull scuttling
every obstacle thrown its way, the
women’s table tennis team of De La
Salle-College of Saint Benilde has
reigned like a righteous ruler in the
NCAA for the last three years.
If the league were a country, the
ruler would be Cescille Niemo, DLSCSB’s top netter who has been named
MVP three times in a row — the same
number of years that the school has
reigned atop the standings.
Apart from Niemo, members of the
powerhouse squad include Ayra
Malayabadas, Jeryl Moreno, Arlene Ng,
and Judee Anne Obcena. Their mentors
include head coach Rudolph Palermo
and assistant coach Susan Tayag.

The team repelled their
counterparts from Letran in the NCAA
finals. Palermo said that even if
suspended Philippine Christian
University was around to compete, it
would not have mattered because of
DLS-CSB’s overwhelming performance.
As if dominating the NCAA for the
last three years isn’t enough, the team
has also been lording it over in the
UniGames (University Games) for the past
four years.
Palermo who once played and
coached for the national team, said the
team is not resting on its laurels and is in
fact training harder for next year’s
competitions. “We’re also recruiting for the
various sporting events,” he said.

TWOSOME
Of course, Mabazza wasn’t alone in reaping
glory for the school. He had with him Eddie R.
Macdon, a third-year student who was described as
a terrific blocker by coach Parley Tupaz.
According to Tupaz, himself a veteran volleyball
player and a former member of the National Team,
the deft shot-blocking of Macdon partnered perfectly
with the skillful floor defense of Mabazza.
“Even if we have been into volleyball for the
longest time, beach volleyball is altogether foreign to
us. You are exposed to the sun and rain and the
surface, sand, is totally different. But I’m glad we
made it,” Tupaz said.

The fact that badminton was the only
event where De La Salle-College of Saint
Benilde emerged as champion in the
Women’s National Collegiate Athletic
Association (WNCAA) speaks well of the
team’s tenacity and will to win.
That description can apply very well to
team leader, Joyce Po, who was also
adjudged as the event’s Most Valuable
Player after crushing a tough SSC (St.
Scholastica’s College) squad in the finals.
In the run-up for the title, Po was ably
supported by Kimberly Roque, Patricia
Villanueva, Jemeline Paman, Nicole
Oclarino, Margarette Andrade and Charisse
Bantiling, all outstanding athletes in their
own right.

This year’s first-place finish was an
improvement from last year’s when the
school ended runner-up to dethroned
champion, RTU (Rizal Technological
University).
Coach Lloyd Escoses narrated that
the DLS-CSB team blanked Miriam
College, 2-0 during the semi-finals and
repeated the feat against the favored SSC
contingent in the championship match.
The 27-year-old Escoses, a former
member of the national team, said hard
work and patience brought the team to
the top. “A team may lose even if it
practices hard; what more if you don’t
practice. There’s no real substitute for it.”

The NBN-ZTE controversy is the hottest issue being talked
about right now – in the papers, in TV shows, and in the

students to voice out their opinions on this contentious issue.

What’s your stand on the NBN-ZTE deal?
I think what Jun Lozada had
said is true because he has
stood by it. If not for the lack of
time, I would have joined the
protest activities. It’s no longer
the Lasallian community who’s
involved here but the other
