Mission
TEVERETERNO is a multidisciplinary cultural project dedicated to the establishment and ongoing stewardship of
the first and largest public space for site-specific contemporary art on Rome’s urban riverfront.
Project
The Tiber was the birthplace of Rome, and the backbone of civic life until the nineteenth century, when the
embankment walls separated it from its urban surroundings. TEVERETERNO works to restore the historical bond
between river and city through onsite programming at Piazza Tevere, a river-piazza between Ponte Sisto and Ponte
Mazzini. Here, since 2005, TEVERETERNO has produced cultural events drawing tens of thousands of people to the
river, celebrating the site and its context through vibrant contemporary art.
Vision
TEVERETERNO was conceived by artist Kristin Jones, who believes in art as a catalyst for urban transformation.
We envision the Tiber as a river park in the heart of Rome, and Piazza Tevere as one of its most vibrant public spaces.
Through regular public programming and a commitment to long-term maintenance, the riverfront will become,
once again, a destination for Romans and tourists alike.
Piazza Tevere will be, for Rome, a unique episode amongst exemplary international projects such as the High
Line in New York, Rio Manzanares in Madrid, the Cheonggyecheon River in Seoul, and the Turbine Hall in London,
reinforcing Rome’s link in the global network of like-minded urban planning and cultural initiatives.
Organization
TEVERETERNO Onlus is an Italian non-profit organization, founded in 2004 by Kristin Jones, Rosario Pavia, Carlo
Gasparrini and Luca Zevi. Based in Rome, it is a growing international initiative involving a committed team of artists,
architects and planners working in synergy with the city’s urban planning objectives to produce cultural events. In
2011 TEVERETERNO was recognized within UNESCO’s Management Plan for the city of Rome as an exemplary pilotproject and acknowledged as critical to the dynamic renewal of Rome’s river.

Urban Objectives
Most cities were founded on the banks of a river for reasons of commerce, transportation and agriculture. Many
of today’s most-loved international cities celebrate this heritage with architecture, cultural events, and marketing
that focus on their river: New York and the Hudson, Paris and the Seine, London and the Thames, Madrid and the
Manzanares – all inspire for the vital role of rivers in their urban identity. Many others, especially in the United States,
are working hard to restore their river fronts (Chicago, New Orleans, Washington, Boston, Providence, Los Angeles).
Rome has a unique place among these river-revival ventures, working to bring the Tiber back into the consciousness
of its citizens and transforms it into a resource and a destination. The City of Rome has been active in the river’s
restoration, and some gains have been made in protecting the river’s ecological health and in permitting cultural,
recreational events, and commercial initiatives, which attract an ever-increasing number of visitors to the urban
waterfront.
Piazza Tevere
In 2005, TEVERETERNO inaugurated a public commons, the Piazza Tevere, on an underutilized, central section of
the Tiber River in historic Rome between Ponte Sisto and Ponte Mazzini.
The site is proposed to city, province, and regional agencies as a unique venue for contemporary arts programming
to be experienced in the context of classical Rome, where free, public events can stimulate a dialogue between
nature and the urban construct, between history and present.
TEVERETERNO is actively working to secure funding to underwrite minimum interventions on Piazza Tevere,
necessary to facilitate public access, the staging of cultural events, and flexible usage.

Long Term Goals for the Piazza Tevere
TEVERETERNO’s long term goals include:

Agreement with the Regione Lazio and the City of Rome for annual, onsite, free cultural programming
Design and installation of permanent infrastructure (seating, lighting, utilities, etc.)
Ongoing maintenance plan and security
Partnership with local institutions (e.g., Maxxi, MACRO, foreign academies, CEMAT)
Infrastructural Enhancement
With a proven track record of producing successful events on the Tiber River, TEVERETERNO seeks to promote
public use of the Piazza Tevere and to prepare it for a wide array of public programming. The combination of
permanent and temporary elements, as laid out in the City of Rome’s new Master Plan, will improve access, provide
options for flexible usage, and reveal new views of the river. Key to the infrastructural enhancement:

TEVERETERNO seeks sponsors to earmark funds towards these vital elements, providing the opportunity for
interested donors to create a permanent and highly visible mark upon the City of Rome.
Programming Initiatives
• Annual schedule of multidisciplinary cultural events featuring: visual art, film, performing arts, architecture,
contemporary music, and environmental programming
• Twinning with other river cities and the creation of an international network that combines cultural and
environmental organizations with similar river revitalization projects
• Free Wi-Fi zone to connect Piazza Tevere to the city of Rome and to the rest of the world virtually, and to
promote its public use
Models and Precedents
TEVERETERNO invites the exchange of ideas, the collaboration of peers, and the coproduction of artistic and
educational events to raise awareness and encourage responsible, dynamic planning of public space in Rome and in
river sites around the world. Among others, TEVERETERNO looks at the following international examples:

2012 Waterfire roma
Barnaby Evans (dance by Linda Foster, chairs by Robert Hammond )
Thirty brilliant bonfires burned from sunset to midnight, just above the waters of the
Tiber. Choreographer Linda Foster’s Moveable Space was performed, with a reiteration
of Robert Hammond’s Chance Encounter. The flickering firelight on Piazza Tevere’s
arched bridges, the torch-lit vessels traveling down the river, and the resonant sound of
music echoing through the site brought the Tiber to life in this, the European premiere
of internationally acclaimed WaterFire.

2010 La Biennale di Venezia
architettura
TEVERETERNO brought the story of Rome’s Tiber River to Venice, the ‘City of Water,’ in
AILATI. Reflections from the Future, the Italian Pavilion of La Biennale di Venezia‘s 12th
International Architecture Exhibition, with a site-specific exhibition, a full program of
cultural events, a major presentation as part of the Biennale’s conference program, and the
world premiere of two short films by acclaimed filmmaker Renato Chiocca, dramatizing the
beauty and promise of Rome’s Tiber River.
2010 Chance Encounter
Robert Hammond and Lisa Bielawa
Urban place-maker Robert Hammond and composer Lisa Bielawa turned the Tiber
walkway into a vibrant, social space in this new collaborative work with moveable seating
and immersive musical experience. Performed by American soprano Susan Narucki, the
Brooklyn Rider String Quartet (New York), and the Blue Chamber Orchestra (Rome),
Chance Encounter was a flexible installation composed expressly to awaken Rome’s
outdoor public space.
Produced in partnership with MAXXI, Rome’s National Museum of XXI Century Arts.
2009 Trilogy: She-Wolf as Shape of Time
Kristin Jones with Walter Branchi, Daniel K. Brown, Eugenio Giordani,
David Monacchi
Trilogy brought the mythic Roman She-Wolf to life in this three-part series drawing
from nearly 3000 years of visual history. Beginning with an exhibition of prints at Rome’s
Capitoline Museum, opening with an evening of projections and sound, the program was
accompanied by a large-scale installation on the Tiber River, exploring the origins of the
Eternal City and its icon, the She-Wolf.
Produced in partnership with the Musei Capitolini with support from the City of Rome.
2008 She-Wolves: from tiber to hudson
Walter Branchi, Alvin Curran, Kiki Smith, Kristin Jones, David Monacchi, Nico
Muhly, Roberto Laneri, and more
This special three-day program in New York featured compositions and animations
created for the Tiber River in Rome, transposed for their downtown Manhattan sites,
as well as new works for the Hudson River. In its United States premiere, She Wolves was
conceived as a series of site-specific works whose fusion of river, sound, and light would
draw the public to the water’s edge.

2007 Flussi Correnti
Kristin Jones, Daniel K. Brown, Ars Ludi, Steve Reich, Ear to the Earth
Initiated by the sunset lighting of 2000 candles, this tribute to the Tiber featured the world
premiere of Nicola Sani’s Wassererinnerungeren and a concert of environmental sound,
curated by Joel Chadabe (Ear to the Earth). Daniel K. Brown and Kristin Jones presented
Luminalia, a serpentine line of 1000 candles floating on the river’s surface, drawing its
current in flame. Roman ensemble Ars Ludi performed live music by David Monacchi,
Corrado Fantoni, and Steve Reich.
2007 Jenny Holzer - For the Academy
Jenny Holzer
For the Academy was a nighttime series of site-specific works throughout the city of
Rome by world-renowned artist Jenny Holzer. Synchronized, scrolling projections of
texts by international poets and writers were cast along the entire length of the Piazza
Tevere’s right bank in this original, site-specific work, exploring love and hate, peace
and war.
Produced in partnership with the American Academy in Rome; sponsored by FLOS lighting.
2006 Ombre dal Lupercale
This all-night program transformed the Piazza Tevere with ambient sound and projected
animations along the Tiber’s embankment wall. As the sun set, the flames of 1,400 candles
lit the water’s edge. A harmonic choir initiated the program, culminating with a dramatic
sequence to welcome the dawn.

At TEVERETERNO’s inaugural event, 2,758 torches – representing the number of years
since Rome’s foundation – lined the banks of the Tiber River. A frieze of twelve grand SheWolf silhouettes by artist Kristin Jones were unveiled on river’s high travertine walls; and
an international, harmonic choir of one hundred voices performed throughout the night,
conducted by composer Roberto Laneri.

Il geniale artista vuole regalare un’opera a
Roma. Ma non la vedremo mai. Troppo
spesso l’arte contemporanea viene espulsa
dalle città. Per burocrazia o per ignoranza

pubbliche rispetto all’arte contemporanea.
Il risultato si è visto nei giorni scorsi: bloccata dalla soprintendenza un’opera di uno
degli artisti più famosi del mondo, il sudafricano William Kentridge, proprio nei
giorni in cui un artista romano in cerca di
gloria, Francesco Visalli, montava abusivamente una sua scultura al Circo Massimo.
Qualcosa deve essere accaduto in questi
quarant’anni: la burocrazia è diventata più
farraginosa? O forse è cambiata la pratica
della tutela? La realtà è che le città italiane,
soprattutto quelle con un’alta densità di
stratificazioni storiche, vivono da separate
in casa con le opere contemporanee. E le
sopportano a malapena.
Non è un problema solo nostro: in America gli anni Ottanta sono stati testimoni di
un celebre processo che ha visto come imputato Richard Serra. La sua scultura monumentale “Tilted Arc”, commissionata
dalla General Services Administration degli
Stati Uniti, venne installata nella Foley Federal Plaza di New York nel 1981. Ma gli
impiegati degli uffici del quartiere cominciarono a firmare petizioni contro quel
«pezzo di muro arrugginito», fino ad arri-

Art ha avuto fortuna: il suo ”Ago e filo”che
campeggia in piazza Cadorna a Milano fin
dal 2000, omaggio all’industriosità lombarda e al suo ruolo di leader nella moda,
è un punto di snodo della città ormai imprescindibile. Eppure la stessa Milano ha
un rapporto di amore/odio con l’arte
contemporanea: basti ricordare la bagarre
causata nel 2004 dai manichini di tre
bambini impiccati a un albero di piazza
XXIV Maggio. C’era Maurizio Cattelan
dietro quella provocazione, ma i fantocci
vennero buttati giù da un passante indignato che finì all’ospedale cadendo dall’albero malamente.
A Roma, invece, sta diventando un caso
l’ostracismo che ha colpito Kentridge. Una
star della scena artistica che poco più di un
anno fa ha avuto con la capitale un colpo
di fulmine corrisposto, dallo spettacolo
“Refuse the hour” al Teatro Argentina a
una mostra al Maxxi. La sua idea? Far
apparire lungo cinquecento metri dei muraglioni ai bordi del Tevere (il tratto che va

“Triumph and Laments”, un riassunto in
sequenza della storia di Roma. Invitato a
fare un dono alla città dall’associazione
Tevereterno, fondata nel 2004 dall’artista
americana Kristin Jones, Kentridge vorrebbe realizzare con un metodo non invasivo
quel “wall drawing” sul fiume, in una zona
di alto degrado e poco vissuta dai cittadini.
Niente ricorso a spray, soltanto getti di
vapore acqueo che cancellano lo smog, una
pittura fatta con idropulitrici e stencil. Si
applicano le figure ritagliate e si spruzza sui
bordi l’acqua che sgrassa i contorni rendendoli candidi; una volta staccati gli stencil,
sotto appaiono i personaggi scuri, sporchi,
impregnati dello smog originario. «L’opera
sarebbe reversibile, sparirebbe nel giro di
due anni», spiega l’architetto Valeria Sassanelli di Tevereterno. Oltretutto, alle spese
contribuiscono vari sponsor e le gallerie che
rappresentano l’artista in Italia e all’estero,
quindi zero costi pubblici. Una visione
ecologica e dunque sostenibile quella di
Kentridge? Sì per l’Ardis e le Autorità di
Bacino, no per la soprintendenza che ha
bloccato il progetto.
La Direzione regionale per i beni architettonici e paesaggistici è chiusa a riccio nel
suo fortino, non ci spiega a voce le motivazioni del suo rifiuto, ma fa sapere di non
aver concesso quella porzione di muro
perché vincolato. E di essere disponibile
