meet new people and say hello to those you already know. Watch for the lyer, which will come home with your children.
• September 20th is also 3rd Friday, an important day for all kids to attend school as it affects the funding for MGIS.
• Our September PTA meeting will be on Tuesday, September 24th at 6:30 p.m. Meetings usually run about an
hour or less. They are very informative and a great way to get involved or just ind out what’s happening. Unfortunately,
at this point in time, childcare will NOT be provided.
• Coffee with the Principal will be on Tuesday, Oct. 1st in the morning at 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. Take this
opportunity to meet Dr. Brugger and learn more about MGIS.
• There is NO SCHOOL on Friday, October 11th or Friday, October 18th.
• The October PTA meeting will be on Wednesday, October 23rd at 6:30 p.m. As with the
September PTA meeting, childcare will NOT be provided.
More information will be sent home regarding all these events.
New for this year, as passed by the PTA membership at the end of the 2012/2013 school year, the Bug will now be
distributed every other month. If for any reason you are not satisied with this new distribution plan I would encourage
you to become a PTA member and voice your concern at any of our planned meetings. As a reminder the PTA meetings
are open to everyone, however, only PTA members may vote on issues.
I would personally like to thank all the people who have volunteered to help the PTA in the past and those who have
volunteered for this coming year. It takes many people to make everything run smoothly, and we are always looking for
more help. Please call the chairperson of any committee with questions, or join them at www.mgispta.proboards.com
I would like to ask each parent, grandparent, aunt, and uncle to think about donating their time to MGIS this year.
There is a new 3 for me challenge we are trying this year. Please be sure to follow-up on what it is all about. What a
difference even an hour can make to our children and MGIS now imagine those same results times three! There is
much work to be done behind the scenes, and we’ll take all the help we can ind! Thank you very much and have a
fantastic school year!

Can you sing Happy Birthday in German? Well, you
don’t have to be able to sing to help with Birthday
Club. Every month we celebrate students’ birthdays with a ‘party’ during lunch. Each student
receives a brownie and a pencil from the
PTA. The students really look forward to their turn
at the table. Birthday Club is held once a month on
the Third Wednesday of the month. Our irst two
celebrations will be Sept. 18 and Oct. 16. If you
would like to help co-host, especially if it is your
child’s birthday month, let me know. Send us an email
or sign up at Open House.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 20
Attention 4K, 5K & New 1st
Grade Families:
Grill Fest is Coming!
To kick off the year, PTA sponsors an
annual event called Grill Fest. This is
a casual pot-luck style picnic that is
held on the MGIS’s playground. There
will be a “New MGIS Families” area at
Grill Fest. This will provide a common
area for new families to gather and
meet one another. So, if your family is new to MGIS,
grab your blanket or camping chair on Friday, Sept.
20 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and look for the New
Families table near the grass. It will be a nice opportunity to meet the other families in your child’s class and
for the kids to run around together. A PTA member
will be available to answer questions about the school
you may have. More information about grill fest will
soon be coming home with your child. Looking forward to seeing you there!
GRILL
FEST
We need volunteers to make this a success.
If you are able to help man the grills or help with
set-up and take down, please contact Geno Kloiber
at [email protected]
FRIDAY, SEPT. 20

books over and over? Stop by and pick up some
new German books, DVD’s and get them prepared
for their new year of learning. Look for our table at
Grill Fest!
We are looking for volunteers to help at Grill Fest
and a few other sales throughout the year. Your

GETTING TO KNOW YOU
Frau Huhta
Hello everyone,
I am Frau Carola Huhta. I am a Paraprofessional here at German Immersion School.
I assist teachers in the classrooms with all kind of things. Helping in K4 in the mornings , lunch duty, recess duty, reading with the older students in German, helping at
dismissing or digging through garbage for missing retainers….that would be me! I
love ALL of it!
Frau Huhta with her husband
I am from Braunschweig, Germany. Yes, that is why my name is spelled with the
“a ‘at the end.
5 things you didn’t know
about Frau Huhta
1 I love animals. We have 5 cats, all boys!
I came to the USA over 19 years ago. I am married and have a 17 year old son.
He went to MGIS and is now in 12 th grade at Milwaukee School of Languages.
2 I love to work in my garden
3 I enjoy having friends and family over to play cards
4 I grew up as a foster child
I have a bachelor degree in Child Psychology and hope to become a teacher at
the school one day. I do know that it is still a long way, but I love my job with the
children - and the school that gives me a little feeling of “home.” I enjoy the MGIS
events and try to be part of all of them.
Before I worked at the school, I was working in a daycare for 8 years.
I mostly worked with 2 and 4 year olds. I still work at a daycare in the afternoon
part-time, unless I tutor adults and children in German.
5 I am a machinist by trade
PTA FAMILY OF THE MONTH
The Schmid Family
Occupation: Matt is a breadmaker at Great Harvest Bakery and Elizabeth is a
Kindergarten teacher at Roosevelt Elementary in Wauwatosa
Where you have seen us around MGIS: Henry (8) is in 3rd grade and Theo (6) is
in 1st grade. Matt volunteers weekly in the lunchroom/playground and in classroom during
reading instruction. He also is a volunteer coach for soccer at MGIS. Elizabeth volunteers
with the PTA and helps at Grill Fest & Weinachtsmarkt.
Hobbies/Activities: As well as being a classical guitarist, Matt enjoys watching and playing soccer, volunteering and being a dad. Elizabeth is a Reiki practitioner and enjoys yoga,
reading, live music and family time. We also play sheepshead every month.
Henry & Theo enjoy playing soccer, memorizing maps of the world, collecting Pokemon
cards, building Legos, drawing, and making and completing obstacle courses.
Family Members:
Matt (dad), Elizabeth (mom), Henry 3rd
grade and Theo 1st grade.
Future Plans: Ultimately, we dream of taking a trip to Germany to see the boys’ greatgrand parents hometown in Bavaria. Until then, we would like to get to know the cities and
sites bordering Lake Michigan and take the circle tour at a leisurely pace.
Thoughts about MGIS:The opportunity for Henry and Theo to become luent in another language is what brought us to MGIS. But It’s the kindness and dedication of the teachers
and amazing community of families that continue to make us thrilled with our decision to
send our children to MGIS. We think MGIS is a very unique and special place.

SAFETY ALERT
Dismissal Procedure
Morning Trafic
For an orderly, prompt, and safe dismissal of all
students, student pick-up trafic is to stay in the
front hallway to the right of the yellow safety
stands. Please leave the other half of the hallway
clear for teachers with their students. Classes are
still in session in the lunch room for music until
3:20 p.m. We ask that parents picking up
children arrive after the last classes have
been dismissed from the instruction area.
All people leaving the cafeteria must proceed in the
direction of the front doors. Students and parents
will not be allowed to go ‘against trafic’ through
the hallways.
Parents, if you are bringing your child/ren to school,
please have them on the playground shortly before
8:45 a.m. so that they may line up with their classmates as the bell rings. There is supervision
on the playground beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Please do not drop children off earlier
than this.
Help us ensure that all students are on their way
home quickly and safely at the end of the day.
Your cooperation at this high trafic time is greatly
needed and appreciated.
MMWG
Mon. Morning Work Group
Join us on Monday, Sept. 16 for breakfast and
learn about MMWG – a casual get together of parents that meet every Monday and lend a hand to
our teachers. We do chores such as cutting, tracing,
collating and stapling while we socialize. We start
about 8:50 a.m. and work until the work is done,
usually just a few hours. Teachers really need our help
right now to get the year off to a good start. Grandparents and dads are always welcome. We
meet in the lower level of school with many supplies
we use for our projects. If you’re interested in helping
out on Monday mornings, we always have room for
more! We also work on Tuesday mornings if there is
no school on Monday. Any questions? Please contact:
Lorraine Heins at (414)801-5771 (call or text) or
email [email protected]
We ask that parents who drive children to school,
park on the south side of the building, either in the
lot at the southwest corner of the playground or on
the north side of Nash Street, adjacent to the southern end of the playground.
If you choose to use the parking lot to drop off your
children, please pull in to a parking space if you need
to help your children get out of the car. Or if your
children will be exiting the car quickly in the parking
lot, you may pull up to the fence opening onto to the
playground. This will help keep trafic moving in the
parking lot.
On the north side of Nash Street, children can get
out of vehicles curb side, and proceed safely and
directly to the playground. Parking on the north side
of Nash Street will keep you and your child/ren from
having to cross the busy streets during this high
trafic time.
Remember, the north parking lot on Vienna St., is for
TEACHERS ONLY. If you do end up parking north
of the school, rather than coming through the building, please use the sidewalk along 82nd Street or the
paved path along the east end of the building (up the
stairs and past the baseball ield) to walk to the playground so that your child/ren may line up with their
class in the morning before the bell rings.
At all times, both sides of 82nd Street and the south
side of Vienna are reserved for school buses only.
ATTENTION
Students, Parents, and Visitors: for the safety
of our students and staff, please use only the
front doors to enter and exit the school
building at all times!
Also, please remember to stay off of neighbor’s lawns
and out of driveways.
Thank you for your attention and
cooperation in this safety matter.

MORNING DROP OFF
Cars are behind you
This is an e-mail to our ofice from a parent
regarding the morning drop:
The problem I, along with other parents are having is
morning drop off. The “turn around” in the
parking lot should be meant for a very quick
drop off only. There is an increasing number of
parents who will stop, get out of their car, unload their
kids, and sometimes sit there until their child goes into
school. This produces a SIGNIFICANT bottle neck, and the
rest of us (many times 5-6 cars deep) are at the mercy of
the parent doing this. PLEASE inform parents that if they
choose to get out of their car and assist their child to park
their cars. There is usually plenty of parking available.
Family Engagement in Education Act Introduced
On July 11, 2013 the Family Engagement in Education Act of 2013 (S. 1291/H.R. 2662) was introduced by
U.S. Senators Jack Reed (RI), Christopher Coons (DE), Sheldon Whitehouse (RI), and Representatives Glenn
Thompson (PA) and Carolyn McCarthy (NY).
As PTA leaders and inluencers know well, research demonstrates that family engagement in a child’s education increases student achievement, improves attendance, and reduces dropout rates. The Family Engagement
in Education Act of 2013 provides school districts the lexibility to identify programming that works best for
individual communities and resources to build effective family engagement strategies.View a summary of this
important legislation. Encourage your Senators and U.S. Representative to cosponsor atwww.pta.org/takeaction
– provided to us by the Milwaukee Council PTA
Be a part of the PTA!
Help is needed in these areas:
• parent volunteer
• fundraising
• student & community enrichment
• and more
Help us reach our goal of 200 PTA
members for the 2013-14 school year!
Let your voice be heard. Fill out the form in the back
of this newsletter and attend the next PTA meeting
on September 18.
TARDIES
Running Late?
It’s really important to make sure children are on time for
school. The teachers explain important things about the
day that shouldn’t be missed. Please call (393-5600) the
school ofice if your child is tardy. Tardies are relected on
report cards. Any time after 8:45a.m. is considered tardy.

STAFF PARKING LOT
The north parking lot (located on Vienna) is a staff lot.
Please to do not park in the engineer’s spot nor
double park, as staff members need to be able to exit
at the end of the day. It is also for the safety of those
using the parking lot. Also, there is NO parking on the
south side of Vienna between 7am - 4:30p.m. This is a
loading area for busses and daycare vans. THANKS!
RESPECT OUR NEIGHBORS
THURSDAY • SEPT. 12 • 6 – 7:30PM
Open House
Let’s be Good Neighbors
In the past, a neighbor put up a “No Trespassing” sign
in a yard across from MGIS. I don’t know if it had
something to do with our school or not, but it is a
good reminder to be considerate of our neighbor’s
property.
Throughout the day please remember to:
• Please tell your children to stay on the sidewalks
and not run through people’s yards,
• Don’t throw garbage on the ground or be disrespect
ful in other ways.
• Please don’t park in or block neighborhood driveways.
• Please take the time to park in our southwest
parking lot or on the street.
• No parking in the crosswalks
• No stopping in the middle of the street to pick up
or drop off kids
• No parking on 82nd street. There is no parking on
both sides of the street.
• For your Safety, no Jay-Walking... always go to the
corners of the block
We would like to be a good neighbor in the
community and with your help we can do this.

Lost and Found
The Lost and found is located outside the school ofice. We
collect many items and always hope that they ind their way
back to the proper owners!! When Items are found with a
name in them, they can be easily returned!
It would be helpful to label all coats, hats, boots, lunch boxes,
etc. with your child’s name. A label on the inside of these
items will increase the likelihood of reuniting your child with
any lost/missing belongings brought to school!!

contact other health care facilities regarding health
concerns, and more.
Please remember to bring in any forms for medical
documentation. Also, LABEL ALL MEDICINE
WITH YOUR CHILDS NAME. We cannot
give your children medicine without a signed consent from the doctor (when it’s a doctor-prescribed
